Hi Backwater Bastards listeners! This week, we're bringing you an episode of another show we think you'll love: Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode!! Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode is the latest actual play narrative fantasy series from Geek & Sundry in partnership with Realm. Using the popular TTRPG Dungeons & Dragons, Goblin Mode tells an ever-evolving improvised story full of magic, monsters, and mayhem. Goblin Mode is not your traditional fantasy story. These aren't the mighty warriors who would be called to a tavern by a mysterious stranger. Rather, these characters would be mere crossbow fodder for a group of actual intrepid heroes. Lead by storyteller Amy Vorpahl and cast members Jason Nguyen, Danielle Radford, and Dan Casey, Goblin Mode tells the tale of a trio of hapless minions – a goblin and two skeletons – toiling their days away in the service of an evil necromancer. When a band of treasure-hungry “heroes” attack the dungeon they once called home, these poor unfortunate souls wind up trapped in a pit. By the time the dust settles, everyone they knew is dead, their old lives are gone, and their home is under new management. Will they seek vengeance? Will they realize there's more to life than the Cave Allegory they lived in? Will they become the hope the world needs to stop its impending doom? Find out for yourself with the very first episode of Goblin Mode. Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and wherever fine podcasts are served. This week we've got guest mage Felicia Day and resident director Michael Fell on the show to talk about what it was like to onboard our first star, the joy of live theatre, collaborative story telling, piles of treats, and murdering NPCs. Felicia Day has appeared in numerous television shows and films such as “Supernatural”, “Eureka” and “The Magicians”. However, Felicia is best known for her work in the web video world. She co-starred in Joss Whedon's Internet musical “Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog,” which won an Emmy in 2009. She also created and starred in the seminal web series “The Guild” which ran for six seasons and won numerous awards for web video excellence. Felicia expanded the brand into numerous directions, including a hit comic book series with Dark Horse Comics. Recently, her outfit from the show was added to the Smithsonian American History collection as an example of early web media pioneering. In 2012 Felicia created a production company called Geek & Sundry. The channel garnered over 2 million subscribers on YouTube in three years and created such gaming hits as Wil Wheaton's “Tabletop” and the RPG sensation “Critical Role”. The company was sold to Legendary Entertainment. Felicia produced content there until 2018. Felicia currently works as an actor, producer, writer and streamer. She's written two New York Times bestselling books and recently wrote the hit Audible Original “Third Eye“. She streams on Twitch weekly, has two podcasts, Felicitations! and Undressing with Tom Lenk, and writes a monthly newsletter, “Felicitations!” Want to Adventure with us??? Francis W. “Steve” Stephenson was the founder of Steve's Sundry Books and Magazines in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which he opened in November of 1947 at 12th and Harvard. Steve shared part of a building with Ernest Moody of Moody's Jewelry. He met his wife Hazel while earning a marketing degree from Oklahoma A&M now known as Oklahoma State University. After graduation he went to work for a variety store known as S.H. Cress. After serving in the Navy as a recruiter during WWII, he returned to Tulsa and eventually opened Steve's Sundry, which was a complete drug store without the pharmacy. In the early days of the store, Steve sold boat motors, lawn mowers, fishing tackle, and became the first dealer in Oklahoma to sell Zebco reels. It was in 1958 that Steve moved the store to its present location at 26th and Harvard. Steve became known for promoting local authors hosting around 100 book signings a year, often for first-time authors. While big chain bookstores have come and gone, this small, independent bookstore remains open largely due to the personal attention given by Steve and now his daughter-in-law Joanie Stephenson. Steve was an avid tennis player, winning the over 70 and over 80 tennis championships in the National Senior Olympics. This interview was conducted in 2009 when Steve was 91. He had a tennis match scheduled for that afternoon. He was 93 when he died on Tuesday, November 22, 2011.

They get into all the greats, plus the weird ones from the ‘80s no one remembers. Also get a whole history of Ub Iwerks.

