This story is one of grief, hope, childhood trauma, conflicts between faith and science, and racism and immigration in North America. We'll cover many of the books themes and writing devices, its approach at describing science and graduate student life, and talk about the challenges faced by the protagonist both in the lab and her difficult past. Writer and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth has chosen EF Benson's entertaining tale of competitive snobbery in the 1920s, Mapp and Lucia. In a contrasting choice, neuroscientist Hannah Critchlow advocates for Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi, a story of a Ghanaian family transplanted to Alabama which takes in neuroscience and opiate addiction. Harriett has gone for a real crowd-pleaser in E. Nesbit's The Railway Children and all three enjoy a bit of nostalgia for the times when children could run free having adventures around the railway. Hi readers! Kari here. Alexis and I are switching up the schedule this and next week to correctly set the stage for No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe. Published in the 1960s, No Longer at Ease is the second work of Achebe's African Trilogy, which begins with the distinguished High School required read Things Fall Apart. It deals with themes such as cultural integrity versus colonialization and assimilation.  So, this week, we thought it's fitting to revisit one of our favorite works of historical fiction that also tackles these themes in a beautifully illustrious way — Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. Next week, we'll revisit Things Fall Apart by Achebe. Then, on the 14th, we'll return with No Longer at Ease, a book neither Alexis nor I have read before. We're excited to read it for the first time with all of you. So, if you're stateside, enjoy your long weekend, and wherever you are in the world, we hope this book makes you feel something extraordinary, as it did with us. Enjoy!❤️

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

It's the last book club for 2020, friends! This month, we read Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi - a novel that centres around Gifty, a neuroscientist at Stanford who studies addiction and depression neural circuits through experimenting with mice. This, we come to learn, is no coincidence. Transcendent Kingdom deals with grief, mental illness, and religion, and also takes us back through Gifty's life: From her brother's opioid addiction to a disappearing father to being sent to Ghana to live with her Aunt while her mother battles depression at home. Transcendent Kingdom was a NYT bestseller and is Yaa Jessie's second published work. Mich sat down for an interview with Yaa about her novel, which we will play in the second half of this episode. Join us in the all the book chat over on our Insta, @theshamelessbookclub, and our TikTok, @theshamelessbookclub. We're back with our first episode of the new season and we're starting off with a bang! Debut novel River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Shearer is a deeply affecting work of historical fiction that will transport you to the slave plantations of Barbados in 1834. Mary Grace, Micah, Thomas Augustus, Cherry Jane and Mercy. These are the names of Rachel's children sold to places across the Caribbean. Unable to wait for her freedom, she escapes the plantation and embarks on a mother's journey to find her lost kin.   Described by the Observer as ‘a tender exploration of one woman's courage in the face of unbelievable cruelty. The heart of the novel lies in its celebration of motherhood and female resilience.'  If you loved Andrea Levy's The Long Song or Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing, then this book is for you. River Sing Me Home is published by Headline Review and available now. We recommend buying a copy from your local indie bookshop or you can visit our shop on bookshop.org. You can add a blender ball to help create the frothy foam you are trying to achieve with the egg white.Add ice, remove blender ball (if using), and shake again 3-5 seconds, until the shaker starts to get cold. Do not over shake, as the foam will break and fall flat.Strain into your glass of choice. Immediately before drinking, add the lemon juice to the drink for the “ghostly apparition” to appear. For the honey simple syrup: heat ½ cup honey, ½ cup sugar, and 1 cup water and bring to a simmer. Let cook until desired thickness. Note: it will appear thin and runny in the pan, but when cooled, it will have a thicker syrup consistency.

A novel of remarkable sweep and power, with each character's life indelibly drawn, Homegoing reveals the devastating legacy of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit. (Picture: Yaa Gyasi. Then, on to our book...   Following the story of two sisters and the generations they birthed, this week's book covers each woman's journey from the tribe of their childhood to their children's lives and their children's children in America. Encuentros Latinx posts monthly, short reflections for spiritual contemplation, so go check them out if devotional reading is part of your spiritual practice.   I've got a book recommendation for you today: Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi. It's about a woman named Gifty who's the daughter of Ghanain immigrants and is currently a neuroscience PhD candidate. But she comes from a strong Pentecostal background, a mother struggling with mental health issues, and a family tragedy that, over time, upended Gifty's absolute faith in God. Gifty is forced to confront all of this when her mother enters into her worst spell with her mental health issues in many, many years. This is a phenomenal novel and Gifty's story reminds me so much of the faith journeys that many of my guests have shared on this podcast.   Speaking of guests, today you'll hear my conversation with RJ Robles, which spans from an incident with biting ants in Puerto Rico to an expansion and weaving together of multiple spiritualities. It's quite a ride challenging every barrier of faith and gender, so let's get right into this encuentro.   Encuentros Latinx reflection piece by La Muna: https://www.ucc.org/5-loaves-of-bread-and-2-fish/   RJ's social media Instagram: @boiricanjoy  Facebook: RJ Robles
