Một nghịch lý đặc biệt trong tiếng Hàn là từ 자살 – “tự tử” – khi đọc ngược lại sẽ thành 살자, nghĩa là “hãy sống” hoặc “chúng ta cùng sống nhé”. Cách chơi chữ này từng được sử dụng như một lời động viên: khi ý nghĩ tuyệt vọng xuất hiện, hãy thử đảo ngược nó để nhắc mình rằng vẫn phải tiếp tục sống. Thế nhưng tại một xã hội thường bị người trẻ mỉa mai gọi là “địa ngục Joseon”, việc lựa chọn sống đôi khi cũng trở thành một cuộc đấu tranh đầy mệt mỏi. Áp lực học tập, cạnh tranh việc làm, giá nhà đắt đỏ, nợ nần, làm việc quá sức, sự cô đơn và nỗi sợ bị bỏ lại phía sau khiến nhiều người cảm thấy dù đã cố gắng đến đâu, cuộc sống vẫn không trở nên dễ dàng hơn.  Quốc gia có tỉ lệ tự tử số 1 trong nhóm OECD Hàn Quốc được biết đến với kỳ tích kinh tế, công nghệ hiện đại và sức ảnh hưởng mạnh mẽ của làn sóng Hallyu. Tuy nhiên, quốc gia này đã duy trì tỷ lệ tự tử cao nhất OECD trong hơn hai thập niên. Năm 2024, tỷ lệ tự tử của Hàn Quốc là 23 - 28 người / 100.000 dân, tùy theo tiêu chuẩn tính toán. Tuy nhiên dù tính toán theo phương pháp nào thì tỉ lệ tự tử của Hàn Quốc vẫn cao hơn gấp đôi mức trung bình của khối, điều này cho thấy mức độ nghiêm trọng của vấn đề. Vì vậy, tự tử tại Hàn Quốc không còn là bi kịch cá nhân mà đã trở thành một vấn đề y tế công cộng và xã hội.  Áp lực thay đổi theo từng giai đoạn của cuộc đời Theo thống kê của Cơ quan Cảnh sát Quốc gia Hàn Quốc năm 2021, các vấn đề tâm lý và tâm thần chiếm tỷ lệ lớn nhất, với khoảng 40%, tiếp theo là khó khăn kinh tế và sinh kế với khoảng 25%, theo sau đó là bệnh tật (18%), gia đình (7%), và áp lực công việc (~4%). Nguyên nhân dẫn đến khủng hoảng cũng thay đổi rõ rệt theo từng độ tuổi.  Ở thanh thiếu niên và người trẻ, nguy cơ thường gắn với áp lực học tập, bắt nạt, khó tìm việc, thu nhập bấp bênh và tương lai thiếu ổn định; trong khi người trung niên chịu sức ép lớn từ sinh kế, nợ nần và trách nhiệm gia đình. Với người cao tuổi, bệnh tật, nghèo đói và cô đơn là những yếu tố nổi bật. Nam giới có tỷ lệ tự tử cao hơn do thường phải gánh kỳ vọng về vai trò trụ cột nhưng lại ít chia sẻ cảm xúc và ngại tìm kiếm sự hỗ trợ, khiến khủng hoảng khó được phát hiện sớm.  Xã hội đầy sự thù ghét Nhà văn đoạt giải Nobel Han Kang cho rằng tình trạng thù ghét ngày càng lan rộng tại Hàn Quốc và trên thế giới là một thách thức mà xã hội phải cùng nhau vượt qua. Phát biểu bên lề Liên hoan Avignon, bà nhấn mạnh rằng đây là thời điểm con người cần nghiêm túc suy nghĩ về cách thoát khỏi sự chia rẽ và tìm một hướng đi khác, thay vì tiếp tục chìm sâu trong “kỷ nguyên thù ghét”. Tại Hàn Quốc, sự thù ghét không chỉ thể hiện qua xung đột giới tính, thế hệ, khu vực hay chính trị mà còn lan rộng trên mạng xã hội dưới hình thức bôi nhọ, bình luận ác ý và tấn công tập thể. Trong một xã hội vốn chịu nhiều áp lực về thành tích, kinh tế và sự cô đơn, những cuộc công kích này có thể làm trầm trọng thêm khủng hoảng tâm lý ở người dễ tổn thương. Năm 2022, một nữ streamer từng bị các “cyber wrecker” đăng tải nội dung cắt ghép, giật gân và kích động đám đông công kích dù cô đã lên tiếng giải thích. Những lời miệt thị tiếp tục lan rộng trước khi cô qua đời do tự tử, cho thấy bạo lực trực tuyến có thể để lại hậu quả nghiêm trọng ngoài đời thực. Không thể quy một bi kịch cho riêng một nguyên nhân, nhưng việc liên tục bị hàng nghìn người chế giễu, phán xét và cô lập có thể đẩy một người đến cảm giác tuyệt vọng sâu sắc.  