Welcome to another episode of It's Lit(erature)! We are a (chaotic) book club podcast & we welcome all to our weird family! So come join us for a very casual book discussion! This week we are discussing the horror novel: The Final Girl Support Group By: Grady Hendrix This book centers on the 'final girl' trope, as well as the girls themselves, from classic horror movies. The "final girl" in stories is defined as the last girl(s) or woman alive to confront the killer, ostensibly the one left to tell the story. This book revolves around many different "final girls" and how they are currently living their life. They all attend a support group with one another, but then something happens. They are all once again targets. It even seems as if each of their personal monsters have come back to finish them off. Will our heroine, Lynette, a not so final girl be able to solve the mystery and save the only family she has left? This book draws from many famous references. There are final girls that are direct references to Scream, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and more. If you are a horror movie fan this just might be the book for you! This is the first book the two of us are almost evenly split on, so that's also really exciting for an episode! Basically: one of us likes this book and one of us hates this book..you should listen to hear all the juicy details! This week we are discussing the mystery-thriller: The Lost Girls By: Heather Young This book centers on the mysterious disappearance of young Emily Evans who vanished from her family's vacation home on a remote Minnesota lake in the summer of 1935. This event destroys her mother, who then spends the rest of her life waiting at the lake house for her favorite daughter. Her two other daughters, Lucy and Lilith, also stay at the lake house. Sixty years later, Lucy is living alone in the lake house and decides to write down her account of all that she remembered from the summer Emily disappeared. She also leaves the lake house to her family member Justine. This book is told from two different POVs. One being Lucy's POV from the past and the other being Justine's in the present day. Both are connected and they both weave this very twisted, and honestly depressing, tale. This is not an easy book to read but it is very well written. If you do decide you'd like to read it, we would suggest that you check trigger warnings first. If you would just rather listen to us you're more than welcome to! Welcome to another episode of It's Lit(erature)! We are a (chaotic) book club podcast & we welcome all to our weird family! So come join us for a very casual book discussion! This week we are discussing the teen mystery book: One of Us Is Lying By: Karen McManus 'Pay close attention and you might solve this.' From the very beginning this book is set up as a cross between The Breakfast Club & Pretty Little Liars. You can also add a little Gossip Girl in there too, let's be honest. So if that sounds like something you'd totally be into, this might be the book for you! This book is told from the POV's of our 4 main characters: Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, and Cooper. The four of them were put in detention one afternoon along with another classmate: Simon. The only thing is, Simon never left detention. Investigators claim that his death was no accident, so now our four main characters are all suspects in his murder. Was it the brain, Bronwyn? The beauty, Addy? The criminal, Nate? The athlete, Cooper? Or perhaps they are the perfect scapegoats for a killer still out and about? As has been our trend with past books lately: this was a fun and easy read. Sure it's a little cliche, and yeah we are probably much too old to be in the demographic for it, but that's also what makes it more fun to talk about. We love giving unpopular opinions and poking light fun, so come join us! Like the sound of it but don't wanna read? You're in luck! This book was recently adapted for TV, and is streaming on Peacock. This week we are discussing the mystery-thriller(?) book: The Last Thing He Told Me By: Laura Dave This book follows Hannah Michaels on a bizarre journey after her husband, Owen, disappears without notice, leaving her behind only a note that reads: Protect her. This leaves Hannah confused and afraid, but she knows exactly to whom Owen is referring, his 16-year-old daughter: Bailey. Bailey, who is not the biggest fan of Hannah to begin with, and thus, a tale of their growing relationship starts. This book was an instant #1 bestselling novel and it was also a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick. It is also currently being adapted into a limited Apple TV series. This book was raved as a gripping mystery novel, and while there are some mystery aspects in the first half, we don't necessarily think that's the best description for it. This week we are discussing the horror(?) book: There's Someone Inside Your House By: Stephanie Perkins This story follows teen Makani Young who is adjusting to her new small town life in Nebraska. She had to move from Hawaii due to an incident in her past. An incident that she desperately wants to keep secret. When a string of grisly murders begin happening to her classmates though, she has new fears to focus on. Can Makani