5 Feet — that’s the altitude Roadrunner held on a self-appointed decoy mission in Vietnam, and it’s the heart of Episode 227. It’s also the reason he walked away with a Bronze Star. This week, RePete and Fig welcome Chuck Howard, callsign Roadrunner. He flew with the 175th Assault Helicopter Company, earning two Bronze Stars and 25 Air Medals for valor. Roadrunner’s path started on a Jersey City hammock, watching jets land at Newark. Actually, he almost became a commercial artist before the Army got him first. He walks us through flight school and a co-pilot who froze on short final. Then there’s the Cessna climb to twelve thousand feet that ate an entire afternoon. Consequently, we get one of the funniest bike-to-the-airport stories in show history. [Set the following as an actual Heading 2 block, not bold text:] I Never Exceeded 5 Feet: The Decoy Mission The Bronze Star story is the centerpiece. Roadrunner grew tired of rules of engagement that only let him fire after getting shot at first. So he built his own workaround. He stripped down a demilitarized Huey and lit it up like a Christmas tree. Then he flew it straight at the tree line at night. He hovered along the perimeter at an altitude he never exceeded, five feet, daring Charlie to take the bait. However, the story doesn’t stop there. Roadrunner later flew Port Authority helicopters and was first on scene for Sully’s Hudson River landing. He also worked the water recovery after TWA 800, marking wreckage while FBI agents jumped aboard his aircraft mid-hover. Furthermore, he shares two separate tail rotor failures. In one, he saved a multi-million dollar helicopter by nursing it into a drainage ditch. His book, Tales from the Cockpit, covers even more of this. This episode is also brought to you by DC Artworks. When did flying stop being the most glamorous thing a person could possibly do?What kind of industry fixes its own prices by law, and then competes on how much champagne it can pour? And what happened to the man who broke it?Sir Freddie Laker swept floors at an aircraft factory, worked out that the entire airline business was upside down, and got taken apart for it — Peter Frankopan and Afua Hirsch on the man whose bankruptcy made your budget flight possible. For most of the twentieth century the airlines ran a legal cartel. IATA fixed the fares, so a London to New York ticket cost the same on Pan Am, TWA or BA, and the only thing left to compete on was luxury: forty inches of legroom, professional chefs, sterling silver, a side of beef carved in the aisle. It was magnificent, and roughly eighty-five per cent of people never got on a plane. Then Laker put a transatlantic seat on sale for fifty-nine pounds and let people queue on the pavement outside Victoria for it. The industry drove him under inside five years, then adopted everything he had done. What is left is a world where five billion people fly each year, three per cent of them internationally, and the seat in front of you gets a little closer every season.Join Legacy Plus for bonus episodes, early access, Q&A's, fewer adverts and more.legacy.supportingcast.fm[0:00] Peter hates airports, Afua loves them, and the words "you're a Terminal Five girl"[5:19] The legal cartel — how IATA fixed every fare and left nothing to compete on but champagne[6:39] Forty inches of legroom, a chef, and a side of beef carved at your seat[8:13] Nail polish, posture, and the finishing-school standards applied to an air hostess[11:36] Freddie Laker, the Canterbury boy who swept factory floors and broke the cartel[13:23] Fifty-nine pounds to New York, and people sleeping on the pavement outside Victoria[21:57] Four per cent of climate change, and the cities buckling under weekend visitors[30:57] Why business class keeps improving while your seat keeps getting thinnerStay connected with Legacy:Instagram: @originallegacypodcastTikTok: @legacy_productionsExplore more from Peter and Afua — essays, sources, and ideas:Substack: peterfrankopan.substack.com | afuahirsch.substack.comJoin Legacy+ for bonus episodes, early access, Q&A's, fewer adverts and more.legacy.supportingcast.fmStay connected with Legacy:Instagram: @originallegacypodcastTikTok: @legacy_productionsExplore more from Peter and Afua — essays, sources, and ideas: Substack: peterfrankopan.substack.com | afuahirsch.substack.com Hosted on Acast. Thirty years ago this month, hundreds of eyewitnesses on Long Island saw TWA flight 800 shot out of the sky, and the official response was not only a unbelievable, but a CIA cartoon that demonstrated the laws of physics and aerodynamics are subject to distortion when there is an agenda to push. Even George Floyd was a lie, just like the Charlie Kirk shooter patsy. Even the biggest landslide in history only stemmed the tide briefly. And, still, “Their Lips Have NEVER STOPPED Moving!” Why? The Texas Wildlife Association (TWA) Larry records this episode from the JW Marriott in San Antonio during the 41st annual Texas Wildlife Association convention. He shares the founding story of the TWA from 1985, which began after he received a call from David Palmer, an assistant director of law enforcement. Larry, along with Gary Machen and Murphy Ray, initially met in a broom closet (room 232) in Austin before moving to Jim's Restaurant to draft a list of 50 key landowners. Today, the organization's youth hunting program has introduced nearly 100,000 children to hunting. In 2025 alone, their legacy programs provided wildlife education to 1.2 million school children. Larry