TV Writer, Producer, Assistant Director and Show-Runner Jill Girling known for Cube (1997), Ride (2016),  Queer as Folk (1999), Find Me in Paris and Spellbound joins us today for a very special heart to heart about how paralyzing the fear can be when we first come into contact with our creative gifts, how it can derail our loves and what we can do to find our way back to ourselves. Jill is someone who (like many people who have a deep current of creativity running through them) experienced a lot of fear when she first came into contact with her creative gifts. At the beginning of this episode Jill muses about what happened after she first decided she wanted to be a storyteller and writer - how she went veering almost cataclysmically from her path, getting lost in crime and partying and eventually in bringing other peoples creative dreams to life through her work as an Assistant Director in Hollywood.Over the course of this organic, curious and open hearted conversation, we discover together how fear can keep us from our creative dreams, causing us so much heartache. Together we are able to name and identify the mechanism that led Jill to veer off her path, what brought her back to it and the realization that maybe she was never really lost at all. When we start to see how these fear mechanisms work, how we're keeping ourselves from our dreams, it's like the portal to not doing that anymore. How often have we found ourselves facilitating someone else dream not our own?  How often have we done this? Are we doing it right now? What if you follow your creative dreams? What is the worst that will happen? You're not going to die because you have a creative failure. You're just going to learn from it.It is a powerful conversation, one that many of us can find ourselves in, and I can't wait for you to hear it.WHAT WE TALK ABOUT -How Creativity plays the long game with us, taking us on adventures that only make sense looking back at them-How fear of how bright the creativity inside her was stopped her from following her own creative dreams and ultimately led to a life of depression and alcoholism, and how she stopped that cycle and started to live the life of her dreams-How she healed her workaholism for once and for all -The one drastic thing she did that has done more for her creativity than anything else she has ever done-How she realized she couldn't juggle working, drinking AND writing. Wanted to give it a real shot - said to herself, lets see what happens if i quit drinking-The simple thing she does to get through times when she is overwhelmed with work - the little reward system that keeps everything functioning.     RESOURCES USED IN THIS EPISODESpellboundFind me in Paris (HULU)Great GatsbyLegends of the Fall Brad PittJackie Chan Rumble in the BronxAdhdJJ abrams HBOHallmark MoviesRide (Nickelodeon)Paris Opera Ballet School Gilmour GirlsVancouver Film School

"I think Riches has all the hallmarks of the things I've worked on before in terms of complex, slightly subversive women. At the heart of it, it is negotiating power dynamics. And at the heart of it, there are two very complex and yet vulnerable black women, but I've always loved family drama shows and particularly family businesses, whether it's fictional ones or in real life. I think whether you're talking about the Hiltons, the Kardashians, or the Royal Family, the dynamics of how, where power and money and blood merge is just such a potent and combustible mix that I've always been intrigued by them. I watched them growing up, whether it was Dallas or Dynasty or Six Feet Under, so it was a space which I was really interested in, and wanted to write a black family business show.Myself and my producers, they knew my interest, and we talked around what would a black British business be, and they were interested in cosmetics, which I thought was a really good start because obviously, that's incredibly visual, but for me, hair was the piece that kind of tied it all together. A hair and cosmetics business because black hair is often so politicized, and it's such a way in which black people are sometimes policed in terms of having dreadlocks, having relaxed hair, whether they wear wigs. So it was a way in which we would have a glamorous visual for a show and an entertaining world that's aspirational, but still have a layer in which we get to tell substantive issues about black beauty, about black ownership, about how the spoils from a very lucrative industry often don't go back into the black community. So that's why I was interested in that. It could be glamorous and fun but also have slightly more in-depth issues to talk about as well."Abby Ajayi is a British Nigerian writer and director who serves as a show creator, executive producer, and writer on the Amazon Series Riches, which is currently on Amazon Prime and premiers on ITVX in the UK on December 22. And at that point, that seemed like a horrible thing to say to a wannabe writer, but I think in retrospect, almost about 20 years into my professional career, it is a really good note and it's a note that's even more important now because, at that point, it was like I wanted to have my first show by this age.You