"Someone owes you something, is indebted to you, and you let go of that debt. It's like it's written on an IOU, and you're tearing it up and throwing it to the wind." ~ Kenna MilleaWhat does real forgiveness actually require, and why isn't "forgive and forget" a Christian idea at all?Why does it bother you so much more when your spouse or your kid does the exact thing you secretly do too?Is it even possible to forgive someone who never asks for it, or who's no longer in your life to ask?In episode 106 of This Whole Life, Pat and Kenna Millea break down forgiveness, starting with a surprising fact: nowhere in the Gospels does anyone ever ask Jesus for forgiveness point-blank, and yet he forgives constantly. That single detail unlocks the idea at the center of this episode, unilateral forgiveness, the practice of forgiving before someone asks, apologizes, or even realizes they hurt you. They start with a simple, clarifying definition of forgiveness as canceling a debt, not forgetting it ever happened, then work through what scripture and C.S. Lewis have to say about why forgiveness might be the most disobeyed commandment in Christianity. Kenna introduces a concept from her spiritual director called empathetic repentance, the idea that what actually costs you your peace isn't what the other person did, it's the seed of that same thing already in you. They close with a real answer to one of the hardest versions of this question: how do you forgive someone who's died, or someone you're no longer in contact with, when you'll never get to tell them? This episode is for anyone still waiting on an apology that may never come, or anyone who's realized that holding out for one is quietly costing them their own peace.Chapters:(00:00) - Cold Open(00:43) - Welcome and What's Harder to Forgive: A Game(13:09) - Highs and Hards: A Notre Dame Anniversary Trip(18:19) - Defining Forgiveness: The IOU You Tear Up(23:36) - What Scripture and C.S. This week, we’ll hear from Butch Hartman, the animator and creator behind Nickelodeon’s biggest shows, including The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom. Butch grew up in a chaotic household in Michigan, where television and comic books served as his primary escape. This early passion eventually led him to California’s top animation school and then to a long career at Nickelodeon. Today, we’ll hear why he walked away after nearly twenty years at the network to start his own studio. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Matt Cooper, a country artist from Jacksonville, Florida who turned the worst year of his life into a number one radio single. After losing his mother to cancer, Matt found himself white-knuckling his grief, until a late night group therapy session cracked something open and sent him home to write a song in a single hour that would change everything. So it’s my job as a producer and a showrunner and a studio head to make sure that whatever goes on that screen is uplifting and is good for people’s souls and their spirit.” - Butch Hartman “There are kids out there I will never meet, but I know that the content I’m producing is going to somehow affect their life in a positive way for the Lord.” - Butch Hartman “We have to be very wise about the decisions we make, especially when it comes to entertainment, because it lives forever.” - Butch Hartman “I think it’s really hard, especially as a man, to deal with grief, because you try to white knuckle everything as a dude.” - Matt Cooper “I’m a big believer in therapy. It was really, really great for me. It was a way for me to talk through the emotions that I had just been hiding a lot.” - Matt Cooper “I wrote my song 'Highs and Lows' in one hour. It was the fastest song I ever wrote. Zoran Mamdani ran on affordability. Then Manhattan and Brooklyn posted the highest rents ever recorded. Critics are pointing at two policies: a rent freeze on a million units, and New York City's sanctuary status — which invited hundreds of thousands of new residents who all needed somewhere to live. The economics are not a mystery. Freeze rents on existing stock and developers stop building, landlords stop maintaining, and supply collapses while demand climbs. Pair that with a city that told the world to come on in, and you get exactly what New York got — record rents delivered by the man who promised to end them.Sean also pulls the thread to Seattle, where Katie Wilson is running the identical playbook: same party, same promises, same policies, same predictable result. Meanwhile Texas and Florida are building their way out of the crisis while blue cities regulate and freeze and act surprised when nobody can afford a studio apartment.CHAPTERS0:00 Mamdani ripped over record-high NYC…1:30 NYC Rents Soar Despite Mamdani's…2:38 Why Government Cannot Make Builders…4:05 Florida and Texas Carry U.S. Housing…5:03 NYC Rent Freeze on One Million Units6:12 Manhattan and Brooklyn Rents Hit…7:39 New York's Foreign-Born Renters and…9:01 Sanctuary Cities Worsen the Housing…10:13 Dallas Fed Links Immigration to Rising…12:12 Brandon Gill on Immigrants and Housing…13:24 Abbott's Migrant Buses Overwhelm Blue…14:41 Mark Levine's Housing Solutions Fall…16:52 Texas and Florida Oversupply Drives…18:46 Mamdani's Housing Promises vs Wilson's…20:18 Mamdani Celebrates Rent Freeze as…23:56 Rent Freezes Kill Incentives to BuildSubscribe to @reasonablenews and hit the notification bell for daily commentary on the stories the mainstream press buries.