promotes the upcoming DSC Summer Expo, taking place July 23-26 at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas, featuring over 400 booths. The DSC Foundation Gala will be held on the evening of July 25th to raise funds for wildlife conservation and education. The gala will feature the presentation of the Legacy Award to Steve Hornady. Larry is auctioning off two personal items at the gala: a custom laser-engraved Savage Model 99 and his heavily traveled signature brown hat. He notes that the DSC Foundation recently distributed $1.2 million in grants to highly vetted conservation projects. Larry, approaching 80 years old, outlines his philosophy on wildlife management, distinguishing between conservation and preservation. He defines conservation as a practice that promotes life and carefully considers the habitat for all species. Conversely, he views preservation as having "tunnel vision" that ignores how protecting one specific species impacts the broader ecosystem. In a humorous critique of predator reintroduction advocates, he suggests that grizzly bears should be released into major California cities like Los Angeles and Sacramento so their supporters can live alongside them. Larry is expanding his digital footprint by releasing new 10-to-30-minute bonus video podcasts filmed directly from the field. These new video podcasts will be available on YouTube and CarbonTV. He also invites listeners to follow his new TikTok channel, @LWsWhitetails, where he shares periodic short hunting stories. He continues to co-host "A Sportsman's Life" with Jeff Rice and Luke Clayton, as well as his ongoing audio podcast work. Texas Wildlife Association (TWA) Recap Larry dedicates a significant portion of the episode to the history, founding, and impact of the Texas Wildlife Association: Recent Event: Larry recently returned from the 41st anniversary TWA convention, which was held at the JW Marriott in San Antonio. Founding History: TWA was established back in 1985. Larry started the organization alongside his friends Murphy Ray and Gary Machen. The Catalyst: The group was formed after David Palmer, an assistant director of law enforcement, warned them about proposed Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) changes that would adversely affect private landowners. Land Ownership: The founders recognized a critical need to protect landowner rights because 95% to 99% of Texas land is privately owned. The "Broom Closet" Meeting: Initially, TPWD officials dismissed their concerns. The officials sent them to meet in Room 232, which turned out to be a broom closet. Official Formation: In response to being dismissed, they called a meeting at the Y.O. Hilton in Kerrville. Out of 50 people invited, 49 attended to form the "Wildlife Association of Texas" (later TWA). McLean Bowman was elected as the organization's first president. Conservation Impact: TWA has driven successful conservation initiatives, including the Texas Big Game Awards program. They also created the Texas Youth Hunting organization, which has introduced roughly 50,000 children to hunting. Auction Items: During the recent convention's auction, Larry sold one of his Savage Model 99 rifles and a brown western hat. Larry also outlines the history of DSC and details several upcoming events for the organization: DSC History: Larry explains that the Dallas Safari Club split from Safari Club International (SCI) around 1982. Summer Expo Location: Due to space limitations at the K Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, the expo previously moved to Atlanta and will eventually move to Houston. However, this year's summer show is being hosted at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas. Event Dates: The DSC Summer Expo will take place on July 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th. DSC Foundation Gala: The gala is scheduled for the Saturday night of the expo, July 25th. Awards: The DSC Legacy Award is going to Steve Hornady. Additionally, Dr. Mike Arnold is being recognized as the DSC Foundation Educator of the Year. Leadership: Larry highlights the work of Russell Stacy, Mary Edith, and Kaylee. He directs listeners to DSCF.org for more information. Bonus Content: Larry announces a new bonus video podcast that will focus on real-world field content. Auctions: He also mentions online hunting auctions as an additional platform for listeners to engage with. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

She was also up at 3:30am, finishing at 7:30pm, stress rash on her hands, $9k a month against $4k rent. Today her Central Coast CrossFit box, TWA, is at $41k a month. But this one isn't about the revenue. Sophie and I take Abbey somewhere most growth stories skip: what happens to who you are when the business finally works without you. She hit $41k and the ground got shaky, not because the numbers were bad, but because her whole identity was welded to the work. We call it the 40k fuckery. It's an upper-limit problem, and it stalls owners right when they should be flying. In this episode you'll hear: The three moves that took TWA from $9k to $41k a month (and why none were "work harder") Why hours and effort stop equalling growth, and what to focus on instead How Abbey made sales her superpower, then handed it off to her first hire The identity trap that hits studio owners the moment the business starts working How to separate who you are from what you built, so scaling doesn't feel like a crisis If this one landed, go back and listen to Indi's story next.

