Colt and David sit down with singer/songwriter Hannah Ellis.  Curb Records recording artist Hannah Ellis' journey – and world – is one all can feel at home in. The Campbellsville, Kentucky-native's voice - a mix of favorite flannel, sparkling pink wine and welcome - is the friend we always wanted. Whether pouring from a car radio or your phone, the act named to Rolling Stone's “Artist To Watch” list reminds you big leaps often come as a series of small steps when no one is looking. Having paid for her University of Kentucky degree with her full-ride scholarship, she – with the full support of her family – started chasing her dreams. Like so many, that meant a trip to The Voice on NBC, a self-financed EP, and moving to Nashville to begin the endless rounds of writers nights, meetings, making friends, and trying to find your way. Hannah paid her dues, kept her focus and kept moving towards something she was sure she felt and knew was right. The fresh-faced songwriter has since written songs recorded by artists, and been featured as a vocalist on songs, spanning multiple genres, including: Russell Dickerson, Carly Pearce, for KING & COUNTRY, Danielle Bradbery, and Francesca Battestelli. The magnetic artist, who made her Grand Ole Opry debut on Sept 28th, 2023, has toured with Gavin DeGraw, Dwight Yoakam, Carly Pearce, Martina McBride, Billy Currington, Jake Owen and many others, and has toured as part of the CMT “Next Women of Country” Tour.Website: www.hannahellismusic.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/hannahellismusicInstgram: www.instagram.com/hannahgreyellisTwitter (X): www.twitter.com/hannahgreyellisTikTok: www.tiktok.com/@hannahgreyellisYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/hannahgreyellis/videosSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2X0AxEXX0KGKIhMxo1WvjQSend us a textSupport the Show.Check out our socials and follow us!Facebook: www.facebook.com/TwangTownPodcastInstagram: www.instagram.com/TwangTownPodTwitter: www.twitter.com/TwangTownPodWe would love your support to continue to bring listeners amazing content!Cash App: www.cash.app/$TwangTownPodBuzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2232176/support

And The Writer Is...with Ross Golan

Today's guest is a bona fide hit-maker whose worked across all corners of the industry. Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee this songwriter got their start playing saxophone in church and with bands on Beale Street before being discovered by a talent manager. He soon signed a publishing deal and began his career as a successful songwriter and producer. With credits that span Kane Brown's "Heaven" to Charlie Puth's "One Call Away," this writer is one of the most formidable up-and-coming talents in Nashville and beyond. He is among the writers behind Billy Currington's "It Don't Hurt Like it Used To," Sugarland's smash hit "Stuck Like Glue" and Rob Thomas' single "Someday." In addition to his feature on Tim McGraw's "Way Down," he has collaborated with Keith Urban on both "Never Comin' Down" and "My Wave." Named to Variety's 2018 Hitmakers list, he has also worked with Jason Derulo, Meghan Trainor, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Lopez, Nelly and more. His roots in gospel, jazz, R&B and soul developed into an early career in hip-hop, but his gift for storytelling and love of organic instrumentation led to a natural transition into country music. Now, with a transcendent style perfectly suited to the times, he's ready to stand on his own as a country artist. His debut radio single "Good Love" and subsequent EP The Rest Of US are fitting introductions to the man behind the music. And The Writer Is…Shy Carter! Hosted on Acast. This week, songs and stories from a trio of Grammy award winning world class songwriters recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, commentary from these three musical musketeers. Featured on this show are world renowned songwriter Roger Cook, award winning Memphis singer-songwriter Keith Sykes, and singer-songwriter and session musician Shawn Camp. Born in Bristol, England, Roger Cook is recognized as one of the world's greatest modern songwriters. During his lengthy international songwriting career, Roger has had more than 80 top 30 hits, including classics such as Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart – Gene Pitney, Something Tells Me – Cilla Black, Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress – The Hollies, and You've Got Your Troubles – The Fortunes. However, Roger is perhaps best known for his song I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing, which was recorded by the New Seekers and became the theme song for a long-running series of Coca-Cola commercials. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Cook_(songwriter) Once upon a time in the summer of 1967, Keith Sykes hitchhiked to the Newport Folk Festival and saw Arlo Guthrie perform “Alice's Restaurant.” In the fall of that year he got a copy of the album, learned the whole song and sang it at a Holiday Inn in Charleston, South Carolina. They hired him on the spot for a regular gig playing music in the hotel. In the more than 40 years that followed, he would become a troubadour and storyteller, a massively successful songwriter with more than 100 songs recorded by artists as diverse as Rosanne Cash and George Thorogood. He would tour every corner of America and play in just about every conceivable kind of venue, appear on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits, and host songwriter nights on Memphis' legendary Beale Street with many of music's most talented songwriters. He would join Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, tour the country and record the Volcano album – the title track for which he co-wrote with Jimmy. - http://www.keithsykes.com/ Some careers can be described with a couple of words but Shawn Camp's isn't one of them. A bold and distinctive singer and a songwriter who's provided material for artists ranging from Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury and Ricky Skaggs to Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Porter Wagoner, Loretta Lynn and Brooks & Dunn with hits such as “Two Pina Coladas” (Garth Brooks,) “Nobody But Me” (Blake Shelton,) “Would You Go With Me” (Josh Turner,) “River Of Love” (George Strait,) and Billy Currington's hit single “Love Done Gone.)  Along with being a hit writer, he is a gifted multi-instrumentalist who's played as a touring/recording musician with everyone from Jerry Reed, Trisha Yearwood, Shelby Lynn and Alan Jackson to the Osborne Brothers, Guy Clark and John Prine.  Camp also co-produced a compilation tribute album for his friend and hero Guy Clark which was #1 on the Americana Charts for several weeks in the spring of 2012 and voted Americana Album Of The Year 2012. - https://shawncamp.com/bio In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1981 archival recording of Ozark original Buddy Lancaster performing the tune “Fire on the Mountain,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater explores regional variations of the traditional folk song “Going to the West.”