#NFRP #Mamdani #NYCGO PREMIUM WITH REASONABLE+ FOR UNCENSORED ACCESS

You may have chosen to go into private practice because you wanted more freedom, only to find yourself recreating the same traditional workweek you were trying to leave behind. When success has always looked like putting in your time, staying busy, and being available throughout the workday, stepping away from your desk can feel like playing hooky, which can be uncomfortable — even when your business is stable and your clients are well supported. In this “Best Of” episode, Linzy revisits one of the most downloaded conversations from the past year with Diane Webber, a financial therapist, private practice owner, and coach in the Money Skills programs. Together, they explore the freedom, responsibility, uncertainty, and purpose that can come with self-employment.Diane shares how private practice has allowed her to be present for her family while navigating the changing needs of the sandwich generation. She and Linzy also talk about why therapists do not have 40 hours of quality emotional energy to give every week, how rest and time away support better clinical work, and why appearing busy is not the same as doing meaningful work.Their conversation also turns to the ongoing work of managing money as business owners. Financial systems cannot always be reorganized quickly because money is still coming in and going out while the changes are happening. Diane explains why patience, small wins, and confidence in the decision-making process matter more than trying to fix everything at once.If you have been measuring your success by the number of hours you work, feeling guilty when you step away, or trying to overhaul your finances in one intense burst, this episode will help you think differently about what a sustainable private practice can look like.Timestamps:03:30 - Meet Money Skills Coach Diane Webber04:16 - The Highs and Lows of Self-Employment05:17 - What Freedom in Private Practice Can Look Like06:05 - Self-Employment and the Needs of the Sandwich Generation07:41 - Building a Business That Supports Time Away08:01 - Unlearning the Need to Put In Your Time09:39 - Why Quality Matters More Than Quantity10:26 - Therapists Do Not Have 40 Hours of Emotional Energy11:16 - Giving Yourself Permission to Step Away12:54 - Letting Your Brain Work in the Background13:56 - The Performance of Busyness and Pseudo-Productivity14:41 - Understanding and Honoring How You Work Best17:34 - Variety, Change, and Using Different Parts of Your Brain18:17 - Why Money Skills Work Can Feel More Concrete20:00 - Creating Order in Work That Often Feels Messy22:00 - Building Confidence in Your Financial Process22:33 - Learning Money Skills While Money Is Still Moving23:30 - Creating a Sustainable, Ongoing Relationship with Money24:43 - Do All Private Practice Owners Identify as Entrepreneurs?29:33 - Finding a Gap and Building Work Around It30:33 - How Owning Your Niche Helps the Right Clients Find You32:22 - Outsourcing Work You Do Not Enjoy33:00 - Freedom, Responsibility, and the Thrill of Self-Employment34:06 - Diane's Financial Therapy Practice35:29 - Linzy's Final Reflection and Community InvitationConnect with Diane Webber:Diane is a licensed professional counselor and certified financial social work counselor with a fully online private practice in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Today's Headlines: Pete Hegseth went to Congress to ask for $1.5 trillion more for the Iran war — on top of the $37.5 billion already spent — while the Pentagon has been quietly underreporting troop injuries, with the New York Times revealing over 400 Americans have been hurt, nearly 100 just in July, which the Pentagon characterized as "mostly mild concussions" which is indeed, an injury. The 17 service members killed in a war we supposedly won several times were also not mentioned with particular urgency. In another Oval Office mess of an interview, Trump met with Lebanon's president to discuss the Israel-Lebanon peace agreement, then took press questions and downplayed Chinese election interference the week after