Andy makes the case for why Wimbledon may be Novak Djokovic's best remaining shot at a major, Ben Shelton's win over Fritz, and Majchrzak beating De Minaur for the title. Plus, Donna Vekić's title run, Emma Raducanu's scheduling debate, Barbora Krejčíková as the ultimate unseeded threat, and a deep dive into Serena's doubles return and whether singles is next. Send us Fan MailHi everybody and welcome to Attendance Bias. I am your host Brian Weinstein. Today, we continue our miniseries of previewing each venue on Phish's 2026 summer tour with an old favorite: Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Maryland. We are at the mid-point of the tour, having just visited Walnut Creek, and on the way to Lakeview in Syracuse for a one night stop after these two shows.Today's guests to give us the inside scoop on MPP should be familiar voices to anyone listening; we have familiar friends today: JW and Skinny from the Stub Me Down podcast. As you've come to hear, these guys are not only intelligent and experienced Phish fans, but they both live nearby the venue, within a half hour or, in Skinny's case, 8 minutes exactly. Together, we review the history of the legendary venue, its connection to the jamband scene and, of course, our favorite memories of seeing Phish there since 1998, although JW is quick to point out that the band's first performance on that stage was in 1992 opening for Santana. But let's hear it from Skinny and JW as we prepare for Phish's 2-night run, their first at MPP since 2022, on July 18 and 19, 2026.Support the show

In this episode, we meet Genesis, a 31-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who shares her journey from a high-control upbringing to finding authentic peace. Born into the organization after her grandmother was recruited during a time of extreme grief in 1960s Cuba, Genesis describes a childhood dominated by "fear and anxiety" regarding the impending apocalypse. She details the devastating impact of the organization's shunning policy, which saw her 16-year-old brother cast out and his parents told to "pretend he died," leaving Genesis as the "replacement child" under intensified surveillance and bizarre modesty rules involving everything from sandals to jean shorts in swimming pools. Genesis also opens up about her early marriage to a "JW dream man"—a relationship born more out of a desire for escape than true compatibility—and the subsequent institutional betrayal she faced when he cheated. From being pressured by elders to "forgive and forget" his infidelity to the "miraculous" relief she felt upon walking away during the COVID-19 pandemic, her story is a masterclass in reclaiming agency. Today, she deconstructs the toxic narrative that success outside the cult is merely a "blessing from Satan," proving instead that true happiness comes from the hard work of self-care and autonomy. Key Takeaways Exploitative Recruitment: The organization systematically teaches members to look for "pain points," such as death in the family or isolation in foreign countries, to bait vulnerable people with the promise of a "resurrection hope". The "Death" of the Living: Shunning is used as a punitive tool for control; Genesis's mother was explicitly told to "pretend like [her son] died" after he was disfellowshipped at age 16 for refusing to rat out his friends. Control via "Appearance": Modesty rules are often arbitrary and based on the whims of local elders, such as banning sandals to avoid "provocative toes" or requiring women to wear jean shorts over swimsuits. Financial Abandonment: By discouraging higher education and retirement savings, the organization often leaves elderly members penniless, sometimes even encouraging them to leave their homes to the Watchtower instead of their own children. Reprogramming Happiness: Recovery requires unlearning the "survivor's guilt" associated with success, as members are conditioned to believe that any good fortune outside the group is a trap set by Satan. Direct Quotes "I am truly living for me, myself, and I. And as some people may say that it's selfish, but it's not. It is so nice to be selfish and put yourself first".