Fortunately, Justin and Justmark didn't mind missing “shoot, shovel and shut up” because doin's were to be discussed: a positive word or three about hybrid automotive technology, the growing dumbness of nanny tech in cars, Eneos sneg for fun and kitchen, Van Café and LaRue for edible freebies, and Dude Food ala dove and grilled sirloin from Omaha Steaks. Summary: You're out of this world, listener! Join Holly and Devin today as they discuss books set in or featuring outer space. Devin has always been obsessed with space exploration and studied it in college, whereas Holly only really wants to read about this subject in her books. Whether you have a passion for astronomy or astrology, whether you dream of flying to the moon or are glad your feet are firmly planted on earth, these books have something for you! Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:41): Devin discussed A Cosmic Kind of Love by Samantha Young, a unique romance following event planner Hallie Goodman and NASA astronaut Christopher Ortiz as they orbit each other and then collide. After discovering his video diaries from the ISS (International Space Station), Hallie develops a crush on the charismatic astronaut and starts to send her own recordings to his discontinued NASA email address. Little does she know, though, that Chris is watching them and developing a crush of his own. Devin's key takeaways were: Not only is the book full of videos where Chris describes what it's like to live on the ISS, but there's metaphorical space for better and worse laced throughout this novel. Chris works for NASA and did 5 months in space, but both he and Hallie struggle with space, taking up more of it in their lives and not letting it get in the way of their fledgling romance. Both protagonists have a lot of trauma and a lot of current struggles with their families, especially their parents. This informs how they show up in their relationship and how they react to various triggers. A lot of the book involves the repair or boundary setting of Hallie and Chris with their families. Chris, having dated a socialite named Darcy and Hallie who is consistently wrapped up in the world through her work have to fight for their positions in society and for authenticity in their relationships. Even Hallie's dad struggles with posturing and connection when he buys a gigantic house to make his ex jealous. The Dagger (23:48): Holly discussed Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty, book one in the Midsolar Murders series and a novel following Mallory Viridian, a human living on the space station Eternity amongst various species of aliens. Having left earth after realizing that people connected to her are murdered at an alarming rate, Mallory's existence on Eternity is peaceful… until a shuttle full of humans comes to the station and the bodies begin to pile up again. Holly's key takeaways were: One of the best aspects of the book was the various aliens on board, ranging from the Gneiss who are creatures made of living rock to the Sundry, an insect species similar to wasps who have a hive mind and can only communicate with you if three or more of them gather together. The murder mystery component of the story felt misleading - there wasn't so much the real focus of this story and didn't come together in a way that felt satisfying; there was some confusion on the core thrust of the plot and what the reader should be focused on. Ultimately, this book had a lot of promise and intriguing world building of alien species cohabitating in a sentient space station, but the execution felt chaotic and messy. If you're looking for a sci-fi thriller with a unique twist, though, check out this series. The latest earnings call from Digital Brands Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:DBGI) presented a comprehensive overview of the company's recent financial performance and future outlook. The CEO, Hil Davis, commented on the significant impact of promotions, suggesting that they have witnessed one of the most promotional periods in the company's history. Such insights align with trends observed across the retail sector, amid other industry counterparts like Home Depot, Target, Levi's, and Nike. Forecasts shared during the earnings call evidenced an anticipated growth trajectory for Digital Brands. Notably, expectations for a near 100% surge in revenue in forthcoming quarters underline the company's robust growth strategy. The financial landscape for the group comprises both positive and challenging elements. Driven by the marriage of revenue growth and cost synergies, the brand has leveraged its operations meaningfully. A substantial uptick in gross margins stands testament to this profitability. However, the company also acknowledged the softening of e-commerce trends in response to a more complex macroeconomic environment. The successful turnaround of the Sundry brand was highlighted as a significant component of the company's growth plan. Increasing wholesale bookings, consistent product sell-outs, and heightened interest from major retail chains all contribute to this shared optimism. Coupled with an expectation to generate internal free cash flow, improve their debt position, and achieve balance sheet cleanup, the company seems to be taking stride. On its investment goals, Digital Brands seeks an EBITDA neutral-to-positive stance in the coming quarter, with several variables in their favour, including wholesale bookings, e-commerce and store revenue, reorders, and licensing income. With a revenue growth target of more than 50% for the first half of the year, the group aims to reach EBITDA positive territory by the trailing two quarters. The company is embracing efforts to attract investors who are committed to the brand's fundamentals and metrics. They believe the value inherent in these trends are undervalued on the public markets, which allows potential upside for savvy investors. A leasing agreement for an outlet store is also being finalized. This new venture is expected to further bolster monthly cash flow, further solidifying the company's fiscal health. Overall, the earnings call from Digital Brands Group, Inc. suggest a balanced approach to managing a complex financial environment while remaining committed to significant growth and improvement objectives.
