Situationships is a podcast where Black millennials swap dating and relationship stories with host, Randi. As a perpetually single 30-year-old Black woman, Randi is on a quest to uncover insight and advice for dating as a Black millennial in today’s world of Tinder, texting, and situationships. Ea…
Black folks often have an intimate yet complicated relationship with our hair. From sitting through burning relaxers trying to get bone straight hair, to learning to rock a TWA because you just couldn’t wait any longer to go natural, to slathering on castor oil and praying your hair edges come back -- we have endless experiences with our hair. Some experiences are empowering, others may be painful. We also understand that society has a lot to say about our hair. Navigating the expectations that workplaces and relationships often place on our hair becomes a regular part of our lives. But through it all, we find ways to try to love our hair and pass along the hair and life lessons we’ve learned along the way. Textured Tales is a podcast that shares stories about Black hair and our relationship to it. Creator & Host: Randi Williams
On this week’s episode, I talk with Corey from the podcast Brunch with the Bros (@_brunchwiththebros). Corey drops hella gems as he shares about his 7-year on-again-off-again relationship with his ex. He talks about the unrealistic expectations his ex had of their relationship based on what she saw on social media. Their inability to meet her #relationshipgoals led her to explore options with other men. In the Do Better Corner, we talk about whether or not ghosting is "petty". On this week’s episode, I talk with Saneeta — a 34-year-old woman living in New York City who’s taking an indefinite break from dating. She’s met her fair share of duds and instead of being up front when she’s ready to move on, Saneeta tends to keep her feelings to herself and let things drag on much longer than she’d really like to. As a result, when Hawi started dating, she hadn’t yet learned how to effectively communicate her wants and needs. She developed a bad habit of threatening to or actually breaking up with men she was dating whenever she didn’t get her way. This week I had a conversation with my friend who shared some of the lessons he thought he learned, but ended up repeated in later relationships. I think a lot of us are familiar with rushing into a relationship, being overcome with the rush of emotion that comes with falling for someone, and not necessarily learning our lesson the first time around, so I’m sure you’ll be able to relate to some, if not all, of Justin’s experience. Justin mentions a few tools he’s learned through couples counseling that I know I want to use in my love life going forward. I’ll link to the references in the show notes so you can get the wisdom as well. More information about some of the tools we talk about on this episode can be found below. This week I have something a little different for y’all. I’ve turned the mic on myself and shared about a recent experience I had that allowed me to see the power I hold when it comes to dating and dealing with potential romantic partners and it provided me the opportunity to practice exercising that power. I’m hoping to do more of these dating diaries as I continue to live, learn, love, and grow so I can share my lessons and perspective with you so that hopefully you feel less alone in what you’re going through or what you’ve gone through and potentially help you avoid the pitfalls of situationships. She talks about the red flags that she saw, but chose to overlook, as the situationship developed. Alishia also drops some gems with her ‘3 E’s to Boundary Setting’. It’s genius, y’all. We also reference Myleik several times… and if you know Myleik, you know it was real wisdom we were commenting on. This is part 4 of the Millennial Dating Series. If you haven’t heard already, I interviewed young black professionals to get their take on aspects of modern dating. I asked them about their perspective on things like ghosting, paying for dates, using dating apps, and the joys and challenges of modern-day dating. On this episode, we hear from Ebony, a Baltimore native with two Masters degrees, who’s been in not one or two but SEVEN weddings and has been a maid of honor 3 times (I don’t even have that many friends, y’all…) She talks about her experience watching millennial relationships build and devolve, as well as her experience trying her luck (mostly unsuccessfully) on a range of dating apps. This is part 2 of the Millennial Dating Series. On this episode, we hear from Akil, a chemist and teacher out of Minneapolis. Akil shares some really thoughtful perspectives on dating and relationships for black millennials. And considering I’ve known Akil for almost 8 years and have seen his tomfoolery over that almost decade, his perspective really has come from a lot of maturing, learning from others, and self-reflection. I really think you’ll enjoy this interview. Enjoy! If you liked this episode, please leave a 5-star rating and review on Apple Podcast. I ask them about their perspective on things like ghosting, paying for dates, using dating apps, and the joys and challenges of modern-day dating. On this episode, we hear from Justin Casselle, the Director of ‘The Right Swipe’ a dope new web series created by and starring Kyra Jones and Juli Del Prete. ‘The Right Swipe’ puts a modern spin on the traditional rom-com by highlighting the dating experiences of individuals from marginalized communities. I’m excited to bring you an episode with CEO, screenwriter, bestselling, award-nominated author, and a public speaker, Phoenix Williams. You may be familiar with her erotic romance series, Sex, Lies, and Friendship, or her paranormal series, Queens of Beasts. Phoenix credits her success to standing in her truth, obsessing over anime, owning who she is, and giving her fears the bird. In her own words, she writes books and talks shit -- which you know I love and had to have her on the show. On this episode, Phoenix shares a story from her early twenties when she was dating someone seriously and found out in the worst way possible that he had moved on. Phoenix drops allllll the gems on this episode and shares her unabashed truth that got her to the place of growth and maturity that she’s in now. Enjoy! I think most of us are familiar with the idea of people in their teens and earlier twenties exploring their sexuality and decided what their sexual orientation will be. But for some, this is a much longer process. And on this episode, you’ll hear a story of a woman figuring out in her late twenties that she was a lesbian. After years of things not feeling quite right with me, she did some self-exploration to figure who she was and what she wanted. We talk about exploring ethically, red flags early on in dating, and what ‘Linder’ -- Lady Tinder -- is like. Courtney’s maturity really shines through on this episode and I know I learned a lot talking with her. Enjoy! If you liked this episode, please leave a 5-star rating and review on Apple Podcast.
