Miss Rebekah and Miss Ing from the Shaler North Hills Library reflect on a headline from the past week through wit, wisdom and song. If you are news junkie, a fan of literature, a library lover, a friend of the spotted owl, a devotee of asparagus, you have found the podcast you had previously known only in your dreams. If you enjoy their daily programs for children at the library or on facebook.com/shalerlibrary, this podcast is just for you. Why should the kids be the only ones subjected to such ridiculousness?
This week we take on some classic AND some stupid moral dilemmas! And in the book world, Rebekah recommends these: The Outsider Inside Out Winter Counts! Superman Smashes the Klan Ing recommends these: Isaiah Dunn is My Hero Convenience Store Woman Micromegas!
Rebekah and Ing take an online enneagram test to find out their types! We do not recommend doing this, except for fun, but we HIGHLY recommend learning more about the enneagram and studying it seriously with someone who knows about it! For those whose path is Christianity, they recommend the Center for Action and Contemplation and Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM.
Rebekah has a bad apple experience. Ing and Rebekah talk music, recycling and what they have been reading. Rebekah recommends Death of Vivek Oji, and both Rebekah and Ing recommend Pet, both by Akwaeke Emezi. They both recommend Black Brother, Black Brother and EVERYTHING by Jewell Parker Rhodes.
Rebekah is taking a well-deserved break from work and so Miss Ing thought it would be hilarious to talk about...um...yeah...death.
This week Rebekah and Ing answer all of the questions you never wanted to ask of them! OR ANYONE! Also they both highly recommend Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.
While this might not be the most stimulating of our podcasts, we didn't want to disappoint and not produce at all! Rebekah recommends the book Afterland by Lauren Beukes. Ing recommended Land of Shadows by Rachel Howzell Hall.
This week Rebekah and Ing talk about Justin Timberlake, "cancel culture" and the book Dare to Speak: Defending Free Speech for All by Suzanne Nossel and a book they both found to be so terrible, will not even provide a link for it.
Rebekah and Ing discuss "chick lit" and One to Watch. Rebekah recommends The Safe Place and Dear Sweet Pea. Ing highly recommends Accidental Trouble Magnet, the first in the Planet Omar series.
Rebekah and Ing reflect upon some of the issues that divide and unite us as citizens of the world. Rebekah recommends One to Watch and On the Come Up. Miss Ing just finished and loved The Shadows. Here is the picture mentioned in today's episode, the first documented "side eye."
Rebekah and Ing provide an insightful look into yoga. Rebekah recommend the book Hollywood Park by Mikel Jollett. Ing recommends An American Summer: Love and Death in Chicago by Alex Kotlowitz.
Dear Rebekah is taking some well-deserved time away from Ing! Ing responds to just a few of the many, many requests for advice from you, our listeners. She also asks for your help as well. Don't worry...Rebekah will be back next week!
"Three Men and a Baby. I laughed so much, I cried and my stomach hurt!" Agree or disagree? Responding to great demand, Rebekah and Ing WILL be soliciting your needs for advice. We are more than happy to be Human Magic 8 Balls, with the capacity to answer questions with more detail than "YES" or "ASK AGAIN LATER." Email your advice needs to shaleryouthservices@gmail.com!
Rebekah talks about her mother's recent transformation and her trip to Ohio. Rebekah recommends the For the Love, a podcast from Jen Hatmaker. She also read Stepping Stones by Lucy Knisley, the Dark Matter of Mona Starr by Laura Lee Gulledge and Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane. Ing would really appreciate it if someone would read Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam by Yasmine Mohammed so that she can talk about it.
The US Supreme Court made the news in a big way last week. Rebekah and Ing provide a little history on the highest court in the land and address some of the controversies surrounding its power, going way back to Jefferson's presidency. Then they share their own thoughts regarding the decisions of Bostock v. Clayton County, GA and Department of Homeland Security v. Regents of Univ. of Cal. Ing recommends Thom Hartmann's book The Hidden History of the Supreme Court and the Betrayal of America. Available for free on audio with you Allegheny County Library Card here and in ebook format here. Also check out this clip from A Mighty Wind as the late, great Fred Willard explains his project idea for an aging folk music group. *Rebekah and Ing are librarians at the Shaler North Hills Library, however the opinions voiced in this podcast are solely their own.
