And moderate winds will be out of the southwest gusting up to 20 miles per hour. The Wichita City Council took the first step toward reducing traffic lanes on downtown’s primary business street, with an eye toward creating a more bikeable and fun Douglas Avenue.

In its first meeting after a contentious election, the Wichita City Council is being asked to approve millions of dollars in improvements, and incentives, for some of the mayor’s signature projects.

The day will begin with wind chills in the teens and 20s. Wichita Mayor-elect Brandon Whipple said he sees his election victory over Mayor Jeff Longwell as a win for the people of the city. He said they are fed up with backdoor deals, favoritism, and influence peddling at City Hall.

A special committee recommended the Legislature look to Ohio as a guide, where medical use is legal.

In Wichita, city employees can be fired for accepting gifts, travel, or meals from anyone doing business with the city, according to the city’s code of ethics. But Wichita city council members don’t have to follow the same ethics code, and are free to take unlimited gifts. Other cities in the region have tighter policies.

A Wichita mother and her boyfriend are in jail after authorities found her 2-year-old son bruised and dead Sunday morning. 24-year-old Stephanie Aviles is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated child endangerment.

A Wichita Eagle investigation has revealed that Wichita Mayor, Jeff Longwell, steered what could become the largest contract in the city’s history to his political supporters and friends. The city plans to spend about $524 million to build a new plant to treat drinking water.