Send us Fan MailHi everybody and welcome to Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Before we get started with today's episode, I just want to remind everyone that if you enjoy the podcast, you can show your support by leaving a rating and review of it wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit www.buymeacoffee.com/attendancebias and donate anything you can to keep the podcast going. Now, onto today's episode.Today is a preview of a preview. Leading up to Phish's summer tour last year, 2025, I thought it would be fun to do a deep dive into two new venues Phish was playing: Forest Hills Stadium in New York City, and Folsom Field in Boulder. I keep an eye on the online Phish community on Twitter, Bluesky, Facebook, Reddit, etc. and it seemed like fans had the most questions about those venues. I was lucky to find people who were willing to come on the show and pretty much answer a Q&A about each venue. It was kind of the same format as a regular Attendance Bias episode, except the episode was about a venue and not a particular show. Then, a friend recommended that I shouldn't stop at Forest Hills and Folsom; I should record an episode for every venue on the 2025 tour. I loved doing it, and so that's what happened. I was very proud of it, and by the end, I felt like I could hop on tour at any moment and know everything I needed to know about any given venue.Once Phish announced their 2026 summer tour this past February, I felt that impulse to record another “Venue Preview” miniseries–you know when you feel that feeling that says: “This is going to be difficult, it's going to take a lot of work, but I really, really, really want to do it?” Once I saw their tour, that's the feeling I felt. I immediately went to work, contacting friends, working through a few false starts, and doing a ton of research of places I've never visited–sure, I could tell you the basics of seeing a show at Merriweather Post Pavilion, but the Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia may as well be in Taiwan. Plus, I had to think of ways to preview the most familiar Phish venues: how exactly does one give a heads up about seeing Phish at Madison Square Garden or Deer Creek? I had my work cut out for me.Regardless, the next 10 weeks of Attendance Bias episodes will sound like that: The 2026 Summer Tour Venue Preview Series. Now that the 3 weekends at the Sphere are done, here are Phish's next stops, along with the guests who will help tell us about each venue and city:*July 7 and 8 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin with Mike Lancaster*July 10, 11, and 12, at Deer Creek with Ben Karle*July 14 and 15 at the Enmarket Arena in Savannah, GA with my friends Earth and Jessie*July 17 at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, NC, with Bryan Rodgers*July 18 and 19 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland with Skinny and JW from the Stub Me Down podcast*July 21 at the Lakeview Amphitheater in Syracuse, NY with Beth Ann Kempf*July 22-29 at Madison Square Garden with Megan Glionna*July 31 and August 1 at Fenway Park with Dave Hamilton*Finally, September 4-6 at Dick's with Stacie LeddenWhether or not you're seeing a show at any given venue on the tour, I would recommend listening to each episode. It gives you a flavor of what it's like to see Phish at that venue and what it's like to be in that city. I loved it.I do what to take a moment to thank every guest I just named for being generous with their time and their knowledge. Trent opens up about what life was really like inside the JW community: the social dynamics, control mechanisms, family pressures, and the personal cost of questioning or leaving. We also dive into how he “woke up,” his healing process, and the story behind starting cult.ture with Derek to create space for honest conversations about high-control groups, belief, manipulation, and recovery. Here is the Sunday School lesson I taught this Sunday. Jehovah's Witnesses argue that Jesus died on an upright stake with no crossbeam. His hands were nailed together above his head. This is because the Greek words stauros and xulon only mean one piece of timber. They're actually right about what those words literally mean. Does that mean Jesus didn't die on a cross? Let's look at some evidence from the Bible and historical works before Constantine that strongly suggest a cross beam.Sources Cited:"Did Jesus Die on a Cross?" In this episode, we sit down with Elizabeth, a 31-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who shares her journey as a fifth-generation member of the organization. Raised in a strict household where her father's history as a "Bethelite" set a high bar for spiritual performance, Elizabeth describes a childhood defined by "The Paradise Binder"—a homemade book of cutout publication pictures designed to program young minds before they could even read. From the pressure to "tally" scriptures at the Kingdom Hall to the harrowing experience of being physically removed from a car at age 12 for wearing mascara, Elizabeth exposes the intense surveillance and performance culture that dictated her early life. The narrative takes a deeply personal turn as Elizabeth recounts her "double life" in high school, her marriage to a non-Witness named Chris, and the traumatic miscarriage she suffered while navigating the stress of being disfellowshipped. She discusses the "death by a thousand cuts" that led to her awakening, sparked by everything from bizarre "bunker" videos at conventions to reading about the similarities between Witnesses and Mormons. Now "soft shunned," Elizabeth reflects on the peace she has found in her own skin, the importance of choice, and the relief of no longer having to view the world through a black-and-white lens. Key Takeaways The "Bethel" Standard: Growing up as the child of a former Bethelite meant Elizabeth's family life was an endless behind-the-scenes tour of spiritual hierarchy, where "spiritual things" always overrode personal milestones, including weddings. Performance-Based Love: Elizabeth's father measured her worth through her participation in meetings; she describes "graduating" from looking at pictures to "tally time," where she was expected to keep a physical count of scriptures and comments to earn parental approval. Institutional Inhospitality: The organization's treatment of Elizabeth's non-Witness husband, Chris, was exceptionally harsh, with elders comparing his presence at the Kingdom Hall to an ancient Bible account of people who were "worthy of death". Logical Deconstruction: Her exit was fueled by a written list of over 20 logical and scriptural questions—ranging from the lack of financial transparency to the hypocrisy of the "prodigal son" vs. modern shunning—that the organization simply could not answer. The Power of Choice: After years of being "voluntold" how to spend every hour, Elizabeth now finds the most beauty in the simple ability to choose her own friends, career, and beliefs based on her authentic self rather than a monthly report slip. Direct Quotes "You're a JW 24/7, a Jehovah is not what you are, it's who you are". "It's about results, right? Type A results to some degree". After over a decade of navigating a high-control upbringing and a complex reinstatement process, she now lives authentically with her husband and son, focusing on building a life defined by choice rather than indoctrination. You will have to wait until the back end because it's no lead story, but ESPN star Stephen A. Smith finally took the bait from new conservative Christian Jason Whitlock. The host of a Blaze podcast has a long history of ruining everything in his wake but appears to have figured it all out and Stephen A isn't buying it. I want to believe in JW so badly, but as we could be on the same page after all his mistreatment of others, I'm not sure. I'm on Jason's side here, sort of. But there's a lot of history and I will tell some of it. Jackson County tries to repurpose the Truman Sports Complex, the KS Gov has a bill on her desk she has a problem signing. If you pay 1% in Kansas City earnings, do you deserve a vote? The IOC is all in with Trump and now California has to accept no transgenders or send the Olympics in 2028 to Texas. The Royals are set and Salvy is now a platoon player. And an 8th grader in Pennsylvania has a perfect bracket and doesn't watch hoops.

