What if the vampire in Nosferatu (1922) was played by a real vampire? Shadow of the Vampire takes this popular myth and uses it as a catalyst for a truly unique and brilliant character study and dark comedy. Willem Defoe, John Malkovich, Cary Elwes star as the eccentric film crew going to any length to make their movie feel real. We discuss this film's significance to the Nosferatu movies of the past, and why it deserves to be held up with them.

Well we will find out today as we return to the mind of Tim Burton and look at a sequel over 30 years in the making. We have some iconic cast returning with Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara and Michael Keaton reprising their roles. We also have additions of new cast like Jenna Ortega and Willem Defoe. Everything on paper looks incredible but I have some concerns going in... Is it too little too late, will this be a nostalgic cash grab or does Tim Burton truly have more story worth telling? You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. We'll read out any texts we receive on the show. Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're delving into David Cronenberg's eXistenZ (1999). While the film presents some intriguing ideas about the fusion of reality and virtual gaming worlds, our consensus is that it feels somewhat undercooked, particularly when measured against Cronenberg's usually visceral and visually striking standards. eXistenZ introduces a future where video games are plugged directly into players via organic ports. We follow Allegra Geller, portrayed by Jennifer Jason Leigh, a celebrated game designer who, after surviving an assassination attempt, must delve into her own creation alongside Ted Pikul, played by Jude Law, to evade her attackers. As Allegra and Ted navigate the game, the boundaries between the game's universe and their reality blur. This should create a tantalizing narrative, yet somehow, the execution doesn't quite hit the mark. The transitions between layers of reality are intriguing but lack the depth and impact one might expect from such a concept. While eXistenZ pitches a captivating premise about the dangers and allure of immersive technologies, the exploration of these themes feels somewhat surface-level. The film toys with philosophical depth but doesn't dive as deeply as it could into the murky waters of reality versus virtuality.Known for his ability to shock and provoke with vivid imagery and corporeal horror, Cronenberg's subtler approach in eXistenZ leaves fans of his gore and shock factor a bit wanting. The biotechnological interfaces and creatures, although creatively conceived, don't carry the visceral impact seen in his other works like Videodrome or The Fly.For viewers intrigued by the blend of technology and narrative, eXistenZ offers enough to spark interest, particularly for older teens keen on science fiction and virtual realities. However, it may not satisfy those looking for a deeper, more finished exploration of its themes or expecting the stomach-churning visual flair typical of Cronenberg's films. Why It's Worth a Watch Despite its shortcomings, eXistenZ is worth watching for its original concept and as a piece of the broader Cronenberg canon. It stands as an interesting, albeit flawed, examination of where technology could take us and the potential consequences of living between worlds. So, join us as we plug into eXistenZ, dissecting what works, what doesn't, and how it fits into the larger landscape of technological thrillers. Whether you're revisiting or experiencing it for the first time, there's plenty to unpack in this ambitious but not fully realized venture.

