Is loving your family first a biblical idea—or a betrayal of Jesus' call to love your neighbor? In this thought-provoking episode, Mike Tolliver—Executive Director of the Center for Hebraic Thought—joins Dru Johnson to explore his developing PhD thesis on Storge (family love), the kinsman-redeemer, and what biblical justice actually looks like. Drawing on Torah, philosophy, and early Christian texts, Mike argues that Storge love is not only natural—it's essential to a functioning society, and that Israel's family-based justice system was designed to eliminate categories like “orphan” and “widow.” He explores why Paul uses the metaphor of adoption—and not kinsman-redeemer—for Gentile inclusion, and why the Ten Commandments are saturated with family ethics. From Sophie's Choice-style sermon illustrations to questions about circumcision, baptism, and ethnic election, this episode unpacks the implications of what it means to love your kin without devaluing the stranger. As Mike prepares for PhD work, his big question is: What does rightly ordered family love look like in Scripture—and what happens when it gets misordered? We are listener supported. Michael and Caleb dive into classic philosophical thought experiments to uncover Stoic solutions to impossible choices. From the infamous Trolley Problem to the Happiness Machine, they examine how Stoicism's focus on virtue, context, and roles provides a unique framework for moral decision-making.Unlike utilitarian or rule-based ethics, the Stoic approach emphasizes character over consequences, yet remains practical when facing life's hardest choices. All too often, capitalism is identified with the for-profit sector. However, one organizational form whose importance is often overlooked is nonprofits. Roughly 4% of the American economy, including most universities and hospital systems, are nonprofit. One prominent nonprofit currently at the center of a raging debate is OpenAI, the $300 billion American artificial intelligence research organization best known for developing ChatGPT. Founded in 2015 as a donation-based nonprofit with a mission to build AI for humanity, it created a complex “hybrid capped profit” governance structure in 2019. Then, after a dramatic firing and re-hiring of CEO Sam Altman in 2023 (covered on an earlier episode of Capitalisn't: “Who Controls AI?”), a new board of directors announced that achieving OpenAI's mission would require far more capital than philanthropic donations could provide and initiated a process to transition to a for-profit public benefit corporation. This process has been fraught with corporate drama, including one early OpenAI investor, Elon Musk, filing a lawsuit to stop the process and launching a $97.4 billion unsolicited bid for OpenAI's nonprofit arm.Beyond the staggering valuation numbers at stake here–not to mention OpenAI's open pursuit of profits over the public good–are complicated legal and philosophical questions. Namely, what happens when corporate leaders violate the founding purpose of a firm? To discuss, Luigi and Bethany are joined by Rose Chan Loui, the founding executive director of the Lowell Milken Center on Philanthropy and Nonprofits at UCLA Law and co-author of the paper "Board Control of a Charity's Subsidiaries: The Saga of OpenAI.” Is OpenAI a “textbook case of altruism vs. greed,” as the judge overseeing the case declared? Is AI for everyone, or only for investors? Together, they discuss how money can distort purpose and philanthropy, precedents for this case, where it might go next, and how it may shape the future of capitalism itself.Show Notes:Read extensive coverage of the Musk-OpenAI lawsuit on ProMarket, including Luigi's article from March 2024: “Why Musk Is Right About OpenAI.”Guest Disclosure (provided to The Conversation for an op-ed on the case): The authors do not work for, consult, own shares in, or receive funding from any company or organization that would benefit from this article. This week on Virgo Season, spring is acting real inconsistent and Joyhdae is calling her out: “Fight back, sis!” Meanwhile, Ryan's new body means new clothes, but after one sweater run and a declined Visa, the real trauma happens in the locker room—where a man is wearing absolutely nothing… but sneakers. We wish that was a joke.Ryan shares how he fought for his life in a Ticketmaster queue to secure tickets (this time not for Beyoncé), and what began as a strategic plan to avoid the concert turned into a surprise birthday gift that almost didn't happen—because Ticketmaster loves drama. Also in this episode, we check in on a few of your faves and not-so-faves. Keke Palmer is catching serious heat for giving Jonathan Majors a seat on her podcast, and Black women