When JFK asked Dwight Eisenhower why the Normandy invasion was a success, Eisenhower replied, "Because we had better meteorologists than the Germans." That's the crux of the new WWII historical drama, "Pressure." In this taut movie, Andrew Scott plays a brilliant British meteorologist who butted heads with Eisenhower, played by Brendan Fraser, over the timing of the D-Day invasion. “Pressure” is an involving look at the herculean behind-the-scenes efforts of unsung heroes. Can the popularity of standup comic Nate Bargatze translate to the big screen? If the juvenile family comedy "The Breadwinner" is any indication, the answer is...we'll see. Bargatze takes on a Mr. Mom-type role as an inept dad left temporarily in care of the household. There are more laughs in five minutes of Bargatze's standup routines than in this entire movie. The new thriller "Tuner" is gimmicky, but the gimmicks work. Leo Woodall plays Niki, a piano tuner with super-sensitive hearing. Criminals figure out how to manipulate Niki into using his talents to crack safes. Well-acted, smart and involving, "Tuner" is a surprisingly gripping sleeper. The Apple TV movie "Propeller One-Way Night Coach" marks the directorial debut of actor and aviation enthusiast John Travolta. The story is based on a children's book Travolta wrote in 1997 about a young boy on his first airplane trip from New York to Hollywood on a TWA Constellation in the 1960s. The film was partially shot in KC as the actual Connie is, of course, housed in KC alongside the TWA museum. The lightweight story tends to drift off into the ether, but it's a harmless bit of travel nostalgia.

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we are joined by Admiral William O. Studeman, United States Navy, retired, and his wife Diane, former Pan Am stewardess and one of the most gracious ambassadors the airline ever had.Their connection to Pan Am runs deeper than most. Diane grew up in Milford-on-Sea in Hampshire, England. The navy and aviation were not just a backdrop to her childhood but its very fabric. She joined Pan Am as a stewardess in the early 1960s, at what many would argue was the cultural apex of the Jet Age, when the uniform was a statement and the Clipper was a promise of something larger than the ordinary.Bill is, in the truest sense, a Pan Am kid. His father, Oliver J. Studeman, joined Pan Am's Western Division at Brownsville, Texas in 1933, flying mail-carrying tri-motored Fokkers from Texas through Mexico to Panama and across the north coast of South America. He was known professionally as O.J. and had the nickname of "Stude" by his friends and colleagues. Over four decades, O.J. rose from Chief Pilot of the Western Division to Operations Manager of the Alaska, Pacific, and Latin American divisions, to Assistant Vice President of Pan Am's Guided Missile Range Division at Cape Canaveral, to Vice President of the Metropolitan Air Facilities Division at Teterboro, New Jersey, where he retired in 1972. His uncle, on his mother's side, also worked for the airline. Bill was born in Brownsville in January 1940. Pan Am, for him, was not just a company. It was a family inheritance.Bill and Diane met in the summer of 1962 at London's Heathrow Airport, where Bill was working the Pan Am ticket counter and Diane was working the TWA desk. She joined Pan Am shortly after. He entered Officer Candidate School in 1963 and spent the next 32 years in the United States Navy as a naval intelligence officer. At his Senate confirmation hearing, Senator Frank Murkowski said Bill had "mastered, as few others have, the intricate and arcane world of signals intelligence." He served as Director of Naval Intelligence, Director of the National Security Agency, and Deputy Director of Central at CIA, twice serving as its acting director of the agency across two presidential administrations. Diane hung up her wings to become a Navy wife and mother. They settled eventually in Annapolis. Before the interview, this episode explores three places that rarely appear in the standard Pan Am narrative: Brownsville, Texas, where the airline learned to fly in the clouds and where O.J. "Stude" Studeman first fell in love with the sky; Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, the man-made island built to launch the Boeing B-314 Flying Boats toward Asia, whose art deco terminal still stands today; and Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, the oldest operating commercial airport in the New York metropolitan area, and the place where O.J. Studeman's remarkable Pan Am career came to a close.Bill and Diane's son, Rear Admiral Mike Studeman (ret.), recently published a book on leadership called Might of the Chain: Forging Leaders of Iron Integrity now available in bookstores and as an audiobook. This is Episode 65 of The Pan Am Podcast, and the final full episode with Tom Betti as host in