We have two special guests with a special friendship from the Marianopolis Addendum podcast! They attended elementary school together in Vietnam and are attending the same college as international students in Quebec. They gave a few important insights, things that I haven't given much thought, including: - Office hours aren't as useful as we think; - Teachers need to help students grow and improve. Just being nice isn't that helpful, and; - Students, don't flirt in breakout rooms. Enjoy!! Find me on IG: @roa_podcast

Sixth and last confession from an educator - some students were just not teachable, at least not within my abilities. I hate to say it, but it is what it is.
Do you think this is a bad thing or a good thing? I take it as a blessing - the fact that I'm not inclined to - nor do I have good reason to - expect or want greatness from anyone. That's not why I'm teaching. As cheesy as this sounds, it's the effort that counts for me.
I don't believe everything anyone says (and neither should you!), but here are some things in particular that I hear students say a LOT that make me question if it's true or not. Enjoy!
Confessions #3: How I am with students vs how I am with everyone else is so very different! Students who I've worked with may possibly think I'm very friendly and patient and nice. Well, sorry, but I'm like that with almost anyone!
Why don't I ever hear teachers talk about how nervous they get teaching a class or how nervous they used to get when they started teaching? As if it all comes naturally! It does not. Here is confession #2 where I talk about my experiences teaching for the first time and when I judged a teacher for being bad when he was probably just nervous.
Have you ever been told that there is no such thing as a stupid question? Well, in real life, that's not true. People ask stupid questions all the time. Season 3 is all about my life as an educator, and as such, I hear all kinds of different questions and inquiries from students. I know why we say that there are no stupid questions, but, let's get real here. Of course there are.
A very special episode for me as this is the first ~*UNSCRIPTED*~ episode! I just wanted to sit down, relax, and look back on my time podcasting so far. I comment on some of my favorite episodes, behind the scenes details and things that I learned so far. Grab a glass of wine and wind down with me. Thank you for sticking with me through my podcasting journey! I'll be back on February 16, 2021!IG: @roa_podcast
Oh look, a book that I actually love! For this week's episode, I (re-)read Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. It's no secret that my favorite book genre is Young Adult Fantasy and this book is one that I think is the best that this genre has to offer. Why? Because the story is wonderful and magical, the writing is lyrical and beautiful. It quite literally slays.Let me fangirl for a minute (or thirty). IG: @roa_podcast
As I get older, I realize more and more how important it is to know the history of the land I grew up in. It's the responsiblity of every responsible citizen to know the past as it shapes the society we live in today. This episode is on how this country, Canada, was founded on a land that was already occupied by the Indigenous peoples. I can't claim to know much, but this is a start. I read "Who's land is it anyway: A Manual for Decolonization", which is a collection of essays written by Indigenous and non-Indigenous academics, activists and allies and I lay out for you the functioning of colonization.
I always confuse these three terms. I sometimes use them interchangeably. It's hard for me to clearly and accurately express myself with these terms. If you're like me, I'm hoping that this episode clears things up for you a little bit. I read "White Fragility" by Robin Diangelo (2018) who clearly defines these three terms and explains what roles each play in our society. She also talks about why it's so hard for White people to talk about racism and I picked three reasons to share with you all. I learned so so much from reading this book! If you want to know more, I recommend you pick this up!
If you don't know who Richard Feynamn is, I'm here to tell you about him! This episode is a commentary on "Surely you're joking Mr. Feynman!", an autobiography by the one of the most important theoretical physicists of the 20th century. He's not only known for being a brilliant scientist but also for being an excellent communicator, someone who is perfect for teaching and explaning complex theories in a way that is absorbable by a wide audience. I think everyone can learn a lot from such a character!Don't worry, this episode isn't science-heavy. It's just me being a wannabe seeker of knowledge, rambling on about how I would love to have his curiosity and his natural drive to broaden his knowledge about the world.
Still reading Alan Chalmer's 'What is this thing called science' to talk more substance about the philosophy of science. I focus on some of the most influential theories that try to encompass a unviersal standard (or lack thereof) for how science is conducted, along with its strongest advocates. That includes positivism, inductivism, Karl Popper's falsificationism, Thomas Kuhn's paradigms, Lakatos's research programs and Feyerabend's anarchistic theory of science. Pheewww I know that's a lot. Think of this as a crash course of the philosophy of science that you never asked for!
Long title, I know. I almost don't need a description. This week, I talk about giving a classic a shot and how that went for me. Because I don't like reading classics, I easily chose the one that is considered the best one of all time: The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I give a summary of the plot and main characters WITHOUT SPOILING (!!), I discuss two parts of the book I found interesting (sad I couldn't talk about more) and what I feel post-read. So if you were ever contemplating whether you should read this book or not, have a listen!Do I recommend this book? Yes I do.