and her friends figure out who the killer is? Will they die trying? Will everyone's dark secrets be brought to light? While this book is marketed as a 'horror' book, we don't really see it as such. It is a very fun read though. It's campy and silly, and definitely plays homage to Scream, which was a big inspiration for this book. There was also a Netflix movie 'adaptation' of this book which we also talk about some towards the end of this episode. This week we are discussing the romance book: Love & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly This story focuses on Dahlia Woodson, a broke & recently divorced woman, and London Parker. They are both competitors on a popular reality cooking show. Both are competing for very different reasons. Dahlia wants to reinvent herself and to prove that she can follow her dreams. London is there to be the first openly nonbinary contestant and to prove haters and their dad wrong as well as winning the money to start a nonprofit. Neither of them expected to find love during the filming of the show, but you can never really plan for that. As the two being to grow closer they discover more about themselves. Each helps the other be more true to themselves. She's cut off from her wealth and exiled to a small seaside town. It's there she has to discover who she really is and also where she butts heads with a surly local who, at first, thinks she doesn't belong. If you enjoy rom-coms with some spice and are a Schitt's Creek fan, this book is for you! As always, our book discussions contain heavy spoilers for every book that we read, this is no exception. **Most of our episodes are labeled as 'explicit' because we do tend to cuss. This week we are discussing the WWll novel: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. All the Light We Cannot See takes place in occupied France during the war and the book centers on a young blind French girl and a German boy who both are just trying to survive and then their paths eventually cross. This novel won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 2015 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. This is a very lovely story that revolves around survival, being kind, and ultimately trying to do the right thing in desperate circumstances. As always, our book discussions contain heavy spoilers for every book that we read, this is no exception. We also always respect and accept that everyone is entitled to their own opinions when it comes to different books, and we hope you can hold us to that same standard in every episode, but especially this one. This week we are tugging our ear right off of our head because we are talking about: The Selection by Kiera Cass The Selection is the first out of five books in this futuristic young-adult series. If you are familiar with The Hunger Games and The Bachelor this book is the illegitimate offspring of the two, but still somehow missing the mark. It's very silly but also, quite fun to read. We had a lot of fun discussing this book, in fact, this may be our funniest episode to date. This episode contains some light riffing (not at all to be taken in a disrespectful way), some re-writing with how we wish the series would go, some internet sleuthing, some predictions, and some all around minor to moderate spoiling for not only this first book but for the series as a whole. (Even though we have only read this first book..*cough* Missy *cough*) So whether this book was part of your childhood, still a favorite, or completely new to you we hope you give it a listen and enjoy! In this episode we are talking about the beautiful book: The Girl from the Channel Islands by Jenny Lecoat This is a historical romance novel that was inspired by true events and tells the tale of a young Jewish woman, Heady Bercu, trapped on the occupied island of Jersey during World War II. This is a lovely story about love, friendship, and a tragic history of our time that should never be forgotten. *This was our first new recording in a year of starting this podcast and it was a lot of fun to be back! Welcome to another episode of It's Lit(erature)! We are a book club podcast, but we are the kind of book club you've always wanted to join...because everyone here is drunk. So grab your drink of choice and come join us for a book discussion! In this episode we are diving into the 'dark' side as we discuss the mystery-thriller "Dark Places" by Gillian Flynn. This book is a murder mystery set in rural America that deals with different class issues and focuses on the Satanic cult hysteria that was big in the 1980s. This book has some very dark subject matter so listener discretion is advised. We would encourage anyone worried to please look up trigger warning before hand. If this doesn't bother you though, come listen as we rant, rave, and talk all things Dark! ***Hey! As we mentioned, we recorded this at 10AM and drank A LOT. It gets pretty chaotic and messy at points, plus we recorded for over 4 hours. So some drastic cuts had to be made. (This was also recorded in March 2021 and is just now being published...oops.) So laugh & cringe at us in all of our messy glory and hopefully you like us enough to come back again, because we have changed our formula for future episodes and we are excited to keep discussing books!
