QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Peace is more than the absence of war. Peace is accord. Harmony.”~Laini Taylor, award-winning fantasy author “Instead of hating the people you think are war-makers, hate the appetites and disorder in your own soul, which are the causes of war. If you love peace, then hate injustice, hate tyranny, hate greed – but hate these things in yourself, not in another.”~Thomas Merton (1915-1968), Trappist monk and writer “The theologian who has no joy in his work is not a theologian at all. Sulky faces, morose thoughts and boring ways of speaking are intolerable in this science.” “Loving us, God does not give us something, but Himself; and giving us Himself, giving us His Son, He gives us everything.”~Karl Barth (1886-1968), Swiss Theologian in Church Dogmatics “The Trinity is not some inessential add-on to God, some optional software that can be plugged into him. At bottom, this God is different, for at bottom, He is not creator, ruler, or even ‘God' in some abstract sense: He is the Father, loving and giving life and love to his Son in the joy of the Spirit. A God who is in himself love, who before all things could ‘never be anything but love.' Having such a God happily changes everything.”~Michael Reeves, Delighting in the Trinity “From harmony, from Heav'nly harmonyThis universal frame began…”~John Dryden (1631-1700), England's first Poet Laureate “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”~Augustine of Hippo (354-430), Confessions “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”~Jesus in John 14:17 (ESV)SERMON PASSAGEGalatians 5:19-26 (ESV)Galatians 5 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. John 16 [Jesus speaking] 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. Romans 5 1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 8 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Romans 14 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

GLEN SPEY AUTHOR HONORED AT HOLLYWOOD AWARDS GALA Featured in New Release Glen Spey, New York author T.J. Knight is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored along with eleven other winning writers and twelve winning artists at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 28th. His story, "The Fall of Crodendra M," is illustrated by Chris Arias of Cartago, Costa Rica who is himself a winner of the Illustrators of the Future Contest. The story and illustration along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art are published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39 which was officially released on May 16th. T. J. Knight is the pen name for a regular dude who lives in New York (upstate, not city) surrounded by oaks and pines, deer and turkeys, a cat, son, wife, and on holidays, a daughter. He makes soap, bakes too many paleo brownies, reads, runs, and writes. His favorite authors are K. L. Going, Laini Taylor, and John Steakley. While this may seem an eclectic group, he reads more for style than content. And oh, the style! You can find his flash-length works in Every Day Fiction and Daily Science Fiction. His longer works appear in Future Finalists Publishing's Starlight series where he served as editor for volume two. In his story, “The Fall of Crodendra M” T. J. attempts to highlight the drawbacks of our evolving hyper-individualism. Technology allows us to remain home and watch weddings, graduations, and funerals on screens. This quickly went from unheard of to accepted, perhaps with normal coming soon. So as more and more of our entertainment is streamed into our living rooms (be it from space or otherwise), this story explores the meaning of actually visiting a friend or loved one instead. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 40th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (Quantum Night), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), David Farland (Runelords), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book).

Let's celebrate Candace Robinson's fantastic new dark fantasy book, The Bone Valley on The Witty Writers Show. I'm so excited about it. Candace Robinson is awesome at writing dark fantasy that you can't put down. Here's the info and links for The Bone Valley. The Bone Valley Blurb: He's a lover. She's a thief. A magic bond like no other will tie them together. After the death of his parents, Anton Bereza works hard to provide for his younger siblings. Love has never been in the cards for him, especially after desperation forces Anton to sell himself for coin. And he has no idea that, beneath the city of Kedaf, lies a place called the Bone Valley. When Anton's jealous client plots against him, he is cursed to spend eternity in a world where all that remains are broken bones. There, Anton meets Nahli Yan—a woman who once tried to steal from him—and his cards begin to change. But as the spark between them ignites, so does their desire to escape. All that stands in their way is the deceitful Queen of the Afterlife, who is determined to wield her deadly magic to break Anton and Nahli apart. Forever. Perfect for fans of Laini Taylor, Leigh Bardugo, Kerri Maniscalco, and Erin Morgenstern. Candace's Bio: Candace Robinson spends her days consumed by words and hoping to one day find her own DeLorean time machine. Her life consists of avoiding migraines, admiring Bonsai trees, watching classic movies, and living with her husband and daughter in Texas--where it can be forty degrees one day and eighty the next! Willkommen zum Lesemonat August! Durch unser 100. Folgen-Jubiläum eine Woche verspätet, aber das bedeutet nur, dass wir NOCH MEHR Bücher besprechen können
In this week's episode we talk about Strange! Both the strange summer book choices Jerrica made and the actual Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. We admit even our window of reading this week was tight, so if you haven't finished, listen along to Lia's awesome summary that is nearly as long as the book. Kidding, that's impossible. Afterwards, learn how Jerrica got through the book with the help of google in a mini game called Name that Word. We introduce the next book, The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow and predict the plot. Feedback Tilly and the Bookwanderers by Anna James (rec’d by Lauren) Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor (rec’d by Leenie) Questions 1. At the recommendation of the podcast, last year I read (and loved!) Braiding Sweetgrass and The Overstory. I’m looking for more books to add to my TBR list with naturalist elements. Is there a book version of Planet Earth but with trees and plants?? Like many I’ve had a challenging year with quarantine stress and non-COVID health issues, so I would prefer something that isn’t a portrait of grief (H is for Hawk, beautiful but too sad!) or about the total destruction of our world as we know it due to climate change. Open to all genres except horror, and please no sexual violence or violence towards children. Thank you! -Emily 2. I am sure you have recommended this type of book before, but unsure how to find them. I have not read a romance book in years and feel the need to. I can not remember a book that would closely match what type I would like to read. Its the ‘Will they or Won’t they’ type of romance. Some examples of tv shows that display this is as follows: Castle: Richard & Kate, Moonlighting: David & Maddie, The Nanny: Fran & Mr. Sheffield, The X-Files: Mulder & Scully, Remington Steele: Remington & Laura, Law & Order SVU: Elliot & Olivia, House: House and Cuddy, Bones: Temperance & Seeley, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, Frasier: Daphne & Niles, Star Trek TNG: Picard and Beverly and The West Wing: Donna & Josh. I know, mostly 80’s shows. Once they are together, I am no longer interested. Also bonus if female in story somehow gets hurt physically and he helps her out. I am not picky as to if it’s an action, contemporary, fantasy, gothic, historical romance etc. book or not. Thank for your help. -Kelly 3. After years of working from home, I’m about to start commuting again, and will be spending at least 2 hours a day in the car. I’m hoping for an entertaining and engaging audiobook with a plot that hooks you in, to help me pass the time. I’d prefer fiction, as right now I only really listen to nonfiction audiobooks and am looking to expand my horizons, but I’m open to anything. I’m open to any genre, but my favorites are mysteries/whodunits, fantasy, and historical fiction. (Sorry if this is too vague!) Thank you so much, I’m such a big fan of the show

