In 1818, Army veteran John Cleves Symmes Jr. declared that the earth was hollow and proposed to lead an expedition to its interior. He promoted the theory in lectures and even won support on Capitol Hill. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Symmes' strange project and its surprising consequences. We'll also revisit age fraud in sports and puzzle over a curious customer. Intro: Grazing cattle align their bodies with magnetic north. The Conrad Cantzen Shoe Fund buys footwear for actors. Playing on national tours for 25 years in shows such as White Christmas, Bombay Dreams, High School Musical, Miss Saigon, and more including a Japanese tour of Rent should all be enough to discuss in one episode.  That's a full career as a touring percussionist with some major shows. However, he's also worked extensively as an actor/singer, a choreographer (or "moveography" as he calls it) and director, an AEA certified Stage Manager.  But since all of that was on hiatus, he started his own podcast network and is the creator and host of two sports podcasts: Loyal Littles Podcast and The Upset Special.  He's an NFL fan, and I questioned him in advance about who he had picked for the Super Bowl.  We now know that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs.  How did Louis do on his picks? Why does he do so much?  It's because of his 3-word life statement, "Just keep working."  That he does!Follow the podcast on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter @LifeInThePitPod.  Visit www.davidlanemusic.com/podcast for more info or to send feedback regarding the podcast.  Please leave a rating and a review.  Thank you for listening.

On the back of our discussion of Citizen Kane comes the discussion of a movie made nearly 80 years after Citizen Kane, about the making of Citizen Kane. Mank is the 2020 offering from director David Fincher, exploring the troubled and complex person that was Herman J. Mankiewicz. A man who would be the writer of a movie that man consider the best American film ever made. Mankiewicz must contend with William Randolph Hearst, Marion Davies, Orson Welles, and Louis B. Mayer on his journey to not only write the script while bedridden, but to advocate for his own credit on the film. An all star cast features Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Tuppence Middleton, and Charles Dance. Not for the uninitiated, Mank calls back to the movie that inspired it on a level that should remind listeners to give Citizen Kane a rewatch before digging into Mank.
