The Line
Kirk, Canada, and how we get to dark places

The Line

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2025 73:33

In this episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on Sept. 12th, 2025, Rob Breakenridge joins Matt from Calgary, filling in for Jen Gerson, who is on assignment out of town. The two men acknowledge — but deliberately steer away from — the emerging details of the rapidly unfolding Charlie Kirk assassination investigation. Instead, they focus on the bigger picture: the mood, the vibes, and why so many people on both sides of the border seem to be bracing for some kind of civil conflict against a vaguely defined “them.” Neither is certain how Canada, or the United States, can pull back from this trajectory. Or if people really even want to. This episode of The Line Podcast is brought to you by Universities Canada. Canada has promised millions of new homes, shorter waits in health care and stronger defence. But promises don't design and engineer roads, staff clinics or secure networks — people do. That's why we need a clear, coordinated system to attract and retain the world's best talent, while creating more opportunities for Canadians. The best and brightest should always see Canadian universities as their first choice. It's time to put talent at the centre of Canada's priorities. The path forward starts with training people — and Canada's world-class universities are ready to lead the way.To learn more, visit Univcan.ca.After that, they turn to issues closer to home. The Carney government has officially launched its Major Projects Office and revealed the first programs slated for elevation. Rob breaks down what's on the agenda and why, despite the office not explicitly mentioning a pipeline, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has responded positively. Matt, meanwhile, shares the part of the announcement he found oddly amusing — but also despair-inducing — in the way it revealed deeper national challenges. Both men agree that it might be better to just fix the problems with approvals, rather than creating a new, special unit that gives a few chosen projections the efficient treatment, while everything else suffers. Matt quips that this is Canadian health-care-style thinking applied to permit approvals. Should go fine. This episode of The Line Podcast is also brought to you by Forestry For The Future. Canadian forestry supports 200,000 workers, generates $87 billion in annual revenue, contributes $21 billion annually to our nation's economy, and provides the products we need to build homes and drive economic growth. While trade barriers from the U.S. are siphoning jobs and investment away, Canada's own approval processes and regulations are preventing critical projects that both prevent wildfires and boost our economic self-reliance.We can and should have programs that expand domestic wood use, advance biomass use and pulp market opportunities, and cut red tape and regulatory barriers. The government of Canada has a clear opportunity to stand up for Canadian forestry at a time of growing global uncertainty. We need real action that puts Canadians first — supporting employees and their families, securing stability for our businesses, and protecting the long-term potential of our sector and its people. To learn more, visit ForestryForTheFuture.ca.Finally, Matt and Rob interview each other about their latest Line columns. Rob walks listeners through his piece on Alberta's book ban that badly backfired, while Matt explains why he thinks Canadians are rightfully losing faith in their own safety — and why that needs to change if Canada is to avoid sliding down the same dangerous path already visible in the United States.Cheerful stuff, eh? Scripture Reading and Introduction 2 Corinthians 11:16-33 read. Paul's boasting not of the Lord, but foolishly. Details of Paul's suffering: stripes, imprisonment, shipwrecks, perils, weariness, hunger, and concern for the churches. Paul's escape from Damascus. Thankfulness for the opportunity to be present and receive what the Lord has to offer. Acknowledging uncertainty about the direction of the message but trusting in the Lord's guidance. The Song: "Sweet Things Out of Dark Places" A song has been implanted in the soul for about a month. The song's message is particularly relevant given the current trials and tribulations. The song's lyrics: Wanting to know Him better and walk closer. Willingness to suffer for a clearer vision in the valley. Sweet things and heavenly light emerging from dark places. A sweeter touch and deeper love from Him. Brokenness leading to precious words and a revelation of God's glory. The sweetness of darkness when the Father is near. Apostle Paul as an Example Paul as an example of someone in darkness who gloried in his infirmities. Dark places are common, with trials and heartaches affecting many. Comfort in knowing that darkness is temporary and light will come through Jesus Christ. Excitement to share what the Lord has revealed. Dark valleys as a recurring experience. The tendency to let challenges slow down or derail progress. Sweetness emerging from dark places. Recalling the darkness before finding Jesus Christ. Blindness and a misguided pursuit of worldly pleasures. Realization of being disliked by others due to negative behaviors. Sweetness found in a calling from God. A calling once abandoned for two years. The joy and fulfillment experienced when fulfilling that calling. Feeling God's presence and glory while serving Him. Light replacing darkness. Paul's intelligence and upbringing, yet not glorying in himself. Paul's apostleship not of man but by Jesus Christ and God. Galatians 1:1 referenced. Contrast with the replacement of Judas through casting lots. Caution against boasting in what God is doing in one's life. Gratitude for God's grace and what He has done. Boasting only in Jesus Christ and His work. Sweetness will come if one sticks to it. Paul's perilous situations and distress, yet glorying in infirmities. Glorying in Infirmities A personal anecdote about waking up to a car that wouldn't start. Initial reaction of worry and frustration. Failure to glory in infirmities. Even in darkness, God provides a way for light to shine. Paul's suffering: whippings, beatings, shipwrecks, and betrayal. Choosing to glory in infirmities and taking pleasure in knowing Jesus Christ is present. Not bragging about success. Paul preached to kings. Paul started about 20 churches. Paul did not want credit for those things. Paul wrote 13 books of the Bible. Paul did not boast about writing 13 books. Paul preached for around 30 years. Paul saw a vision of the third heaven. Paul did not boast about the vision. Inability to thank God for bad things happening. Admitting the difficulty of willingly enduring suffering. The problem of thinking one shouldn't have to deal with suffering. Paul as second only to Jesus Christ in contributions to the Christian community. Paul confronted Peter for not associating with Gentiles. Philippians 3:7-14 Philippians 3:7-14 referenced. Counting past gains as loss for Christ. Suffering the loss of all things to win Christ. Counting worldly things as dung. Seeking righteousness through faith in Christ. Knowing Him and the power of His resurrection. Fellowship of His sufferings. Pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Forsaking the world. Not advocating quitting one's job but providing for oneself.