A 5-minute meditation on hope with affirmations coinciding with the podcast Perceptions of Hope. What is being hopeful? Waiting for an event or situation to work out for us. To hope that we can have control over a situation outside of us, which is out of our control. Let's have hope help us. Help quiet the mind. Bring a smile. A warm feeling in this moment. Hope lightens a stressful time. It's a feeling of freedom from a current challenging event. And as author Laini Taylor stated... “Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.” Make sure you're in a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted. Either sitting up with straight spine, hands-on lap, or lying down with palms facing up, in an open gesture for accepting. Comfort is key. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in through the nose expanding your belly for a count of 4 and hold for the count of 4 and slowly release to the count of 4. Two more times. Now focus on your natural breathing. I am hope I feel hopeful I love and accept myself I love and accept others I am safe I feel safe I am strong I feel strong I am compassion I feel compassion If your mind starts wondering it’s okay just bring your focus back to the breath. (repeat affirmations 2 more times) Take a deep breath in and slowly exhale take your time and open your eyes. May this beautiful day be filled with hope and compassion. Many blessings Sincerely by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://filmmusic.io/song/5033-sincerely License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

Oh look, a book that I actually love! For this week's episode, I (re-)read Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. It's no secret that my favorite book genre is Young Adult Fantasy and this book is one that I think is the best that this genre has to offer. Why? Because the story is wonderful and magical, the writing is lyrical and beautiful. It quite literally slays.Let me fangirl for a minute (or thirty). IG: @roa_podcast
"Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic."In this episode of Fictional Hangover, Amanda and Claire talk about teeth, wishes, hope, beauty, magic and whimsy in their discussion of Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, narrated by Khristine Hvam, featuring music by Lyss Emerson.
In her beloved Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, a portal fantasy spanning Earth and the angel- and chimaera-populated land of Eretz, Laini Taylor cemented her reputation as a creator of rich, expansive worlds, author of impossible love stories, and spinner of narrative spells. In her new Strange the Dreamer duology, she introduces an unlikely hero: Lazlo Strange, an orphan-turned-librarian whose obsession with the lost city of Weep leads him, finally, to its borders. The duology closed in October with Muse of Nightmares, a book that is glitteringly magic, achingly romantic, and stuffed with gorgeous prose. We talked with Taylor about her process, her perfectionism, and her fictional obsessions.
In this freshest of episodes, Aimee's back! And with the recent changeover to 2018 in mind, the gang explores the concept of "new years," along with ideas about reassessment, resolve, resolutions, goal-setting, intention, transformation, and much, much more. As a girl, Laini Taylor wanted to be a writer. She would dream up magical worlds filled with witches and monsters. But once she got into high school and college, she started reading literature — all those serious books about the real world that serious people read. And she stopped writing.“I had no life experience,” she laughs. “And really nothing to say. I felt a lack of ability to contribute to that body of work.”Then years later, she read a little book you might've heard of. Harry Potter? And her childhood imagination rose up like a phoenix.“That whole ‘write what you know,' you don't have to do that,” she says. “I find it much more fun to imagine what I don't know and want to figure it out.”Since then, Taylor has imagined stories to incredible success. Her early collaboration with her husband, the illustrator Jim Di Bartolo, “Lips Touch,” was a finalist for the National Book Award, and her “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” trilogy is an international best seller. We sat down with Taylor at her Portland home. It's sunny and bright and filled with wonder: paintings of her characters, small figurines of magical creature, princess dresses for her daughter Clementine Pie, and a library with a grand fireplace and floor-to-ceiling book shelves that seems right out of a fairy tale. Which is fitting: Taylor launched a new series this week about a young librarian who also has big dreams, “Strange the Dreamer.”Taylor will read from the book and talk with Sara Grundell of the YA website Novel Novice at Powell's at Cedar Hills Crossing on Apr. 6.