the history and humanities format that has defined this program since its first season. Ryszard Zadow, known also as Richard to many, was interested in flying from birth. Fanned by aviation stories retold by his parents and watching crop dusters deftly maneuver above the orange groves, in his childhood home state of Texas, Ryszard continues to pursue his lifetime passion for flight.Ryszards mother and father supported his interest in aviation. He remembers one notable adventure in which his father brought him to a Confederate Air Force air show when the CAF was still based in Harlington, TX.When Ryszard was 15, a local celebrity named Al Cisneros, hometown hero and school alumni was visiting the students and signing autographs at St Joes (Go Bloodhounds). Encouraged by his mother to go speak with the decorated Vietnam War veteran and Blue Angel pilot. Al signed Ryszards program.Ryszard moved up through the cadet ranks in the Civil Air Patrol and persevered toward earning his pilot license by any means possible. He built time at Weiser Air Park and solo'd at the David Wing Hooks Airport in Houston in his late teens. He earned his private pilot license while attending University at Texas A&M where he helped found the A&M Skydivers club and personally flew jumpers. Ryszard joined the Army National Guard and earned a commission in January 1983 with the Navy. Among his many accomplished roles for the military, Ryszard flew as a Radar Intercept officer on F-14 Tomcats and eventually completed his career as an A-4 Adversary instructor. He left the Navy after Desert Storm in the early 1990's and accepted a position as a pilot for TWA and later Southwest Airlines. To his great delight, Ryszard one day found himself on the flight deck of a Southwest 737 flying with his childhood hero Al Cisneros! Ryszard remains close with Al to this day and describes him as an Uncle. Ryszards Canard experience goes back almost as long as his career. In 1983 Ryszard purchased the MILLETT VARI-EZE N930L. Many years later, he had the opportunity to purchase the Cozy Jet N722 "Kerosene Dreams" built by Greg Von Richter and flew it on a return to Oshkosh. These days he's slumming around in a Berkut N9041H named the Mississippi Queen.Ryszard's commitment to the Rutan canard community runs deep. In 2014 Ryszard established the 501c3 organization known as the Rutan Aircraft Flying Experience (pronounced "raa-fee" for short). In his own words, Ryszard: "founded RAFE to spread the word about the mission and tell the story of the dedication, the commitment and the spirit poured into the aircraft designed by Burt Rutan and built by the Owners."With primary bases of operation in Ellington, TX and Covington, TN, Ryzard recently retired from Southwest Airlines and now dedicates himself to the development of RAFE full time. He lives on a house-boat in Key-mah, TX, mostly because he wasn't able to find a suitable aircraft to live in, yet.Visit RAFE on the web!  https://www.rutanaircraftflyingexperience.org/

Also, an interview from the Singapore Airshow with a Product Development VP from Textron Aviation. Lockheed Starliner L-1649A flying in TWA colors. Guest Philip Kemp has been an Airline Transport Pilot for 17 years, and he has more than a little experience with the Lockheed Constellation. That connection came about in the 1980's after meeting Maurice Roundy, a Lockheed Constellation fan and collector of the airplane. Philip is one of the last pilots to have flown the L-1649A Starliner Constellation.  Philip describes the development of the Lockheed Constellation and its variants, and how the airliner was obsoleted by jet transports. He tells us about his adventures ferrying Connies, the remaining examples that still exist, and the sale of Maurice's Constellations, including an ultimately unsuccessful attempt by Lufthansa to make one of the aircraft flightworthy. Philip explains that N8083H is now at the TWA Hotel at JFK after a cosmetic restoration, N974R is with Kermit Weeks also for a cosmetic restoration, and that N7316C was shipped to Hamburg for the 100th Lufthansa anniversary. Philip started his career with Continental Express, and then he flew Part 135 jet charter with Charter Ops for two years. He returned to the airlines with SkyWest, then back to Continental Express (ExpressJet). Philip spent nine years with North American Airlines flying troops all over the world, and his last six years were with JetBlue. He was the Manager of Crew Training at Waltzing Matilda Aviation/Connect Airlines, a new Part 121 airline, flying Dash 8 Q400's. Aviation News After DCA crash, Congress acts to mandate decades-old aircraft tracking tech Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is an aviation system that uses GPS to determine aircraft position and also provides other flight information. ADS-B has two functions: ADS-B In and ADS-B Out. ADS-B