In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with poet and visual artist Zachary Logan about his beautiful collection of poetry and art, Green (Radiant Press, 2025).  An exciting new collection of ekphrastic poems accompanied by a compilation of green sketches via the lens of a queer poet and visual artist. Zachari Logan carried a sketchbook as he travelled the world and responded to iconic artwork as well as art that once existed but is now lost, destroyed, or far away. Whimsical art and thoughtful poems that ponder the nature of existence. Zachari Logan is a queer Canadian settler poet and artist whose artwork has been exhibited throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Logan's work can be found in collections worldwide, including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Remai Modern, Peabody Essex Museum, McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Nerman MOCA among many others. In 2014 Logan received the Lieutenant Governor's Emerging Artist Award, in 2015 he received the Alumni of Influence Award from the University of Saskatchewan and in 2016 Logan was long-listed for the Sobey Art Award. In 2010, his chapbook, A Eulogy for the Buoyant, was published by JackPine Press and in 2021, A Natural History of Unnatural Things, was published by Radiant Press. Logan's artwork and writing has been featured in many publications throughout the world. Zachari Logan lives in Regina, Saskatchewan. “Green is a ravishing compendium of attention—a book that bristles with subtle and unexpected poetic turns, and the peculiar thrum of being human in a world increasingly out of step with itself. Here, the act of writing is inseparable from drawing, from walking, from remembering, from witnessing—and from loving, deeply, the fragile and persistent textures of the earth. Zachari Logan's poems pulse with vegetal sensitivity, moving between alleyways and art history, between inner monologue and ecological longing. Green is not merely a colour: it is an atmosphere, a consciousness, a sensual and moral register. What it captures is more than the sum of its fragments—it is their residue, their ache, their adaptation, their ephemeral and often unintelligible traces. There is a deep and haunting beauty across these pages, but also fury, wit, and a quiet defiance. A sensual invitation to pay attention, this little but mighty book is not only an artistic gesture, but a political and ethical one. With luminous precision and a mind turned toward both the microscopic and the mythic, Green is a spell cast in language and images—one that lingers long after the page is turned.”— Giovanni Aloi, author of Lucian Freud: Plant Portraits, Botanical Revolutions: How Plants Changed the Course of Art and Speculative Taxidermy: Natural History, Animal Surfaces, and Art in the Anthropocene“A poem in its very color; deep green, wildly queer. This book captivates with its folds and cracks. The dissection of worlds, coupled with meticulous sketches of botany, art and the quotidian carried by the fascinating complexity of nature. One is lost between the body of a naked man or an abandoned thistle flower in a thick ditch. At once a sketchbook, a collection of poems, and an essay- this collection opens a door to the striking universe of Zachari Logan.”— Julie Hetu, author of Pacific Bell, Les dormeurs de Nauru and MotZachari Logan Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of the Artists Academy Podcast, I'm sitting down with the wildly talented muralist Mandi Caskey—aka Miss Birdy—whose colorful, whimsical work totally stopped me in my tracks on Instagram. We talk all about how she went from painting in tunnels for fun to getting hired to paint massive fantasy-inspired murals for cities, festivals, and corporate clients.Mandi shares how a random graffiti hangout in college sparked her love for street art, how she carved her own path despite professors and critics pushing for something more “traditional,” and how she's built a thriving business doing what she loves most—telling stories through playful, larger-than-life murals. We also dive into how she finds clients, the systems she's set up to apply for mural calls, and how her nonprofit, Catalyst Columbus, is helping turn overlooked spaces into bold public art across Ohio. If you've ever dreamed of making a living from your art—and doing it your own way—you won't want to miss this conversation.