his entire primetime election fraud circus, because consistency is not the vibe. On the election beat, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that a software glitch registered over 6,600 noncitizens to vote between 2023 and 2024, with fewer than 400 ultimately voting — a mix of Democrats, Republicans, and independents — the glitch was fixed in 2024, the vendor was fired, ineligible voters were removed, and Trump is going to love every second of this regardless of context. Graham Platner's replacement in the Maine Senate race is state legislator Troy Jackson, who secured the nomination and had reporting drop about his temper within 24 hours — including allegedly throwing a water bottle during a meeting about red flag gun laws. On public health, cyclosporiasis cases hit a record high with over 4,100 confirmed and 7,400 more under investigation, and measles cases reached a 35-year record with nearly 2,300 cases — the highest since measles was eliminated from the US in 2000 — and we're only halfway through the year. And finally, a judge ruled Trump must hand over detailed financial records for over 400 companies in a family trust as part of the defamation lawsuit he brought against the BBC over a January 6th documentary, which is the legal equivalent of suing someone and accidentally showing them your diary. "Day after day after day, you and I would just wake up and feel like we were underwater. Could not get our head above water, could barely breathe." ~ Pat MilleaWhat does it actually take to survive the "fog of war" years of early parenthood without losing yourself or your marriage? Why might letting go of your own standards, like a spotless house or a specific parenting method, be the healthiest thing you can do for your family? What's the one practice Pat and Kenna almost let slip that ended up holding their marriage together? In episode 105 of This Whole Life, Pat and Kenna Millea open up their playbook for surviving, and even thriving, in the trenches of early parenthood. Drawing on their own experience raising seven kids, they talk honestly about the season a friend once called "the fog of war," the disorienting, sleep deprived stretch where you can't seem to get your head above water. From there, they walk through seven hard won practicals: holding firm to your values when everything feels chaotic, finding your own family's "clean spectrum," knowing when to take advice and when to let it roll off your back, outsourcing what you can without guilt, and protecting the handful of moments each day that actually shape your family's culture. They close with the two habits that quietly hold their marriage together in the middle of it all: going on dates, and praying together daily, even when it's just a Hail Mary before falling asleep. This episode is for anyone in the thick of parenting little kids who has wondered if they're doing it right, or anyone who remembers that season and wants to look back on it with a little more grace.Episode 105 Show NotesReflection QuestionsChapters:(00:00) - Cold Open(00:38) - Welcome, Lightning Round, and Highs and Hards(17:39) - The Fog of War: Why Early Parenthood Feels Like Survival(21:05) - Practical 1: Clarify and Hold Your Values(25:30) - Practicals 2 and 3: Finding Your Clean Spectrum and Filtering Advice(38:39) - Practicals 4 and 5: Outsourcing and Protecting High-Impact Moments(47:10) - Practicals 6 and 7: Dates, Prayer, and Staying Connected(53:12) - Challenge by Choice and Closing PrayerSupport the showThank you for listening, and a very special thank you to our community of supporters!Join our email list and never miss an episode or an eventVisit us online at thiswholelifepodcast.com, and send us an email with your thoughts, questions, or ideas.Follow us on Instagram & FacebookInterested in more faith-filled mental health resources? South America cruising delivered some of the most spectacular sights I have ever experienced — but also a few costly, frustrating, and very unexpected lows. On my recent 31-night South America cruise, I filmed live updates from eight of the region's most popular cruise ports and scenic cruising days, capturing what it was really like in the moment. From leaving the ship for two and a half days to visit Machu Picchu, to standing among penguins in the remote Falkland Islands, sailing past Cape Horn, Glacier Alley and the astonishing Brüggen / Pío XI Glacier, this trip had moments that were genuinely epic. But it was not all breathtaking views and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. In this video, I also reveal the South America ports and excursions that disappointed me, surprised me for the wrong reasons, or left me questioning whether the cost and effort were really worth it, and a few ports that sounded more exciting on paper