Let's start this week with the theme TRAVEL THE BOOK: SINGAPORE STYLE. We'll virtually visit two main attractions before quickly understanding why Singapore is one of the most visited cities in the world. Then, on to our book...   The brilliant and beautiful Rachel Chu is shocked to find that the man she's been seeing for two years is wealthier than anyone she's ever known or heard of — ever. When she attends his best friend's wedding in Singapore and meets his family and inner circle, a shocking discovery about her own family will test the limits of her relationship and reveal she knows as little about herself as she does about the wealthy. This week we are joined by three of the stars of HBO Max's House of Ho, siblings Judy and Washington Ho and his wife Lesley Ho, to discuss the upcoming second season of the hit reality series. The Kardashians meets Crazy Rich Asians, the series has joined the likes of Bling Empire in featuring affluent Asian American families in the reality TV space. While the first season dealt with sibling rivalry, marital problems and a divorce, the second season sheds some light on Washington's recovery and sobriety, as well as the family's growth since its inaugural season in 2020.    “I saw the success of the Kardashians and thought ‘my family's pretty interesting, too!'” Washington shared, speaking on the origins of the series. “I had a few friends in Hollywood that were producers, made a few phone calls and they said ‘you might have something here'. Then Crazy Rich Asians came out and showed me that there was a market for this.”    “I didn't believe him until the cameras actually showed up!” Judy chimed in with a laugh. “And even after we filmed, I didn't believe it until I saw the marketing for it on HBO Max. Not all of Washington's ideas work, but when they work they're home runs.”   When speaking on the biggest lesson learn, Washington delved into the varying generational and cultural depictions of masculinity and how “vulnerability is courage. Being an Asian male, I thought vulnerability was weakness, but having to be on-camera, being honest, and being your authentic self has really changed my life for the better.”   Season two of House of Ho premieres August 25th with new episodes weekly.

We're watching Crazy Rich Asians this week! Economics professor and lifelong New Yorker, Rachel Chu, goes to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick to meet his family and attend a friend's wedding. There's just one problem. Nick never mentioned that he was rich, crazy rich, and Rachel is not at all prepared to be part of his world. She's left feeling like the villain in a soap opera trying to steal the eligible bachelor all of the more qualified women want. We watched this movie on Amazon Prime and HBO. It's starring a lot of people: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina and Ken Jeong to name a few!

In this episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, two films that delayed production to get their star of choice on board. The Living Daylights - the 15th James Bond film - ended up with around 18 months start to finish to get made. And it was complicated by the fact that the search for a new 007 wasn't going entirely to plan. With Crazy Rich Asians, the core of behind the camera creatives would have never had to work again had they sold the film to Netflix. But they accepted a much lower offer from Warner Bros for the film - and they certainly had their reasons for doing so. Stories of both are told in this episode. An in-depth celebration of the romantic comedy's modern golden era and its role in our culture, tracking the genre from its heyday in the '80s and the '90s, its unfortunate decline in the 2000s, and its explosive reemergence in the age of streaming, featuring exclusive interviews with the directors, writers, and stars of the iconic films that defined the genre.  No Hollywood genre has been more misunderstood--or more unfairly under-appreciated--than the romantic comedy. Funny, charming, and reliably crowd-pleasing, rom-coms were the essential backbone of the Hollywood landscape, launching the careers of many of Hollywood's most talented actors and filmmakers, such as Julia Roberts and Matthew McConaughey, and providing many of the yet limited creative opportunities women had in Hollywood. But despite--or perhaps because of--all that, the rom-com has routinely been overlooked by the Academy Awards or snobbishly dismissed by critics.  