Littérature étrangère de Gorian Delpâture : « The Westing Game » d'Ellen Raskin (Monsieur Toussaint Louverture). In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, hosts Meaghan and Arthur welcome listeners to the first episode for March, humorously recalling Arthur's previous oversight of selecting a monthly theme. They introduce March's new focus: villains in literature. This represents a fresh topic compared to their usual monthly themes, particularly diverging from their frequent discussions on science fiction. The hosts also humorously recount distractions from their cats during recording sessions, illustrating how their pets' mischief often interrupts their recording process.Current ReadsThe hosts share their current reading selections. Arthur is reading Transmutation Transience by Darkly Lem, a sci-fi space opera involving political intrigue and assassin thriller elements. Darkly Lem is revealed as a collective pseudonym for five different authors, which Arthur finds intriguing.Meaghan highlights several recent reads;Freda McFadden's thriller The Boyfriend: with its quick, engaging style. She also mentions finishing Sandra Trelekowska's The Ends of Things, appreciating its psychological, character-driven mystery reminiscent of shows like White Lotus. And finally Rachel Harrison's feminist-leaning horror novel So Thirsty, continuing Harrison's tradition of supernatural and feminist-themed narratives. Both hosts inform listeners that reviews for Transmutation Transience and The Ends of Things will soon be available on their website, in the books review section.Defining a Great VillainMeaghan and Arthur then transition into discussing what defines a memorable and impactful villain. They agree that relatability and clear motivations, even if morally questionable, are essential. Meaghan emphasizes the importance of villains whose actions, although extreme, remain understandable in terms of personal motives. Arthur adds that beyond relatability, effective villains require nuanced ideologies and a challenging presence for protagonists, ensuring they are neither easy to overcome nor forgettable. They discuss how overly simplistic, purely evil villains fail to leave lasting impressions. Villains who offer complexity, realism, and genuine emotions stand out and make readers think long after finishing the story. Meaghan suggests these types of villains are far more engaging because they often reflect or comment on realistic human experiences and moral complexities.Iconic Villains in LiteratureThe hosts share examples of memorable villains that encapsulate these qualities. Meaghan first mentions classic examples like Iago from Shakespeare's Othello, who is driven by envy and manipulates events tragically. Arthur cites Randall Flagg from Stephen King's works (The Stand and The Dark Tower series) as a representation of chaotic evil - a character embodying pure chaos, who is both captivating and memorable despite lacking relatability. They also mention Hannibal Lecter, who is frightening precisely because of his sophisticated intelligence and charm juxtaposed against his horrific acts, including cannibalism. Count Dracula is similarly highlighted as iconic, feared yet alluring, effectively symbolizing humanity's fear of the unknown.Meaghan recalls notable villains from children's literature, including Miss Trunchbull from Matilda and the White Witch from The Chronicles of Narnia. Although simpler than adult villains, these characters effectively communicate clear moral lessons to young readers, offering memorable examples of villainy through cruelty or manipulation.Nuanced Villains and Modern LiteratureThe hosts discuss how modern literature is shifting towards portraying villains with greater complexity and nuance, reflecting the complicated world readers now live in. Meaghan argues this change arises from the recognition that society is multifaceted, influenced by the widespread access to information and diverse perspectives. Readers no longer want simplistic moral distinctions but rather prefer villains who mirror the complexity of real life, including morally ambiguous decisions and behaviors. They note the rise of unreliable narrators complicates readers' perceptions of villains and protagonists alike. Megan cites Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl as a prime example of an unreliable narrator drastically affecting perceptions of villainy, where a mid-novel twist completely shifts the narrative understanding.Arthur further supports this idea by mentioning American Psycho, where protagonist Patrick Bateman's narrative unreliability leaves readers uncertain of their feelings towards the character. They agree that such characters engage readers by challenging them to think critically and question what defines true villainy.Wrapping up, Meaghan and Arthur express excitement for further exploration of villains throughout the month, promising future discussions on morally gray characters and various villain types. They conclude by inviting listeners to continue following their deep dive into literary villains and other book reviews on their website, FullyBooked.ca.

