On his weekly mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. Among them: How should the front office manage the Oneil Cruz situation heading into next season, with major questions looming over his ability to become a true MLB star? Is GM Ben Cherington's job secure if this team is able to finish close to the .500 mark under manager Don Kelly? Was moving Bubba Chandler into the starting rotation next to Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller a wise idea? How much should Braxton Ashcraft's workload be managed moving forward? And if the Pirates can only keep one of Andrew McCutchen or Tommy Pham for 2026, which one should they choose?
PG columnist Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason admitted he is wavering on his Ben Cherington claim that he would be gone at season's end, but he does believe the Pirates will still move on from their GM. Should the Pirates re-sign Andrew McCutchen? There is a good argument to bring back Tommy Pham, who has ended up being a pretty good offseason signing. Jason still has hopes Bob Nutting will look at the whole body of work and not just how the team played in the final month. Jason shared that Cherington is under contract through ‘at least' next season. Jason thinks Cherington stays if the Pirates finish this final month strong.

Mike Tomlin stated today that it was a mutual parting of ways between the Steelers and Justin Fields. Chris thinks there is a tell in some of Tomlin's pressers in terms of how much he thinks of the opponent's ability. Was it really a mutual split between Fields and the Steelers? The Pirates rallied late in Boston to beat the Red Sox 4–2, spoiling rookie Payton Tolle's debut. Neil and DiNardo break down the marquee matchup of Paul Skenes vs. Tolle: Skenes didn't have his very best but stayed icy—6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 6 K on 95 pitches—working through some shaky defense (rough night for IKF, and a drop in CF) and a Roman Anthony homer. Andrew McCutchen carried the offense (3-for-3, BB, two doubles) with the go-ahead two-run double, while Nick Gonzales chipped in two hits. They also dive into Henry Davis' night (tough at-bats but stellar behind the plate, nabbed a runner), and a lights-out bullpen trio: Dauri Moreta's nine-pitch seventh, Isaac Mattson continuing his breakout (now down to a 1.95 ERA), and Dennis “Mr. Efficient” Santana striking out two to close (ERA down around 2.33). Plus: quick talk on waiver buzz (IKF, Tommy Pham). Like, comment, and subscribe for more Pirates postgames. Powered by Primanti Bros—let's go Bucs! Andrew McCutchen isn't holding back. In his recent sit-down at Wrigley with Jose Negron of DKPS, Cutch admitted he doesn't want to “waste a roster spot” and made it clear that the Pirates have to pay to win if they want to take advantage of their pitching window. We dive into what that means for his future in Pittsburgh, how his Milwaukee stint shaped his outlook, and whether 2026 will be his 18th big-league season. Then we shift to Tommy Pham's comments from last night, where he stressed the need for a team-wide offensive philosophy and even pointed to Jared Triolo as someone starting to buy in. Is this really an organizational approach, or just veteran leadership trying to push change from inside the clubhouse? Finally, we zoom out: Are the Pirates actually “close,” like Pham believes, or does Cutch have it right that ownership must finally spend to avoid wasting an elite pitching staff led by Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller? ⚾️ Subscribe for more Pirates talk and North Shore Nine content!
JD reacts to the Blue Jays series' loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tommy Pham's revenge game, before making the case that it should be José Berríos in the bullpen over Eric Lauer as the Jays stick with a five-man rotation (00:00). Ben Nicholson-Smith, host of At The Letters, joins JD to continue to the conversation on the starting rotation, Berríos' leash with Shane Bieber joining the squad against the Marlins this weekend, the strength of the bullpen with Lauer slated to join the group, expectations for Bieber in his first start since April 2024, and the effect that Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s injury has on the lineup (9:54). Later, JD discusses the comments by Auston Matthews on Mitch Marner heading to the Vegas Golden Knights (46:46).The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
With multiple WR trades taking place in the last 24 hours – and a third if you go back 72 hours, should the Steelers be active in the market? A new name has risen up – Alec Pierce from the Colts. Pierce could be on his way out in a pretty crowded room in Indy. If it took a 4th round pick or a 4th round pick and a middling player, would you make the deal for the guy that led the league in yards per reception last season? KDKA TV's Bob Pompeani joined the show. Bob thinks the Steelers could go into the season with the WR room as it is, but isn't ruling out Omar Khan making a move as roster cuts take place. Pomp said he wanted to see the combo of DK Metcalf and George Pickens this season, but it wasn't meant to be. Would Alec Pierce be a good fit in Pittsburgh? Bob speculated how much of the starters we would see tonight, including the potential first look at Jalen Ramsey in a Steelers uniform. Who is getting cut? Bob thinks Connor Heyward is on the bubble, but expects the team to find a spot for him. Bob talked about some of the intriguing battles that will conclude soon. Will Kaleb Johnson be on the field at the same time as the starting offensive line tonight? The guys asked Bob about preparation for the preseason games. PG columnist Jason Mackey joined the show. The guys had Jason react to the Bubba Chandler promotion and beginning his Major League career out of the bullpen. Jason described the reasoning behind letting Chandler pitch in a relief role before starting. Is there a sense that Andrew McCutchen is not a fan of Ben Cherington? Jason mentioned Cutch may not be doing himself any favors by ripping Bob Nutting a little bit. Do we think the decision has always been made on Cherington's future with about a month to go in the season? The guys asked Jason about some comments made by Tommy Pham off the cuff.

After a brief digression to discuss Tommy Pham being an idiot, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s health, our thoughts turn to the Blue Jays' rotation this week.Shane Bieber will make his debut for the club on Friday in Miami, which means that Eric Lauer's dream season has taken another twist, as he head's back to the bullpen—albeit only temporarily. What's up with that? What's going on with Berríos? What do we expect from Bieber? We guarantee we'll answer all of these questions*, and so many more! (Not a guarantee).Plus! Brent Gunning is joined once again by Sam McKee to chat about the Blue Jays, who dropped their series finale to the Pirates yesterday afternoon in Pittsburgh. With all of the scoring coming in the first inning for both sides, the guys chat about the solid performance from Chris Bassitt and the Jays bullpen. They express their disappointment that Tommy Pham drove in both runs for the Pirates, before looking ahead to Shane Bieber's anticipated Blue Jays debut Friday in Miami.
