Hall used to fill her notebooks, loose leaf papers, her brother's yearbook, and in church bulletins. She never used to write on freeway overpasses, buildings, or walls as she used to consider it as graffiti. For a period of 4 years, author Hall has lived in Santa Cruz. The episode also includes a brief conversation with founding director Steph Opitz, about the origins of the 1st Wordplay Festival.

Shankari discusses writing from a place of anger and love, the changing Australian publishing landscape, and how literature creates an archive of the dispossessed.  This episode connects to our conversations with previous guests Nardi Simpson (ep 18), Luke Stegemann (ep 26), David Heska Wanbli Weiden (ep 40), in which we explore the legacy of mass traumatic events on the health of communities and society. Shankari Chandran was raised in Canberra, Australia. She spent a decade in London, working as a lawyer in the social justice field, before returning to Australia, where she now lives with her husband and children. She is the author of two previous novels, Song of the Sun God, and The Barrier, and has been shortlisted for the Fairway National Literary Award and the Norma K Hemming Award for speculative fiction.  Learn more about Shankari on her website, and buy a copy of Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens from your local bookshop, Booktopia or wherever else books are sold.  Books and authors discussed in this episode: A Brief Marriage by Anuk Arudpragasam; Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell; Song of the Crocodile by Nardi Simpson (from ep 18); Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie; They All Fall Down by Rachel Howzell Hall; David Heska Wanbli Weiden (from ep 40); Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian translated by Mabel Lee; Amnesia Road by Luke Stegemann (from ep 26) Check out Shankari's essay on writing and resilience published by Writing NSW. Combo? I'm a pantser for sure. I'd like to be more of a plotter, but for some reason it doesn't stick with me. 2.   Tea or Coffee? Coffee in the morning, and tea later on (in colder months).3.   Beer, Wine, or Cocktails? All of the above! I'm taking a break from wine right now, so I'm drinking more vodka and soda with my own mixers (fresh herbs and citrus). This is my usual spring/summer routine, when I'm out running more in the sun. 4.   Snacks: Sweet or Savory? Savory. I love a good dessert, but can go months without sweets. Chips on the other hand…I'll eat the whole bag and look for more. 5.   Indie Published, Traditionally Published, or Hybrid? Traditionally published. 6.   Strict Writing Schedule: Yes or No. Yes. When I'm on top of my game or on deadline, I write for 2-3 hours early mornings. The rest of the day is for working on my other jobs (Malice and Level Best)7.    Strictly Computer or Mix It Up? Computer, although I always have a journal with me to jot quick notes. I also use Google Keep and Notes for random thoughts when I'm away from my desk. And Pinterest to save articles that have kernels of inspiration in them. 8.    Daily Goal: Yes or No. Yes, although I've been working on putting less pressure on myself in all areas of life. 9.    Formal Track Progress: Yes or no. Yes, I use Scrivner which keeps my goals in front of me. 10.  Special Writing Spot? If it's dark out and everyone is asleep still, I'll write in bed, or on the couch under a blanket. I love my desk but spend a lot of time there on other work that I try to mix it up during my creative hours. Coffee shops are good for me too (when we can do that again!)11.   Writer's Block? This hasn't been a challenge for me (thank goodness). I have too many ideas. My challenge is managing time and accomplishing everything. 12.   File of Ideas: Yes or No Yes (see Pinterest comment above, and journal notes)13.   Favorite Author(s)? Oooh….that's a really long list, and I'll forget some folks I'm sure but off the top of my head now: Louise Penny, Ann Cleeves, Martin Edwards, Jennifer Hillier, SA Cosby, Stephen King, Megan Abbott, Sherry Harris, Bruce Coffin, Tana French, Gillian Flynn, Agatha Christie, Ruth Ware, Laura Lippman, Rachel Howzell Hall, Lori Rader-Day, Edwin Hill, Walter Mosley.

Happy August, readers! This month, we wanted a light beach read to help us make it through these remaining dog days of summer. Instead, we got a wild And Then There Were None-inspired murder fest where a man gets boiled alive in a hot tub. Fun. We read They All Fall Down, by Rachel Howzell Hall, and it's full to the brim of assholes. We read as an equally asshole-y lawyer lures them to a tropical paradise where they're cut down one by one. There are guns, cocaine, poisonous sushi and, deadliest of all, the world's longest silk scarf. Listen in as we discuss this motley crew of murderers and bandits and decide who had the best (worst?) death. No BCLChat question this time! In our next episode, we’re trying something new. Instead of asking you guys a question and sharing your answers, we’re going to pick a topic or issue to discuss and have more structured (read: researched lol) conversations about them. More episodes like our #RITASsoWhite discussion, for example. Next chat, we’re discussing black booktubers and discuss the issues they face on the platform. Thanks for listening and be sure to rate, review and subscribe to us on iTunes. As always, thank you to Suite45 for our theme song, Jones’n.

Happy July! It's a chattier chat than usual as we dig into some book news from around Twitter and the business pages. Angie Thomas kicks off Twitter controversy by ... asking not to be tagged in reviews? Microsoft shut down its ebook service, meaning customers who bought books through that service lost them. This is a good reminder to us all that we don’t actually own our ebooks. Loud, ignorant people on the internet are mad that Halle Bailey got a job as Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid remake. We also asked you all what upcoming releases you're most looking forward to. You gave us some great titles to add to our TBR. Thanks to @curvyblackgeek, @almost_esq, @IamTammiJ and @charelliam for sending us their picks! As always, thanks for listening and be sure to check out our next episode when we read and discuss They All Fall Down by Rachel Howzell Hall.

Show's a bit different this week. Tahmeka's traveling for work, so I'm (Jeanette) manning it solo. I'm speaking with Léonicka Valcius about Canadian literature, working for Scholastic Book Fair and also the Festival of Literary Diversity that we talked about briefly in the last show. Léonicka also provides a reading list of excellent Canadian books/authors to check out. Show rounds out with a solo "What Are You Reading?" because I'm newly obsessed with Rachel Howzell Hall and needed to fangirl.