are letting her know exactly why that was not the move. Eric Adams somehow got his federal case dismissed with prejudice, told us he's still not running as a Democrat, and name-dropped Trump's people at a press conference like we forgot who he's supposed to be.And then there's Cory Booker, who delivered a 25-hour and 5-minute speech to call out the Trump administration and sound the alarm on the past 72 days of political dysfunction, government inaction, and democratic backsliding. It was passionate, overdue, and yes—surprisingly powerful.Meanwhile, Anthony Edwards allegedly paid all 18 years of child support up front, and Twitter's men's section celebrated before reading the fine print. Speaking of celebration—Mariah Carey and Anderson .Paak might be a couple now? We didn't have that on the bingo card either. And then there's The Engagement Swindler. One proposal at a Tyler, the Creator concert opened the floodgates, exposing a real-life serial fiancé with seven kids, unpaid child support, stolen rings, and allegedly a very real marriage already in progress. On the latest episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo steps into a high-concept, near-future world of moral quandaries and psychological pressure with the sci-fi drama "The Assessment." Directed by Fleur Fortuné and starring Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander, and Himesh Patel, the film follows a couple evaluated by the government over seven increasingly intense days to determine whether they're worthy of having a child. Think of a creepy, contained "Children of Men" by way of Ingmar Bergman and Charlie Kaufman. The film recently premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and hits VOD on April 8th, delivering a minimalist but emotionally potent take on societal control, intimacy, and parenthood. To talk through it all, we sat down with both stars to dig into the emotional challenges of the project, their collaborations with Fortuné, and what kind of psychological strength it takes to survive the film's titular assessment.

I have been wanting to do a deep dive on the Bhagavad Gita for years. This rich text is often called the “jewel” of the Mahabharata and can be kind of intimidating to talk about. There is so much to cover. That's why this podcast will be the first in a series about the Bhagavad Gita. We'll start with exploring the profound themes of this amazing text and contrasting it with the Yoga Sutras. We'll talk about how the dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna serves as a guide for navigating our own moral dilemmas. Listen and learn:

Questions? Comments? Text Us!Does God test us? What does obedience to God really mean? In this episode of What's On Our Mind, Scott Langdon and Dr. Jerry L. Martin dive deep into the complex and often misunderstood concepts of obedience, trust, and free will in our relationship with God.Exploring the story of Abraham and Isaac, they discuss whether obedience is simply following commands or if it is something much deeper- a spiritual transformation that brings us into alignment with God's will. Is faith about blind submission, or is it a partnership with the Divine?Through thought-provoking analogies of music, dance, and orchestration, Scott and Jerry reveal how obedience isn't about rigid control but about harmonizing with God's presence in our lives. They also uncover God's ultimate desire- not to demand unquestioning obedience, but to lead us toward fulfillment, awakening, and divine partnership.Join us as we break down misconceptions about faith, question whether God truly “tests” us, and discuss how to discern God's voice in our lives. If you've ever struggled with trusting God's plan or wondered what it means to truly walk in faith, this episode is for you.

In this exploration of Tarot and astrology, we delved into the consequences of success, moral dilemmas, and personal responsibility. Reflecting on personal experiences, the conversation explored how achieving success for the wrong reasons can lead to an even greater sense of entrapment. The Wheel of Fortune and Moon cards played significant roles in illustrating the unpredictability of karma and internal conflicts.
Send us a textPatience is a virtue. The Bible references this about 25 times. And David was a bit late to our scheduled recording time today because of an encounter at his local Tractor Supply store. Against the backdrop of this fresh experience (we deliver on the brand of our podcast name) — still breathless from the hustling irritation he was feeling — David invited Dr. Dave's moral critique. It led us into surprising territory. BTW, consider surprising your special Valentine tomorrow with a renamed body of water… it's trending.