Welcome back to All Things Crime! After a short break, I'm excited to return with a powerful and emotional episode. In Part 1 of this episode, I'm joined by author, lawyer, and former California State Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who opens up about the tragic unsolved murder of his father in 2013.In this episode, Mike shares the heartbreaking story of losing his father in a home invasion, the frustration of living with an unsolved case, and how the tragedy led him to write his book Noir by Necessity: How My Father's Unsolved Murder Took Me to Dark Places. We discuss:-The shocking details of his father's murder-Why “safe neighborhoods” may not be as safe as they seem-The flaws and struggles within the justice system-How DNA technology and investigative tools like the M-Vac could bring hope to cold cases-What it really means for families to live with an unsolved crimeThis is not just Mike's story—it's a reminder of how every act of violence ripples through families and communities.

In this message, Pastor J.R. teaches from John 9, where Jesus heals a man born blind, explaining that his condition was not due to sin but so that God's works could be displayed. He highlights how Jesus used messy and uncomfortable means—like mud—to bring healing, suggesting that irritation and hardship can lead to transformation and even be part of our mission.Pastor J.R. encourages listeners to see heartbreak, loss, and anxiety not as punishment but as opportunities for God to work in unexpected ways.

Hey everyone, and welcome back to My Sister's TBR! We're Stacey and Rebecca—your favorite sister duo back with our July wrap-up episode! This month, something wild happened: Rebecca outread Stacey. (No, really. The world tilted. A prophecy was fulfilled. We have the Goodreads receipts.) Stacey hit a bit of a reading slump while Rebecca spiraled into a whirlwind of short stories, romance novels, and a five-star reading high that knocked her into next month. In this episode, we're recapping all the reads from July: the sweet, the swoony, the mysterious, and the murdery (yep). We're also diving deep into our featured read, Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry, which had us unpacking grief, gossip, secret NDAs, and sisters (both fictional and very real—hi!). Let's get into it:What We Read in July:Stacey's Stack (3 Books)*

In today's episode of The Nona Jones Show, I'm joined by Abby Zachritz to discuss the unique challenges—and yes, the joys—of parenting children with disabilities and complex medical diagnoses. Now, before we get into it, let's look at the reality:➡️ In the U.S. alone, 1 in 6 children has a developmental disability.➡️ Over 3 million children live with complex medical conditions requiring ongoing care.➡️ And behind every one of those children is a parent—a warrior—often juggling grief, advocacy, financial stress, and loneliness… all while trying to hold their families together. But here's the thing: in the middle of that storm, there is beauty. There is strength. And there is purpose. And today's guest is someone who embodies all of that and more.If you are a parent walking through this journey—or if you know someone who is—this conversation is your invitation to breathe, to be seen, and to know: you are not alone.

Last week, Dawn and I opened up a side of our relationship we've kept private for years—and the response was overwhelming. After announcing Dawn's OnlyFans and that we were sharing the intimate side of our dynamic publicly for those who wanted to witness it, we received incredible encouragement, some honest questions, and a little judgment. In this episode, I reflect on what this experience has taught me about risk, freedom, love, and masculinity. I share the first email we received just two minutes after our announcement, why 98% of the feedback was positive, and what the 2% of negative responses reveal about illusion, expectation, and control. We'll talk about: • Why listening to the body's wisdom is the foundation of every big decision • The question that sparked a conversation about masculinity and freedom Why defending Dawn's freedom isn't passive—it's the deepest form of devotion What men had to say about this decision that might surprise you • Why almost 80% of our initial OnlyFans subscribers were women—and what that means • How projection, judgment, and control destroy intimacy Whether you agree with our choices or not, this episode isn't about convincing you. It's about showing what's possible when you stop living for approval and start living in truth. ⸻ Links & Mentions: • Listen to last week's episode with Dawn for the full backstory • Connect with us on Instagram @_infinitedevotion • See inside the spicy side of our D/s dynamic at https://dawnofdesire.net • Explore resources for building deeper intimacy and freedom in your relationship at https://infinitedevotion.com

Lewis.   Jackie Newell, from our community group in Tupelo, Mississippi, grew up in church and knew from an early age that Jesus was her Savior.
