This week on Asians in Baseball, we get deep into the feels! 2:23 - All Star Game voting update: Ohtani is a shoo-in, but Kazuma Okamoto is the only other Asian who makes it to the second round?!?! Be sure to vote until this Thursday 7/2 at 12pm ET! 13:25 - In position player news, Tommy Pham signs with the Phillies which can't end well, the Asians on the Red Sox are contributing to their upswing, and Hao Yu Lee has been hot at the plate for the Tigers and has lunch with his new bestie Kai Wei Teng. 26:04 - Ohtani keeps crushing the ball and manages to stay dominant on the mound, despite communication issues with his catcher.34:19 - Kodai Senga is sent to the bullpen where he pitches more innings in relief than as a starter, Detroit has Kai Wei Teng's number but Tatsuya Imai has back to back double digit strikeout starts, Joey Cantillo could use a little help from the offense, and Brennan Bernadino and Orion Kerkering have been lights out. 44:00 - HOT TOPIC: Is there crying in baseball? (Yes.)
Don't look now, but after winning their series against the Mets this weekend, the Phillies have cut the Braves' lead in the NL East to 3 games. John Stolnis of The Good Phight runs down the top storylines from the weekend, including the Race to 400 for Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, the divergent paths taken by the Mets and Phils since early struggles, and the legend of Derek Hill. Also, some thoughts about Tommy Pham, Andrew Painter and the putrid American League.
Texas Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford officially lands on the injured list after suffering an unexpected physical setback. Corey Pieper breaks down structural managerial firings, significant minor league promotions, the weekly Waiver Wire segment, and the FanDuel Bet of the Day. The medical and transaction wire is in complete chaos as the New York Mets fire manager Carlos Mendoza, Tony Santillan lands on the injured list with an oblique strain, and Marcelo Mayer, Robert Suarez, and Jesus Sanchez all hit the injured list. Meanwhile, Wyatt Langford hits the shelf, Tyler Soderstrom battles hip tightness, and Kai-Wei Teng is demoted, though fantasy managers receive reinforcements with Konnor Griffin returning, Hurston Waldrep being recalled, Adley Rutschman returning from the injured list, Sean Keys and Miguel Ulola earning promotions, Simeon Woods Richardson hitting waivers, Carlos Santana signing with the Braves, and Tommy Pham joining the Phillies on a minor league deal. Daily performance metrics highlight a stacked group of standouts as Hunter Goodman, Jake Bennett, David Peterson, Logan Webb, Kazuma Okamoto, Seiya Suzuki, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Luis Garcia Jr., Ryan O'Hearn, Sonny Gray, Junior Caminero, Brandon Woodruff, Esmerlyn Valdez, Chris Sale, and Kerry Carpenter deliver big games, while Michael Wacha clashes with Davis Martin and Robbie Ray battles Chris Sale. Conversely, a massive list of foundational aces completely imploded, with Dylan Cease, Logan Gilbert, Gerrit Cole, Andre Pallante, Chase Burns, Kyle Bradish, Michael King, Anthony Kay, Roki Sasaki, Jared Jones, and Spencer Arrighetti all relegated to the duds section. Our weekly Waiver Wire segment provides direct tactical targets to optimize your active roster, specifically breaking down the immediate priority additions of Heliot Ramos, Bryce Eldridge, AJ Ewing, Joey Cantillo, and Brandon Young. Marcell Ozuna was supposed to be one of the Pirates' biggest offensive additions this offseason, but through more than 200 plate appearances, the production still has not been there. On today's episode of OffBeat, Alex Stumpf looks at Ozuna's slow start, how it compares to past veteran struggles from Rowdy Tellez and Tommy Pham, and why the DH-only profile makes this situation different for the Pirates. Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn have become major pieces of the lineup, but Ozuna's bat still has not followed. Welcome to the episode where we embrace retirement age and a respect for poetry at the same time our inner 12 year olds attempt to discuss cockfighting with the seriousness it deserves. That's right, in the same hour we reference NPR and the National Baseball Poetry Festival, and Edwin Diaz and his 150 cock photos on Facebook. Not that kind. We tell you about Thor dabbling with slander, Yasiel Puig's perceived lack of remorse, and the wrong kind of banner day at Nat's Park. Pirates 2, Cubs 0 in the first of three at Wrigley Field this weekend. The Pirates got clutch pitching and a clean 9th inning from Dennis Santana. We tipped our cap to Carmen Mlodzinski, who pitched into the 6th inning after struggling in previous outings when he sees a lineup multiple times. Big credit went to the bullpen for closing the door. A deeper look into the numbers following the Pirates win at Wrigley to open the series against the Cubs. Another ugly day for Marcell Ozuna – how do his numbers early on stack up to guys like Tommy Pham and Rowdy Tellez at this point in the season? More Bucco Reaction following the win in Chicago.

Adam Howe and Kevin Hasting break down fantasy-relevant MLB veterans who will be 35 or older in 2026, discussing why age-based discounts often go too far in drafts. The internet makes it so easy to share news and create a community, especially in the world of baseball. These are some of the "crazy" things the internet is saying. Tommy Pham proposes “Phamgraphs” as a new statistic. Why Kyle Farnsworth is the most viewed pitcher in Iowa? Is soccer actually more popular than baseball in America? Pirates insider Jason Mackey from the PG joined the show. Jason is not confident the Pirates will hand out a multi-year free agent deal, which they haven't done in nearly a decade. He expects the Pirates moves to be in trade form, like a Mitch Keller deal or something else with their young pitchers. Jason said the Pirates still probably have some shame in the Tyler Glasnow trade, even though it was under the last regime. Jason doesn't expect Tommy Pham or Isaiah Kiner-Falefa will be in Pittsburgh next season. Jason wouldn't be surprised if the Pirates ‘just run it back with a lot of what they had this past year.'
What is going on with Pat Freiermuth? The Steelers paid the TE last offseason and now he is being phased out of the team's offense. He's roughly an $11M cap hit, but is on-pace to catch 0 TD this season and catch about 30 passes. Should they use Pat in a trade? Will we see him in the offense more going forward? The guys pointed out the usage of the other TEs in the offense and wondered where Pat really fits in right now. Is there a Pitt-Penn State element to why Pat Freiermuth gets more hate than other players? Does he get extra hate for not being Heath Miller? The money is another big part of it. On his weekly mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. Among them: How should the front office manage the Oneil Cruz situation heading into next season, with major questions looming over his ability to become a true MLB star? Is GM Ben Cherington's job secure if this team is able to finish close to the .500 mark under manager Don Kelly? Was moving Bubba Chandler into the starting rotation next to Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller a wise idea? How much should Braxton Ashcraft's workload be managed moving forward? And if the Pirates can only keep one of Andrew McCutchen or Tommy Pham for 2026, which one should they choose?
