We're back with a new episode of Sound Speed Action as we continue our countdown to Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Up next is what feels like an amazing reset for the series — Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011).This is where the franchise really starts to take off. The quality of action and entertainment jumps several levels in this installment. You get the brilliant work of director Brad Bird (The Iron Giant) as well as the first steps of writer Christopher McQuarrie stepping into the Mission world (be on the lookout for more from him soon…), making this an explosive (if sometimes uneven) hit of a movie! The cast brings a lot of fun: Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, raising both his action and comedy game. Simon Pegg's Benji is no longer just the computer guy behind the desk — he's out in the field as a great agent, delivering some fantastic moments. That includes hilarious scenes alongside Cruise and newcomer Jeremy Renner. On the podcast, we debate whether Renner fully fits the mold of these films — what do you think? Paula Patton as Agent Carter (not that Marvel Agent Carter) kicks ass and is a blast to watch as part of the IMF team. Even the smaller roles are memorable, including Tom Wilkinson as the IMF Secretary, Léa Seydoux as assassin Sabine Moreau, and Ving Rhames (he's in it for only 39 seconds, but listen for a great bit about what Rhames pulled off in this movie).Of course, the movie has its flaws: a pretty thin villain character (okay, maybe these movies really aren't about their villains…) and a major tonal shift once the action moves to India. But ultimately, this chapter reignites the series with a much-needed burst of energy, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling new era for the back half of the franchise. Let's go! We'll be back soon with more to share — enjoy this one, and let us know your thoughts.Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is available to stream now on Prime Video and Paramount Plus. It's also available to rent or buy on all major platforms. This is a public episode. This week, we're saddling up and getting back to our old ways, shootin' some fellas who may or may not deserve it, but deserves ain't got nothin' to do with it either way. It's 1992's Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris, Jaimz Woolvett, Saul Rubinek, Frances Fisher, Anna Thomson and a blink-and-you'll-miss-him Lachlyn Munro. A revisionist western primarily concerned with upending the myth of the great American frontier that its director and star built his career off of, it is a dark, bleak and dreadful film that took home Oscar gold for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (Hackman) -- just the third time in the Awards' history that a Western had taken the top prize. Plus: we're both deep in our respective music bags this week, hyperfixating on tunes from Willow Avalon and Bruce Cockburn. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our conversation, Unforgiven is currently streaming in Canada on and in the United States on Max at the time of publication. You can also find the show now on both BlueSky and Instagram, @adhddvdpod. Other works discussed on this week's episode include The X-Files, The Idea of You, Tenet, Canadian Bacon, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Superbad, Oppenheimer, Mission: Impossible 2, GoldenEye, Mission: Impossible 3, Alias, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, The Incredibles, Tomorrowland, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Rye Lane, Baby Driver, Jaws, The Fabelmans, No Country For Old Men, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, Juror #2, Heat, Tombstone and High Plains Drifter. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month by roping a few of our January features' top stars as George Clooney and Bernie Mac unite next week for 2001's Ocean's Eleven, directed by Steven Soderbergh -- one of the most rewatchable films ever made, as we can't wait to revisit it yet again as it gets welcomed into the ADHD-DVD podcast canon. Ocean's 11 is now streaming on Starz at the time this episode was released. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week, we continue to collect members of the Ocean's gang like Infinity Stones, as we find Danny playing a convincing soldier and compelling leading man in a 90s geo-political thriller that feels like a total forgotbuster, despite starring two massive movie stars and launching DreamWorks as a studio. It's 1997's The Peacemaker, directed by Mimi Leder, and starring George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Marcel Iureș, Aleksandr Baluev, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Holt McCallany, Goran Višnjić, and Michael Boatman. One of the Cloondog's early jumps from ER star to silverscreen leading man, this movie is also deeply tied to ER as a production. Clooney unquestionably has the juice however, and the movie's 90s thriller sensibilities -- while not as refined as some of its contemporaries -- still feels like something of a lost art, a type of movie we just don't get enough of these days. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Megan has never seen a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie. Dan and Stephen are making her watch ALL OF THEM. That's right, as the final (?) film in the series slowly approaches, we will be going through the ultimate preparatory task. It sounds impossible, but we'll succeed, just like Ethan Hunt and the IMF gang! We have plenty of time, so this won't be a back-to-back-to-back project, but expect plenty of M:I talk over the coming year or so. This time we're covering Brad Bird's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL. Ethan Hunt and his newly formed team of spies, hackers, and analysts must save the world using rickety gadgets, death-defying stunts, and a touch of prestidigitation. No help from Luther this time around, and no big bad villain either. How does this electrifying entry stack up against the rest of the series so far? What does an animation director bring to live-action cinema? Will the female lead return for the next movie? Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Laurent Spillemaecker, VFX Supervisor for VFX company FOLKS about their work on the fourth and final season of the Netflix hit show ‘The Umbrella Academy'.The final season sees our dysfunctional family of heroes, consisting of Luther (Tom Hopper), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Diego (David Castañeda), Viktor (Elliot Page) and Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), trying to avert yet another apocalypse. Warning, there are SPOILERS below, and in the interview itself, so if you haven't seen the final season yet, go and watch!..Still here?Okay, so if you remember the end of Season 3, the gang were left in a new reality, but also powerless. Whilst they do find a way to get their powers back, they also discover, they are the problem… After various, very "Umbrella Academy" type things happen, Ben, and his new girlfriend Jen, end up merging into a giant blob monster which threatens to destroy the Earth… And that's where Laurent and his team at FOLKS come in...FOLKS have been involved with 'The Umbrella Academy' since season one, but for the final season, the team received its most significant mandate yet. They were responsible for conceptual pre-production work to establish the creatures' identities, post-viz, final elaboration of complex shots, and creation of character and environment assets, animation, simulation, and compositing.Along with creating the monstrous version of Ben and Jen, they also enhanced the environment for a Christmas-themed sequence, adding crowd characters, vendors, snow, and more. Plus they picked up some other shots, such as Five's “blinking”, some of the laser eyes FX, and other superpowers and background work.Outside of ‘The Umbrella Academy' Laurent has previously worked on a huge range of projects including Sin City, 300, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Blade Runner 2049, Thor: Ragnarok, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and lots more. Ian Dawson's dream of a Jarvis-style computing interface seems to be coming true. This multi-talented CG veteran began his career in graphic design, before moving into producing and creating flying logos throughout the 90s. He then moved into advertising, and title sequences and VFX sequences for movies including the Iron Man trilogy, Star Wars: Rogue One, and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, picking up work in AR and VR along the way. Ian talks through his career and the technology that has helped define it, from the obscenely expensive days of Quantel's PaintBox and Harry systems, to today's cheap and accessible VFX software and systems. He gives an interesting update on the state of AR and VR systems, which are undergoing a mini-resurgence thanks to Apple's Vision Pro and Microsoft's AI integration in its AR systems. Ian also shares advice about the industry, including the pros and cons of profit sharing.

Whether these towering elements serve as stunning backdrops or pivotal plot points, they definitely leave a lasting impression. Later, we'll take a closer look at the thriller Fall, and the whimsical Dizzy Heights Hotel.Top 5 Tall Things in Movies:The Burj Khalifa in "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" (2011) - Tom Cruise's daring stunt on the world's tallest building not only serves as a thrilling sequence but also highlights the iconic structure's staggering height and architectural marvel. The Empire State Building in "King Kong" (1933 and 2005 versions) - This iconic skyscraper plays a crucial role in the climax of both films, as it becomes the final stand for the giant ape, symbolizing the intersection of man-made wonders and natural forces. The Wall in "Game of Thrones" (TV Series) - Stretching over 700 feet tall and made of ice, the Wall is one of the most formidable barriers in cinematic and television history, representing both a physical and psychological divide. The Dark Tower in "The Dark Tower" (2017) - As the nexus of the universe, the Tower's immense height and significance in the plot symbolize the monumental stakes involved in protecting or destroying it.The Titanic's Stern in "Titanic" (1997) - The dramatic scene of the Titanic's stern rising high into the air before sinking emphasizes the massive scale of the disaster, making it one of the most memorable tall elements in film history. In Fall, the height isn't just a background element; it's central to the film's tension and terror. The movie revolves around two friends trapped at the top of a 2,000 feet tall radio tower, making for a gripping survival story that uses the extreme height to amplify the psychological and physical stakes.Switching to a lighter note, Dizzy Heights Hotel takes us into a fantastical high-rise hotel where each floor hosts whimsical adventures and quirky characters. This animated treat not only entertains but also creatively uses its vertical setting to weave together various storylines and humorous escapades.Whether you have a head for heights or prefer to admire them from the safety of your seat, today's episode promises a thrilling exploration of some of cinema's tallest and most memorable elements. Join us as we climb to dizzying heights in film, discussing everything from architectural marvels to towering natural barriers.