Since the mid 1900s Jehovah's Witnesses have had a ban on blood transfusions. They would take biblical commands to "abstain from blood" literally even though the commands were about how to handle blood from something that was dead, not about using blood to save something that was alive. And when they needed a potentially live saving blood transfusion they would deny it. We all carried around "No Blood" cards in our wallets and purses, little legal documents to speak for us if we were unable to do so. No Blood meant NO BLOOD. People died for their stance. Elders (leading men) in congregations were appointed to Hospital Liaison Committees to come in as enforcers when you were in the hospital to make sure that you did what you were told under the penalty of social death (shunning) if you didn't do as you were commanded. In the year 2000 Jehovah's Witnesses were given permission by their leaders, a small group of men in New York known as the Governing Body, to take minor blood fractions derived from four major blood components. So they were told that if other people gave blood, something that Jehovah's Witnesses would never do to help anyone else, they could take those fractions derived from the generous donations of outsiders. I was 23 years old then and I didn't understand where it ever said in the bible that blood fractions were allowed, but I wanted to live like anyone else would want to, so I gladly checked boxes on my little No Blood but kinda blood if it's fractional card so that I would indeed receive more help. I knew it wasn't biblical because if we were fundamentally going to apply what was written in such a literal way, then I could no more have blood fractions than I could have fornication fractions or adultery fractions or commit some murder fractions, but hey, I wanted to live. It's now 26 years later. Today in a historic moment that was published in a 16 minute video that focused on other things, the last 5 minutes had an announcement. Right before their annual "Special Talk" that is to be held this Sunday, and just two weeks or so before their annual "Memorial" celebration that is the biggest event on the JW calendar, they snuck in an announcement that autologous blood transfusions, or transfusions of your own stored blood, would now be allowed. Now, they never said the word transfusion because they're manipulative cunts in a death cult, but they gave their members permission to use their own minds to decide how they used their own blood. No, they still can't take blood from anyone else. So if a JW is in a car wreck and needs blood, they still can't take a blood transfusion from someone else if needed. But if they have some sort of odd preplanned event, they could potentially store some of their own blood, likely at great financial cost, to be used in their own care. Of course, they'd never donate to help anyone else. Help is for me, not for thee. It took 26 years for them to STILL NOT MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION. They are telling members now that they can take a transfusion, of their own blood. So whereas it was previously stated that transfusions were like "eating blood" by ingesting it intravenously and therefore the transfusing itself was wrong, they are now allowed to essentially eat their own blood, just not someone else's. Yeah, that's a gross way of thinking about it, but that's Jehovah's Witnesses theology. They can now take fractions from outsiders and whole blood from themselves. I'm sure that they're trying to wait out the old timers and create change over generations to eventually get rid of this policy. They know it's evil. They know that countless people have died. Mom's after or during childbirth. People that need heart surgery. People with cancer that need surgery. Those that are in bad car accidents or other emergent situations. The Governing Body would therefore be bloodguilty for the lives lost at the hand of their evil policies and their refusal to do the right thing. Instead of making the change that we all know they're going to eventually make, to just allow transfusions, they will drag this out for more decades to put the older folks in a position where due to sunk cost they feel they cannot leave and to throw a bone to younger folks to keep them from leaving due to their insane policies. But HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE????? And where was the apology in the announcement for getting it wrong and costing more lives? "We are not embarrassed about 'adjustments' that are made; nor is an apology needed for not getting it 'exactly right' previously. We understand: this is how Jehovah operates." -Jeffrey Winder, annual meeting October 2023 Support the show and get bonuses as well by donating to the cause on our Patreon page, Patreon.com/shunned Are you struggling in some area of life? Some of the NYTimes' finest crosswords were created by university students. For example, consider, oh, say, today's, by Western University students Matt Proulx and Jeffrey Martinovic. The theme is slick (which should resonate as hilarious as soon as you've sussed out that theme), the grid very colorful, and the clues perfect for a Sunday, with just a bit of bite. Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comToday I'm honored to introduce you to: Brilliant and renowned American stand-up comedian, Emmy Award and Peabody Award Winner, podcast host and co-host, content creator, writer, wearer and finder of hilarious costumes, former GATE kid, loving husband to a dolphin, whistleblower to whistleblowers, survivor advocate, and someone I'm honored to call a friend: Kurt Metzger A comedian who turned personal rebellion into a beacon of unfiltered truth, Kurt's early life was anything but ordinary. Born in Ohio, he was raised in the Jehovah's Witness faith where he was ordained as a minister at age 17. Diving headfirst into stand-up, Kurt honed his craft in the gritty clubs of Philadelphia and New York, where his sharp wit and no-holds-barred style quickly set him apart in the industry. Kurt doesn't just write; he performs - showcasing his mastery of observational comedy laced with dark humor, tackling everything from politics to human folly. In addition to doing stand-up he also hosts his own podcast on YouTube and co-hosts with Jimmy Dore on The Jimmy Dore Show. A couple years ago, I crossed paths with Kurt on social media and learned that Kurt wasn't merely a fan of survivor testimonies - he was devouring them, using every raw testimony to finally piece together the puzzle of his own upbringing and defect from the Jehovah's Witness cult that had shaped (and scarred) his childhood. Those same accounts also helped paint a bigger picture of why the JW's may have the largest settlement in history against them for covering up sexual abuse crimes. On his most recent appearance on Joe Rogan, Kurt even arrived dressed as the infamous MK ULTRA scumbag John C. Lilly - the dolphin-obsessed "scientist" survivors like J.R. Sweet have named as a programmer and abuser, talked about MONARCH and mind control on the show, brought and showed JR Sweet's incredible memoir, “Mormon Monarch” on the podcast, and left a signed copy of JR's book for Rogan after the podcast. What I love about Kurt is that he chooses advocacy over approval, values justice more than likes, and truth more than comfort. He delivers the hardest realities wrapped in his signature blend: razor-sharp comedy, biting sarcasm, gut-punch honesty - and laughter that disarms just enough for the truth to sink deep, refusing to fade when the jokes end. Today, Kurt has become a force of nature, a towering voice for survivors. He befriends them, amplifies their testimonies, shares their work, and fights publicly in ways few have the guts to match. In an era where even seasoned journalists and hosts hesitate to utter "MK ULTRA" or "crimes against humanity," Kurt sprinted toward the fire the instant he understood its scale - and that it's still burning.CONNECT WITH KURP: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kurtmetzgercomedyIG: https://www.instagram.com/kurtmetzgercomedy/X: https://x.com/kurtmetzgerCONNECT WITH EMMA:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@imaginationpodcastofficialRumble: https://rumble.com/c/TheImaginationPodcastEMAIL: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.com OR standbysurvivors@protonmail.comMy Substack: https://emmakatherine.substack.com/BUY ME A COFFEE: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/theimaginationVENMO: @emmaSupport the show

Episode 2.86In this episode, Michael and Zach apply the same standard used in the Mormonism discussion to another major movement: Jehovah's Witnesses. The question is not about sincerity or moral seriousness. It is about theology. Does Jehovah's Witness doctrine align with historic, creedal Christianity—or does it depart from it at a foundational level? We examine official Watchtower and JW.org sources on authority, the Trinity, the nature of the Holy Spirit, and the identity of Jesus Christ. Jehovah's Witnesses explicitly reject Nicene Trinitarianism, deny the full deity of Christ, identify Jesus with Michael the Archangel, and describe the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force. Using their own New World Translation, we walk through key biblical texts—including Isaiah 42–48, John 1, John 17, Philippians 2, and Hebrews 1—to evaluate whether these claims cohere with Scripture. We also address distinctive teachings on salvation, the 144,000, the new birth, organizational exclusivity, and the nature of the soul. The cumulative question becomes unavoidable: if the identity of God, the person of Christ, and the structure of salvation are redefined, does the movement remain within Christianity—or does it constitute a separate religion using Christian vocabulary? The episode concludes by clarifying that the issue is not tone or intention, but doctrinal definition. By classical Christian standards, the differences are structural, not secondary.Find our videocast here: https://youtu.be/qb61zxXnEpwMerch here: https://take-2-podcast.printify.me/Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/reakt-music/deep-stoneLicense code: 2QZOZ2YHZ5UTE7C8Find more Take 2 Theology content at http://www.take2theology.com

In what is more of a rarity these days, Skinny and JW settled into the OG format of Stub Me Down Podcast S7 E5, with JW pulling a stub from his first Phish show in 1998. An incredible setlist (that he knew nothing about in the moment) set the stage for an all-consuming and lifetime obsession. Skinny has heard these stories before, but supposedly did some research on a couple of tunes anyway! Perhaps this episode will bode well for a Phish return to Columbia, Maryland this summer. We can eat crabs at Merriweather Post! Thanks for listening!
