John Carpenter has made an impact on film in two different disciplines. As a director , there's so many memorable movies in his filmography: Halloween, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, and They Live – to name a few. His work as a composer is just as iconic. Carpenter scored many of his early films – including Halloween. The music he wrote has influenced an entire generation of horror soundtracks. His latest work can be heard in Halloween Kills, the latest installment in the Halloween franchise. It's out now in theaters and the streaming platform Peacock. When Bullseye got the opportunity to talk with Carpenter, we knew just the person for the job: April Wolfe. She was previously a film critic, and former host of the Maximum Fun genre film podcast Switchblade Sisters. These days she's a screenwriter. April takes a deep dive with John Carpenter on various number of his movie projects and film scores including his Apocalypse Trilogy and Assault on Precinct 13. He also breaks down how he first composed the original Halloween theme – you might be surprised to learn bongos played an important role.
The only thing more ubiquitous in horror during the 2000s than torture porn was the onslaught of remakes audiences were inundated with throughout the aughts. Some would argue that, along with "Saw," the Michael Bay school of low budget, gritty, ultraviolent and "realistic" remakes set the tone for horror for at least a decade. Today, we'll be looking back at two nu-metal reboots of two very different horror classics. First up, it's the 2003 reimagining of the 1974 seminal horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," starring Jessica Biel in low cut jeans and an increasingly wet tank top, R. Lee Ermey as a necrophiliac sheriff, and Sir Eric Balfour as "Kemper." After that, we'll be jumping to 2005 for the incestuous horrors of "House of Wax" featuring Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray and the eagerly awaited big screen debut of Paris Hilton. We're joined by podcast regular, critic and writer Nick Laskin, to discuss the tonally divergent tales of beautiful 20-somethings finding themselves in the clutches of towns seemingly populated only by cannibalistic rednecks. Is "The Texas Chainsaw" remake yet another reflection of post-9/11 America and its bloodthirsty audiences? Should Jessica Biel ever be in a movie set before 1985? Is Paris Hilton really that bad in her big screen debut? Why do the twins in "House of Wax" all wanna fuck each other so bad? Would it be appropriate to get fingered during either one of these movies? Find out right here on your favorite podcast... "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is streaming on Peacock and "House of Wax" is streaming on HBOMax.

After decades of Indigenous stories told by non-Natives, two shows from this past year signal a change. Reservation Dogs from FX on Hulu was created by and stars Native people. It follows four Indigenous teenagers growing up on a reservation in rural Oklahoma, with dreams of adventuring to California. Vincent Schilling, a Native journalist and critic for Rotten Tomatoes, calls Reservation Dogs 'a show about Native American resilience.' Rutherford Falls is a sitcom on NBC's streaming platform, Peacock, which follows a conflict over a historical statue in a small town. When the show was co-created by Sierra Teller Ornelas, she became the first Native American showrunner of television comedy. Teller Ornelas told Audie Cornish this year: "There are five Native writers on staff. We had a Native director for four of the episodes, and this is really a reflection of our shared experience as Native people from nations all over the country." In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment that will help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at email@example.com.

One of my all-time favorite cookbooks has always been The Gift of Southern Cooking, co-written by the iconic and legendary Edna Lewis -- who blazed the trail for black chefs everywhere with her cooking and her writing -- and my patient today, her friend and colleague, James Beard award-winning chef, Scott Peacock. It was such a thrill to get to talk to Chef Peacock about his time with Ms. Lewis (as he calls her), to hear how she impacted his life, helped him embrace his Southern roots, and taught him about the importance of quiet in the kitchen. We go deep about Scott's original ambivalence about the South, how it was tied to his grandmother's poverty, his sense of shame, and how all of that changed after that first meeting with Ms. Lewis over coffee at Dean & Deluca in New York.