have these markers in your head, but writing careers are unpredictable. You know, there aren't sort of linear, you get promoted each year. It's just, the industry is changing. So I think it's important to be really aware when you start on the endeavor, it could be a longer journey than you imagine, and the fact that it's not happening right away isn't necessarily indicative of failure. If you keep writing, if you're constantly learning with all the new scripts, and just keep doing the work... I think particularly a generation for whom experience feels like a weird thing because they grew up in a world where Zuckerberg was a billionaire at 20-something, so they expect to land on their big ideas so much earlier. And so that creates a lot of anxiety and fear and a sense of failure so early on, when actually just living your life, keep writing, keep doing the work. It might take longer, you know? But this idea that you are obsolete by 30 if you are having a hit the thing, I think it's just really just a terrible trauma and burden to carry on one's self. Of course, the UK and the US systems are quite different. Really the showrunner model is very much the American system. While the UK historically has a much more lead writer who then hands over the scripts to the producer who then hands them over to the director. But I was clear that I do feel that if one has the desire and the ability to be a much more big-picture showrunner, I think that's to the best. That benefits the show because there's a creative voice running all the way through. This isn't a movie, where it's a director's medium. It is the writer's medium, so I think the writer should be across producing and also empowering the director, but there is a clear vision. In terms of leadership, it wasn't very much about ultimately starting to say, Okay, this is what it is, and being confident in that. And also acknowledging when one makes mistakes, you know, because you're making a lot of decisions in a very short period of time. And I think it's important to give credit where it's due as well and that was also true of being a director. It's important to give credit. So have a vision, and work with those people to have the vision. Listen to what they're saying, listen to their ideas. And making television just makes it crucial to sort of have a vision, but be able to pivot."www.imdb.com/name/nm2184926www.amazon.com/Riches-Season-1/dp/B0B8MTCYVMwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.orgInstagram @creativeprocesspodcast

I wrote it in January, we filmed it in May, and had a final cut by September. There was plenty of downtime in between, but from start to finish was about eight months. We ran into some technical issues in post that were very annoying and slowed the process down. We probably would've finished it a month or two sooner otherwise. He can currently be heard as host of Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air on The Ringer Podcast Network. The show features Wilmore's unique mix of humor and wit as he weighs in on the issues of the week and interviews guests in the worlds of politics, entertainment, culture, sports, and beyond. Larry can also be seen in Netflix's Amend: The Fight for America where he also serves as Executive Producer. The series debuted in February and is hosted by Will Smith. From September-December 2020, Larry hosted and executive produced a limited weekly special talk series WILMORE for NBC's streaming service Peacock focusing not only on the 2020 Presidential Election, but on the topics that America is talking about. He has an overall deal with Universal. Wilmore is perhaps best known for his role as host of Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, which debuted in January 2015 and ran for nearly two years. Wilmore received praise from critics for carving out a “uniquely powerful space” and providing “complex, destabilizing commentary on racial issues that were otherwise lacking in late-night” (Slate, 8/16). The Daily Beast added that Wilmore's show was “exhilarating” and a “necessary voice in late-night” (8/16). Off-screen, Wilmore serves as co-creator and consulting producer on HBO's Insecure, a half-hour comedy series starring Issa Rae that details the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern-day African-American woman. Wilmore also helped to launch ABC's black-ish as an executive producer and is a co-creator of the spin-off Grownish. Previously, Wilmore made memorable appearances as the “Senior Black Correspondent” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and hosted his own Showtime “town hall”-style comedy specials, Larry Wilmore's Race, Religion & Sex. He has written for In Living Color, The PJ's (which he co-created), The Office (on which he has appeared as Mr. Brown, the diversity consultant), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him a 2002 Emmy Award for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award. In April 2016, Wilmore hosted the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington, DC. Wilmore released his first book, I'd Rather We Got Casinos and Other Black Thoughts, in January 2009. He currently lives in Los Angeles.
