Can flossing reduce your risk of a stroke?

Send us a textCan you provide feedback on my podcast (what you like?  what you want more of?  length?  Please answer a few questions here.  Can a simple habit like flossing really reduce your risk of stroke? In this episode, Dr. Bobby unpacks the headlines sparked by a recent presentation at the American Stroke Association's International Conference that claimed regular flossing could reduce stroke risk by 20–50%. Dr. Bobby begins with a refresher on the importance of stroke prevention. From there, he explores the biological plausibility of a connection between oral health and cardiovascular events. While Americans are fairly diligent about brushing (with 90% brushing once daily and 60% brushing twice a day per YouGov data), flossing habits lag significantly (NIH Oral Health Study—highlighting a clear opportunity if the flossing-stroke link is real.Dr. Bobby dives into the study behind the headlines, a new analysis from the long-running Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, which tracked over 6,000 individuals for 25 years. The preliminary finding: regular flossers had significantly lower risk of ischemic and cardioembolic strokes (Study Abstract). Surprisingly, brushing and dental visits showed no significant benefit in this analysis. So why isn't this flossing-stroke connection headline a "five-alarm fire" in medicine? Dr. Bobby explains the limitations: the results were shared via a conference abstract, not a peer-reviewed journal article. Without full access to the data or understanding how many other hypotheses were tested from this large dataset (which has already generated over 2,300 publications), we risk falling into the trap of correlation being mistaken for causation. To further evaluate the credibility of this association, Dr. Bobby introduces the Bradford Hill criteria—nine principles to assess causality in observational studies. While the biological plausibility is strong and the effect size notable, the study fails on criteria like replication, dose-response, and publication rigor (Bradford Hill Overview). In closing, Dr. Bobby affirms the benefits of flossing—not necessarily for stroke prevention, but for better oral health, which is valuable in its own right. He shares his personal oral care routine, including flossing nightly and using a water jet, while reminding listeners to stay evidence-informed in their health decisions.Takeaways Flossing likely improves oral health, but its role in stroke prevention remains unproven. Be cautious with headlines drawn from unpublished conference abstracts—they're a starting point for inquiry, not a reason to change behavior just yet."How to Live Long and Well" at DrBobbyLiveLongAndWell.com.

