We often treat loneliness as a private failing or something to feel embarrassed about. But what if feeling lonely isn't a flaw—what if it's an evolutionary alarm system, as vital to our survival as hunger or thirst? In this episode of The Holistic Psychiatrist Podcast, Dr. Alice Lee and her collaborator Emily dive into Thom Hartmann's article, "If Loneliness is Hunger, Then It Has a Remedy as Ordinary as a Meal." Together, they break down why modern society often isolates us by design, the serious physical toll of chronic disconnection, and how true healing requires far more than just diet and supplements. In this episode, we explore:The "Packed Elevator" Paradox: How you can be surrounded by people and still feel deeply isolated—and how researchers define loneliness as the gap between the connection you have and the connection you need. The Health Toll of Disconnection: Why chronic loneliness carries health risks comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and why social networks are essential for longevity.Overcoming Stigma & Hyper-Independence: Breaking down the cultural pressure to "do it all alone" and learning how to build spaces where you feel genuinely seen and witnessed.Real Stories of Transition: Honest reflections on leaving high-demand communities, relocating, navigating medication withdrawal, and the trial-and-error of finding "your people."Small "Designs" for Healing: Practical, gentle ways to bridge the gap—from low-stakes neighborly chats and interest groups, to nature, free-writing, and pets when you aren't quite ready for big social leaps.Whether you're feeling isolated, navigating a major life transition, or simply looking to build deeper, more authentic relationships, this conversation offers grounded insights, comfort, and practical steps forward.Press play to learn how putting ourselves back in each other's paths can transform our health and well-being!For more healing tools and insights, visit holisticpsychiatrist.com.Support the showTo sustain my work as a holistic psychiatrist and support my efforts to improve psychiatric treatment for all through my podcasts, articles, website, and YouTube channel, please show your appreciation and help champion holistic psychiatry by clicking HERE to contribute!Click here to listen to all of The Holistic Psychiatrist Podcast episodesContact here to email Dr. Lee directly. On Tuesday, Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., will face off in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary. The race is the next biggest test of whether progressives can win statewide, particularly in purple territory. The Michigan race is one of the most expensive primaries of the cycle. Outside groups have spent upward of $50 million in support of Stevens or against El-Sayed. Most of that money is coming from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and its affiliated groups — close to $30 million, which their largest investment ever in a single race, according to The AP.“It's just anti-democratic on its own terms,” El-Sayed, the former public health official, tells The Intercept Briefing. “I always ask people, “OK, you're covering this as a very close race, but would it be close if they didn't have $60 million to spend? Would it even be a close race at all?'”This week on The Intercept Briefing podcast, host Akela Lacy asks, can progressives win outside of blue cities? El-Sayed argues, if you focus on the issues people care about and act on them, you can: "Look, you have an option that's not bought off by all the same corporations. And that option is desperately clear about wanting you to have healthcare, and also wanting your kid to have a good school, and also making sure that there's not a data center that gets planted in your backyard to automate your job away.”Lacy explores that question further with Ryan Clancy, a Wisconsin state representative and founding member of the state legislature's current Socialist Caucus, and Thom Hartmann, a progressive political commentator. Clancy says voters he speaks to in Milwaukee “want a fighter. People want people in office who are going to fight for the middle class, fight for actual transformative change.” He adds, “The idea that in order to win in a purple district that is roughly split between Democrats and Republicans, that you need when you're a Democrat, to look as much like a Republican as possible is just not helpful.” Polling suggests that El-Sayed has a commanding lead over Stevens in the Democratic primary. But polls for the November general election narrow sharply when El-Sayed is up against Trump-backed Republican candidate Mike Rogers; one shows Rogers beating him by 10 percentage points, which the Stevens's campaign has leaned into.“We've been in this change moment. We're sick and tired of neoliberalism. We're sick and tired of Reaganism. We're sick and tired of the status quo. We're sick and tired of a dying middle class. We have been living in this moment, in my opinion, since 2000, and I think in a big way since 2008. Obama promised hope and change, and really just brought us a bunch of health insurance companies,” says Hartmann. “I'm not sure if we're there yet to the point where a good message like El-Sayed's message can overcome millions of dollars from Israel and from big corporations. That's going to be the big challenge.”The Intercept invited Stevens on the program for an interview but as of publishing have not heard back yet.Full transcript: https://interc.pt/4fRLS8aKeep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join. How Trump Turns Bigotry Into Official Government Policy and What Did The Fourteenth Amendment Promise America? America is a nation of immigrants, and we have been strengthened in every generation by the diversity of talent and humanity that have come here to participate in the American dream. Bill speaks with American Federation of Teachers President, Randi Weingarten about the political fallout from Republicans' “One Big, Beautiful Bill” ahead of the November midterms, noting a Politico poll showing most Americans haven't heard of it and many who have think it mainly helps the wealthy. Weingarten says July student-loan changes eliminated most prior income-driven repayment plans, raising payments by hundreds or thousands per year for many of the 44 million borrowers, with 3.6 million defaults since Trump returned to office. Now with higher interest, and more debt collection. She promotes the coalition-led One Big Bill Campaign (onebigbill.org) to collect borrowers' stories—such as a Philly school counselor whose payment rose from $90 to $440—and take them to Congress, linking the cuts to tax breaks for the rich alongside reductions to Medicaid and SNAP. They also discuss Trump's efforts to dismantle the Department of Education, voucher expansion, and pressure on universities over DEI and antisemitism claims.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Bill welcomes former Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Ben Wikler to discuss his new book, "This Is the Plan: How to End America's Meltdown and Save Democracy," and Wisconsin's political arc from La Follette-era progressivism to Scott Walker's rollback and a comeback under Gov. Tony Evers. Wikler argues the most effective political work is grassroots, trust-based conversations that target persuadable and low-propensity voters, noting how tiny margins can decide outcomes. He contends Democrats must prioritize state-level races—governors, legislatures, attorneys general, secretaries of state, and especially elected state Supreme Courts—to set election rules and defend democracy against Trump-era threats. Wikler describes building a year-round “permanent campaign” infrastructure in Wisconsin and outlines a step-by-step roadmap from weekly local elections through 2026 battleground-state trifectas, advancing the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, and pursuing major federal democracy reforms in 2029.You can order your copy of Ben's great new book at Bookshop.org.
