The newly minted New York Times bestseller The Renoir Girls by Brit Catherine Ostler tells a hidden story of what really happened to the young girls in Renoir's famous portraits. As it turns out, they were victims of the Holocaust. How could these high-society children have ended up suffering, one even at Auschwitz? The story digs into government, politics, hatred, antisemitism, art, family, wealth, and class. I adored speaking to Catherine, one of the brightest people I've interviewed, and had the pleasure of meeting her in person afterward on the day her book hit “the list.” Huge thanks to Plum Sykes for the introduction. ** Want more? Once more we encounter a county in the grips of agrarian crisis and famine. Resentment lurked around every corner. And all too often, peasants with murderous intent were never far behind.

Rock 'n' roll appeared in the 1950s as the high-energy, electrically amplified music of young dancers and listeners, first in the United States and then around the globe, and from the beginning it symbolized more than music. First popularized as a marketing rubric to sell African-American rhythm and blues to white teenagers, it stood for racial integration, sexual freedom, youthful rebellion, and for change and modernity. It was never a single kind of music, and historians disagree about when it began and which artists or records should be included in its canon--but it was always a flashpoint, whether condemned as an assault on cultural standards or hailed as the most exciting movement of the twentieth century. From royal courts and rural villages to South Philadelphia, poison has long been a weapon of choice for those seeking a discreet way to kill, sometimes spawning organized networks of murder motivated by money, power, or escape from unhappy lives. This episode explores three of history's most notorious poison rings: the Affair of the Poisons in Louis XIV's France, Hungary's Angel Makers of Nagyrév, and the deadly Philadelphia Poison Ring of the 1930s, an alleged murder conspiracy that may have claimed dozens of victims.Join the Harrisburg Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society for a behind-the-scenes look at Harris Tower and the Power Directors Office, two remarkable pieces of Pennsylvania Railroad history hidden in plain sight. Chapter leaders and historians share how this once-bustling rail hub operated, why its 113-lever interlocking machine was a marvel of its time, and how volunteers are preserving its legacy for future generations.

We tend to think of data as something modern—born with smartphones, spreadsheets, and AI. But in Data Empire: The Power of Information to Organize, Control, and Dominate, Roopika Risam argues that data has always been a tool of power: used to count grain, map land, classify people, and decide who gets seen. Then legal scholar Jacqueline Lipton brings the story into the present with Our Data, Ourselves: A Personal Guide to Digital Privacy, a practical look at what we can—and can't—do to protect our personal information.

Back in 2017, I sat down with Anne Wilde, one of the foremost experts on modern-day polygamy. While I like to call her the First Lady of Fundamentalism, she has lived an incredibly unique life as an Independent Fundamentalist. For 33 years, Anne lived as the secret second wife of Ogden Kraut, a prolific fundamentalist author whose 65 books she personally helped write and edit. From the secret history of Mormon schisms to her own spiritual journey, you won’t want to miss this fascinating conversation! https://youtu.be/LH2zMt27kxM Don't miss our other conversations Shannon: https://gospeltangents.com/people/shannon-flynn Copyright © 2026 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Check out a transcript of the interview on Amazon. Pick up a transcript of our conversation! Raised in the mainstream LDS Church, Anne later became an “Independent Fundamentalist” and lived for 33 years as the secret second wife of prolific fundamentalist author Ogden Kraut. This sweeping conversation covers everything from the hidden history of Mormon schisms to controversial theology and modern civil rights. Hidden History of Post-Manifesto Polygamy Many believe plural marriage ended abruptly with the LDS Church’s 1890 Manifesto, but Anne explains it was more like a sunset: “when does it get dark? It’s just gradually.” She points to an uncanonized 1886 revelation received by Church President John Taylor, which fundamentalists believe declared plural marriage an everlasting covenant that could not be changed. Consequently, polygamy continued underground and in places like Mexico and Canada. It took the 1904 Second Manifesto and the 1933 Third Manifesto—which enforced excommunication for those practicing plural marriage—to create a permanent rift between the mainstream church and fundamentalist groups. Untangling the Polygamous Sects One of Anne’s main goals is to dispel the myth that all polygamists are the same. She breaks down the diverse landscape of modern polygamy: The AUB (Apostolic United Brethren): With about 7,500 members, this group has a priesthood council and allows members more free agency in choosing their spouses. (Kody Brown of the TV show Sister Wives comes from this tradition.) FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints): Notorious for the extreme one-man rule of Warren Jeffs, this group practices arranged marriages and strict dress codes. Anne notes that Jeffs’ oppressive control and habit of splitting up families has caused their numbers to plummet. Since he went to prison, the numbers are about 10% of what they were. Centennial Park: A breakaway group of about 2,000 members who separated from the FLDS because they wanted a priesthood council rather than a one-man dictatorship. Ervil LeBaron: Anne also discusses dangerous outliers like Ervil LeBaron, a militant polygamist who claimed his own priesthood authority and became an assassin responsible for roughly 20 deaths, including that