What Happens If You Stop Brushing Your Teeth

Bright Side

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2024 14:08

What if you stopped brushing your teeth? Would your teeth fall out, or would you be OK? In fact, there is a way to get pearly whites at the end of a year without brushing. It involves taking care of your teeth with some alternative methods. One of them is eating certain foods. Apples are a great choice because they're an alkaline fruit and take the stains off the teeth. Sweet potatoes can help whiten teeth; strawberries contain malic acid, which can help prevent gum inflammation. TIMESTAMPS: Bacteria would accumulate in your mouth 0:58 You would hurt your gums 1:53 Your breath would get stinky 2:52 You might suffer from tooth demineralization 3:59 How to get pearly whites at the end of a year without brushing 4:45 Mouthwash 4:58 Flossing can be extremely effective 6:02 Avoid sugar 6:47 Certain foods can whiten your teeth 7:55 #toothbrushing #whiteteeth #toothwhitening Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: If you don't brush for a day, food particles remain lodged between your teeth, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Over time, this bacteria would spread to your tongue and gums as well. During a year of no brushing, you'd likely be suffering from swollen and tender gums. If your teeth are carrying a ton of bacteria, plaque, and tartar, you can expect your gums to bleed from time to time. Your mouth would smell like that 365 days of the year. There would be no escaping onion or coffee breath or the scent from smoking. Your teeth would be carrying food particles, and that would produce bacteria that is potent in odor. Minerals like calcium and phosphate are necessary to keep your enamel strong and prevent tooth decay. After a year, it's likely that none of your teeth would be too demineralized to actually fall out, but you would be on the way to losing your enamel and the bones that support your teeth. You wouldn't have to worry about bad breath if you used mouthwash. Your breath could stay minty fresh all day! Your mouthwash could also help prevent cavities and fight gum disease if it contains alcohol and chlorhexidine. Flossing is more important than brushing. If you stopped brushing for a long time but continued to floss, you'd save your teeth from any plaque buildup between the teeth and right by the gums. The best way to prevent cavities is not to brush but to avoid eating sugar and other simple carbohydrates. You don't need a toothbrush and whitening toothpaste for your teeth to be pearly white. You simply have to stay away from foods that are acidic and lower your mouth's ph levels and veer toward foods that are high in alkaline content and raise the ph levels. Remember that the safest approach is always to follow the recommendations of the dental community when it comes to taking care of your teeth. According to the ADA, people should brush twice a day. If you thought mycelium networks were fascinating and magical, the body's fascia matrix is truly next level. Today, I'm joined by Bonnie Crotzer, dancer turned fascial flossing guide, to discuss just how interconnected fascia is to our entire being and how we can return it to its optimal state.   Did you know that fascia is an amazing fabric that links everything in the body? Bonnie explains what fascia is and why it's so important (and cool!) in an easy-to-digest way. Her deep knowledge and passion for the body and how it functions is incredible. Since fascia is a conductor of electricity, the more you move your body, the more electricity you make. The science of fascia demonstrates why movement is key to strong mental health and radiant spirit. Fascial flossing is a way to reconfigure fascia back to its healthiest state. This is achieved by engaging your muscles while you elongate, allowing the body to work on a deeper level than just stretching. This is important for the body to build strength and stability for everyone, from the hypermobile to the hyper stiff.  Bonnie encourages self-practice to begin fascia flossing and working with one-on-one practitioners or getting a lymphatic drainage massage as next steps. Caring for your fascia ensures that you maintain good circulation, which means little or no pain in the body, better oxygenation, full nutrient absorption, and adequate waste removal. There are so many benefits across digestion, the immune system and mental health, why not get flossing today?  Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform.  Topics Covered: The function of fascia  Nerves and vasculature in the fascial matrix How fascia works with the nervous system in acupuncture  What is fascial flossing? Which account should you choose, a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) or a Tax-free savings account (TFSA)? This is one of the most common decisions that Canadians must make when it comes to investing, but it will also elicit some of the most passionate responses. RRSPs especially get a lot of undue skepticism, with some even labelling it as a scam. Today we take a deep dive into both of these savings accounts, exploring the downsides and benefits of each, and how to decide which account is right for you based on your savings goals. With the help of Conquest Planning, a specialized, in-depth modelling tool, we look at a range of scenarios incorporating different variables, like income and family size, and break down our analysis regarding the RRSP vs. TFSA decision for each scenario. We discuss key factors to consider, including the basic personal amount tax credit, which allows RRSPs to act as a tax flow-through, and the guaranteed income supplement (GIS), which can impact retirement planning. Our conversation also examines how to approach family size and longevity, as RRSPs become more advantageous with longer lifespans. Join us today to learn about the benefits and flexibility of each of these accounts, the surprising ways RRSPs often outperform TFSAs, and find out which one is right for you! In Podcast By Dr Dad, A Conversation between Dr Gaurav Nigam and Dr Siddharth Jain. Promoting Dental Wellness from Newborns to Toddlers: A Comprehensive Guide Ensuring optimal dental wellness for children is a crucial aspect of their overall health, starting right from birth. Establishing good oral hygiene practices early on not only prevents dental issues but also sets the foundation for lifelong healthy habits. Here's a detailed guide on how to maintain dental wellness from newborns to toddlers. Newborn Stage: Dental care begins even before the first tooth emerges. Parents should clean their newborn's gums daily using a clean, damp cloth or gauze pad. This practice helps remove any bacteria and milk residue, preventing infections and promoting healthy gums. For breastfed babies, it's important to wipe their gums after each feeding. Bottle-fed babies should never be put to bed with a bottle of milk or juice, as prolonged exposure to sugars can cause tooth decay, also known as “baby bottle tooth decay.” Infant Stage (0-12 months): As soon as the first tooth appears, usually around six months, it's time to start using a toothbrush. Choose a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush designed for infants. Brush the baby's teeth twice a day using a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). Avoid using too much toothpaste, as excessive fluoride can lead to dental fluorosis. At this stage, it's also vital to introduce a balanced diet and avoid sugary snacks and drinks. Sugars contribute to the formation of plaque, leading to cavities. Instead, opt for healthy alternatives like fruits and vegetables. Toddler Stage (1-3 years): By the time your child turns one, it's recommended to schedule their first dental visit. Regular dental check-ups are essential for early detection and prevention of any potential issues. The dentist will provide guidance on brushing techniques, fluoride use, and dietary recommendations. Continue brushing your toddler's teeth twice daily, increasing the amount of toothpaste to a pea-sized amount once they turn two. Encourage them to start brushing on their own, but always supervise and assist to ensure proper technique and thorough cleaning. Flossing should begin when your child's teeth start to touch each other. Use gentle motions to avoid injuring their delicate gums. Pediatric dental flossers can make this task easier. Promoting Good Habits: Teaching children the importance of good oral hygiene is a long-term investment. Make brushing and flossing a fun and engaging activity. Use songs, stories, or even apps designed to make dental care exciting for kids. Positive reinforcement, such as praise or small rewards, can also motivate them to develop and maintain these habits. Dietary Considerations: A balanced diet is crucial for dental health. Ensure your child gets plenty of calcium-rich foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt to strengthen their teeth. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, and encourage water as the primary beverage. If juice is given, it should be in moderation and preferably during mealtimes to reduce the risk of tooth decay. Addressing Common Issues: Teething can be a challenging time, causing discomfort and irritability. Offer your baby a clean, chilled teething ring or a damp washcloth to soothe their gums. Avoid teething gels with benzocaine, as they can pose health risks. Another common issue is thumb sucking. While it's a natural reflex, prolonged thumb sucking can affect the alignment of teeth and the shape of the mouth. Gently encourage your child to stop this habit by offering positive reinforcement and providing alternative comfort items. Conclusion: Maintaining dental wellness from newborns to toddlers requires consistent effort and education.