Growing up, he was intimidated by the sheer number of people coming to Nashville to become singers or songwriters. So, he went to college and earned a degree in psychology. After working ten years as a youth minister, Marty decided to change careers. Trouble was, he didn't know what he wanted to be when he grew up. He fumbled around for several years, doing odd jobs and trying to decide on a direction for his life. Finally, a book he read helped him realize that what he REALLY wanted to be was a songwriter. He had run into Gordon Payne, a member of the Crickets, while working one of his odd jobs. Gordon helped him re-write one of his songs and demo it in a Nashville studio. Marty was hooked. He threw caution to the wind, quit the other jobs and began writing full-time. 10 #1 songs and more than 135 cuts later, Marty has become one of the most accomplished writers in Nashville with notable hit singles such as "Fire It Up” by Joe Cocker, “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven” by Kenny Chesney, “Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right” and “Let Me Down Easy” by Billy Currington. His songs have been recorded by numerous other artists including: Blake Shelton, George Strait, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, The Plain White T's, The Oak Ridge Boys, Don Williams, Johnny Reid, Billy Ray Cyrus and Big & Rich. Marty's self-professed “greatest achievement” in his songwriting career to date was knocking artist Psy (“Gangnam Style”) out of the #1 spot in South Korea and winning “Song of the Year” honors for South Korea and all of Asia with his song “Bounce” recorded by Cho Yong Pil. Marty currently resides in Nashville TN with his wife Candy.  He is a partner and co-founder of SongTown.Com and is a writer for Sail Away Songs. NOTABLE CUTS:“Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right” – Billy Currington  2 Week #1 Single – Platinum Single“Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven” – Kenny Chesney  2 Week #1 Single“Let Me Down Easy” – Billy Currington  #1 Single“Fire It Up” – Joe Cocker and Johnny Reid  #1 Single in Canada – Johnny Reid  #1 Single in Germany – Joe Cocker“Bounce” – Cho Yong Pil  #1 Single in South Korea – Asian Song of The Year 2013“Songs Like This” – Carrie Underwood  Double Platinum Album“Cirque Dans La Rue” and “Killer” – The Plain White T's“While You Loved Me” – Rascal Flatts  #7 Single – Double Platinum Album“Could It Be” – Charlie Worsham  #12 Single – Highest Debut Single of 2013“Dirt” – Dean Brody – Top Ten Single – Canada“Immortal” – Saving Jane“Doing It To Country Songs” – Blake Shelton“Did It For The Party” – Big And Rich“Harder” – Steep Canyon Rangers“Bernadine”, “Bohemian” and “Around Like Vinyl” – Songs From The Road Band BRAND RESOURCES:Evergreen Podcast Network - EvergereenPodcasts.comThoughts That Rock – ThoughtsThatRock.comCertified Rock Star - CertifiedRockStar.comBooky Call - https://www.bookycall.comBooky Call - Book Review App on Apple - Apps.Apple.comBooky Call - Book Review App on Google Play - Play.Google.Com Service That Rocks: TCreate Unforgettable Experiences  and Turn Customers into Fans (Jim Knight) - ServiceThatRocksBook.comLeadership That Rocks: Take Your Brand's Culture to Eleven and Amp Up Results (Jim Knight) - LeadershipThatRocksBook.comCulture That Rocks: How to Revolutionize Your Company's Culture (Jim Knight) – CultureThatRocks.comBlack Sheep: Unleash the Extraordinary, Awe-Inspiring, Undiscovered You (Brant Menswar) - FindYourBlackSheep.comRock ‘n Roll With It: Overcoming the Challenge of Change (Brant Menswar) – RocknRollWithIt.comCannonball Kids' cancer – CannonballKidscancer.orgBig Kettle Drum - BigKettleDrum.comSpectacle Photography (Show/Website Photos) – SpectaclePhoto.comJeffrey Todd “JT” Keel (Show Music) - JT Keel