Bắt nạt từ trường học đến nơi làm việc Bắt nạt, đặc biệt là bắt nạt trên mạng, là một trong những yếu tố xã hội có thể làm gia tăng nguy cơ khủng hoảng tâm lý và ý nghĩ tự tử ở thanh thiếu niên Hàn Quốc. Nghiên cứu của giáo sư Choi Jung-ah thuộc Đại học Kyungil, thực hiện trên 3.775 học sinh trung học cơ sở, cho thấy ngay cả khi đã tính đến các yếu tố như trầm cảm, căng thẳng và lòng tự trọng, nạn nhân của bắt nạt trực tuyến và phân biệt đối xử vẫn có nguy cơ xuất hiện ý nghĩ tự tử cao hơn đáng kể. Bắt nạt không chỉ xuất hiện trong trường học hay trên mạng mà còn tồn tại tại nơi làm việc. Hai trường hợp nhân viên Naver qua đời vào năm 2021 và 2022 đều được gia đình và công đoàn liên hệ với tình trạng chèn ép, khối lượng công việc quá mức và việc phản ánh không được xử lý thỏa đáng. Các vụ việc cho thấy khi tiếng nói của người lao động bị xem nhẹ, môi trường làm việc độc hại có thể làm trầm trọng thêm khủng hoảng tinh thần và dẫn đến hậu quả nghiêm trọng. Theo hãng tin MBC, văn hóa bắt nạt “taeum” trong ngành điều dưỡng Hàn Quốc đã được liên hệ với nhiều trường hợp nhân viên y tế qua đời sau thời gian chịu áp lực và chèn ép tại nơi làm việc. Các vụ việc của nữ điều dưỡng Park Sun-wook năm 2018, Seo Ji-yoon năm 2019 và Kang Soo-bin năm 2026 cho thấy tình trạng mắng nhiếc, cô lập, giao việc quá sức và xử lý khiếu nại thiếu hiệu quả vẫn kéo dài. Giới chuyên gia cho rằng cần giảm khối lượng công việc, bảo vệ người tố cáo và xử lý nghiêm hành vi bắt nạt để ngăn những bi kịch tương tự tái diễn.  Áp lực công việc Khác với bắt nạt mang tính trực tiếp, kiệt sức nghề nghiệp có thể hình thành từ khối lượng công việc kéo dài, thiếu quyền tự chủ và môi trường tổ chức không thân thiện. Một nghiên cứu đăng trên tạp chí Frontiers in Public Health vào tháng 9.2023 do hai bác sĩ tâm thần học Hàn Quốc Jeon Sang-won và Cho Sung-jun thực hiện trên hơn 13.000 lao động thuộc nhiều lĩnh vực như sản xuất, tài chính, dịch vụ, phân phối, xây dựng và hành chính công cho thấy áp lực công việc kéo dài và tình trạng kiệt sức nghề nghiệp có thể làm gia tăng đáng kể nguy cơ xuất hiện ý nghĩ tự tử ở người lao động.  Kết quả cho thấy những người rơi vào trạng thái kiệt quệ về thể chất và cảm xúc có nguy cơ xuất hiện ý nghĩ tự tử cao hơn 36% nếu đã mắc trầm cảm và cao hơn 77% ngay cả khi không mắc trầm cảm. Nguy cơ đặc biệt gia tăng ở những người không thể tự chủ trong công việc hoặc làm việc trong môi trường thiếu thân thiện. Nhóm nghiên cứu nhấn mạnh rằng kiệt sức nghề nghiệp cần được xem là một dấu hiệu cảnh báo quan trọng, không chỉ ở nhân viên y tế mà trong mọi ngành nghề.  