Those Jimenez and Cairney headers and a 30 yard screamer from Harry Wilson will write themselves into the annals of Fulham folklore for generations to come. In this episode of Beekeeping Today Podcast, Jeff and Becky welcome U.S. Representative Jim Himes of Connecticut's 4th Congressional District for a lively and inspiring conversation—not about politics, but about bees. A hobbyist beekeeper with a deep passion for the craft, Jim shares how he got started, the joys of hive management, and why working bees is his favorite antidote to the stress of congressional life. From extracting honey to navigating Varroa mites and splits, Jim discusses his apiary in suburban Connecticut, seasonal nectar flows, and how beekeeping has awakened his awareness of pollinators and bloom cycles. He reflects on the challenges facing bees today—from pesticides to USDA research cutbacks—and shares his perspective on sustainability and agricultural innovation. Listeners will enjoy stories from Jim's own bee yard, including an unforgettable confectioners' sugar mishap involving his wife. He also talks about how sharing honey in Congress creates unexpected moments of camaraderie. Whether you keep one hive or a hundred, this conversation highlights the common ground found in beekeeping—across fences, party lines, and hive boxes. The Ag-Net News Hour Hosts, Lorrie Boyer along with Guest Host, Josh McGill discuss the current state of trade and tariff updates, noting a potential lull due to the 90-day China pause. Japan is re-engaging in trade agreements. Weather conditions vary, with California facing a dry season and fire risks. The 405Z tax credits for renewable energies, including sustainable aviation fuel, were extended to 2031, benefiting ethanol producers and corn growers. The reconciliation bill, which includes farm bill provisions, faces pushback, particularly on SNAP benefits, which could be cut by $290 billion over 10 years. The bill also includes safety net provisions for farmers, such as better reference prices and insurance programs. In the second segment of the Ag Net News Hour, Lorrie and Josh talk about the recent House-passed reconciliation bill, highlighting its impact on the ag industry, particularly specialty crop growers in California, who contribute more than half of the state's agricultural gross product. The bill improves crop insurance premium support levels, raises protection levels to 95%, and increases the federal premium cost share from 65% to 80%. It also includes provisions for trade promotion programs and conservation funding. Additionally, CAL/OSHA issued its first citation under the new indoor heat illness prevention regulation, emphasizing the importance of safety training and compliance for ag businesses. The 2025 California almond objective forecast by the USDA is out and is the feature in this week's Almond Board of California report. The USDA estimates a crop of 2.8 billion pounds, a 3% increase from 2024. The forecasted yield per acre is 2,010 pounds, up 30 pounds from the previous year. The almond bloom began in February and peaked mid-month, with weather variations affecting crop development. The subjective forecast is based on opinions from 500 growers, with a more accurate report expected on July 10. Additionally, a strategic partnership between CeresAI and Bear aims to bridge data gaps in agriculture, enhancing risk management and decision-making. Beekeepers face significant annual losses, often around 50%, due to various factors including pesticide exposure and shipping stress.

I once did a deep dive into the commandments, teachings, pillars, rules—whatever label the world's major religions gave their moral codes. I read through the Bible, the Quran, the Torah, the Tao Te Ching, Buddhist teachings, even some tribal belief systems. All of them had different flavors, rituals, and stories—but when you strip away the incense, the robes, the chants, and the translations, guess what the core message boiled down to? Don't. Be. A. Dick. That's it. That's the thesis. Don't lie, don't steal, don't kill, don't screw people over, don't act like the center of the damn universe. Be kind, help others, say thank you once in a while, and if you screw up—own it. You don't need a theology degree or enlightenment from a mountain monk to grasp this. But here's the real kicker: it's simple, not easy. Ego gets loud. Pride gets in the way. Fear and anger turn people into walking middle fingers. And before you know it, you've become the very jackass you swore you weren't. “Don't be a dick” is more than a joke or a bumper sticker—it's a code. It's the real golden rule without all the religious fluff. Live it, and the world gets a little less stupid. Ignore it, and congratulations, you're part of the problem. So yeah, whether you're quoting scripture or just trying to not be the worst part of someone's day, remember this: all the sacred texts pretty much agree—just don't be a dick.