"I think David [Fincher] at first was a little disconcerted. I didn't know any of the vocabulary," says Carrie Coon. "After a particularly frustrating day where he was asking for screen direction or something, and I didn't know what he was asking me to do. I said to him, you knew, when you hired me for this movie that I'd never made a movie before. I don't know what you're saying to me. But if you explain it to me, I can do it. I will do it. I just need to know what it is that you're trying to get." Hailing from the Chicago theater scene, Carrie Coon is perhaps best known for her breakout role in 2014's highly acclaimed GONE GIRL, playing twin sister to Affleck's Nick Dunne in the adaptation of the best-selling novel by Gillian Flynn. Other credits include HBO's THE LEFTOVERS, FX's FARGO, Sean Durkin's THE NEST for which she received critical acclaim, and Anthony and Joe Russo's Marvel Universe blockbuster AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, among others. In her latest project, HIS THREE DAUGHTERS, Carrie stars alongside Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen in a tense yet touching story of family dynamics; directed by Azazel Jacobs, the film follows three estranged sisters who come together to try to plan for the inevitable when their father's health declines. Ben Affleck plays that husband, a very-flawed man who has to deal with tabloid "journalists" as he tries to figure out why his wife is missing...and possibly dead. David Fincher's mystery movie has its faults, but it's well-made (of course) and it shows off the savage determination of Pike's Amy Dunne, especially in the last 20 or 30 minutes. We tried to sort through Gone Girl's confusing climax, although that section also has some of the funniest things you'll see in any thriller. So put on your baseball cap (we didn't even bring up THAT silly Fincher/Affleck stalemate!) and mope your way through a charmed life as two people hate each other, but they find a way to make us enjoy all that in this 580th episode of Have You Ever Seen. Well, Actually: the proper pronunciation of Gillian Flynn's first name is a hard G, similar to "gone" and "girl". Also, the editor who typically edits Fincher's movies with Kirk Baxter is Angus Wall, although he didn't help cut this one. In Episode 163, Sara Hildreth, from @FictionMatters and co-host of the podcast Novel Pairings, returns for her third appearance on our show as our expert for Classics & Retellings 101. Sara guides us through the sometimes intimidating world of timeless reads in an accessible way. She busted some myths about classics and changed my mind about some elements of the classics. And, she has a great approach to find the perfect retelling of your favorite classics for your next read.  This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). CLICK HERE for the full episode Show Notes on the blog. Highlights Sara explores the definitions of a classic and a modern classic book. We talk about separating the American literature canon from the idea of a classic. Sara talks about being free to define classics on personal terms. The idea of a book being labeled a “future classic.” Now-famous books that went unnoticed initially when they were released. Sara's personal reading motivations. Common issues people have when trying to tackle classic books. Notable quirks of many classics that were first published as serials. Tips and advice for approaching older books. Addressing the pressure surrounding reading or revisiting classics. Examples of nonfiction classics. Legal considerations for all those retellings. The rise of retellings as a trend with today's audience. The difference between retellings and fan fiction. Sara's recommendations for accessible classic literature. A different approach to finding the right retelling for your reading. Please note: Sara mistakenly mentions during the discussion that The Great Gatsbydid not come into popularity until its distribution to soldiers during World War I, when this actually occurred during World War II. Ever wondered what happens when classic cinema gets a modern twist? Our latest episode peeks behind the curtain of Tim Burton and Gillian Flynn's reimagination of "Attack of the 50-Foot Woman," exploring the depths of womanly wrath and current power dynamics. We kick things off with a chuckle, contemplating the hilariously unintended consequences of our deepest desires—yes, even that cheeseburger comes with a side of irony. And while we're at it, we tip our hats to the comedic prowess of Sacha Baron Cohen, whose characters continue to surprise us despite his fame. From there, we switch gears to honor the legendary Carl Weathers, taking you through his journey from the boxing ring right up to the stars in "The Mandalorian." Horror aficionados, fasten your seat belts as we dissect the spine-chilling '90s classic "Wishmaster," with its blend of stunning and cringe-worthy special effects. The Djinn's transformation is on the chopping block as we rate the effects and draw parallels to a certain Dragon Ball Z figure. And for those horror cameo enthusiasts, we've got your fix with appearances from horror greats like Robert Englund and Tony Todd. But wait, there's more! As we look back fondly at "Starman," we also gear up for the upcoming season of 'True Detective' with eager anticipation. We're not just about reminiscing, though; we're here setting the rules of engagement for movie-watching. No spoilers, no incessant questioning—just the pure, thrilling ecstasy of cinematic discovery. There is so much to say about this movie it's hard to fit it all into one episode. The second act of our show includes a draft of the best movies based on books. Happy Halloween! To end our month of