Our artists today represent a very specific category within the folk music genre, which lately has come to be known as “Freak Folk”: one is a contemporary singer-songwriter, and the other is an “ancestral” group (when you consider they derived from the early 1970s, before there was even a category for it); one hails from the U.K., the other from California. However, both The Incredible String Band and Joanna Newsom share an “off the grid” sense of musicality and exist in a space well beyond any pop music fashion - past, or present.JOANNA NEWSOMWho doesn't like harp music? It's the preferred instrument of the angels, after all, and Joanna Newsom is indeed one of those. Whimsical, profound, incandescent - all these adjectives apply to this nerdy goddess, who, I was delighted to learn, is also the life partner of the silly comedian, Andy Samberg (and, cousin to the Governor of California). These personal stats ground her in a concrete reality that detracts a bit from her mystery, but, at the same time enhances her approachability. Listening to The Sprout and the Bean is like being gifted a pass to the 100 acre wood to visit Pooh, or transported to an elven glade where everything - (animals, plants, earth, and water) is imbued with magic - where the pantheism between man and nature serenely collapses all sense of temporality…. Whoa…getting a bit woo woo here. Never mind all that. Just enjoy her otherworldly conjurings!THE INCREDIBLE STRING BANDThe Scottish duo of Robin Williamson and Mike Heron formed the nucleus of one of the strangest musical acts of the last century. It takes a moment to get past what initially seems like off-key meanderings to appreciate that there is a deep level of sophistication and prescience here, in terms of world music, that still sounds fresh and modern - over 50 years later.Props to Joe Boyd, the genius UK producer at Elektra records at the time, for discovering, recording, and introducing this band of medievally dressed musical magicians to the world. And, they would have made an even bigger splash (no pun intended), if the inclement weather at Woodstock hadn't delayed their scheduled performing slot - (Melanie grabbed it) - which forced them to crowbar their gossamer stylings within the hardest of hard rock line ups the next day. As a result, their ethereal charms went unappreciated. Our featured cut, Waltz of the New Moon displays their unique vision and vocal technique perfectly.

Dungeons of Hinterberg is a genre-defying blend of stylish dungeon crawling and quirky social simulation set in a magical version of the Austrian Alps. You play as Luisa, a burnt out urbanite turned reluctant adventurer, who finds herself juggling spell-slinging monster battles with making friends among an eccentric cast of mystical tourists. The game's handcrafted dungeons brim with folklore-inspired monsters, clever environmental puzzles, and spells that evolve through relationships not grinding. Combat is light yet strategic, puzzles are creatively woven into the world, and the social sim aspects are full of humor, heart, and surprisingly touching storylines.Whether you're helping a conspiracy theorist “prove” his wild theories or ice-skating through a frozen waterfall to access hidden treasure, Hinterberg charms at every turn. While some pacing and combat depth could use fine tuning, its charm, creativity, and unique identity make it a must-play for fans of games like Persona, Stardew Valley, or Moonlighter especially if you like your dungeons served with a side of awkward flirting and folklore fueled chaos.

What happens when you mix the excitement of an Ohio Stadium VIP tour with the nostalgic charm of Notre Dame's campus and a newfound obsession with online auctions? You get a whirlwind episode filled with laughter, unexpected adventures, and a few lessons learned. We kick off with a hilarious post office story involving an Ohio State hat and take you through our playful missteps in scheduling guest appearances. Our wallets have taken a hit thanks to Whatnot, an addictive auction platform, but the joy of scoring unique finds like vintage video games and vinyl records makes it all worthwhile. Our journey continues as we explore the vibrant world of collecting, from vinyl treasures to quirky Funko Pops. We've had our fair share of wins and woes on trading platforms, navigating everything from funny usernames to toxic environments with humor and resilience. We share anecdotes about mixologist friends, adding a little spice to our auction escapades. If you're a fan of metalcore or parody bands, we've got gems for you too—discussing everything from guitar flips to crab core styles. It's a tribute to the music that rocked our world in the early 2000s and still keeps our heads banging today. And just when you think things can't get any more entertaining, our special guest, President Donald J. Trump, joins us for a chat that's both whimsical and a touch audacious. From wild hypothetical proposals like turning Canada into the 51st state to his witty quips about empathy, humility, and McDonald's, the conversation is packed with humor and a sprinkle of satire. It's an episode brimming with sports enthusiasm, personal insights, and a hearty dose of laughter.Special Thanks to our friend AJ for providing the Trump impression!Send us a text message and let us know how awesome we are! What inspired you to weave these themes together, and how do they relate to the broader human experience? How did you approach building the world of Seasons, and what were some of the unique challenges in creating a story set across different landscapes and "seasons"?Your work often includes flawed and complex protagonists. What can readers expect from the characters in Seasons? You've collaborated with many artists over the years. What drew you to work with Paul Azaceta on this project, and how does his style complement the story?Something so endearing about the first issue is how it seems quite ordinary, yet subtle things like a guy with a jetpack reveal there's more to this world. How do you balance showing too much or showing just enough? If you two were thrown into the world of Seasons, which of you would last the longest, and what ridiculous strategy would you use to survive? So what's The Seasons about?Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn are the Seasons Sisters, the daughters of the world-renowned Seasons Detectives. Ten years ago, their famous parents disappeared. Left to raise themselves, the sisters formed an unbreakable bond. Now that bond is tested as the sisters fall prey to sinister forces. The youngest sister, Spring, is the last hope of saving them from a fate worse than death. Will Spring be able to piece her shattered family back together before it's too late for them all?RICK REMENDER (BLACK SCIENCE) and PAUL AZACETA (OUTCAST) weave an elevated tale of whimsical horror unlike anything ever experienced in comics and it all starts with this double-length premiere issue!