Over the weekend Tammy was watching "The Beekeeper" when about 50 bees invaded her home. So far they haven't returned, but now she is worried they might show up and make their new home in her kitchen. Can that happen? We talked to bee expert Bee Man Dan this morning to see what exactly is going on and if she conjured them with her movie.
In this 2025 spring beekeeping update, Jeff and Becky gather beekeepers from across the country for a timely check-in on seasonal progress, survival rates, and challenges. Joining the table are Ang Roell (MA/FL), Bonnie Morse (CA), Duane Combs (AZ), and Jay Williams (TN), each offering a candid look at their spring buildup after a winter marked by extremes. Topics include overwintering survival—ranging from Duane's 70% losses in Arizona to Jay's impressive 96% survival in Tennessee—and how weather volatility and hive nutrition played pivotal roles. The conversation dives into spring splits, swarm control, queen longevity, and promising new varroa treatments like VarroxSan and RNA-based controls in development. Jay shares the results of using VarroxSan in his operation, while others discuss balancing cost and effectiveness with homemade oxalic pads and breeding practices. The episode also explores instrumental insemination, drone saturation strategies, and queen selection across climates. With thoughtful input from across the country, this roundtable offers insights that every beekeeper—regardless of location—can reflect on as spring rolls into full bloom. On this episode of Fishing the DMV, I sit down with the owner of MX Plugs—a custom lure maker with an incredible backstory and a serious passion for innovation. It all started with a broken plug he found lakeside. No hooks, no hardware—just potential. After cutting it in half, reshaping it, adding rattles and new hardware, he crafted a plug that actually caught fish. That spark of creativity launched a journey that took him from offshore shark and tuna charters to the creeks and bays of Long Island, chasing striped bass. Over the years, he's honed his craft designing lures for everything from tuna and dolphin to freshwater bass, eventually leading him to start his own company, MX Plugs. Wednesday, May 7 - Host and American Family Farmer, Doug Stephan www.eastleighfarm.com shares the news affecting small farmers in America, including a focus on dairy trade challenges, disaster assistance from the USDA, and our relationship with other countries in relation to the tariffs. Then, the focus shifts to preparedness for an ICE encounter on your farm, knowing your rights as a business owner and the rights of your employees. Then, Doug introduces us to Steve Rapasky, owner of Meadow Sweet Apiaries near Pittsburgh, PA. Fun fact: most of Steve's beehives are actually located at Pittsburgh International Airport. His background goes back to growing up on a farm with livestock in addition to bees, then he got his degree in wildlife science at Penn State University and spent a decade as a wildlife biologist in the state agency before exiting into his own apiary with a certification as an Eastern Apiculture Society (EAS) Master Beekeeper. Many people want to get involved with having bees on their farm or property, and that's great because we need to continue to support the bees, but many don't know how to take care of them. We're also reminded that everything we eat that comes from the ground has a connection to bees, further exasperating the urgency to protect our honeybees and focus on their survival rate. You can learn more from Steve on MeadowSweetBees.com. Lastly, Doug opines the stresses at this time of year to get things in the ground, the lack of making health a priority for most farmers, the importance of rest and regular breaks, and more emphasis on why communities need to support family farmers. How do tapes work? Who's back (for the first time even though we don't see them)? And what's set way back in the middle of a field? We record the answers to these questions and more as we deconstruct Season 1, Episode 8 of Family Matters. Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.Join our countdown to number one (and our slow descent into madness) in all the places you expect internet people to be:Website: jumpingtheshuttle.spaceEmail: jumpingtheshuttle@gmail.comInstagram: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Twitter: @JumpingShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577TikTok: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Brought to you by Smooth My Balls

The followup, A Working Man (co-written by Sylvester Stallone!) finds Statham as Levon Cade, a former British soldier now working in construction in Chicago, who is asked to rescue the daughter of his employer from a sex trafficking ring run by the Russian Mafia. We discuss this unique writer/director partnership, a lightning round of some of our favourite Jason Statham movies, and the many highlights from both The Beekeeper and A Working Man, action films that know what they are, deliver the goods and correctly identify the worst people in today's society (scam artists, crypto bros, white South African psychos and guys with Jared Leto beards). In this reflective episode, Jim Tew shares an honest and personal conversation about queens—both the winged kind in the hive and the ones we buy in cages. Sitting among his thriving colonies, Jim weighs the pros and cons of letting bees raise their own queens versus introducing commercially produced ones. He explores the timing, risks, and costs of each approach and how personal priorities—like honey production, genetics, and even beekeeping stamina—factor into the decision. As spring builds, Jim considers the idea of walkaway splits, splitting strong colonies and letting the bees raise their own queens naturally. But is that the right call? Will a naturally reared queen be as productive or reliable as one from a queen producer? What if the colony falters during the queen-rearing process? From his rocking chair among the bees, Jim doesn't offer a definitive answer—just thoughtful questions and seasoned observations for beekeepers at any stage in their journey. Whether you're driven by production goals or simply enjoy the companionship of your colonies, this episode offers plenty to think about when it comes to queens, splits, and what it means to keep bees. ______________________ Thanks to Betterbee for sponsoring today's episode. In this episode of Beekeeping Today Podcast, certified honey judge Stephanie Slater joins Jeff and Becky to demystify the art and science of honey shows. From understanding how entries are judged to tips on preparing award-winning honey, Stephanie shares her journey from entering her first show in 2019 to becoming Wisconsin's first certified judge through the American Honey Show Training Council. Stephanie discusses what makes a honey show entry stand out—from reading the rules (yes, seriously!) to selecting high-quality jars, preventing bubbles, and even traveling with honey safely. She shares insights into the Black Jar competition (hint: it's all about flavor), gives pro tips for preparing entries, and explains why feedback from judges is so important for improving and learning. The conversation also explores the steps required to become a certified honey judge, including training, stewarding, judging exams, and why these standards matter to elevate honey and beekeeping as a whole.
