In the spirit of Plato's Symposium, the Slightly Foxed team enter into lively dialogue with two distinguished magazine editors, Tom Hodgkinson of the Idler and Harry Mount of the Oldie, and learn lessons from notable loafers in literature. We begin with Doctor Johnson, an icon of indolence who wrote an essay called ‘The Idler' and liked time to ponder; this lazy lexicographer claimed his dictionary would take three years to write when in fact it would take nine . . . The wisdom-loving philosophers of Ancient Greece made a case for carving out leisure time, while the anchorite Julian of Norwich favoured a life of seclusion in which ‘all shall be well'. At the age of thirty-eight Michel de Montaigne retired to a grand book-filled chateau to test out ideas in essays, while George Orwell wrote book reviews in hungover misery. Izaak Walton found contemplation in The Compleat Angler and Jerome K. Jerome found humour in Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, while the autodidactic Mitford sisters sought wild freedom. We enjoy a leisurely spell with loungers in fiction, visiting Lady Bertram and her pug in Mansfield Park, taking to Lady Diana Cooper's bed in A Handful of Dust, retreating to Aunt Ada Doom's room in Cold Comfort Farm, settling into the quiet comfort of Mycroft Holmes's Diogenes Club and meeting Thomas Love Peacock's Honourable Mr Listless along the way. And, to finish, there are the usual wide-ranging reading recommendations for when you have an idle moment. (Episode duration: 46 minutes; 56 seconds) Books Mentioned We may be able to get hold of second-hand copies of the out-of-print titles listed below. Lea Black steps Behind The Rope. That is correct, the “Mayor of Miami” is here to chat about her time on The Real Housewives of Miami - the highs and lows, the epic fights, the various cast members she saw come and go during her full series run, and the untimely end which left BravoHolics asking “why”? Fear not, the RHOM Reboot is alive and well. We, once and for all, get a clear answer from Lea as to why she is not involved in the Reboot - was she asked?, did she turn Peacock down, or was she not asked? Finally, an answer! Fear not, all your inquires will be answered. Lea shares her thoughts about the Reboot, the returning full time cast members Alexia, Lisa and Larsa Pippen, the newbies Julia and Nicole, and returning “friends of” Marysol and Adriana who somehow seem to have been at every party in every scene of filming… We chat about Joanna Krupa's statements on the Reboot, Larsa returning to TV after Keeping up with many of The Kardashians, and the public's reaction to the return of this once cancelled franchise. "Highly Recommended"In a first, Steve and Kate mostly rave about what we have seen and read. While we have reservations about a few things—sorry, Boba Fett and Sandra Bullock—you'll hear about plenty of worthwhile pop culture. We discuss:Streaming"Picnic at Hanging Rock" , Amazon Prime. In this Australian gothic miniseries based on the 1967 novel, a group of schoolgirls vanish on an outing. Natalie Dormer ("Game of Thrones") plays their mysterious headmistress."We Are Lady Parts", Peacock. This British series about four young Muslim women in a punk rock band turns big ideas about identity, representation, and gender into binge-worthy comedy. Steve says it's "smart and funny, with infectious energy and moving moments too.""Ron's Gone Wrong", Disney +.  In this computer-generated animated film, a lonely middle schooler befriends a defective "B-bot" and learns about true friendship and being yourself. "Shazam!", HBO Max or rental. When 14-year-old Billy Batson transforms into an adult superhero with bulging muscles and superpowers, he's still a goofy kid on the inside.  One of the best DC Comics-inspired movies."The Unforgivable", Netflix.  When Sandra Bullock is released from prison after doing her time, society refuses to forgive her violent past."The Book of Boba Fett", Disney +. In a series from the makers of "The Mandalorian," the "Star Wars" bounty hunter takes off his battered helmet to try to rule over Jabba the Hutt's criminal empire.Novels"The Midnight Library," by Matt Haig. In this enchanting "It's a Wonderful Life"-styled novel, a young woman experiences the different versions of her life  that would have occurred if she had made different decisions."The Atlas Six," by Olivie Blake. Six uniquely talented magicians  compete—to the death—to win a place in the Alexandrian Society, caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity.Popahallics #62 PlaylistAttack of the killer guitars!  This week's playlist includes punk rock (like We Are Lady Parts and Ramones), garage rock (like the Delmonas), surf rock (like the Suffragettes)—and  The Nude Party, whose sound blends the Kinks, Lou Reed, early Stones, Dylan, and CCR.  