murder mysteries, this week Stauney and Sadie delve into the riveting realm of two iconic characters, Amy Dunne from Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl" and Scarlett O'Hara from Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind," uncovering the eerie parallels in their psychopathic behavior, and the infamous stories they play the title role in. We discuss the differences and parallels in their stories, sharing the plots of the books/movies and the impact that their portrayal of womanhood has on how we view feminity and the society of their time period. We also talk about the general idea of unlikable or villainous female characters, the rarity of psychopathy in women, and the ways that their motivations can be dissected to garner sympathy despite their outlandish actions. Take her 2012 novel Gone Girl, for example, which she later adapted into a smash hit movie with David Fincher. That murder-mystery tale of a marriage steeped in deceit captivated the world and sparked near-endless conversation about the poison and/or empowerment of its main character, Amy Dunne. That novel and movie – released within two years of each other – didn't just make Flynn a literary darling. It also catapulted her to the summit of film and TV. In 2018, she co-wrote the brilliant Widows with Steve McQueen, and adapted her first novel, Sharp Objects, into a gloriously slow-burning limited series starring Amy Adams. Since then, she's won cult acclaim for her streaming adaptation of Utopia, the British Channel 4 series. In the conversation you're about to hear, we ask Gillian how she pens her captivating characters and the social importance of allowing women to run riot on-screen and in her novels, the way that male anti-heroes are frequently permitted to do. She reflects on the accusations of misogyny that her work attracted from some female writers in the aftermath of Gone Girl's release and reveals an alternative ending to that story that would have taken the tale of Nick and Amy Dunne in an entirely different direction.Again, this conversation is in aid of the Entertainment Community Fund, who do extraordinary work lifting up storytellers of all descriptions and have been a vital support for entertainment industry workers affected by this summer's strike action. Fake Kidnapping Victim Sheri Papini Released Early

The curious case of Sherri Papini, a married mother-of-two, captivated the nation when she mysteriously disappeared in 2016, only to reappear weeks later, 'dazed, battered, and bruised,' claiming she was held captive by two fictional Latina women. The saga unfolded with more twists as investigators uncovered Papini's past and her involvement with an ex-lover, James Reyes, whom she convinced to help her escape her allegedly abusive husband. Ultimately, Papini was arrested in March 2022 and pleaded guilty to the allegations in April 2022. She was sentenced to probation for 36 months and served her sentence at the Federal Correctional Institute in Victorville before being moved to a halfway house run by Sacramento's Residential Reentry Management field office.    The bizarre case began in November 2016 when Papini's husband reported her missing after she failed to pick up their children from school. Her cell phone and earbuds were later found on the running track she used. Weeks later, she was found by the side of the road on Thanksgiving, allegedly tortured and starved by her captors, whose faces she claimed she never saw. However, police revealed that she made up the entire story for attention and was actually staying with her ex-boyfriend, James Reyes, during the 22 days she was missing. This revelation drew comparisons to the plot of Gillian Flynn's thriller novel, "Gone Girl."    Papini and Reyes reconnected in 2016 after dating in 2006. Papini convinced Reyes to help her escape her 'abusive' husband, Keith, by arranging for him to pick her up and drive her to his Southern California apartment. Reyes, who admitted to the plot after being identified by DNA found on Papini's clothes, confessed that he thought their relationship would become romantic again, but it never did. Instead, Papini locked herself in his bedroom, starved herself, cut off her hair, and inflicted injuries on herself, even convincing Reyes to brand her with a hot tool. Reyes drove her back to her home in Redding on November 24, unaware of the media storm that had erupted during her disappearance.    Keith Papini, who was duped by his wife, filed for divorce in April 2022, two days after she pleaded guilty to faking her own kidnapping. The couple, who married in 2009, share two children, Tyler, 10, and Violet, 12. Sherri Papini issued a statement last year apologizing for the pain she caused her family and friends and vowing to make amends for the rest of her life. She received over $30,000 worth of psychiatric care for anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, billed to a state victim compensation fund, which is now part of her restitution.    In a shocking revelation, Mike Mangas, a Roman Catholic Deacon and news anchor, disclosed in the upcoming HLN investigation documentary, "Runaway Mom: The Sherri Papini Story," that investigators found a Bible verse, Exodus 21:16, branded onto Papini's shoulder. The verse reads, 'if anyone has kidnapped someone, they should be put to death.'    The Sherri Papini case highlights the complexities of deception, the impact of false allegations on the community, and the consequences faced by those who fabricate stories that captivate the public's attention. As Papini continues her journey of restitution and self-reflection, the case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of truth and the damaging repercussions of deceit.