The whimsical world of Wicked: Alice Brooks, ASC

Cinematographer Alice Brooks, ASC was in post on In The Heights four years ago when director Jon M. Chu let her know their next project together was adapting the world-famous Broadway musical, Wicked. With such a huge fan base, Alice and Chu wanted to make sure they respected the musical, but they both wanted to find a dynamic, filmic way to approach the material. “John kept instilling in us, don't make the obvious choices,” Alice says. “We were all creating a world of Oz together that no one had ever seen before, that was magical and wondrous and a little bit different.” Alice chose to go back to the source material for inspiration- the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. “Every single paragraph has an incredibly rich color description. Beautiful, poetic, just the world of Oz in color. It's unbelievable. And color means something, color is symbolism in Oz. No color is arbitrary.” Alice embraced all the colors of the rainbow for Wicked. They chose the color palette of pink and green for Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), with pink hued lighting to represent hope and connection between the two characters. In Wicked, good and evil are not as clearly defined as in typical fairy tales, since it's the origin story of how Elphaba becomes the wicked witch. Alice knew she could play with light and contrast between the two characters. Sunrise lighting would represent Glinda, while sunset and darkness represented Elphaba. Alice made notes in the script for time of day as references for each character. She worked closely with gaffer David Smith to create complex lighting cues throughout the film to match sunrise for Glinda and sunset and darkness for Elphaba. Early on, the production team discussed how to create the magical world of Oz without relying on bluescreens or virtual production. In London, they built real, massive, practical sets just like in old Hollywood movies. Alice remembers that Wicked used 17 sets that were 85 feet by 145 feet, with four huge backlots: Munchkinland, Shiz University, the train station, and Emerald City. Each was the size of four American football fields. “We had real tangible spaces to light and to create in,” she says. “And we didn't live in a blue screen world that so many movies do these days.” To create just the right green skin tone for actress Cynthia Erivo, Alice and makeup designer Frances Hannon did several makeup and lighting tests on different shades of green. It took a lot of trial and error to find the right shade of green- many hues simply looked like paint, or appeared grayish under the lights. As the DP, Alice also had to choose what lenses Wicked would use to capture both the scope and intimacy of the story. She worked with Dan Sasaski, Panavision's senior vice president of optical engineering and lens strategy, to create the Ultra Panatar II series of lenses for the film. For closeups, Alice chose a 65 mm lens for Cynthia Erivo and a 75mm lens for Ariana Grande because she found that a slightly different focal length for each actress worked best, due to the different shapes of their faces. In this episode of Reading With Your Kids host Jed Doherty had a chance to  catch up with he queen of whimsy, Sheri Fink. Sheri told us all about her latest children's book, Magenta. This 17th book from Sheri is truly special - it features elaborate illustrations and a mesmerizing holographic rainbow gold cover that dances in the light.  Sheri shared the creative process behind Magenta's stunning visuals, explaining how she collaborated with her printer to bring her vision to life. "I wanted something really special, not just a basic gold foil," Sheri told us. After seeing samples, they landed on the magical holographic effect that makes the cover seem to shimmer. The story of Magenta follows a lost kitten who discovers a magical cottage and gets enchanted with powers by a young sorceress. Sheri's whimsical tales always spark kids' imaginations, and Magenta is no exception. She loves helping young readers imagine themselves in fantastical situations and learn valuable life lessons. Sheri also opened up about how becoming a mom has changed her writing process. Instead of marathon sessions, she's had to become a "sprinter," efficiently using short windows of time to write. But she's found that this has made her an even better author. Next, we chatted with sister duo Sharmilla Fassbender and her sister Sharminey Selvanathan about their uplifting picture book, Fantastically Me. This celebration of self-love and authenticity is so important in today's world of social media and constant comparison. Shaminey explained that the book's message is simple: "Life is better when you're yourself, authentically yourself." She and Shamilla want to empower kids to be proud of who they are, not try to be someone else. The sisters have a wonderfully collaborative writing process, taking turns drafting the rhyming text and combining their ideas in a shared document. And they see their meetups as joyful family time, enjoying the "chaos" of parenting young kids. Both Sheri and the Fantastically Me authors are creating books that celebrate individuality and inspire young readers. It was a pleasure chatting with these talented, passionate writers.