Out broadcasts position and other identifying information, and has been required for many aircraft in the U.S. since 2020. ADS-B In receives transmissions from other aircraft and from ground stations. The bi-partisan Rotorcraft Operations Transparency and Oversight Reform (ROTOR) Act (S.2503) would require ADS-B out aircraft to have ADS-B In to display information about nearby traffic in the cockpit. The ROTOR Act was unanimously passed by the Senate in December 2025, and at the time of recording, a vote in the House was scheduled. House to vote Monday on ROTOR Act following deadly midair collision After recording, the House voted on the bill, but it did not pass due to insufficient votes. Under the ROTOR Act: FAA must issue final rules for ADS‑B In equipage not later than 2 years after enactment, effective within 60 days of publication. The final rule has a fleet-wide compliance deadline of December 31, 2031, for affected aircraft, with at most a 1‑year extension for certain operators. FAA must start regular briefings and public reports on the rulemaking status within 180 days after enactment and then every 90 days. The value of airplane deliveries for 2025 was $31.0 billion, an increase of 16.1%. Helicopter shipments in 2025 compared to 2024: Piston helicopters were down 2% Turbine helicopters down 2% (preliminary) The preliminary value of helicopter deliveries for 2025 was $4.7 billion, an increase of approximately 5.5%. Homeland security reverses course on TSA PreCheck suspension Citing staffing shortages caused by the partial government shutdown, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially suspended the TSA PreCheck and Global Entry airport security programs. Soon thereafter, DHS revised the directive in a social media post saying, “TSA PreCheck remains operational with no change for the traveling public. As staffing constraints arise, TSA will evaluate on a case-by-case basis and adjust operations accordingly.” Chris Sununu, president and CEO of the trade association Airlines for America, said in a statement that the group “is deeply concerned that TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs are being suspended and that the traveling public will be, once again, used as a political football amid another government shutdown”. Geoff Freeman, head of the US Travel Association, accused Democratic and Republican lawmakers of putting politics first. “Air travel is essential for our economy and daily life, and it's disgraceful for travel to be used as leverage in political disagreements,” he said in a statement. No Expense Has Been Spared’: Inside a Luxury Jet DHS Wants to Buy for Deportations DHS has been leasing a Boeing 737 Max 8 featuring bedrooms, showers, a kitchen, four large flat-screen TVs, and a bar. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is asking the OMB to approve its purchase of the jet for $70 million. ICE says that it would be used for deportations and travel for Cabinet officials. A DHS spokesperson said, “at least one of the bedrooms is currently being converted for seating to prepare the aircraft to meet the demands of its deportation mission set.” In a statement, a DHS spokesperson said, “This plane flies at 40% cheaper than what the military aircraft flies for ICE deportation flights—saving the American taxpayer hundreds of millions of dollars. This is part of Secretary Noem's broader efforts to clamp down on inefficiencies and save taxpayer dollars.” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem Spends $200 Million of Taxpayer Money on Pair of Gulfstream G700 Private Jets During Government Shutdown House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) and Homeland Security Subcommittee Ranking Member Lauren Underwood (IL-14) requested more information from the Secretary regarding the purchase, which does not align with earlier funding requests for the Department. Send us a textPioneering airline pilot Lynn Rippelmeyer reflects on her extraordinary journey from being hired as a TWA stewardess in the early 1970s to becoming one of the first women to fly the Boeing 747, and later retiring from United Airlines after a career shaped both by deregulation, mergers, and furloughs, and by generosity, unexpected opportunities, and adventure. We talk about her two-part memoir, beginning with Life Takes Wings, which traces her path from the cabin to the flight deck at a time when women were told — explicitly — that they didn't belong there. Lynn shares unforgettable stories from the cockpit, including a laugh-out-loud reading involving a seeing-eye dog, Florida mud, and an entire airport watching it unfold. In Life Takes Flight, the adventures continue as she pursues her flying career, takes a break to raise a family, and then returns to flying as a single mom. This episode also explores:The transition from “stewardess” to “flight attendant” and what