While attending college, Van Slee would play in local venues like Tropical Grill, The Florida Cracker, Market 48, and Monte McGill's, where he would entertain the townspeople and tourists alike. In 2018, Donny left his hometown to study at Palmer College of Chiropractic, located in Daytona Beach, Florida where he continued to perform live every weekend. Donny finally discovered Nashville, TN while road tripping from Florida to Colorado to start a chiropractic internship. After hours of emails and phone calls, the “World-Famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge” decided to grant him an audition. So, while Donny was driving back from Colorado to Florida to graduate Chiropractor school, he auditioned and they hired him after performing his first song, “Good Direction” by Billy Currington. He left Nashville the next morning, drove to Florida to receive his doctorate, kissed mom and dad goodbye, and drove back to Nashville. One year later, he is a front-man for multiple bands, performing every weekend on main stages and rooftops. When not on stage, Dr. Don is seeing patients, writing songs, or recording with his buddy Tanner Carlson who he met while performing downtown on lower broadway. Tanner has produced ‘Path of Love,” “Today,” “In the Bucket with All the Stickers on It,” and “Spencer's Song.”

In this episode, I use songs from Lanie's country music playlist to describe how I hope to be thought of felt about by someone who loves me. I hope this musical discussion elicits  thoughts in your own mind of what it is exactly you are looking for and how you hope to be treated. The first song I dissect is She's Everything by Brad Paisley.  A few talking points are:It's nice to be appreciated for what we look like in our natural state. It's exhausting putting our best foot forward, appearance-wise all the time. I want to be with someone who expects me to have a full spectrum of emotions and wants me to express both the highs and the lows.  I want to be understood.I want to be there for my person and make the people around me feel good and know that they are loved.I love BIG. I have a big heart and my feelings run deep. It's important to me that the person I'm with knows that if I'm mad, it's for good reason. The flip side is also true, I show my love loudly too. While I understand the ebb and flow of longterm romantic relationships, I love to be around people who dote on their significant others. I mean, bubble baths and wine just make me feel all warm inside.Growing old with someone sounds good to me. I don't think it's ever too late. The second country song I talk through is Billy Currington's song, Details. This song is about how this guy recognizes everything about the woman he adores. He seems to notice and pay attention to all of her attributes. I talk about how this song reminds me of a  recent dating relationship  I was in.  I felt noticed and adored but not necessarily understood. I think there's the surface level of recognizing preferences and interests and then there's the deeper level of truly understanding and balancing their flaws with their gifts. The third country song I discuss is Zac Brown Band, Whatever it is.  This song makes me feel flutters and fireworks. It's not a deep, sentimental song but it has a great vibe. It reminds me of when I met a guy at an event recently who kept telling me that he felt drawn to me and he couldn't explain why. Too bad he was married (See Ep53 Easy Targets). The last song is like an inspirational theme song for me. It's The Good Ones by Gabby Barrett. We can hope for all of the checklist items, but at the end of the day, simple qualities like solid and steady sound pretty great. After years of being alone, online dating, and getting hurt, it's easy to be discouraged. It can feel like the "good ones" are all committed and the single ones aren't what we're looking for. This song gives me the feeling of hopefulness that there are good people out there.Up Next, Ep55 RED FLAGS!Support the show

Adding insult to injury, the current historic heat wave has also resulted in the worst air quality in Central Texas in a decade. Meanwhile, ERCOT's chief is concerned about the ability of Texas' older power generators to keep up with the ongoing record demand for power this summer. Austin Public Health declares that monkeypox has achieved community spread in Austin. Meanwhile, COVID-19 risk remains at Medium level for Travis County, and hospitalizations continue tracking upward - as of yesterday at 159, up from 68 one month ago. Friends of an elderly cyclist who died in a hit-and-run crash in March are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. The director of Austin's Office of Civil Rights remains on paid leave following an investigation that appears to confirm employee allegations of a hostile work environment. Trash collection schedules have been moved earlier to allow workers to avoid the worst of the afternoon heat - we're now asked to have containers on the curb by 5:30am. A new poll commissioned by the Austin Monitor shows deep division in Austin over police spending and public safety, and that Austinites are dissatisfied with local government - and keen to vote in November. Lawyers for Alex Jones want to bar any mention of white supremacism or extremism from the cupcoming trial to determine how much he owes the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims whom he defamed. Meanwhile, his ex-wife Kelly Jones claims to have "insider info" which she's volunteering to the House Select Committee on the January 6 insurrection. A stretch of West Sixth Street, roughly the block east of Clark's Oyster Bar, is being eyeballed for a vertical mixed-use makeover. Our Thursday weekend live music outlook: Friday shows include Brandi Carlile and Lucius at Waterloo Park, Purity Ring at ACL Live, Billy Currington at Round Rock Amp, and the Roky Erickson Birthday and Ice Cream Social at Hotel Vegas. Saturday catch the Rebirth Brass Band at the Far Out Lounge, Atmosphere at Stubb's, Coheed and Cambria at Waterloo Amphitheater, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd at ACL Live. And extreme heat continues, with a high of 105 coming today - but with a welcome chance of rain, most likely between 3pm and 10pm today.
