Don Niesen has lived in Central Wisconsin for about 25 years now. He describes Central Wisconsin as being a totally different world from where he grew up in Racine, Wisconsin. After moving to Central Wisconsin, he's had multiple encounters with various types of wildlife, but none of those encounters moved the needle for Don nearly as much as an encounter he had while he was driving to his parent's house, one evening. As he was driving down a rural section of highway, heading to their house, he was on the lookout for deer. Deer-related car crashes are a big problem in that area. All of a sudden, up ahead, he could see a large, black figure, on the side of the road, pulling at something in the ditch. At first, Don thought it was a bear. Then, it did something no bear could do and at that moment, Don's jaw dropped. When Bryce Edwards was growing up on his family's 642-acre farm, in Southern Illinois, his grandmother told him a story that made his jaw drop. She told him about the time when she saw what she called a Honey Bear come out of the woods, across the road from where she'd been sitting. She was sitting in her front yard, at the time, with Bryce's father and his brother when the Honey Bear came out of the woods. When she saw it, she grabbed Bryce's dad and his brother, ran inside with them, and hid in a closet until Bryce's grandfather came home from work. That happened 60 years ago. When tonight's first guest was growing up, she had a series of experiences that she didn't understand. That is, she didn't understand them until she came face to face with what had been behind those experiences. It was a Sasquatch. Her family thought the Sasquatch was Tara's imaginary friend, but when you her what that Sasquatch did, you might look at it as being more of a guardian angel. It saved her life, one day.Tonight's second guest had his Bigfoot sightings in Gulf County Florida. His first Sasquatch-related experience happened one night when he was 10 years old. He was snake hunting with his dad. While they were driving down a back road, he and his dad saw what they thought was a snake crawl, on the side of the road. They stopped, got out, and walked over to take a closer look and realized they were looking at a giant set of hominid footprints. When he had his next experience, it didn't involve seeing evidence. It involved a much more convincing experience. In February of 2000, tonight's guest, Anita Tallbl, was spending a night out with two friends of hers, Manny and Tess, when she had her first Sasquatch sighting. You see, when Anita had that first sighting, she was sitting in the back of Manny's car, with Tess, about 200 yards from Tess' property. To Anita's surprise, she saw two Sasquatch crossing the road in front of Manny's car. One of the Sasquatch was black and the other one was a brownish/red color. That experience took Anita from having a very mild interest in the Sasquatch phenomenon to being very interested in finding out all she could about them. In May of 2023, Crystal was sitting at a traffic light, near a well-known landmark in Pennsylvania, when she had a Sasquatch sighting. The landmark is called Horseshoe Curve. Horseshoe Curve is a winding series of curves, bridges, and tunnels that a railroad track winds through and over, near Altoona, Pennsylvania. Humans have a long history of partnerships with a variety of micro organisms. Although the proportions vary widely with individuals, recent scientific estimates suggest that a typical human being has approximately the same number of bacteria and other microbes as they do actual human cells. Now it appears that a partnership with yeast and algae will enable spacefaring humans to use their waste products to produce food and plastics during long duration space flights. Dr. Mark Blenner of Clemson University leads a research group developing strains of yeast which obtain their nitrogen from untreated urine and their carbon dioxide from exhaled breath or the Martian atmosphere which has been converted into yeast food by algae. One of Blenner's yeast strains produces omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for heart, eye, and brain health while another strain of yeast has been engineered to produce polyester polymers which could be used by 3D printers to produce plastic tools and other useful devices. In the future research Blenner's team will focus on increasing the output of these tiny beasts to the point that they will generate useful amounts of nutrients and plastics from astronaut's waste products. This new research when added to the fact that on the International Space Station space travelers now routinely drink recycled water from their urine, sweat, and showers moves us closer to the day when space travelers literally use and reuse every atom that they lift from the Earth's surface enabling journeys that may last for years. The flip side of our partnership with microorganisms is that it is extremely difficult to protect the worlds we explore from a microorganism invasion which would threaten their home grown biology.

While we refer to a few books in the discussion that follows, this discussion with my dear old friend Albert Lerman is primarily about his experience as an 18 year old infantryman in World War II. And when I say old friend, I really mean it. Albert turned 100 earlier this year and Albert's son Bill, a dear and old friend as well, suggested that it would be timely to have this discussion. Albert was a grunt in the Army, an infantryman, tough, resilient, essential,  the backbone of the army, and part of The Greatest Generation.Carol and I have known and loved Albert for more than 50 years, and he's exemplified The Greatest Generation his entire life.  I'm so pleased to have had this discussion with Albert and Bill.