of AUB leader Rulon Allred. Independent Fundamentalists: Anne identifies with this category—believers who adhere to early doctrines and plural marriage but choose not to affiliate with any centralized sect. Surprising Stances on Gay Marriage Despite their conservative theology, Anne reveals that many fundamentalists support the legalization of gay marriage. Viewing it through the lens of civil rights, she argues that if polygamists want the government to decriminalize their own family structures, they must grant the same free agency to the LGBTQ+ community. She also expressed deep disappointment with the LDS Church’s 2015 policy that temporarily barred the children of gay parents from being baptized, feeling it wrongly punished children. Anne Wilde’s Controversial Theology: Was Jesus a Polygamist? Anne Wilde and her late husband, Ogden Kraut, authored numerous books, including a highly popular 1969 text arguing that Jesus Christ was a polygamist. She suggests that the wedding feast at Cana was actually Christ’s own wedding, and that he was married to at least Mary, Martha, and Mary Magdalene. She also tackles difficult aspects of Doctrine and Covenants Section 132, such as the “Law of Sarah,” which ideally requires a first wife’s consent for subsequent marriages. However, Anne notes that if a first wife adamantly refuses to consent to a priesthood law, the husband is exempt from her approval and can marry anyway. Furthermore, she interprets the scriptural mentions of “concubines” not as sex slaves, but as lesser, non-covenant wives permitted by the customs of the era. Advocacy and the 2002 Olympics After living in secret for decades, Anne stepped into the public eye ahead of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Tired of seeing only bitter ex-members defining the narrative around plural marriage, Anne co-founded an advocacy group called “Principle Voices“. During the Olympics, they provided hundreds of press packets and fielded interviews with global media to offer a positive perspective on the lifestyle and to clearly distinguish themselves from the abuses of the FLDS church. Ultimately, Anne's story is a call for understanding. Whether you agree with her lifestyle or not, her experiences provide a rare, inside look at a marginalized community deeply woven into the fabric of Mormon history. Questions to ponder: 1. In what ways do the civil rights struggles of polygamists align with those of the LGBTQ+ community? 2. Why is it important to recognize the structural and cultural differences between various polygamous sects? 3. How does the “Law of Sarah” impact the balance of agency and power within a plural marriage? 4. What role does media representation play in shaping the narrative of marginalized or secretive religious communities? empires, capable of rewriting the history books. It: In quel momento, il direttore entrò nella stanza.En: At that moment, the director entered the room. It: Vide la lettera decifrata e, invece di arrabbiarsi, il suo sguardo si addolcì.En: He saw the deciphered letter and, instead of getting angry, his expression softened. It: "Forse avete scoperto qualcosa di grande," riconobbe.En: “Perhaps you Year(s) Discussed: 1813-1817 Most of what you think you know about early 19th-century American expansion is incomplete. A renegade naval captain, a privateer turned rogue, and a series of clandestine operations reshaped the Western Hemisphere's borders — and the U.S. presidency's approach to sovereignty, power, and diplomacy. This episode explores the complex history of early American foreign policy, filibustering expeditions, and key figures like Joel R. Poinsett and Jean Lafitte, revealing how these events shaped the nation's expansion and international relations in the early days of Monroe's presidency. What if your body isn't just a physical structure but a living transmitter and receiver of cosmic information? Jessica Taylor, channel and Pleiadian messenger, breaks down why the human body is fundamentally a system of frequencies, how your cells communicate through light, and why healing the biofield — your energetic terrain — is the foundation of all true transformation. She also unpacks how Pleiadian frequencies are interacting with human DNA right now, why so many people are experiencing physical symptoms as their consciousness upgrades, and how to work with sound, light, and frequency to accelerate your own cellular evolution. About the Guest Jessica Taylor is a channel, medium, and spiritual guide who works primarily with Kistos — a seventh-dimensional Pleiadian consciousness — alongside other galactic and interdimensional beings. Beginning her journey in mediumship, Jessica's vibration progressively elevated to galactic frequencies, transitioning from communicating with disincarnate humans to receiving transmissions about consciousness, dimensional reality, and humanity's ascension path. Her work focuses on helping individuals raise their frequency, open the heart center, and prepare for direct galactic contact through inner alignment rather than external seeking. For years we have been told that UFOs were only interesting to people who are disconnected from reality, don't understand science, or live in trailers drinking beer. We were instructed on what to believe when any evidence was presented; that anything potentially credible, i.e. unexplained and not a hoax, was fake. Then, suddenly, the narrative changed. We were given documents, photographs, and videos that appears for a moment to be groundbreaking but upon closer examination were details we already knew. A few documents presented interesting reports that are questionable as per their legitimacy. Overall we were told to suddenly make our own conclusions, and believe whatever we choose. Meanwhile, "amateur" astronomers have obtained footage far more credible that there is unexplainable, sometimes explainable, evidence of something.https://www.crrow777radio.comhttps://www.war.gov/medialink/ufo/071026/release_04/documents/DOE-UAP-D004_Los-Alamos-Conference-on-Aerial-Phenomena_1949.pdfhttps://dn760109.eu.archive.org/0/items/chronologicalcat00midd/chronologicalcat00midd.pdf*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. July 14, 2026: Jonathan Ezra Goldman Discusses New Book on the “Hidden History” of 1920s New York by The Indypendent
