Max Jungestål, CEO of Legora, joins Jacob Effron and Logan Bartlett to discuss the company's $550M Series D and share a candid account of what building an AI-native company at speed actually looks like from the inside. Max argues that the AI application layer requires a fundamentally different operating model than traditional SaaS, one built on low ego, constant reinvention, and a willingness to watch nine months of work get washed away by a model update. He walks through how step-function improvements in the underlying models, particularly Opus 4.5 and 4.6, have repeatedly forced Legora to rebuild core product features from scratch, and why he sees that as a feature, not a bug. On the legal industry, Max offers a ground-level view of how AI is actually diffusing through law firms, less through top-down mandates and more through competitive pressure between firms and, increasingly, from enterprise clients demanding efficiency from their outside counsel. He pushes back on the viability of AI-native law firms, dismisses outcome-based pricing as harder than it looks, and makes the case for why foundation model competition creates tailwinds rather than threats for a company with Legora's depth. The episode closes with a detailed look at the US expansion strategy, including the deliberate cultural decisions, like flying all New York hires to Stockholm for onboarding, that Max believes are the real source of Legora's compounding advantage.   [0:00] Intro [1:16] Legora's Series D Story [3:24] Why You Need Low Ego to Build in AI [5:58] From 60% to 100% Accuracy in One Summer [7:04] Law Firm Economics Shift [14:09] Pricing Seats Vs Outcomes [18:31] Why Foundation Models Entering Legal Helps Legora [30:10] Convincing a 75-Year-Old Partner to Go All In [33:02] Hiring Legal Engineers [34:32] Running an AI-Native Company [35:57] The Opus 4.5 Christmas Breakthrough [40:02] Building With Customers [44:01] All In On US Expansion [51:22] Stockholm Startup DNA   With your co-hosts:  @jacobeffron  - Partner at Redpoint, Former PM Flatiron Health  @patrickachase  - Partner at Redpoint, Former ML Engineer LinkedIn  @ericabrescia  - Former COO Github, Founder Bitnami (acq'd by VMWare)  @jordan_segall  - Partner at Redpoint

Join Ocean House owner and author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with author Terah Shelton Harris to discuss her novel Long After We Are Gone.  About Long After We Are Gone: “A big, beautiful, devastating, and ultimately hopeful novel.” – Erica Bauermeister, New York Times bestselling author of No Two Persons An explosive and emotional story of four siblings–each fighting their own personal battle–who return home in the wake of their father's death in order to save their family's home from being sold out from under them, from the author of One Summer in Savannah. “Don't let the white man take the house.” These are the last words King Solomon says to his son before he dies. Now all four Solomon siblings must return to North Carolina to save the Kingdom, their ancestral home and 200 acres of land, from a development company, who has their sights set on turning the valuable waterfront property into a luxury resort. While fighting to save the Kingdom, the siblings must also save themselves from the secrets they've been holding onto. Junior, the oldest son and married to his wife for eleven years, is secretly in love with another man. Second son Mance can't control his temper, which has landed him in prison more than once. CeCe, the oldest daughter and a lawyer in New York City, has embezzled thousands of dollars from her firm's clients. Youngest daughter Tokey wonders why she doesn't seem to fit into this family, which has left an aching hole in her heart that she tries to fill in harmful ways. As the Solomons come together to fight for the Kingdom, each of their façades begins to crumble and collide in unexpected ways. Told in alternating viewpoints, Long After We Are Gone is a searing portrait on the power of family and letting go of things that no longer serve you, exploring the burden of familial expectations, the detriment of miscommunication, and the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children. Laci and Matt are at war with each other like the gunters are at war with the villainous Nolan Sorrento in the Oasis of Ready Player One. And it's all because they can't agree on this movie! Is this the first BAD Spielberg movie the show has covered this summer? Or is it another classic?   First we get into the history of the movie, starting with the career of novelist Ernist Cline. From his humble beginnings as a slam poet in Austin to his screenwriting career working with Harvey Weinstein on the film Fanboys, to writing Ready Player One and creating bidding wars for both the publishing and movie rights, Ernie is a true American success story. And then he got Steven Spielberg to direct the thing! Wow! Will Spielberg use this opportunity to do some crucial self-examination about the role he has played in shaping pop culture, in emphasizing nostalgia and sentiment and comfort amongst moviegoers everywhere, keeping them in a perpetual state of adolescence? Or does he just use the cool toys and giant budget to make a really cool-looking movie?   Then: The movie itself. Has there been a wetter paper towel of a leading man than Tye Sheridan? Future megastar Olivia Cooke is right there, man. Give her the reigns. Anyway, enough editorializing. This episode is having some Ready Player FUN.   Next week: Our Indiana Jones TikTok Live will appear in the podcast feed on August 2. The writer and director Michael Sarnoski says that before he said yes to directing the spinoff A Quiet Place: Day One, he had to be certain he could bring something personal to the franchise world created by John Krasinski. On this week's episode he tells Katey Rich how he did just that, and found remarkable box office success in the process.  But before that, The Ringer's Joanna Robinson joins Katey Rich for our first Oscar flashback, celebrating the 35th anniversary of sex lies and videotape and the indie film boom it inspired. Joanna and Katey look back at Steven Soderbergh's autobiographical inspirations, the performances that hold up the best, and why the Oscars weren't quite ready for this movie, even if they would be now.