than they felt in reality. I visit and discuss Lima, Machu Picchu, Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, Ushuaia, Cape Horn and other Scenic Sailing Highlights, the Chilean Fjords, Punta Arenas, Magdalena Island, General San Martín, Puerto Montt, Coquimbo and La Serena — sharing the highs, the lows, the watch-outs, and what I would do differently next time. South America is one of the most varied and dramatic cruise regions in the world, but it is also unpredictable, expensive in places, and not always easy to get right. A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM STEPHANIE:I want to share a special invitation with you. You may have heard that I will be releasing my first book with IVP on July 28, 2026. It's a big deal and I am so overwhelmed with God' goodness in allowing me to share such an essential message about delighting in Him as the true essential foundation for all our spiritual growth and maturing. Truly, when we delight in the Lord, He promises to give us the desires of our hearts – namely, more of Himself! So, here's the invitation. If you feel this message is indeed important, and you know people – including yourself perhaps – who need to be encouraged to awaken and cultivate their delight in God, would you consider joining my book launch team? It's a great and super easy way to share the good news of God's love for us in Christ, Jesus, our Lord.**If you're interested, please go to gospelspice.com/awakendelight and find the section about joining the launch team, or email me at contact@gospelspice.com **Together, let's encourage everyone we know with the wonderful news that, in Christ, God delights in us and invites us to delight in Him!Stephanie Rousselle and her guest Dr. Saundra Dalton Smith explore what it truly means to delight in God, moving the focus from external circumstances and religious duties to genuine intimacy and spiritual maturation. This conversation around Stephanie's new book, Awaken Delight (IVP, July 2026), calls us to a deeper, more resilient delight in God, rooted in relationship, practiced in community, and modeled perfectly by Jesus. As we will see together, delighting in God means choosing intimacy and noticing His presence, especially in hardship. It requires intentional practice, honest wrestling, and learning from Scripture. Together, we will discuss how our identity is rooted not in performance but in receiving God's boundless love. As disciples, we are called to move from spiritual infancy to mature faith, just as Jesus perfectly role-models for us.Purchase the book, "Awaken Delight" by Stephanie Rousselle: https://a.co/d/0bqhUb5J Find out more about all the ways you can awaken your delight in God: https://www.gospelspice.com/awakendelightHere are some notes about the conversation:Defining Delighting in GodSaundra Dalton Smith describes delighting in God as akin to the joy and pleasure we feel towards something we love—a sunset, a flower, or even a brownie. Delighting in God means taking pleasure not just in what He does, but in who He is. It is enjoying His presence, intimacy, and communion. Saundra says, “How do I allow myself to take pleasure in who he is, not what he's doing … but him specifically?”Practicing Delight Amidst Life's Highs and LowsTrue delight in God requires ongoing practice. Our human instinct focuses on obtaining and receiving, but spiritual maturity redirects our gaze to God as the source rather than the resource. Saundra shares that practicing delight in God on good days builds the muscle to notice His presence even during difficult moments, such as when children misbehave or pets get sick—recognizing God's gifts even in hardships strengthens our relationship with Him.Interpreting Hardship Through God's LensWhen challenges arise, Scripture invites us to “rejoice in suffering.” Instead of forcing joy over the hardships themselves, Saundra advises finding joy in knowing God is with us (“the fourth man in the fire”). Practicing noticing God equips us to see His goodness regardless of circumstances.Biblical Foundation and Fresh PerspectiveAnchoring in Scripture provides strength. For example, Psalm 23's phrasing “goodness and mercy shall follow me” becomes richer when understood as “pursue”—God's love relentlessly seeks us. Reading familiar passages with fresh eyes allows the Word of God to “read” us and unearth deeper truths and areas for healing. The Importance of CommunityStephanie and Saundra emphasize the necessity of authentic Christian community. Vulnerability with trusted believers helps us remember God's goodness when we struggle. Without community, isolation can make us susceptible to discouragement and lies about our worth and God's love.Identity: Receiving God's LoveThe foundational truth is, “the only thing God desires of you is