Chênh lệch giàu nghèo sâu sắc Tỷ lệ tự tử cao tại Hàn Quốc không chỉ liên quan đến sức khỏe tâm thần mà còn phản ánh khoảng cách giàu nghèo và một xã hội đặt nặng địa vị, thu nhập và tài sản. Những người làm công việc có vị thế thấp hoặc thu nhập bấp bênh thường dễ bị coi thường và chèn ép. Theo Yonhap, văn hóa “gapjil - 갑질” – lạm dụng quyền lực của người ở vị trí cao hơn, giàu hơn – thể hiện rõ qua các vụ nhân viên bảo vệ chung cư bị cư dân lăng mạ, hành hung và đối xử như người hầu. Trong một trường hợp, biểu ngữ tưởng niệm một bảo vệ tự tử sau thời gian bị ngược đãi còn bị tháo xuống vì cư dân lo ảnh hưởng đến giá trị căn hộ. Sự việc cho thấy tài sản đôi khi được đặt cao hơn phẩm giá và sinh mạng của người lao động. Cũng theo Yonhap, áp lực kinh tế cũng có thể đẩy các gia đình yếu thế vào bế tắc, như trường hợp một người cha thất nghiệp đã tự tử cung với bốn đứa con của mình dù đã nhận một phần hỗ trợ phúc lợi. Thủ tục phức tạp, nguồn trợ giúp hạn chế và tâm lý xấu hổ khiến nhiều người không tiếp tục tìm kiếm hỗ trợ và tự tử là một giải pháp mà họ nghĩ tới khi bất lực. Một xã hội thành công nhưng ngày càng cô đơn Sự phát triển nhanh chóng của Hàn Quốc đã làm thay đổi sâu sắc cấu trúc gia đình và cộng đồng. Gia đình nhiều thế hệ dần được thay thế bằng gia đình hạt nhân và hộ độc thân; người trẻ rời quê lên thành phố, người cao tuổi sống một mình ngày càng nhiều, trong khi áp lực công việc khiến các mối quan hệ gia đình và xã hội dần trở nên lỏng lẻo. Sự cô đơn đặc biệt nguy hiểm đối với những người vừa trải qua điều trị tâm thần. Khi rời bệnh viện, họ có thể quay trở lại căn nhà trống vắng và tiếp tục đối mặt với nợ nần, thất nghiệp, bệnh tật hoặc mâu thuẫn gia đình, nhưng không có người thường xuyên theo dõi và hỗ trợ. Vì vậy, xuất viện không đồng nghĩa với việc nguy cơ đã chấm dứt; ngược lại, đây có thể là giai đoạn người bệnh cảm thấy cô độc và dễ tổn thương nhất. Theo OECD, năm 2023, tỷ lệ tử vong do tự tử trong vòng một năm sau khi điều trị nội trú tâm thần tại Hàn Quốc là 6,9 trên 1.000 bệnh nhân, thuộc mức cao nhất trong các quốc gia được so sánh. Thực trạng này cho thấy khoảng trống lớn giữa bệnh viện và cộng đồng: nếu thiếu nhân viên quản lý trường hợp, dịch vụ chăm sóc tại địa phương và sự phối hợp lâu dài với gia đình, người có nguy cơ cao có thể nhanh chóng bị bỏ lại một mình sau thời gian điều trị ngắn ngủi.  Hiệu ứng Werther và trách nhiệm của truyền thông Nhiều nghiên cứu tại Hàn Quốc cho thấy sự ra đi của người nổi tiếng có thể làm gia tăng hành vi tự tử trong công chúng, hiện tượng được gọi là “hiệu ứng Werther”. Một nghiên cứu của các bác sĩ thuộc Bệnh viện Đại học Kosin và Đại học Dong-A đã phân tích hơn 1.000 trường hợp tự gây thương tích hoặc có hành vi tự tử được tiếp nhận tại bốn trung tâm cấp cứu ở Busan trong giai đoạn 2007–2009, sau sự ra đi của một nữ diễn viên nổi tiếng và một cựu tổng thống. Trong 60 ngày sau hai sự kiện, số bệnh nhân trung bình mỗi ngày tăng khoảng 30–40%; tỷ lệ phải điều trị tại khoa hồi sức tích cực cũng tăng gần gấp đôi.  Một nghiên cứu khác của Đại học Korea, phân tích biến động tỷ lệ tự tử trong cộng đồng sau 10 vụ tự tử của người nổi tiếng giai đoạn 1994–2005, cũng ghi nhận mức gia tăng có ý nghĩa thống kê. Tác động rõ nhất xuất hiện sau sự ra đi của nữ diễn viên Lee Eun-ju, đặc biệt ở người trẻ, người có trình độ đại học và nhân viên văn phòng. Tỷ lệ tự tử cũng tăng sau một số trường hợp người nổi tiếng khác, cho thấy mức độ ảnh hưởng có thể khác nhau tùy sức lan tỏa của từng sự kiện. Xu hướng này thường đạt mức cao nhất trong tháng đầu tiên, giảm dần ở tháng thứ hai và trở lại mức thông thường sau khoảng ba tháng. Các kết quả cho thấy người đang gặp khủng hoảng có thể tự đồng nhất mình với nhân vật nổi tiếng, từ đó làm tăng nguy cơ hành vi bắt chước, nhất là khi truyền thông đưa tin dày đặc, giật gân hoặc lãng mạn hóa bi kịch.  