Humanity and the gods of natureDo animals and nature have an ethical life of their own? Must, or should, we extend our morality to non-human entities, or are their limits to notions of ethics?Tune in to hear three world-famous philosophers on ethical issues discuss these questions from their different perspectives: Peter Singer has made a name for himself defending the rights and feelings of all sentient creatures; Slavoj Zizek enjoys turning established ideas on their head; and Nancy Sherman always brings insights from her beloved Aristotle and the stoics. The discussion is at times rigorous and philosophical, and other times provocative and fun. In this episode, we delve into a haunting tale that grapples with the concept of morality and consequence, essentially asking the question: what are we willing to sacrifice for wealth and success? The narrative introduces us to Sir Dominic Sarsfield, a once-illustrious character fallen into despair, who encounters an enigmatic figure that offers him a tempting bargain. We explore themes of desperation, temptation, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness as Sir Dominic weighs his soul against the allure of riches and glory. We journey through Sir Dominic's life, filled with revelry and excess, as he revels in a world of parties, wine, and lavish living. However, his fortune takes a turn when his vices lead him down a precarious path, pushing him toward a fateful decision. By meeting with an otherworldly being in the depths of the renowned Maroa Wood, Sarsfield finds himself ensnared in a deal with unforeseen ramifications. Each moment of frivolity is juxtaposed with the haunting reality of potential loss, as Sir Dominic is urged to consider what will happen when the clock strikes midnight on the final day of February. As the pact unfolds, we witness the gradual corruption of Sir Dominic's character and the toll that his choices take on both his own life and the lives of those around him. The supernatural element is woven seamlessly into the narrative, illustrating the folly of seeking shortcuts to happiness and the dire consequences of forgetting one's moral compass. The tension builds as the deadline looms, culminating in a breakdown of trust and sanity amidst a backdrop of revelry and dread.Ultimately, the story serves as a chilling reminder of the fragility of life and wealth, emphasizing that no amount of gold can shield one from the gravity of their choices. Listeners are left reflecting on the value of integrity versus the seductive nature of temptation, and the ultimate fate that befalls those who seek gain at the expense of their soul. As the chilling conclusion reveals the inescapable consequences of Sir Dominic's decisions, we are compelled to consider our own choices within this timeless tale of old-world terror.

Netflix's Carry-On is here to make you think twice about your next TSA experience. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, this Christmas Eve thriller has everything: blackmail, a dangerous package, and moral dilemmas. Ethan is just your average TSA agent—until a shady traveler, played by Jason Bateman, forces him into a high-stakes decision that could jeopardize lives. This movie blends holiday tension with nail-biting suspense, throwing Ethan into a deadly game where rules are meant to be broken. Whether it's the shocking plot twists or the intense airport chaos, Carry-On is a must-watch for fans of fast-paced thrillers. And as always, we're breaking it all down TruVue-style—spoilers, NSFW jokes, and barbershop banter that'll have you laughing harder than a TSA agent confiscating your oversized lotion. If you've ever wondered how far someone will go when their back's against the wall, this episode is for you. Remember, we bring the barbershop talk to the box office, because it's not about the review—it's the conversation with the crew. We keep it real on the reels, so grab your carry-on luggage (and maybe a stiff drink) and join us for "Bag Check."
Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down with entrepreneur and software pioneer, Marc Andreessen. They discuss the timeline of the woke institutional takeover, the ruinous effects it has had on Western ideology and business, the ways in which AI will shape society, and the immense responsibility we have to instill the future with an ethos and morality that serves human flourishing. Marc Andreessen is a cofounder and general partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. He is an innovator and creator, one of the few to pioneer a software category used by more than a billion people and one of the few to establish multiple billion-dollar companies. Marc co-created the highly influential Mosaic internet browser and co-founded Netscape, which later sold to AOL for $4.2 billion. He also co-founded Loudcloud, which as Opsware, sold to Hewlett-Packard for $1.6 billion. He later served on the board of Hewlett-Packard from 2008 to 2018. Marc holds a B.S. in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Marc serves on the board of the following Andreessen Horowitz portfolio companies: Applied Intuition, Carta, Coinbase, Dialpad, Flow, Golden, Honor, OpenGov, Samsara, Simple Things, and TipTop Labs. He is also on the board of Meta. The myth of the fearless, lethal soldier collapses under a surprising truth: most soldiers in combat do not shoot to kill. Despite rigorous training, many hesitate to pull the trigger, even when their survival depends on it. This isn't due to lack of skill or weaponry but a profound psychological barrier against killing, rooted deeply in human nature. Combat studies have revealed that, throughout history—from ancient warriors to modern soldiers—the reluctance to take life persists. Military training has adapted, but the instinct to preserve life challenges assumptions about warfare, revealing the complex human morality laid bare on the battlefield. → Credits, References, Corrections, and More Home: https://almostcertainlynot.com/ → Support Join our Patreon with the link below.