that shift meant culturallyBeing told women couldn't fly “the heavies” — and proving otherwiseThe mentors (and gatekeepers) who shaped her careerHow discovering the WASP later in life reframed everything she'd been toldWhy writing her story became a responsibility, not just a creative actHow her flying career ultimately led to humanitarian work in Honduras and the founding of a nonprofitLynn's story sits at the intersection of aviation, feminism, labor history, and storytelling — and it's one every aspiring aviator (and writer) should hear.Buy the books directly from Lynn to support her non-profit Roatan Support Effort. https://lynnrippelmeyer.com/purchase-nowDid you know you can support your local independent bookshop and me by shopping through my Bookshop.org affiliate links on my website? E649 - Roger Chiocchi - From Advertising Executive to Author, The Brushy Ridge Militia - Parents Take Gun Control Into Their Own HandsAbout the authorEclectic is a word that aptly defines Roger Chiocchi. Constantly questioning, How does it work?, Chiocchi graduated from Ithaca College and then the Wharton School (MBA) with distinction. He then rose through the ranks at mega-agency, Young & Rubicam, to Senior VP where he ran the advertising campaigns for Advil, TWA, AT&T, Sears (the “Softer Side of Sears” campaign), among others. He then went on to eventually become President of Y&R subsidiary, The Lord Group, where he helped transition NYNEX to Bell Atlantic then to Verizon, while bringing in new accounts like The Sports Authority, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, and HIP Health Plans.Chiocchi regards himself as a perpetual student, constantly scouring YouTube for lectures on astrophysics, quantum mechanics and human consciousness and whatever else suits his fancy next. But why not? His appetite for knowledge is eclectic. How a School Shooting Turned Suburban Parents into Federal Criminals.Book: The Brushy Ridge Militia is about how the intersection of grief and helplessness leads a group of parents to become so enraged after a mass shooting to conclude that enough's enough, compelling them to commit a major act of civil disobedience. After progressing through the many stages of grief, the parents of the deceased children of Brushy Ridge, Ohio High School lobby Congress to pass tighter gun control legislation. When they attempt to meet with conservative Speaker of the House, Fred Grantham, he refuses and walks right by, emotionless, as they stand outside his office, displaying pictures of their precious children. At that point, they conclude enough's enough.Upon return to their hometown, the parents feel like they've banged their heads against a wall. Why when over half of Americans want stricter gun laws, even after the tragedies of Sandy Hook, Columbine, Marjory Stoneman Douglas and, now, Brushy Ridge, why won't Congress budge?Hank Patrick, an attorney and father of one of the deceased students, tells them it's because of twenty-seven ambiguous words called the Second Amendment. While many gun advocates hide behind those words to protect their right to unfettered access to guns of all types, those words say nothing of the sort, Patrick explains. What they do say is that Americans have the right to form citizen militias to fight a government that has become tyrannical. They decide to be true to the words of the Second Amendment as originally intended and form a citizen's militia, The Brushy Ridge Militia, and scheme to take Speaker Fred Grantham hostage until he agrees to bring more reasonable gun legislation to the floor.By surreptitiously following Grantham's moves and cleverly evading the FBI, the parents intercept Grantham at an apartment building in DC and bring him to a spot in rural West Virginia where no radio transmissions are allowed. For four days, they force him to watch the security cam video of the shooting and morgue shots of their cherished children. Finally, he agrees, but shortly after, recants.https://www.facebook.com/RogerChiocchi/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Though he has not been glorified by the Church, Fr Lazarus was a pioneer and exemplar of Orthodoxy in the West.   He was born in England in 1902. In his early manhood he moved to western Canada, where he worked as a farm laborer for several years. While working in Alberta, he sensed a call to become a missionary and went to an English missionary college for five years.   Sad to say, our sources are unclear about how he came to the Orthodox faith from this unlikely beginning. But in 1934 he spent seven weeks on Mt Athos, then lived as a monk in Yugoslavia. He was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Theophan (Russian Orthodox Church Abroad), then sent to Palestine to serve the Russian Mission in Jerusalem.   