...in which we ramble up remote Liddesdale in the extreme north-east of Cumbria to uncover the remarkable history of a unique independent territory transformed into a bloody borderland. In the company of author and academic Graham Robb we set out from Kershopefoot along the trackbed of the historic Waverley Line, taking in the landscape of the once-unique enclave between England and Scotland; an uninhabited ‘batable' grazing land bounded by the rivers Liddel, Esk and Sark that formed a buffer zone between often warring nations. Stepping into the Scottish Borders, we discuss the popular perception of the ‘reiving' families who lived around this anomalous territory – the Elliots, Armstrongs and Grahams – and the raids that saw cattle rustled and fortified peel towers set ablaze. Surveying moorland and scattered woods to rising Tinnis Hill, Graham outlines a parallel history; one of stability, in which a raid was not thuggery, but a coming-of-age ritual/form of trade in an advanced pastoral society with strict Border laws that kept the peace for 1,500 years. Passing meadows with folds and dips that made ideal hiding places for rogues and raiders, we move into the mid-1500s, when the English and Scots crowns orchestrated a plan to carve up the Debatable Land by making lawlessness legal, preparing the ground for characters like ballad outlaw Kinmont Willie and the sadistic Duke of Buccleuch to conduct reigns of terror. Closing in on Liddel Water, we learn about the end of the Debatable Land, and the “astonishingly beautiful and accurate map” (below) that recorded the establishment of what Graham argues is “the oldest detectable territorial division in Great Britain”. Reflecting on the violent excesses that wiped the one-time grazing lands from the map, Graham discusses the long shadow cast by imperial colonialism, the persistent discomfort over cross-border marriage and the independent spirit that lingers in border folk. We close with our quickfire questions, where Graham recalls a relationship-testing ascent of Swirral Edge, waxes lyrical about the definitive descriptions of Cumbrian rain in Rogue Herries and notes the advice he was given before moving into the borderlands – to “leave the pub by 9.30 at the latest”. The Debatable Land: The Lost World Between Scotland and England is published by Picador.

You can find Emily Franklin at www.emilyfranklin.com or on IG at emilyfranklinauthor At the end of May, we attended a Carmichael's book event featuring author Emily Franklin, who has written numerous books. Her latest titled Love & Other Monsters is about a time in history that most English majors look on with awe and wonder. Her novel is about the summer of 1816 when Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron and John Polidori traveled to Switzerland and, as the legend goes, told scary stories to each other, which ended up leading to the first vampire story and the book we now know as Frankenstein. But Franklin's novel focuses on a member of the party who doesn't get any acknowledgement—Mary's step-sister Claire Clairemont. Emily did a great job making the Carmichael's audience want to learn more about Claire's story, so we invited her on to share it with our listeners. And for our book recommendation segment of the show, we are talking Shakespeare, the Bard, the Swan of Avon, Willy Shakes. Shakespeare is such a touchstone in literature in ways that we don't regularly think about like classic phrases and tropes. But you don't have to be (or not to be) a Shakespeare scholar to enjoy the books we talk about this week. We have a historical mystery, witty nonfiction, historical fiction, a memoir, a middle grade novel, and a novel in verse. All are influenced in some way by Shakespeare's plays or the man himself. Books Mentioned In This Episode: 1- Love and Other Monsters by Emily Franklin 2- Grandma Joy & Me: A Journey of Healing , One National Park at a Time by Brad Ryan 3- The Humming Room by Ellen Potter 4- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 5- Summer of 1816: A World Without Summer by Nicholas Day 6- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley 7- The Vampyre by John Polidori 8- Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless: What Mushrooms Taught Me About Nourishment, Poison, Ecology, Hidden Histories, Zombies, and Black Survival by Maria Pinto 9- Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman 10- Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbly Weiden 11- Wisdom Corner by David Heska Wanbly Weiden 12- A Five Star Read of Fellow Book Lover Joshua - Devotions by Mary Oliver 13- Daughter of Fair Verona by Christina Dodd 14- Much Ado About Mistletoe by Christina Dodd 15- Shakespeare: The World as a Stage by Bill Bryson 16- By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult 17- Enter the Body by Joy McCullough 18- Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent by Judi Dench 19- The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Most people visit Chichen Itza and leave. But the Yucatan holds something far deeper — hidden pyramids, sacred caves, alien carvings, underground cenotes, and living Mayan wisdom keepers who carry knowledge the world hasn't fully decoded yet. Neil, Nanakasha, and Chris Noble sit down to pull back the curtain on a sacred journey into the heart of the Maya — exploring how these ancient sites were built as power plants, initiation portals, and star maps, and why the land itself seems to heal everyone who arrives. From Atlantean origins and Pleiadian connections to crystal activations and levitation experiences, this is the Yucatan nobody talks about.
In Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment, Poison, Ecology, Hidden Histories, Zombies, and Black Survival (University of North Carolina Press, 2026), naturalist, forager, and educator Maria Pinto uncovers strange and beautiful connections between the natural and human worlds, mingling reportage, research, memoir, and nature writing, touching on topics that range from Black farmers' domestication of the unforgettable aroma of truffles, to the possibility that enslaved people wielded mycological poisons against their enslavers. Pinto brings a new perspective and a distinctive literary voice to this mix of environmental and lived history, and every page sings with her enthusiasm for the networks in which we are embedded: fungal, ecological, ancestral, and communal. Heather Taylor Demo has lived a life most people couldn't imagine surviving — trafficked at 13, gang life in Orange County, face ripped off by a dog at age 2, and six near-death experiences across childhood and adulthood. But what she brings back from the other side each time isn't fear — it's medicine. In this raw and remarkable conversation, Heather shares what she was shown during her NDEs, the moment the Reaper told her karma was complete and she could leave, and why she chose to stay for her five kids. She also breaks down the science and soul behind crystal singing bowls, how sound frequency pulled her out of a wheelchair, and why the ancient technology of vibration is only now catching up with mainstream science. About the Guest Heather Taylor Demo is a six-time near-death experiencer, sound healing practitioner, herbalist, author, and co-creator of Divine Bowls — a direct-to-market crystal singing bowl company rooted in the original 1975 quartz bowl technology developed for the semiconductor industry. A 10th-generation preacher with indigenous and druid lineage, Heather survived trafficking, gang life, a decade in a wheelchair, and multiple brushes with death before stepping fully into her role as a healer, teacher, and storyteller. Her work bridges ancient plant medicine, frequency healing, and modern science — and she's currently expanding Divine Bowls globally while developing a Netflix series launching first in Japan. The rules were never designed to make everyone equally powerful. In this episode of High Level Conversations, 19Keys sits down with Dr. Boyce Watkins for an unfiltered discussion about economics, ownership, education, artificial intelligence, politics, family infrastructure, Black business, and the systems required to create real freedom. The conversation begins with a critical question: What matters more in the age of AI—credentials, experience, mastery, or the ability to build your own system? From there, they break down the difference between earning money and controlling an economy, why community leaders must have sustainable business models, what it truly means to be pro-Black, and why Black wealth cannot grow without intentional investment, mentorship, protection networks, family offices, and institution-building.They also examine:Why criticism and cancellation are unavoidable when your work has real impact. Why Black men remain one of the most under-mentored groups in America. How billionaires, celebrities, and athletes should think about community responsibility. Why investing in Black businesses is more powerful than treating the community like a charity case.Whether artificial intelligence and technology stocks are experiencing a bubble. How to invest during economic uncertainty without gambling on hype. Why systems create powerful individuals—not the other way around. How families can build banks, investment structures, and generational leverage.Donald Trump, the MAGA movement, political independence, reparations, and voting power. Why economic strength requires strategy, negotiation, coordination, and the willingness to think much bigger. This conversation challenges the idea that freedom will come from being accepted by existing institutions. It presents another pathway: understand the system, study how power operates, build your own infrastructure, and position the next generation to thrive instead of merely survive.WHY YOU SHOULD WATCHThis episode is for entrepreneurs, investors, parents, educators, community builders, creators, and leaders who want to understand the deeper relationship between money and power. You will learn:The difference between income, ownership, influence, and economic control. How to protect your mission from