This episode is about a story that needs to be heard. It's the tale of an amazing individual and jazz artist named René Marie. Her story has been portrayed in an award - winning short documentary by Rachel Kessler, a Brooklyn-based director, screenwriter, and producer with over a decade of experience deeply rooted in her artistic and creative beliefs. The beauty and soul of René Marie has been captured in this film called, ‘Tuning René Marie', that weaves you through the early life of this GRAMMY-nominated jazz vocalist. It premiered at the Oscar-qualifying Woodstock Film Festival in 2022 where it was nominated for Best Short Documentary; it's now available for all to see on the prestigious short film channel, Omeleto. It's an extraordinary story that we're honored to share as we speak to both women about how it came to be, and the impact it's had on them, and on everyone who's seen it.

Last week I put out a call, and these women answered. Struck by a recent conversation I had about war vs. peace, I realized the misogyny in the idea of peace - as something naive, weak, emotional and decidedly feminine. So I wanted to double down on my wish for peace and 5 women showed up to help do just that, offering words, sound, meditation, breath, prayer, and love.First is a meditative guided visualization from the wonderful Seaira O'Brien, multidimensional healer and word alchemist. She is followed by The Great Octave founder, Shulamit Elson who offered her signature Medisounds healing frequencies. Shulamit was on the show in November 2021 talking about grief and sound healing. Also returning to the show is Kristin Moshonas who brought us into our bodies, breath and hearts. She was on the show in May of this year talking about mental health and her work to support it. Trinity joined in studio with her guitar to set the tone for a song she wrote year's ago about love and alchemy. Her sound healing work can be found here. Last but not least is my pal Tara Sanders who's been a return guest several times. Today she guided us through a loving kindness practice sending prayers to ourselves and others. I asked her to mention the details about another event she is involved, HERSTORY: A symposium bringing together five film initiatives in the region that work to empower, celebrate and elevate female-identifying and non-binary folks in the film industry. HUDSY, Moonshot Initiative, Stockade Works, UPWIFT, and the Woodstock Film Festival will each present about their organizations, some of their past work, and the opportunities that each provides to engage with and encourage the continued expansion of diversity in the industry. This event is happening November 7th at the Rosendale Theatre.I close the show with the Full Moon report, and mention another local happening, a screening of the film $AVVY at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck on Nov. 15th at 5:15pm: This film dives deep into the complexities surrounding women and money, uncovering the hidden narratives that have influenced our perceptions for generations. Directed by visionary filmmaker Robin Hauser, "$AVVY" is a captivating journey through time, culture, and society, examining the intricate relationship between women and money. From historical accounts that have shaped financial narratives to the unspoken rules that govern our modern world, this film unearths it all. GIANT PICTURES PRESENTS A World of HA Productions Film in association with Atlas Industries and The Intellectual Property Corporation "Our American Family" Addiction is an all-encompassing force, in not only of the lives of the afflicted, but also those around them. OUR AMERICAN FAMILY provides an honest, unfiltered look at a close-knit Philadelphia family dealing with generational substance abuse. Captured at a pivotal “nothing to lose” moment, for over the course of a year, five family members tired of life with addiction on center stage, each struggle to transcend their crippling histories. What will it take to shift this entrenched, wrenching pattern in their lives? Will they be able to make significant shifts to help their next generation? The members of OUR AMERICAN FAMILY invite us into their lives to find hope and to explore what's possible. Though they often falter, their familial loyalty is powerful, demonstrating how through love and dedication people can rise out of the deepest depths. For a touching, eye-opening look into one of America's most pressing crises, look no further. OUR AMERICAN FAMILY opens in September timed to National Recovery Month, a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible. On today's show I share my conversation with Therese Shechter, award-winning filmmaker and writer, and the founder of the feminist production company Trixie Films. Her work fuses humor, activism, and personal storytelling to disrupt what's considered most sacred about womanhood. She is a Canada Council for the Arts grantee for her documentary My So-Called Selfish Life which is having its World Premier this week at the Woodstock Film Festival. The film examines what it means to say no to motherhood in a society that assumes all women want children, and exposes what's at stake when women are denied the right to control their own reproductive lives. It is the third part of a trilogy which includes her films “How To Lose Your Virginity” (2013) and “I Was A Teenage Feminist” (2005). These documentaries have screened from Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul to Seoul, and her work is in the collections of over 300 universities, non-profits, and libraries. I had the opportunity of a sneak peak at her film and it's fascinating, thought provoking, informative and entertaining… and this is coming from someone who has struggled to have children yet is STILL trying!Woodstock Film Festival Showtimes and Locations:World Premiere: Thursday, September 30 4:45 PM at Bearsville Theater, Woodstock, NYEncore Screening: Friday, October 1 11:00 AM at Orpheum Theatre, Saugerties NYVirtual Screenings: September 29-Oct 10 streaming onlineTickets: https://bit.ly/SelfishLifeWoodstockTrailer: https://myselfishlife.com/I played songs by Miss Eaves, and Fanny, but I don't have the rights to them so you only get a sample here. Welcome to Episode 40 of Reel Travels I'm your host, Lisa Iannucci. This episode, I take a detour and head over to Woodstock, New York for the 21st Annual Woodstock Film Festival and, as I’ve said several times before, my favorite film festival. I’ll tell you about the movies I watched and what I thought about them. Let’s get started. Film festivals suffered big time this year. The festivals depend on movie tickets being sold and souvenirs being bought and the communities they are located in depend on tourism dollars with hotel stays, restaurant visits and more. If you’re not familiar with film festivals, you should be. It’s a great way to see some of the best movies that don’t always make it to the theaters. Some do, but not all do and there are some talented filmmakers out there. I started thinking about how can I do my part during quarantine to help and I realized there are two areas that fit me well -- movies and books. So my goasl going forward are to bring you more promotion on film festivals as well as to encourage you to support your local independent bookstores, not just to buy my books, but to buy any books. The arts need your help. Please listen to the podcast and support the Woodstock Film festival. Check out: https://www.woodstockfilmfestival.com/wff_store/souvenirs.php Well, that’s it for this week’s podcast. Thank you so much for listening to Reel Travels. Please follow me on Instagram @thevirgintraveler and if you have a minute, maybe leave me a review on this podcast? Thanks. See you next time!