In From Hollywood with Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy (Day Street, 2022), culture writer and GQ contributor Scott Meslow seeks to right this wrong, celebrating and analyzing rom-coms with the appreciative, insightful critical lens they've always deserved. Beginning with the golden era of the romantic comedy--spanning from the late '80s to the mid-'00s with the breakthrough of films such as When Harry Met Sally--to the rise of streaming and the long-overdue push for diversity setting the course for films such as the groundbreaking, franchise-spawning Crazy Rich Asians, Meslow examines the evolution of the genre through its many iterations, from its establishment of new tropes, the Austen and Shakespeare rewrites, the many love triangles, and even the occasional brave decision to do away with the happily ever after. Featuring original black-and-white sketches of iconic movie scenes and exclusive interviews with the actors and filmmakers behind our most beloved rom-coms, From Hollywood with Love constructs oral histories of our most celebrated romantic comedies, for an informed and entertaining look at Hollywood's beloved yet most under-appreciated genre. On the show today… Actress Constance Wu, known for her roles in Hustlers and Crazy Rich Asians, has shared an emotional statement about how a series of tweets left her facing a mental health struggle that saw her disappear from Hollywood for three years. And Ana de Armas has given a new interview about the “horrible” media attention she faced while dating Ben Affleck, but we've spotted a pretty big flaw in her story (although we agree that Ben Affleck probably ruined her life for a while there). This same interview has also landed Jamie Lee Curtis in hot water, so let's unpack exactly what happened. Plus, it's Weekend Watch time! This week we need to talk about a series that's getting a whole heap of Emmy praise and a sweet new romantic comedy that will fill you with joy. On Reddit, Paul Sarker decided to answer some questions from MCU fans about how the legal side of things functions.   One fan asked about NDA's and their stipulations. To this question, Sarker delivered the most extensive answer about how these agreements are drawn up and executed. It's a fascinating window into the creative process.   Sarker's answer: "The NDAs are helpful and they frame the discussion, if there is ever a dispute. But the relationship is also important. Leaking something would burn a bridge and be a deal breaker. Plus everything is watermarked so they would be able to trace it to someone. And more importantly, why would you want to eliminate your chance of being in the MCU or television canon? Once someone is cast and under contract, they may be able to disclose their role but that would have to be coordinated with marketing and creative. There is an overall master plan behind all of that stuff. If you breach a contract, in addition to being sued they could terminate it or withhold some pay. As we revealed in recent weeks, Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) and The Suicide Squad breakout Daniela Melchior are also among cast.   Filipino-American actor Santos is best known for playing Oliver T'sien in Crazy Rich Asians and sales associate Mateo Liwanag in the NBC series Superstore, for which he was nominated for back-to-back Critics' Choice Awards. Cretton is working via his overall deal with Marvel Studios, signed late last year in the glow of Shang-Chi's success. The two will also act as co-creators for the series.   Wonder Man is one of Marvel's oldest characters, first introduced in 1964 in the pages of Avengers No 9. He was initially a villain and only appeared sporadically in the early Marvel Age, but was reconceived as a hero (and Avenger) in the late 1970s.   In the 1980s, the character really came into his own. Known as Simon Williams, he was a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers and, with a look that included a turtleneck, a red jacket and sunglasses, became a celebrity thanks to his day job as an actor and stuntman.   OUTRO AND BONUS AUDIO [49:46]   We would love to hear back from you! Hi gay! Happy Pride month! It would be homophobic of us to not release something, wouldn't it? We're back like an elephant with a vengeance! In this episode we talk about our recent New York City trip, EDC and the new movie Fire Island! Why did we end up having an argument in Vegas? What kind of sticky situations did Lee find his hands full of in a Vegas hotel room surrounded by gaysians?.... And why is Nuri now coming out as a home of phobe? And to wrap it all up, we talk about the new movie Fire Island (featuring Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang, directed by Andrew Ahn), as well as some parallels to our recent Vegas trip— such as social hierarchy, the desire to fit in, as well as the need for validation. Please watch the movie! It's so significant to have a film released that's written by, directed by, and starring gaysians. It's kinda like the Crazy Rich Asians of our community, except they both end up fucking white men at the end. (Which... I guess does happen.) If you've watched it, let us know which one of us is more Bowen(Howie) and who is more Joel(Noah)! Thank you for the support and it was nice seeing everyone at EDC who came up to us! We hopefully plan on doing shorter but more frequent episodes! Bye gay!