you.” Our worthiness isn't dependent on accomplishments but on accepting God's love. Saundra says, “If I never did another thing other than be a recipient of his love, that's all he required.”Spiritual Maturation: Wrestling and RestThe journey toward delighting in God isn't effortless—it's a wrestling, much like Jacob's biblical encounter. Honest communication with God (“Help my unbelief”) leads to healing and new identity, reframing our lives through deeper intimacy.Countercultural Faith and Jesus as Role ModelCulture often romanticizes Christianity, but real maturity comes from moving beyond the honeymoon phase into resilient faith. Jesus exemplifies delight in the Father—through learning, obedience, miracles, and suffering. For “the joy set before him,” He endured the cross, modeling love for God and people.RESOURCESWatch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/gospelspice Purchase the book, "Awaken Delight" by Stephanie Rousselle: https://a.co/d/0bqhUb5J Find out more about all the ways you can awaken your delight in God: https://www.gospelspice.com/awakendelight DISCOVER THE BOOK BEHIND THE PODCAST | "Awaken Delight" by Stephanie Rousselle"Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4 isn't a poetic suggestion — it's a promise. But many believers quietly assume it doesn't really work, or it's not really possible here on earth. In Awaken Delight, Stephanie Rousselle invites you to rediscover what Scripture actually means by delight — not emotional hype, not religious performance, but a steady satisfaction rooted in who God is.Delight in God isn't a mood to manufacture; it's a relationship to receive.Through biblical theology and practical rhythms, you'll learn how communion with God reshapes suffering, quiets restless striving, and anchors your identity in something unshakable.Delighting in God isn't sentimental optimism. It's deeply rooted in Christ, Jesus. It's the quiet revolution that reshapes how we endure pain, love others, and understand our own heart.Awaken Delight is a theologically grounded spiritual formation book for thoughtful believers who feel spiritually fatigued and are ready to embrace the reality of Psalm 37:4.More at https://www.gospelspice.com/awakendelight Purchase the book, "Awaken Delight" by Stephanie Rousselle: https://a.co/d/0bqhUb5JKind words from Jennifer Rothschild, Bible teacher, Author, Speaker, Podcast Host, Founder, Fresh Grounded Faith: “Stephanie helps us awaken to and experience true delight. "You, friend, listening to this, watching this right now, you are good. Period." ~ Pat MilleaWhat's the real difference between failing at something and believing you are a failure? Why does the world have a vested interest in convincing you your worth is something you have to go earn? What happens when you build your identity on your mission instead of on your relationship with God?In episode 104 of This Whole Life, Pat and Kenna Millea sit with a truth most of us know in our heads but rarely trust in our hearts: you are good, not because of what you do, but because of who made you. Kenna opens up about a moment in spiritual direction that cracked something open for her, realizing that failing has to do with her actions, but shame goes deeper, straight to her sense of being. They walk through a simple framework from their own spiritual direction called RIM: relationship, identity, and mission, moving clockwise like the rim of a bowl. Relationship with God comes first, identity flows from that relationship, and mission flows from identity. Most of us live it backwards, chasing our mission first and letting our performance tell us who we are, which is exactly how one bad meeting, one lost client, or one hard parenting moment convinces us we're worthless.Pat shares a story from his years in youth ministry about a student whose entire identity was wrapped up in sports, and what happened to that identity the moment a torn ACL took the sport away. They also get into the difference between true humility and the "fishing for compliments" version so many Christians default to, and close with two of their favorite lines on identity, one from Aslan in Prince Caspian, and one from a fifth century doctor of the church named Peter Chrysologus.Episode 104 Show NotesReflection QuestionsChapters:(00:00) - Cold Open(00:47) - Welcome Back and Today's Topic(01:20) - The Good or Bad Game(07:01) - Highs and Hards(13:09) - Failing vs. Feeling Shame(15:26) - The World's Vested Interest in Your Insecurity(19:02) - The Athlete Who Lost His Identity(25:00) - Introducing the RIM Framework(28:05) - Living It Backwards(34:57) - Why We'd Rather Hustle Than Rest(41:15) - Holding Sin and Goodness Together(45:13) - Two Closing Quotes on Identity(48:38) - Closing PrayerLinks and Resources:Prince Caspian by C.S.
