He sold the Eiffel Tower. He turned a lawman into a crook. He was a rabbi, priest, birthday party clown, blind beggar on the street, and a bellhop. He mingled with society and the underworld. And he spent his last years on the Rock. Get in touch: rustyhingespodcast@gmail.com Twitter @rustyhingespod Hosted by Lars Hacking Written by Charlie Worroll Additional music by Dee Yan-Key
Born Robert Miller, the man who would later become known as Count Victor Lustig traveled across Europe and the US bilking hundreds of people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. He had many, many scams, and posed as everything from an elite theatre producer to a stressed-out, down on his luck government official and more. Here's the thing: For most of his career, Victor was able to talk his way out of any arrests or convictions. Noir Factory Podcast Case #026: Victor Lustig-Con Man Extraordinaire “I’ve always loved movies about con men. I think con men are as American as apple pie.” -Bill Paxton, actor Victor Lustig was born on January 4th, 1890. Maybe. He said, more than once, that he came from the Austria-Hungarian town of Hostinné, in what is now the Czech Republic. He said once that he was the son of the town’s burgomaster. He also said that he was the son of the poorest couple in the village. Believe what you like about the childhood of Victor Lustig, just know that there’s not a lot of upside in taking the word of a con man. As a boy, Victor Lustig was an excellent student. Not of books and notes, not of procedure and equations. He was a student of people. He picked up languages quickly and he saw patterns in people’s behaviors where others didn’t. He studied at the University of Paris and became fluent in Czech, French, English, German, and Italian. While he never was an imposing person, he learned charm and poise, and he learned to make them work for him. Facebook- http://www.facebook.com/TheNoirFactory
His name was Robert V. Miller but he called himself “Count” Victor Lustig. He sold a machine to duplicate money, robbed money from a bank, was caught, and talked his way out of charges, and then escaped from an escape-proof jail! He was called the smoothest con man in the world but most people know his as the man who sold the Eiffel Tower. My guest on this episode is Jeff Maysh, author of the Kindle single "Handsome Devil", a book that documents the life and death of one of the most talented and charming con artists of the 20th century, Victor Lustig. He was a master of disguise, an escape artist, and the creator of epic swindles in the 1920s and 30s, including "selling" the Eiffel Tower and managing one of the most prolific counterfeiting operations in American history.