Chuyển đổi chứ không phải phòng ngừa Dù tình trạng tự tử tại Hàn Quốc đã ở mức đáng báo động trong nhiều năm, vấn đề này vẫn chưa được chính quyền ưu tiên tương xứng. Chỉ khoảng 10% nghị sĩ tham gia diễn đàn phòng chống tự tử, trong khi sự quan tâm từ cấp lãnh đạo cao nhất còn hạn chế. Hàn Quốc đã có đường dây nóng và trung tâm hỗ trợ, nhưng khả năng tiếp nhận, hướng dẫn can thiệp và theo dõi lâu dài vẫn chưa đáp ứng nhu cầu. Bên cạnh đó, sức khỏe tinh thần chưa được xã hội coi trọng như sức khỏe thể chất, khiến nhiều người ngại tìm kiếm sự giúp đỡ. So với nhiều nước OECD, hệ thống phòng chống tự tử của Hàn Quốc còn thiếu sự phối hợp, nhân lực và trách nhiệm rõ ràng. Kinh nghiệm của Nhật Bản cho thấy Hàn Quốc cần coi đây là nhiệm vụ quốc gia, tăng đầu tư và xây dựng hệ thống hỗ trợ liên tục từ bệnh viện đến cộng đồng.  Khủng hoảng tự tử không thể được giải quyết chỉ bằng những lời động viên, đường dây tư vấn hay các chiến dịch ngắn hạn. Điều cần thiết là một sự chuyển đổi sâu rộng trong cấu trúc và văn hóa xã hội. Hàn Quốc cần rời xa mô hình lấy hiệu suất, thành tích và lợi nhuận làm thước đo duy nhất, để tiến tới một xã hội đặt con người, sự chăm sóc và phẩm giá ở vị trí trung tâm. Một quốc gia bao dung không đánh giá con người dựa trên nghề nghiệp, thu nhập, giới tính, tuổi tác, ngoại hình hay hoàn cảnh sống; đồng thời phải bảo đảm rằng người yếu thế được tiếp cận phúc lợi mà không cảm thấy xấu hổ hoặc bị loại trừ. Từ giáo dục, lao động đến chính sách và ngân sách, mục tiêu giảm tỷ lệ tự tử phải được hiểu là một cam kết làm cho xã hội bớt khắc nghiệt và nhân ái hơn. Đảo ngược hai âm tiết có thể biến 자살 thành 살자. Nhưng để biến tuyệt vọng thành hy vọng, Hàn Quốc cần nhiều hơn một cách chơi chữ: cần xây dựng một xã hội thực sự khiến mỗi người cảm nhận được giá trị của mình và biết rằng luôn có một nơi để tìm kiếm sự giúp đỡ.

On 18th December 2025, the offices of two of Bangladesh's biggest newspapers, The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, were surrounded by mobs, attacked and set on fire. At The Daily Star, journalists were forced to take shelter on the roof of the building as smoke billowed through the lift shaft. They were rescued hours later by the military and many required hospital treatment. The BBC's Soutik Biswas went to Dhaka to talk to journalists caught up in the violence and to investigate the social media posts that may have driven it. Hallyu, or the Korean wave, is what South Koreans call the international success of TV shows like Squid Game and K-Pop Demon Hunters. The phenomenon has grown exponentially since the 1990s, encompassing South Korean music, TV, drama, food and cosmetics. Boy band BTS have been central to the Hallyu craze since they got together in 2010. Their decision to go on hiatus so they could complete their military service sparked debate in South Korea. Now, as they prepare for a huge return concert in Seoul, Suhnwook Lee of BBC Korean joins the online queue for tickets.
