Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- The FBI's Greatest Hits: Musicians Under Surveillance

Rock N Roll Pantheon

In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're looking at the clash between music and The Man diving into times when the FBI investigated musicians. In 1956, J. Edgar Hoover's FBI created a covert and legally questionable program called COINTELPRO with the goal of disrupting groups that the Feds considered to be subversive – communists, black nationalists, feminists, anti Vietnam protestors, civil rights activists.  Considering the role that music played in the 60s and 70s, it was only a matter of time before the FBI started investigating rock and roll. Some of the stories are silly. Picture this, it's 1963 and a bunch of FBI agents are hunched over a record player listening to Louie Louie over and over – forwards and backwards – desperately searching for dirty lyrics that didn't exist.  And others are more serious. In 1972, the FBI put John Lenon under surveillance and wiretapped his phone because President Nixon was afraid that his stance on the Vietnam War would influence young voters. The government started proceedings to deport him.  Over the decades, the FBI has investigated or kept tabs on all sorts of musicians. Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison; folk singers Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie; Aretha Franklin, the Monkees, NWA, Charles Mingus, the Insane Clown Posse, and more. There's a lot of ground to cover in this one, but we're up for the challenge. Let's hit it. Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here. Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! No, "Miracles" by Insane Clown Posse (ICP) is not intended as a joke. Despite its viral reception and widespread mockery—particularly the line "Fucking magnets, how do they work?"—the song was created with sincerity. ICP aimed to express genuine wonder at everyday phenomena that are often overlooked. Violent J, one of the group's members, explained that the song is about appreciating the world around us and rekindling a sense of awe that people often lose as they grow older. He emphasized that while many of the things mentioned in the song can be explained by science, they are still incredible and deserve appreciation. The song's earnestness led to it becoming an internet meme, with parodies appearing on platforms like "Saturday Night Live." However, ICP embraced the humor, viewing it as an opportunity to spread their message of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. They clarified that the song was not an attack on science but rather a call to recognize the miraculous in the everyday. In summary, "Miracles" is a sincere attempt by ICP to encourage listeners to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, even if its presentation led many to interpret it as humorous or satirical.DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy! In 1999: The Year Low Culture Conquered America and Kickstarted our Bizarre Times (2025, University of Kansas Press) journalist Ross Benes examines low culture in the late 1990s. From pro wrestling and Pokémon to Vince McMahon and Jerry Springer, Benes reveals its profound impact and how it continues to affect our culture and society today.  The year 1999 was a high-water mark for popular culture. According to one measure, it was the "best movie year ever." But as Benes shows, the end of the '90s was also a banner year for low culture. This was the heyday of Jerry Springer, Jenna Jameson, and Vince McMahon, among many others. Low culture had come into its own and was poised for world domination. The reverberations of this takeover continue to shape American society. During its New Year's Eve countdown, MTV entered 1999 with Limp Bizkit covering Prince's famous anthem to the new year. The highlights of the lowlights continued when WCW and WWE drew 35 million American viewers each week with sex appeal and stories about insurrections. Insane Clown Posse emerged from the underground with a Woodstock set and platinum records about magic and murder. Later that year, Dance Dance Revolution debuted in North America and Grand Theft Auto emerged as a major video game franchise. Beanie Babies and Pokemon so thoroughly seized the wallets and imagination of collectors that they created speculative investment bubbles that anticipated the faddish obsession over nonfungible tokens (NFTs). The trashy talk show Jerry Springer became daytime TV's most-watched program and grew so mainstream that Austin Powers, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Wayans Bros., The Simpsons, and The X-Files incorporated Springer into their own plots during the late '90s. Donald Trump even explored a potential presidential nomination with the Reform Party in 1999 and wanted his running mate to be Oprah Winfrey, whose own talk show would make Dr. Oz a household name. Among Springer's many guests were porn stars who, at the end of the millennium, were pursuing sex records in a bid for stardom as the pornography industry exploded, aided by sex scandals, new technology, and the drug Viagra, which marked its first full year on the US market in 1999.  According to Benes, there are many lessons to learn from the year that low culture conquered the world. Talk shows and reality TV foreshadowed the way political movements grab power by capturing our attention. Pro wrestling mastered the art of "kayfabe"--the agreement to treat something as real and genuine when it is not--before it spread throughout American society, as political contests, corporate public relations campaigns, and nonprofit fundraising schemes have become their own wrestling matches that require a suspension of disbelief. Beanie Babies and Pokémon demonstrate capitalism's resiliency as well as its vulnerabilities. Legal and technological victories obtained by early internet pornographers show how the things people are ashamed of have the ability to influence the world. Insane Clown Posse's creation of loyal Juggalos illustrates the way religious and political leaders are able to generate faithful followers by selling themselves as persecuted outsiders. And the controversy over video game violence reveals how every generation finds new scapegoats. 1999 is not just a nostalgic look at the past. It is also a window into our contentious present. They had to tour and... drop an expanded edition of their album? Well why not? Supersize the record with bonus tracks and a DVD with more freshness than you can juggle and appease the Juggalos. The Joker Cards came and went. The world ended. At least, that's what people thought would happen. There was a Calm, then a mighty Tempest rolled through the land, and we waited through the Eye Of The Storm. Juggalos, Juggalettes, and those who don't identify as such waited for something, anything. Then, Shining in the distance, came a rumbling. The faint sounds of the calliope, slowly growing louder and louder, signaling the return of the Wicked Clowns. But the Carnival has no room for new guests. It's time to hit a hard reset. Mike and Schmeev will be your guides as the explosive new beginning arrives, and the 2nd deck starts to be dealt. This... is Bang... Pow... MUSIC Garth Brooks has been accused of sexual assault and battery in a lawsuit filed yesterday in Los Angeles. In his tear-jerking video for his new single “Temporary,” Eminem reveals that he's going to become a grandfather. The song, included on the rapper's latest album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce),” is dedicated to his daughter Hailie Jade, who surprises her father at the end of the video by gifting him a jersey that reads “Grandpa” with the number one on it and a photo of her ultrasound. Three Days Grace have announced that original singer-guitarist Adam Gontier has rejoined the band -- and current singer Matt Walst is sticking around too. On Wednesday the band posted an audio message on their social media with Gontier leaving a message for Walst saying he was going to be late getting to the studio. A few hours after the Three Days Grace announcement Saint Asonia, Gontier's band with Staind guitarist Mike Mushok, posted a note on their social media that said "Thank you for all of your love and support. We will be back." Foreigner will also perform. Motley Crue's announced a Las Vegas residency that kicks off March 28th at the Dolby Live at Park MGM. Stevie Nicks is joining in on the Kelce holiday fun! For the third year in a row, Jason, a former NFL lineman, will release a holiday album called A Philly Special Christmas Party with former Eagles teammates Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. TV "That '90s Show" star Kurtwood Smith says Netflix is NOT renewing the show for a third season . . . but they're going to try to shop it to other outlets. MOVING ON INTO MOVIE NEWS:   "Monster Summer" (PG-13) Trailer  David Henrie from "Wizards of Waverly Place" directs this nostalgic adventure movie about a kid who teams up with a retired cop, played by Mel Gibson, to solve the mystery of why some of his classmates are acting like traumatized zombies.  COMEDY Check out the trailer for Ali Wong's new Netflix comedy special.
