Text a Message to the ShowToday is a crime history episode on the BTK serial killer, Dennis Rader.  Rader is known to have committed at least ten murders between 1974 and 1991, communicating with the media about his crimes but not getting caught.  He called himself BTK, for "bind, torture, kill," and had disappeared for 13 years when suddenly he began communicating with the media and the police again.  This is the story of how he got caught. My guest today is Dana Gouge, who was a homicide detective at the Wichita Police Department.  This interview is going to cover the investigation from 2003 to 2005 which led to Dana being the detective to actually handcuff one of America's most famous serial killers.Music is by Brian Bolger Hey Chaplain Podcast Episode 110Tags:Serial Killer, BTK Killer, CODIS, Cold Case, Detective, DNA, Evidence, FBI, History, Investigations, Journalists, KBI, Murder, Police, Profilers, Task Forces, Wichita, KansasSupport the showThanks for Listening! Domestic Dispute Leads to Shooting Outside South Wichita Elementary School

A shooting outside Cessna Elementary School in South Wichita stemmed from a domestic dispute between a husband and wife, authorities confirmed. The couple was dropping off their children for class when the altercation escalated. According to Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter, a Lyft driver had brought the family to the school when the 46-year-old husband allegedly pulled out a gun and shot his 30-year-old wife in the chest. The couple's children had already entered the school when the incident occurred just before 9:15 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing the woman running toward the school for help, with her husband chasing her. A sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene and saw the man pointing the gun at his wife's head. In an attempt to protect the woman, the deputy fired his weapon, shooting the suspect. The Wichita Police Department reported that after the suspect placed the gun to his wife's head, the deputy ordered him to drop the weapon. When he refused and made threatening statements, the deputy fired twice. A brief struggle ensued as the deputy attempted to disarm and apprehend the suspect. Both the husband and wife were transported to the hospital with critical injuries. The husband was reportedly in "code blue" condition, indicating he was either unresponsive or in cardiac arrest. No students or staff members were harmed in the incident, and authorities emphasized that there was no active shooter inside the school. However, afternoon prekindergarten classes were canceled, and parents were given the option to pick up their children early. School officials placed the building on lockdown as law enforcement quickly secured the area. A section of Clarence Street, where the initial shots were fired, was cordoned off as investigators worked to collect evidence. The school's security footage captured the chilling moments when the suspect chased his injured wife toward the school. Sheriff Easter reiterated that the shooting was a result of domestic violence and not a targeted school attack, though the location heightened concerns among parents. “It can be scary for parents,” said Easter. “But law enforcement arrived within two minutes, and the children were never in immediate danger.” Police are continuing to investigate, including questioning the Lyft driver who had transported the family. Operation Save-A-Casing is a partnership with law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal level and the community to combat firearm-related crime. The campaign works by submitting two firearm casings to a Wichita Police Department Officer after a gun theft has occurred. These casings are then submitted into National Integrated Ballistic Information Network known as NIBIN. NIBIN is a national database containing digital images of spent bullets and cartridge casings that were found at crime scenes or test-fired from confiscated firearms. This database can be searched for possible matches and if a "hit" occurs, the NIBIN lab sends that information to WPD investigators.EPISODE PAGE: https://thebreakdown.ca/033Officer Paul Estrada Cruz has been with the Wichita Police Department for over eight years.
