Patrick gave you a glimpse into the childhood and early years of our brand-new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV (Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost), with the kind of reverent curiosity you'd expect when an altar boy from the South Side becomes the Vicar of Christ. You can listen to his entire hour of commentary about Pope Leo XIV here. Hour 2 is available to listen here. Hour 3 is here. Humble Beginnings in the Windy City Born on September 14, 1955, in Dolton, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago), little Robert Prevost was raised in a faithful Catholic home. His dad, Louis Marius Prevost, was of French-Italian descent and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. His mom, Mildred Martínez, was a Spanish-Creole librarian with deep Louisiana roots. He grew up going to St. Mary of the Assumption parish, where he served as an altar boy. So yes, he literally started out on the altar... just not quite at the Vatican level yet. He has two brothers, Louis Martin and John Joseph. A Brainy & Prayerful Path Young Robert was no slouch in school either; he studied math at Villanova, graduating in 1977. God had bigger plans. He entered the Order of St. Augustine in 1978, professed vows in 1981, and was ordained a priest in 1982. He studied theology in Chicago and canon law in Rome, eventually earning his doctorate from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). From Peru to the Pontificate This wasn’t a man who just sat around in chancery offices. He served as a missionary priest in Peru, taught at seminaries, worked in diocesan offices, and even led the global Augustinian order as Prior General, twice. Eventually, he was appointed a bishop in Peru, received dual citizenship, and climbed the Vatican ranks: prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. If you wanted to become a bishop under Pope Francis? You probably went through his office. Cardinal, then…Pope! In 2023, he was made a cardinal, and by early 2025, elevated to Cardinal Bishop: one of the highest honors in the Church. Just a few months later, he appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, smiling (and maybe a bit stunned), as the world heard those famous words: “Habemus Papam!”: We have a Pope! First Words as Pope Patrick shared audio from Pope Leo’s first Mass, where he began his homily in English before switching to Italian. His opening line was a quote from the Psalms: “I will sing a new song to the Lord, for He has done marvels... not just with me, but with all of us, my brother Cardinals.” It was humble, sincere, and straight from the heart. Fun Fact Corner: There's a photo of him at a Chicago World Series game dressed incognito, talking on a cell phone: captioned: “Here’s the Pope at the World Series.” Instant classic. His childhood home was reportedly listed for $199K the day before the conclave. His Creole roots and international experiences give him a beautiful cultural depth: a bridge between continents, languages, and peoples. From altar boy in Dolton to Peter’s successor: it’s a story only God could write.

Marketing and social media weren't part of Kelly Roach's world when she grew up just above the poverty line in rural Pennsylvania. Bert Terhart is an adventurer, sailor, and lifelong explorer who currently resides on a smaller island off Vancouver Island, Canada, a place with a surprisingly large population of 750,000. Originally from the prairies of Canada near Fargo, North Dakota, Bert grew up in a small, hardworking oil town, shaped by cold landscapes and a strong sense of community. His Dutch heritage, with a family background in the Merchant Marine, ignited his lifelong love of sailing. Bert joined the Canadian Army at 17, attending the Canadian military college, the equivalent of West Point. He served in the Canadian Special Service Force, an elite unit trained alongside the U.S. military, and participated in intense Cold War-era training exercises. His military experience led him to reflect on the harsh realities of war, but he ultimately left the Army and pursued a career in oceanography after being disqualified from the Navy due to colorblindness. A passion for the ocean, history, and exploration led Bert to retrace the routes of legendary explorers like Captain Cook and William Bligh, sailing over 50,000 nautical miles and navigating some of the most remote and challenging regions in the world, including the Arctic Circle and the Bering Sea. He is also known for his solo paddling expeditions across Canada and adventurous voyages in the Southern Ocean.

WATCH | DELMAR SMITH: BIRD DOG & RODEO ICON WATCH | 300. More Than a Dog Trainer: The World of Delmar Smith -------------------- Episode 300! It's hard to believe it's been over five years since starting the show. It's been an incredible journey, capturing conversations with so many people from across the dog training and hunting world. Along the way, I've had the privilege of meeting and learning from some of the most respected voices in the space. That said, I recently had the opportunity to interview perhaps the most legendary name in the bird dog world—Mr. Delmar Smith. Instead of just another interview, this project became a deep dive into Delmar's life, family, business, and the seemingly endless supply of stories that only a man like him could tell. In this special episode, I sit down with the friends who were along for the ride as we reflect on what it was like to get to know Delmar, hear his backstory, and experience firsthand the impact he's had on the world of bird dogs. -------------------- Highlights: 00:00:00 Introduction: The Delmar Smith Experience 00:01:15 Humble Beginnings & Shattered Expectations 00:06:15 The Mission: Honoring the Bird Dog Foundation 00:14:00 Dog Assessment & Confirmation 00:18:45 Delmar's "Accidental" Approach 00:23:30 Observation and Learning from Nature 00:34:45 The Changing Landscape 00:44:30 A Positive Mindset & the Serenity Prayer 00:50:00 The Smith Method & a Life of Intentionality 01:09:00 Training, Balance, and the Pursuit of Knowledge -------------------- Presented By: Standing Stone Supply | Check out their step by step Online Courses and Use Code 'GDIY' to save 15% onX Hunt Maps | Use Code 'GDIY20' to save 20% Upland Gun Company | Check out their online gun builder and construct your dream gun today! The shepherds waiting in the field were at the bottom of society. They were the forgotten, the unknown. They had no reason to believe that they rated a grand announcement of the birth of the Messiah. Sometimes, we wonder, “is the light of Jesus really here?” The shepherds got their answer in a dramatic fashion, ours may be more understated - but the answer for both of us is the same. The shepherds remembered that Israel's greatest king had been a shepherd himself. A humble beginning doesn't mean that God doesn't have grand plans in mind for you. Luke 2:1-20 fmhouston.com
Most of the biblical texts envisioning the coming of the Messiah associate him with royalty. The vision of a gilded savior at the head of an army, ruling on a throne, and bringing prosperity to Israel gave the lower classes hope that their fortunes would one day change. How shocking and unexpected, then, for the Messiah to be born into a low-class family of peasants, too poor to afford a lamb as a sacrifice, too unimportant to sleep in their crowded family's guestroom? What do we learn about the love of God that he would so radically associate himself with the poor and marginalized by being born as one of them?
Micah 5:2 foretells the birth of a ruler from the humble town of Bethlehem, emphasizing God's tendency to work through the overlooked. This prophecy, recognized by Christians as referring to Jesus Christ, inspires reflection on how God can reveal His glory through seemingly insignificant aspects of our lives. The call is to trust in His divine plans. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dailyrowe/support