Poetry has never been by go-to genre, but it seems like poetry is loved by many which makes me think that there's some value in it and it's worth giving it a shot. For this episode, I read The Sun and her Flowers by Rupi Kaur and I talk about what I thought about the book and my opinion on poetry after reading it. Do you enjoy poetry? If so, what does it mean to you? Follow me on Instagram @roa_podcast
Here's a more personal story of how my proficiency of the Korean language evolved and improved over the years, from learning how to speak, read, write, all the way to learning a few hundred chinese characters used in Korean while learning Japanese. To be honest, I don't have an affinity for languages and I'm not particularly good at it, but I keep seeking to improve myself. Listen to find out why! A discussion based on: The Fall of Language in the Age of English by Mizumura MinaeWow what a difficult episode to write. I am by no means an expert on languages or the history of literature. This episode is me trying my best to convey the sequence of events that transformed languages that led to this age of English with the intention of questioning what it means to be a bilingual, what does the national language mean to people and why it's important to retain our native language.Follow me on Instagram! @roa_podcast
Contemporary fiction is not my favorite genre, but back in 2018, after watching the movie trailers multiple times, after watching the movie in theaters and being really excited, I had to pick up Crazy Rich Asians (the whole trilogy!)Starting with a quick summary of the book, followed by what I thought were the biggest strength and the biggest weakness of the book, and finishing up with why this books means so much to Asians worldwide, this episode is a classic book review! [THERE ARE SPOILERS] Follow me on Instagram @roa_podcast !!Enjoy :)
The ability to connect to the world through video, audio, satellite started with Michael Faraday. The engine, the motor, the transformer are thanks to Michael Faraday. But, his extraordinary genius isn't even what makes him my favorite!Whether you are interested in sciences or not, I believe that it's important for everyone to know a little bit about the man who found fundamental connections between electricity, magnetism, light and gravity. I want to tell you about his accomplishments, his genius and his admirable qualities, along with exactly what makes him my favorite scientist: the fact that he was a man of faith, his battle with mental illness and that he came from poverty to become the most celebrated scientist of his time.I love picking favorites. Lucky for me, it's a great way of learning about people who made an impact on humankind and being inspired by their journey.Don't forget to follow me on IG @roa_podcastEnjoy!!
After having devoted all of my post-secondary education to that of science, it turns out I can't easily answer this question: "What is science?". Some people mentally recoil from questions like "What is" as it seems 'too' philosophical, but my burning question is: How come I spent years learning sciences but not what IS science? Much of this episode is spent ranting about this frustration while I discuss the book "What is this thing called Science?" by Alan Chalmers. Enjoy! Don't forget to follow my instagram @roa_podcast to keep up with updates!!
Welcome back to Roa's Podcast!! This new Season will be about all kinds of different books that are, in one way or another, important to me. This first episode is devoted to the book that got me into reading in the first place: Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. I read this when I was 16. SIXTEEN. Before that, I didn't read AT ALL. By re-reading it, I got to assess what made this book so easy to get into. Sometimes it's not a bad idea to read an easy book to get into the mood of reading!Don't forget to follow me on IG @roa_podcast
Back in June when I started planning for this podcast, I knew that I wanted self-love to be the topic of the last episode of Season 1. I discuss why I think people have a hard time growing their self-love and I spend some time talking about prioritizing yourself, believing in yourself and loving yourself more than anyone else in the world. I hope this gives you a little bit more courage to focus on yourself! In this episode, I break down what is going on with the overflow of bad coverage concerning k-pop and the truth about the DARK SIDE OF KPOP. Everything I say in this episode is my opinion based on the 12 years I've spent following k-pop news from both Korean and Western news outlets and how I interpret the reaction by the western media towards the popularity of k-pop.Music: Alex Vincent - Sora 3 (Innocence)https://open.spotify.com/artist/0SWV4ArnoOHgrwwysXexbh?si=9Wp5l1-oSFeWgG2MUcmO7A Follow on social media!IG: @roa_podcastFB: @RoaRosePodcast

I'm finally calling myself an adult, but with a long way to go. After much brainstorming and writing out what it means to be an adult, I narrowed down the defining characteristics to (1) Accountability, (2) Self-control, and (3) Ability to change with personal examples of each. Of course I'm no expert, but by writing it out, I had the chance to gain a clearer direction in my mind. These are points I think we should all work on ourselves as we grow older. I wasn't planning on making a preview for this episode, but while editing, I felt the strong urge of making a short video in order to put this out there as soon as possible. I talk about my attitude towards racism while growing up and how my view fundamentally changed recently after gaining some new insights.I read a few passages of "What Does it Mean to be White" by Robin DiAngelo (2016) to give listeners an idea of the kinds of information I was exposed to that changed my mind. The objectification of Asian women, the emasculation of Asian men and the disregard of Asian youth.Let's be clear. Asian Americans experience racism. Everyday. And we should not be excluded from the conversation. After spending 10-20 years as a student, can we really be expected to become "an adult", a professional, right away? That's kind of unrealistic if you ask me. In this episode, I talk about that transitional period, straight out of school into the workforce: how I jumped from place to place, what it was like to be jobless for 6 months, and the most important rule. Work hard. Always. I'll tell you why I think back at my University days as lonely and discouraging and I'll tell you what I did to make it a little better for myself.