Scripture treats Wealth and Riches as a blessing, but it always comes with a warning. "The love of money is the roots of all kinds of evil", and so wealth should always be handled as a blessing used to bless others. On this week's episode we discuss how to help our children avoid the trap of loving wealth by talking about the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians (available on HBO Max). On the Family Movie Night Podcast we want to help your family have better conversations around the content you consume. We encourage every family at Community Christian Church to have a monthly movie night, to help you and your children build memories and start conversations that matter. We want to not only recommend some movies you could watch on your monthly movie night, but give you some ideas of meaningful conversations you could have with your children during or after the movie. We're back, baby! And I thought I'd open this new season with a bona fide SUPERHERO. Because that's just how we roll.My guest today is Simu Liu - the first Asian superhero in the Marvel cinematic universe and the star of the 2019 movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He also appeared in season 4 of Selling Sunset, where Chrishell tried to sell him a house (arguably the real achievement, amirite?). Simu was born in China. His parents were products of Mao's Cultural Revolution and ended up emigrating to Canada. Simu was raised by his grandparents for the first four years of his life before being taken to Canada, where he couldn't speak the language. It was an early lesson in resilience - one he would never forget.Simu joins me to talk about this, as well as his failed accountancy career, a formative heartbreak and failing to get a part in Crazy Rich Asians. Along the way we discuss 'the white gaze' and marginalisation in Hollywood, the dark days of his adolescence when he rebelled against his parents restrictive (and sometimes abusive) behaviour and...well, menstruation. Plus: how he's still friends with Chrishell and what it's like filming Greta Gerwig's Barbie.I adored our conversation because Simu came so willing to own every single one of his failures. His experience of heartbreak from a straight, male perspective was fascinating to me. And he's so smart I could just listen to him for days.--Simu's memoir, We Were Dreamers, is published next week! When Oscar®-nominated, Emmy® award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay teams with some of cinema's most noted directors in the new HBO Max original docuseries One Perfect Shot, movie lovers will see dazzling, unprecedented views inside memorable shots from film history. The series provides a never-before-possible perspective on filmmaking, allowing directors to step into their favorite shots and take viewers on amazing 360º views of their visions. DuVernay and her production company, ARRAY Filmworks, selected CBS VFX (www.CBS-VFX.com) to produce these visually breathtaking moments. Created for television by DuVernay and inspired by a popular Twitter account of the same name, each episode of One Perfect Shot arms one acclaimed director with an arsenal of visual tools to pull back the curtain on their most iconic shots. Filmmakers share their obstacles, challenges, lessons and triumphs as they detail the road to their one perfect shot. The series features prolific filmmakers Patty Jenkins, Aaron Sorkin, Kasi Lemmons, Jon M. Chu, Malcolm D. Lee and Michael Mann, as well as blockbuster films including Wonder Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Harriet, Crazy Rich Asians, Girls Trip and Heat. Making the incredible images in One Perfect Shot required CBS VFX to use more than 25 years of visual effects innovation. Much of the work integrates the visual effects company's proprietary Parallax virtual production system, which brings three-dimensional technology and an intricate level of detail to virtual locations. Combining Parallax with new tools in the Unreal Engine from Epic Games – including real-time rendering and ray tracing – led to remarkable production flexibility. The digital production techniques from CBS VFX incorporated into One Perfect Shot represent an evolution of the work the visual-effects studio has done to replicate real-world locations in virtual sets and improve virtual production – which has been particularly important during the challenges of the pandemic. CBS VFX has developed groundbreaking technology and created visual effects for multiple series across many networks, including Apple TV's upcoming Roar, The Offer for Paramount+, This Is Us on NBC, Netflix's Dead to Me, and Big Shot on Disney+. CBS VFX maintains a dedicated virtual production soundstage, and its team is available to television production professionals for live demonstrations of virtual production, digital set extension and realtime pre-viz technologies. In this Episode, Allan McKay interviews Craig Weiss, Executive Creative Director at CBS VFX and Jim Berndt, Head Virtual Production at CBS VFX about their work on One Perfect Shot created for HBO Max by Ava DuVernay, the creative process and challenges of short deadlines, the promise of virtual production and realtime — and the future of VR; as well as their work on some technologically innovative projects.