A great movie that is very difficult movie to recommend because of its subject matter, Paul Schrader's Auto Focus (2002), the story of TV-star Bob Crane, is another of Schrader's portraits of a man whose self-destruction we watch with admiration for the writing and unease at what we're seeing. It's a combination of The Lost Weekend, Reefer Madness, and Sunset Blvd. with Willem Defoe at his creepiest. But it's much more than perfect recreations of Hogan's Heroes or Greg Kinnear's incredible performance: it's a movie about the power of movies and images and of how nothing seems real until it is filmed—an idea we see all the time as people hold up their phones to record their vacations, kids' sporting events, or office birthday parties. It's a shocking film, but Schrader seems to have been as shocked to make it as we are to see it. Auto Focus is based on Robert Graysmith's The Murder of Bob Crane. If you are interested in the details of Crane's murder—which remains a cold case—you may want to read John Hook's Who Killed Bob Crane? The Final Close-Up. A more traditional biography of Crane that seeks to tell more than what Schrader does in Auto Focus was published in 2015. Errata: Not really an error, but the quote from the Whatever Podcast is, "It's very convenient that women waited until after one of the most deadly and brutal wars to secure their right to vote." The vampire's name in "Nosferatu" (1922) was Graf Orlok, played by Max Schreck. The film starring Willem Defoe was "Shadow of the Vampire," not "Kiss of the Vampire." Craig replaced "Possum Kingdom" with Delta Spirit's "How 'Bout It." It's not made clear, but Nicky Minaj settled with Tracy Chapman. The "Mark" in Devo is Mark Mothersbaugh. He has since been nominated for an Academy Award “I'm always thinking I'm about four hours away from being fired!” He also lightheartedly admitted that his co-star Willem Defoe, and even the film's director, Yorgos Lanthimos questioned his outrageous character choices. “Willem said to me first day on set, he's like: “Are you out of your fucking mind?” In the end, Ruffalo was so grateful for the opportunity to take risks and push himself this far: “It was so liberating. After some mini reviews, the boys got giddy talking about the film year 2013, which was a doozy- ‘Gravity', '12 Years a Slave', ‘The Wolf of Wall Street', to name a few. We chose to take a second look at Denis Villeneuve's ‘PRISONERS', starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal as committed as they'll ever be. We discussed how, with the help of Roger Deakins our podcast hero, this familiar genre looked and felt better and more visceral than the rest of the bunch. Also, Viola Davis crushed a supporting role (duh), Terrence Howard was heartfelt as a sub, Maria Bello brought life to the tricky in-bed-all-day grieving mother, and Paul Dano….. holy crap. In a wildly rare move... sort of, we are only covering one film this week, Poor Things. As usual for the pre-award rush, we've been hyping the fact that we would need to share several movies per episode, but this week... accidentally, we are laser-focused on Yorgos Lanthimos' latest, and this treat with Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, and Willem Defoe is certainly worthy of our attention... even if it isn't quite the 10/10 I was expecting. It is close though.

Send us a Text Message. We are seeing the end of  Bob Crane's acting career here, in that he was real-life murdered a few months after this dark and confusing episode.  Yes,  that Bob Crane - from Hogan's Heroes - whose life was later dramatized in the movie Auto Focus with Greg Kinnear and Willem Defoe. Look it up. Yikes. Creepy. His Jerry Springer-style plotline ultimately is another study of inappropriate affection between two passengers: a long-lost father and his adult daughter.  It's strange writing, and we couldn't help but feel baffled. Also, Airplane's awesome Robert Hayes is underused in an unfortunately small role here.  Next, things take a wild turn as a younger lower-income couple finds themselves in a luxury Presidential suite, thanks to Julie and Gopher's scheming. Then, they must navigate a dangerous game of pretending to be marketing experts and avoid their arch-nemesis on the boat. Also confusing."Hey, poor people, here's an upgrade. Enjoy this upgrade.! But one condition. You have to pretend to be these marketing company people.'"— Producer Caleb"It's not really that hard to pretend like you're in marketing. You literally just throw out a few key terms like "KPI," "point of view" and "demographics" and they're like, yes, we believe you. Literally, anybody can do it."— CharlotteIn another Love Boat scene, a woman is referred to as "a little lady," which causes us to briefly examine how many women were treated/portrayed "back in the day."  Next, we show the ultimate example: we roll a 1968 Maxwell House TV commercial that shows women as completely and aggressively subservient. Boo.BONUS SHOW QUOTE !! (unrelated to anything) "I could have walked away with every dude in Montana at that point. I could add a ranch, cows, horses, cowboy hats, whatever the f--- I wanted. I was literally a star in Montana." — CharlotteInternational waters: a playground for mischief, discrimination, and even illicit activities? While Jon doesn't think of the movie too highly, I'm personally in love with the technical aspects on display, but there's a million more things to discuss outside of just the "technical aspects".