Lyrically, we ponder such existential questions as: "Davy Crockett, what you got in your pocket?" Sharon Peacock has had a diverse career that has spanned training and experience as a dental nurse, general adult nurse, end-of-life care practitioner, physician, clinical microbiologist, researcher, educator, mentor and non-executive director. This diversity has a common theme, with a lifetime of connection with the National health Service, which Sharon considers to be a jewel in the crown of the UK. She also has a degree in History. Her story is one of endurance training in the art of learning in the service of others – her mantra is ‘learn more to give back more'. Sharon Peacock is currently Professor of Public Health and Microbiology at the University of Cambridge. She is the Executive Director of the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium (or COG-UK), which has sequenced SARS-CoV-2 for the UK pandemic response. This has provided the data to track how the virus evolves and changes to become more transmissible and to dodge our immune system. Sharon was key to establishing the Consortium, which required a leadership style that revolved around consensus and consultation of its 600 members. Making all data and methods open access for others to use has been a guiding principle. Sharon is also a Non-Executive Director on the Board of the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where she chairs the Quality Committee.Endurance and persistence were important to her ability to raise over £60 million pounds in science and research funding, publish over 500 peer-reviewed papers, and train numerous scientists in the UK, and in Thailand where she worked for 7 years. Sharon has received numerous markers of esteem, including being a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2015, she received a CBE for services to medical microbiology, and in 2018 she won the Unilever Colworth Prize for her outstanding contribution to translational microbiology. Her current research focus is future looking and thinking of future generations - how can we create better data linkage combined with the latest diagnostic technologies that together lead to rapid detection and rapid control the next pandemic? Her Leadership tip – Use your power of listening, and think through problems using different perspectives. It's OK not to be okay - yet the world has increasingly become more and more addicted to the quick fix, or the magic pill that will dissipate our problems with one dose, or so they make you think. “Putting profits over people”, the pharmaceutical industry has capitalized on mental health for decades. In today's episode you will hear from Angela Peacock, whose story has been featured in the incredible documentary Medicating Normal, which I believe EVERYONE should watch as a wake-up call to empower and educate ourselves on healing holistically versus being dependent on a system that is capitalizing on being broken. In this conversation, Angela shares with us her own personal experience serving in the military, and seeking solace through the VA system from a non-combat, life-threatening illness. Yet as Anna Lembke, MD, Associate Professor, Stanford University Medical Center, states, “the pharmaceutical industry] wants to disease-ify every single experience because they want to sell their pills to treat it”, where you will hear first-hand Angie's experience in her story of overmedication versus finding natural ways to express her emotions not to  “numb the pain”. Let this story be the light for all who are suffering from mental health to hear how Angie has become a mental health advocate who is passionate about improving the health care system, for she believes this starts not with fighting Pharma (the system), but with empowering ourselves to KNOW what we need to heal ourselves to release this dependency on a system that is NOT serving us. "It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society." -J KrishnamurtiAbout Angie: Angela Peacock, MSW served in the U.S. Army for seven years as a communications specialist. She deployed to Iraq in 2003 and was medically evacuated due to a non-combat, life-threatening illness. After medical retirement and a long period of recovery, she earned her bachelor's in science in psychology and master's in social work from Washington University in St. Louis. She was the first veteran since World War II to be inducted into WashU's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. She is a leader in the St. Louis Student Veterans of America community building and growing three new chapters and organizing a consortium of chapters across the region. Some of Angela's past roles include Veterans of Foreign Wars Legislative Fellow, Wounded Warrior Project Courage Award recipient, member of the WWP National Campaign Team, and finalist for Student Veteran of the Year with Student Veterans of America. Her story of overmedication after trauma appears in the new film Medicating Normal (2020). Her current work is to plan and host community screenings of Medicating Normal across the world where members of the audience are invited to critically think about our modern mental health industry, informed consent, and psychiatric drug use and withdrawal. She is a mental health advocate, a writer, and YouTube creator who travels in her camper van across the United States with her service dog Raider, to improve the mental health care system for veterans and civilians alike.
