Problem requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives

These are my reflections upon Arnold Eisen's 2015 essay, "Joseph, Hanukkah, and the Dilemmas of Assimilation." Those who investigate the Hanukkah story quickly learn (simply by reading the Books of Maccabees in the apocrypha) that the events around the 186 BCE revolt of the Maccabees against the Hellenizing-Syrians do not involve a miracle of oil. Rather, following the decree by Antiochus IV that the Temple in Jerusalem be dedicated to Hellistic religion, the Maccabees first attack Hellenized Jews themselves, who show little to no resistance to the decree. (Josephus tells us, more or less, that the Greek sports stadium in Jerusalem was a far better draw to local Jews than the Temple.) The second part of the story involves the Maccabees attacking the Syrian-Greek forces themselves, and achieving victory. (Two hundred years later, living under the oppression of the Roman forces, and witnessing Roman massacres of Jews following rebellions, the Rabbis introduced the folktale of the oil to distract Jews from a story encouraging further rebellion against Hellenistic forces.) So, when we today read the original tale, it creates uncomfortable questions about assimilation. Aren't most American Jews going to sports games on Saturday rather than to temple? Aren't most American Jews unrecognizable from their peers, as Joseph was unrecognizable to his brothers? The simple narrative of assimilation states that American Jews were quick to assimilate for personal and social gain. In this presentation, I argue that this little-challenged narrative is oversimplified, wrong and damaging.
GW17 kicks off this Tuesday, so we have precious little time to preview the matches and sharpen our FPL strategy. Dr. Chad Hoggan is an Associate Professor of Adult Education at North Carolina State University and Co-editor of the Journal of Transformative Education. Dr. Hoggan's research is human transformation and learning. We all grow up and form a certain identity for ourselves and how we see the world. Then, oftentimes we have, as Dr. Hoggan would describe them, disorienting dilemmas where our assumptions of the world are challenged for whatever reason. This could be a traumatic life-changing experience or even the small cumulative effect of learning, questioning, and growing. Either way, we are forced to re-evaluated who we are and potentially change and transform into something different. This is what this episode is about. How we navigate those transformations in a healthy way...Website:http://chadhoggan.comI am currently opening up a very limited number of spots for 1-on-1 clients at the start of the new year. How and when should we decide today what areas of future public policy we are not prepared to trust our future selves to make wisely? In other words, when should we voluntarily constrain our future democratic choices by privileging our current democratic choices? This is the theme of my discussion in this episode with Professor Andrés Velasco, the Dean of the School of Public Policy at the London School of Economics and the former Finance Minister of Chile. While somewhat common in monetary economic policy (think independent central banks immune to short term democratic pressures), Andrés and I explore how/whether this self-restraint framework can/should be applied to areas like quantitative easing, fiscal and environmental policy.Andrés not only has the intellectual firepower, matched by world class academic credentials, to address these questions. As the former Finance Minister of Chile, he was responsible for the creation of two special sovereign funds which attempted to stabilize Chilean governmental spending at a long-term sustainable level. His mixture of practical political experience and academic skill make him the ideal guest to discuss these issues. I hope you enjoy the conversation! As mentioned in the podcast:Henrich, J. Aren't we the best at infection control? Then why did the ADA put out guidance that makes it okay for us to turn away unvaccinated patients? Is it an ethics matter or a political matter? Who knows the difference anymore. We then move across the pond to the British Dental Association's YUGE waiting list. Finally, a story about an adorable service dog melts Kevin's heart and gets him to make shmoopsy-poo type noises. Don't miss it!