In 1948, the new State of Israel gave the Mission's property to the Soviet Union and the mission was left dispossessed. Fr Lazarus served as priest to the Russian Convent in Aïn Karim and Transjordan, then was sent to India in 1952, where he helped in Orthodox missionary work for twenty years. Several of his books and translations, such as his biography/study of St Seraphim of Sarov, were written while he lived in India. While there, he met Mother Gavrilia of Greece, whose beautiful biography Ascetic of Love includes good descriptions of him during his life in India. Though very strict in his Orthodoxy, he was flexible in externals: in India he wore a white rather than a black cassock, because black clothing had offensive connotations to the Indian people.   In 1972 Fr Lazarus was called to Greece, then in 1974 to Australia, where he served for nine years. In 1983 he moved to California in answer to call from Fr Peter Gillquist to assist members of the former 'Evangelical Orthodox Church' in their move to Orthodoxy. In 1989 he moved to Alaska, where he continued this work. He reposed in Eagle River, Alaska in 1992. Following is an excerpt from an account of his last days by members of his community in Eagle River:   "Father always signed his name with TWA, "Traveling With Angels". A few days before his death, after battling cancer many years, faithfully using the Jesus Prayer as the medicine for his affliction, the Archangel Michael appeared to help him. His final journey homeward had begun, TWA... 'the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.' (2 Timothy 4: 6-8)."

Join us as Ocean House owner and award-winning author Deborah Goodrich Royce moderates a conversation with our featured author, Wilbur Ross, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce. About the Author: Wilbur L. Ross, Jr. served as Secretary of Commerce in the Trump administration following 55 years of experience in investment banking and private equity. In this capacity, he advised President Donald Trump on commercial and economic affairs and helped American entrepreneurs and businesses create jobs and economic opportunity. A native of North Bergen, New Jersey, Ross spent a significant portion of his business career at Rothschild, Inc. Ross negotiated on behalf of creditors in some of the highest-profile bankruptcy proceedings in history, including those involving Pan Am, TWA, Texaco, and Drexel Burnham Lambert. After founding his own private equity firm in 2000, Ross purchased and restored many companies to profitability, including those in the steel, coal, textile, and banking industries. Over the course of his career, Ross restructured more than $400 billion in assets, earning him a distinguished reputation on Wall Street. In 2011, Bloomberg Markets named him one of the 50 most influential people in global finance. Secretary Ross's philanthropic work has included significant support for the Japan Society, the Brookings Institution, the Blenheim Foundation, and numerous entities devoted to the fine arts, including the Rene Magritte Museum in Brussels. He was also a member of the advisory board of the Yale University School of Management. Secretary Ross is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Hilary Geary Ross, have four children. Before being named President Trump's Secretary of Commerce in 2017, Wilbur Ross had already earned a reputation as the “King of Bankruptcy” over his 55-year career on Wall Street. Often working on high-profile bankruptcies such as Pan Am and Texaco, Ross helped restructure more than $400 billion in assets, and was named among Bloomberg's 50 most influential people in global finance. After coming to Washington, Ross faced equally tough challenges, yet survived in his post for all four years. About The Book: Creating Success in Business and Life explains how Ross got to the top and stayed there. Rising from humble beginnings in North Bergen, New Jersey, Ross applied simple principles with strict discipline—something readers can apply in their own quest for success. Ultimately, Ross's strategies and dealmaking skills led to relationships with King Charles, Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn, the Rothschild family, Steve Wynn, Lakshmi Mittal, Mike Milken, and many other famous personalities. Ross also documents his experiences with President Trump in the Oval Office.  Whether you're interested in Ross' experiences as a neighbor of John Lennon in the legendary Dakota apartment building, celebrating with Sir Richard Branson on his private island, or his tumultuous time in Washington, you will find Risks and Returns to be a candid reflection of a life lived at the pinnacle of Wall Street, New York, and Palm Beach society, and the Trump administration. Above all, anyone driven to find career success will learn from Ross' life the strategies and mentality to achieve it.  Please find out more about Wilbur Ross and his book at www.risksandreturns.net.
