How Did They Get There

As an actor and filmmaker, Onur Tukel challenges the audience to delve into the frightening parts of who they are by, at times, leading them to live vicariously through his protagonists' colorful experiences. From exploring the joy of mortality in Drawing Blood, to the perils of masculinity in 2001's Ding-a-ling-Less, to a platonic theme of friendship amidst a romantic undertone in Richard's Wedding, the loss of one's identity among the backdrop of a physical manifestation of revenge in Catfight, and apathy transforming into adventure after an encounter with a vampire in Summer of Blood, which also features friend and contemporary Alex Karpovsky, Onur's films are like shining a mirror towards the more intimate and carnal senses. We learn about the power of perspective and its impact on perception in The Misogynists, which features Dylan Baker; psychotic longing for the one that got away in That Cold Dead Look in Your Eyes, which is shot near-exclusively in French; and the connectedness of spirituality during the Pandemic in Scenes from an Empty Church, which stars Kevin Corrigan. His latest projects include the novel Run Werewolf Run, which he authored and illustrated, and will be released in 2025 by Pitchstone Publishing (ironically based in Durham, NC); and a puppet film he directed about a marionette performer which wrapped in 2024. In our conversation, we discussed his collaborations with several actors, including Anne Heche, Sandra Oh, Ariel Kavoussi and Josephine Decker; growing up in North Carolina; the unveiling of psychotherapy's purpose in a cinematic endeavor; and the filmmakers who affected and inspired the origins of cinema in his eyes.Opening Credits: Anitek - Strange Sensations I CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US; Jangwa - Slow Me Down I CC BY 4.0. Join us for another week of laughter, TV shows, streaming, movies and all things entertainment. THIS WEEK WE'RE TALKING Movies Catfight (2016) Mission Impossible III (2006) Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) A Quiet Place Part II (2020) TV Shows Shetland (S6) Ozark (S4 - Part A) Top Boy (S2 on Netflix, or S4 on IMDB) MOVIE OF THE WEEK & PEAK PERFORMANCE Catfight (2016). Sandra Oh, Anne Heche, Alicia Silverstone, Amy Hill, Damian Young, Ariel Kavoussi, Stephen Gavedon and Titus Burgess. Directed by Onur Tukel. And finally our Peak Performance nominations are in for Willem Defoe. EPISODE TITLE This weeks episode title is dedicated to the cast and crew of Top Boy. Top Boy seasons are a little confusing, but let me break it down for you. If you're watching on Netflix you'll see Top Boy as Season 1 & 2, but if you're looking on IMDB, you will see four seasons of Top Boy. The reason for this is the original seasons have been retitled Top Boy: Summer House (2 seasons), also on Netflix in NZ. They're a little older. Then Drake, yes the rapper, came along and was like, bruv. I've got the P's, let's get this back on the air. So in some places it's considered a soft reboot, but it's actually a continuation of the story. Look, just watch Summer House and then Top Boy. Thank me later, bruv. I first took note of Ariel Kavoussi’s singular comedic talent in Onur Tukel’s “Applesauce” and then “Catfight,” where she hilariously played Ann Heche’s assistant and stole every scene she was in. She performed a similar theft this past year on the Netflix series “Maniac,” opposite Emma Stone. She also writes and directs her own work. Her new short film “The Poet and The Professor” was called a "truly absurdist, provocative, and contemporary feminist film” by Indiewire. We talk about the origins of her approach to comedy, how she works the audition rooms she suddenly finds herself in, and her relationship to her own unique speaking voice. Plus much more!
