Mary and Andrew begin this week by addressing the Department of Justice dropping the subpoenas they ordered against New York Times journalists who reported on security concerns regarding President Trump's new Qatari-government-gifted Air Force One jet, noting that the attempt to subpoena the writers speaks to a failed effort of “chilling and intimidating” other reporters. But still, there were even more subpoenas: last week, the DOJ filed subpoenas for 14 major law firms as part of an ongoing lawsuit between the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Executive Office of the President, which Mary and Andrew believe is an effort by the government to try and “get the law firms to pressure the ABA to drop this lawsuit.” They also touch on an update to journalist Katie Phang's lawsuit against the federal government over Epstein files redactions and address Jack Smith's criminal referral by House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan. The accountability trail is the story. The FBI investigation that would normally follow a fatal shooting by federal officers was reportedly halted. The federal government withheld its evidence for seven months, turning it over to Hennepin County only in the days before Todd Blanche's confirmation hearing. Roughly 75 percent of the Minneapolis US Attorney's office resigned during this period, and more than half the prosecutions brought against protesters have since collapsed. Hawk offers his own reading of the Pretti footage, noting Pretti was legally carrying, and argues the sequence suggests an accidental discharge during the disarm. He stresses these remain uncharged allegations. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty now has the federal evidence, and Hawk expects charging decisions within six to eight months. Today's Headlines: Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami by US Marshals at the UK's request, facing 59 total charges including rape, sex trafficking, assault, and charges related to indecent images of a child — their attorney says they're innocent, they'll fight extradition. On the corruption beat, Trump is now selling hedge funds early access to his Truth Social posts for $100,000 a month through a service called Truth API, which is institutionalized insider trading dressed up as a subscription service — and he owns 41% of the company selling it, so that's clean. Meanwhile, Trump's primetime election fraud document dump turned out to contain zero evidence of Chinese meddling or a deep state coverup, but did confirm that Russia was pushing the exact same Biden corruption narratives Trump was pushing in 2020 — which is not the smoking gun he was looking for. A few hours earlier, Stephen Miller gave a much quieter speech at the State Department that was far more alarming. While Trump ranted about voter fraud, voting machines, China, mail ballots and election “security,” Miller laid out a federal counterterrorism strategy aimed directly at the political left.In this episode, Robin breaks down both speeches, what NSPM-7 actually does, and why the administration's plan for the 2026 midterms goes far beyond campaign messaging. The language is already in place: disrupt, identify, defund, debank, arrest and prosecute.Trump's address got the live blogs, cable coverage and instant fact-checks. He repeated unsupported claims about noncitizen voters, Chinese interference, stolen voter data and compromised election machines. He also announced plans to involve federal agencies in state election systems, remove people from voter rolls and investigate officials tied to the alleged fraud.But while everyone was watching Trump, Stephen Miller was explaining what comes next.Speaking to foreign security officials at a State Department ministerial, Miller described the political left as a terrorism threat and defended NSPM-7, a national security directive that gives federal agencies a broad mandate to target organizations, activists and financial networks.And the scope does not stop with people accused of violence. It can reach donors, organizers, lawyers, bail funds, nonprofits and anyone the administration decides is supporting the wrong movement.The speech also went somewhere even darker. Miller attacked civil liberties, complained about juries refusing to convict people accused of assaulting ICE agents, and told the room that leftists do not look “normal” because their appearance reflects what is supposedly inside them.That language is not random. They break down what Jared calls one of the most consequential and openly authoritarian speeches an American president has ever given, delivered by a man who can barely read the Stephen Miller script in front of him. The speech claimed China compromised over 200 million voter profiles, that a deep state hid it all from Trump, that Barack Obama personally handled burn bags full of evidence, and that 280,000 noncitizens are on the voter rolls, with WhiteHouse.gov supposedly holding the proof. Nick actually went and checked. The site was down, and when it loaded there was not a single document. The pair walk through why none of this is really about 2020, and everything about building a permission structure to rig the 2026 midterms and beyond, how intelligence agencies purged of anyone competent now feed Trump whatever he wants to hear, and why the echoes of Iraq War cherry-picking should worry everyone. It closes on the media trap where even networks that refused to air the speech will now repeat its claims for months. What we're watching: Nick is working through A History of Violence, the Cronenberg film written by friend of the pod Josh Olson, and enjoying the Viggo Mortensen slow-burn. Jared put on the newish Superman and found it a case study in how wall-to-wall James Gunn quipping drains every scene of tension, though Lois Lane comes out looking great.

Then come the numbers. A Center for Strategic and International Studies report covering 1994 through 2020 found that right-wing extremists carried out the large majority of domestic terrorist attacks and plots in the United States, roughly two-thirds in 2019 and over 90 percent in early 2020, and were responsible for 335 of 357 domestic terror deaths across that period, about 93 percent. None of that appears in Miller's speech. Hawk's argument is that "political terrorist" here functions as a label for anyone who disagrees with Donald Trump, not a description of violence. He points to Republicans controlling the House, Senate, White House, and Supreme Court as evidence against the radical-left-domination framing, and asks basic questions about an organization no one can locate.