As we now hurtle toward the festive period, Premier League fixtures are about to start piling up. Rotation and fatigue are worries and its time to look seriously at the quality of our FPL benches. This week, we're attempting a commonsense approach in tackling some major fantasy dilemmas: We estimate the shelf-life of the current preferred "big at the back" defense—how long can fullbacks like Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and João Cancelo keep up this rate of return? Antonio Conte's project at Spurs is also up for debate as we look at the new manager's impact on Harry Kane and Heung-min Son. Are they transfers to watch or to avoid? Plus, we assess the state of our meager forward lines and look for new striker talent ahead of GW13. Hail Cheaters! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The reason that Leh and Todd do this show is to help people going through difficult times. That includes sharing resources that they believe will help their listeners. In today's show, they interview the co-hosts of the new podcast Co-Parenting Dilemmas. Their podcast takes listener questions and answers them on the show! After Diane and Rick explain the why, what and how behind their new show, Leh and Todd discuss the dark side of Georgia's 14 year old election statute. Diane and Rick share their concerns and the negative consequences of allowing a 14 year old to decide with whom they want to live.
Kevin Kossowan is the creator of From The Wild, a James Beard award nominated, culinary adventure series about wild foods that has elevated field cookery to a level not really seen before in a tv series. A film maker, he's also the co-creator of Les Stroud's Wild Harvest on PBS and Nat Geo. One of the things we love about talking with Kevin is his willingness to get into some of the more taboo and uncomfortable nooks and crannies of the ethical and moral and ecological obligations of hunting, fishing, and foraging... especially into conversations we, as hunters, are often told we shouldn't have. While the first part of this conversation is some catch up, talk about recent harvests and the landscapes they happen in, the second part of this conversation really heats up, as Daniel and Kevin start talking about things like pollution in wild foods, ethics in killing, and the things that motivate or deter us from participating or not participating in harvests. The terrain gets sticky, and that's precisely why we think it's important to explore. Because what we do, harvesting organisms from the wild for food, needs to be clearly articulated for us to make quality decisions about life and death, and of course, for the public to understand — and hopefully support — our choices, and the system of laws that legally governs our actions. Some of these moral quandaries and ethical dilemmas aren't solvable, they're too nuanced and individual for that. Instead, each of us has to dig deep inside to determine where we land on these issues. We hope you enjoy this conversation! The clothing retail industry is not known for being climate friendly. The textile industry, as a whole, emits 1.2 billion tons of carbon and uses five trillion liters of water per year.Dawnielle Tellez, an EDF Climate Corps alum, is candid and thoughtful about the challenges of making the outdoor apparel industry more sustainable. “What's been tough for me to realize is that at the end of the day, the outdoor industry and broadly apparel industry is reliant on fossil fuels,” she tells Yesh Pavlik Slenk. She finds reasons for hope, though. Tellez says the circular economy, the adoption of lower carbon materials, and scaling decarbonization are exciting, emerging ways the apparel industry will be reducing negative environmental impacts going forward. Tellez advises people looking to get into sustainability careers to set goals, ask for informational interviews, and explore the kinds of degrees she and other sustainability specialists have pursued. “The space is just wide open right now,” she says. “I feel like you can really carve out whatever it is that you want.”Tellez fights social challenges as well as climate change—particularly the historical exclusion of marginalized groups from outdoor activities. She hopes to see them become more visible and included in the outdoor imagination—some of which is modeled by high-profile outdoor apparel companies like REI.“Looking to groups that are bringing access and knowledge of sport, [such as] Black Girls Run, Outdoor Afro, Latino Outdoors, organizations that are doing incredible work to build community amongst different BIPOC groups is, I think, hugely valuable to how we're going to be able to make the outdoors actually accessible for all people going forward.”Resources mentioned in this episode:REI: A Sustainable Future, REI's blog about their sustainability initiativesGRID Alternatives: GRID Alternatives. Life isn't always black and white. Dilemmas are often faced when looking at the grey areas of life. What's right and wrong in any given situation is not always clear. When faced with a dilemma, how do I know if I'm making the right decision. How can I decide when I should get involved and speak up in a situation and when to stay quiet and keep the peace. There are countless dilemmas that we face with no clear answer. Is there guidance when facing these situations?