criticism, censorship, and outside interference. Why mentorship and sponsorship can change the trajectory of Black men.How family offices and family banks preserve wealth across generations. How to approach AI, technology, stocks, and long-term investing intelligently. Why political power must be negotiated before support is given. How communities can transform influence into infrastructure and economic force.BUILD YOUR NETWORK, COMMUNITY, AND DIGITAL ECONOMYVisit ZIION.IOFREE AI AND INCOME WEBINARFor access to the free webinar from 19Keys about artificial intelligence and using AI to create income, join the free webinar inside the Black Business School by visiting:19keys.com/bbsEPISODE TIMESTAMPS00:00 — Economics Is Warfare02:00 — Credentials, Artificial Intelligence and the Meaning of Mastery10:00 — Turning Your Greatest Weakness Into a Strength15:00 — Truth, Activism and the Cost of Going Against the Grain18:00 — Can Black America Still Build Economic Sovereignty?25:00 — Understanding Power, Criticism and Opposition28:00 — Separating Constructive Criticism From Distraction32:00 — “You Can't Cancel a Soldier”36:00 — Why Community Empowerment Needs a Sustainable Business Model40:00 — What Does Being Pro-Black Actually Mean?42:00 — Health, Wealth and Relationships52:00 — Systemic Racism and Systems Thinking54:00 — Manufacturing Black Privilege Through Ownership56:00 — Why Black Men Are Severely Under-Mentored01:00:00 — Building Mentorship, Sponsorship and Protection Networks01:07:00 — Black Unity, Michael Jordan and Intentional Employment01:08:00 — Do Black Billionaires Owe the Community?01:14:00 — Family Offices and Who Controls Black Wealth01:17:00 — Investment Versus Charity01:22:00 — Investing in Black AI, Technology and Venture Capital01:23:00 — Stop Thinking Small: Building Billion-Dollar Ideas01:27:00 — Creating Independent Media and Economic Systems01:29:00 — Why Real Power Moves Strategically01:31:00 — Economics Is Warfare: Prepare to Be Attacked01:32:00 — Building Outside the Matrix With ZIION01:39:00 — The Hidden History of Black Coalitions and Nation-Building01:43:00 — Is Artificial Intelligence an Economic Bubble?01:46:00 — How to Invest During Market Uncertainty01:49:00 — Elon Musk, Key-Man Risk and Technology Empires01:51:00 — Powerful Individuals Are Products of Powerful Systems01:54:00 — Quantum Computing and Undervalued Future Technologies01:59:00 — What Could the Next 10 to 20 Years Look Like?02:04:00 — Healthcare, Capitalism and the Incentive to Manage Disease02:09:00 — Money, Ethics and Financial Consciousness02:14:00 — Family Banks, Infrastructure and Generational Capital02:18:00 — Why Schools Teach Employment Instead of Ownership02:20:00 — Turning Your Family Name Into an Institution02:23:00 — Self-Worth, Asset Value and Building Your Own Name02:25:00 — The MAGA Question02:28:00 — Studying Power Without Worshipping Powerful People02:30:00 — How to Give Your Children a Financial Head Start02:37:00 — Stop Depending on Systems That Were Not Built for You02:43:00 — Power, Competition and Self-Preservation02:45:00 — Reparations, Negotiation and Leverage02:48:00 — Putting the Black Vote in Escrow02:50:00 — The New Political Classes02:55:00 — Leaders, Impact and Building Economic Infrastructure02:57:00 — Final Words and Closinghttps://youtu.be/_RBftcP3Gng Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/19keys/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
June was a long month, and Jonah Goldberg is feeling entitled to a little bit of self-indulgence. Instead of turning to the bottle, however, he has opted for a rollicking, frolicsome ramble through the deep history of conspiracy theory. Jonah is joined by Andrew McKenzie-McHarg, author of the definitive volume on the topic, to discuss conspiracy theory (singular), etymology, secularization, 19th-century social science, the paranoid style, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, Argentina, magic and science, antisemitism, apocalyptic thinking, Karl Popper, Richard Hofstadter, Karl Marx, World War I, Donald Trump, social media, institutions, and Catholicism. Show Notes: —Andrew McKenzie-McHarg - The Hidden History of Conspiracy Theory —Jesse Walker - The United States of Paranoia: A Conspiracy Theory —Richard Hofstadter - “The Paranoid Style in American Politics” —Jesse Walker review of The Hidden History of Conspiracy Theory in Reason The Remnant is a production of The Dispatch, a digital media company covering politics, policy, and culture from a nonpartisan perspective.
