David Gossett enters the world of Insane Clown Posse, one song at a time. For everyone who has questions about ICP, but is too afraid to ask.
The boys are at it again, heading down south to enact violence against rednecks, but is the magic still there? Are they just 'roosting' on their laurels, or is this song truly 'poultry' in motion?
Like an avenging angel, or a Chilean miner, or a rejuvenated phoenix, we are back after a month away!We dive back into The Ringmaster with the track "Murder Go Round", and look at the cycle of gang violence through the prism of undying murder clowns (the most effective prism)! How does it stack up to what Carnival of Carnage has already brought? Listen and find out!
We start the next leg of our journey this episode, diving into 1994's The Ringmaster!Does this album get off to a better start than Carnival of Carnage? You'll have to listen to find out, since that's how learning information works!
Since we wrapped up Carnival of Carnage last episode, instead of jumping right into The Ringmaster, we took a detour to Flavortown and tried out some flavors of Faygo and learning a little about the history of ICP's pop of choice!
We've reached the end of Carnival of Carnage! It's been a long time coming, but we are wrapping up the album with "Taste" featuring a cavalcade of guest vocals! Does axe murder mix well with class warfare? Does Shaggy 2 Dope have Dead Zone powers in regards to Michigan governors? Is the beat some filthy funky bops?! Also, I assure you this isn't a political podcast....
The Penultimate track of Carnival of Carnage is here! Ghetto Freak Show raises questions about the clown life cycle, as well as clown nature vs. clown nurture, set to the smoothest beat so far. All of which does nothing to excuse the homophobic language that tried to sneak by 14 tracks into the album...How does it rank compared to the other songs?
You can't blame me for ranting about the Confederacy this week, ICP invited the discussion with their song "Your Rebel Flag"! Listen to "Your Rebel Flag" hereRead Jason Latour's piece "On The Rebel Flag..." here(It used to be on his tumblr but has since been removed, this imgur link was the best I could find!)
Good news, everyone! This week we cover "Never Had It Made", which is the most peak ICP we have ever encountered. What happens when I fully enjoy a song for a whole episode?! The new ground continues to be tread!Don't believe that this is the best song on this album so far? Listen for yourself: https://youtu.be/HxWOTdY3t9k
Those good boys from Detroit are here to discuss matters of the heart this week, as we discuss "Blackin' Your Eyes" and it's tale of unrequited.... "love". But in a world of getting revenge for a broken heart, who is more insane: ICP, or Carrie Underwood?U Decide!
We drove the car back into Posi-Town this week, as Gossett has a hoot talking about "Psychopathic"!Is society to blame for clown violence? Have I been misinterpreting the music thus far?? Is this track as good as the entirety of the album "good kid, m.A.A.d city"???
Let's wash out the bad taste of "Is that you?" with a song about axe murder called "Night of the Axe"! Surely that subject matter won't segue into real life heinous crime! We learn about dynamite biopic ideas, women being human beings that poop, and how a lyric can take you out of a song fully!
We should have seen this coming. No roller coaster consists of only peaks. We hit the valley in this episode, and we hit it HARD with this weeks track, "Is That You?"Hope you like me being super frustrated about awful misogynistic relationship dynamics and hating Kid Rock for most of the run time!
It's a lonely road sometimes, so to help Gossett along we have Teresa joining us to help talk about the track "Guts on the Ceiling", the best nursery rhyme about bodily dismemberment you've ever heard!
After a cold-induced hiatus, we're back with a real hoot folks, as Violent J must go down the yellow brick alleyway to meet a wizard! But be careful, because you aren't in Detroit anymore....Fantastic eerie background music by CO.AG Music : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcavSftXHgxLBWwLDm_bNvA
Not even the allure of rainforests or the taste of Mofongo can keep me away from ICP, as I check out "Red Neck Hoe" in beautiful Puerto Rico.Misogyny (boo!) pairs with violently assaulting racists (yay!) in this episode's song.
There is an upswing this episode, as Gossett has a good time listening to First Day Out, a tender tale of prison, romance, and fried chicken. Also, rankings begin to take shape!
We begin our journey with despair, as Gossett goes through 3 tracks off Carnival of Carnage in search of something, anything that he can actually talk about. What town has the Carnival come to? Who keeps laughing? And just how precise are Violent J's rhymes? As Thomas Paine once wrote, "These are the times that try men's souls".
For most of my adult life, I've been fascinated by Insane Clown Posse, and by extension their fans, known as Juggalos. Up until now, though, I've never taken the leap myself into the music of a grease-painted generation.Join me on this Odyssey, won't you?
