This Is Your Afterlife
Utmost Worst with Tom Krell (How to Dress Well)

"There is nothing theorizable or interesting about death," Tom Krell says 30 minutes into his appearance on my podcast about death. He's speaking precisely. By "death," he means what he's learned of it from watching those close to him die. The annihilation of self. The finality of it. What he's not doing is dismissing the topic. Tom earned his PhD in philosophy, metaphysics specifically, so it makes sense he's intentional and unsparing with his words. But he also makes this beautiful music.Under the name How to Dress Well, his art-damaged R&B soundtracked my bike rides the summer before my coma in 2014. Since then, his music has grown deeper and more promiscuous. He incorporates metal, noise, and field recordings on tracks with lyrics about the hegemony of realism and intergenerational trauma. But it's all wrapped around a spine of primal, haunting melody. In our conversation, Tom tells me how important it is for him to use direct language to discuss philosophical ideas. And that is what he's doing with his music. He piles layers of sound and meaning onto melodies to bury the ideas and feelings deep. I'm still listening. This episode also includes the fun of Tom claiming Hegel, Heidegger, and Marx are easy to grasp and the rare TIYA exclusive! Here it is: Tom plans to call the new How to Dress Well album "Glow Palimpsest No Hell."We talk about: working on philosophy in piecemeal while touring, writing about your own work, Gaspar Noe's Climax, exoteric vs. esoteric, his version of the "terribly stupid" movie Memento, consciousness as Hegelian "picture thinking," metaphysical cope. This Is Your Afterlife is made possible by listeners like you on Patreon. Holly Dunn was the only known survivor of Ángel Maturino Reséndiz, the serial killer who became known as the Railroad Killer. In 1997, 20-year-old Holly and her boyfriend, Christopher Maier, were attacked near railroad tracks in Lexington, Kentucky. Christopher was murdered. Holly was beaten, sexually assaulted, and left for dead, but she survived. Her survival would become an important part of the case against Reséndiz, a transient serial killer connected to murders across multiple states and eventually placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. But Holly Dunn's story did not end beside those railroad tracks. In this episode of When Killers Get Caught: The Survivors, Brittany Ransom examines the attack, the hunt for Ángel Reséndiz, Holly's role in bringing him to justice, and the life she built afterward including her advocacy for victims of violent crime, the creation of Holly's House, and her memoir Sole Survivor. This is the story of the woman the Railroad Killer believed he had silenced and what happened when she got back up.If you want to connect with Brittany, catch regular updates, true crime discussions, and short-form video breakdowns follow us on social media:Check out the website: https://www.whenkillersgetcaught.com Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhenKillersGetCaughtFollow on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@caughtpodcastGet the Gear: https://www.caught-podcast-shop.fourthwall.comCase Submissions: CaseCloserSubmissions@gmail.comBusiness Inquiries: Caughtpodcast@gmail.comMusic featured in this episode is used with permission from Myuu. https://open.spotify.com/artist/5sP3ci0jwrXUBo76t8pGTF

But for me, the real treat of this episode is my guest. Philip Metres is a poet, scholar, and TRANSLATOR OF ARSENY TARKOVSKY'S POETRY. That's right, the father of Andrei whose poems feature prominently in several of his films, especially including Stalker. Phil and his co-translator Dimitri Psurtsev published I Burned at the Feast: Selected Poems of Arseny Tarkovsky, an approachable volume that shows the father as an artistic force, a fact the son clearly knew. Beyond his translation work, Phil has amassed a heap of impressive accomplishments. Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships! A Pushcart Prize! He's the director of the Peace, Justice, and Human Rights program at John Carroll University! And I just happen to know him socially as a fellow Clevelander and 80s punk rock fan. Who better to talk to about Andrei Tarkovsky's status as "the poet of cinema"? On January 15, 1978, serial killer Ted Bundy entered the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University, murdered Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy, and brutally attacked Kathy Kleiner Rubin and Karen Chandler. Kathy survived but Ted Bundy was far from the first thing she had survived. This week on When Killers Get Caught, Brittany Ransom takes a deep dive into Kathy's remarkable story and her memoir, A Light in the Dark: Surviving More Than Ted Bundy. We examine the increasingly reckless Bundy who arrived in Florida near the end of his killing spree, what happened inside Chi Omega, the survivors who are too often overshadowed by Bundy's mythology, and the moment Kathy faced him again in court. But most importantly, this is about what happened after Ted Bundy left the room.Because Bundy may be part of Kathy Kleiner Rubin's story, but he doesn't get to own it.The truth always leaves a trail and sometimes that trail leads straight back to the survivor who lived long enough to tell it.If you want to connect with Brittany, catch regular updates, true crime discussions, and short-form video breakdowns follow us on social media:Check out the website: https://www.whenkillersgetcaught.com Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhenKillersGetCaughtFollow on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@caughtpodcastGet the Gear: https://www.caught-podcast-shop.fourthwall.comCase Submissions: CaseCloserSubmissions@gmail.comBusiness Inquiries: Caughtpodcast@gmail.comMusic featured in this episode is used with permission from Myuu. https://open.spotify.com/artist/5sP3ci0jwrXUBo76t8pGTFIf you enjoyed this episode, please take a moment to leave a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify it helps more listeners discover our victim-centric approach to investigative storytelling.

I razz him for using "brutally honest" in descriptions of two separate projects, but I love Brandon Ogborn. I know the comedian, playwright, podcaster, and reluctant "content creator" from our days on the same improv team at iO Chicago, Sports Team. Reminiscing about that time is the closest I get to nostalgia, and even then, Bubba had stories that made all our eyes pop out of our skulls. He's continued to amass stories as a parent of two young kids he makes fun of on Instagram, and now he's turned his parenting and growing up stories into a one-man stage show, SAHD (Stay-At-Home Dad). It's a funny, personal piece full of heart and the idiosyncrasies that make Brandon such a joy to know. You should see it in L.A. if you can (details below). Either way, enjoy this little slice of Brandon. We talk about: his dead dad, ADHD, growing up Christian nationalist in the Midwest, out-of-body experiences vs. astral projection, people outgrowing homophobia, the accuracy of Pixar's Soul, reckoning with the statistical unlikelihood of Hollywood success. Also, there is one f-slur and a very quick mention of child sexual abuse. This Is Your Afterlife is made possible by listeners like you on Patreon. We trace Rhonda's terrifying encounter, her 20-foot leap to freedom, and the 40 years of silent survival, high-functioning PTSD, and religious shame that followed before she finally reclaimed her narrative. This isn't another story about Ted Bundy. I say "fiction," but this is famously Tarkovsky's most autobiographical film. In at least one interview, he claimed every single thing in it had happened. I'm skeptical, but as you'll hear, he certainly went to GREAT LENGTHS for verisimilitude. My guest for this episode is Vienna, a contributor to Madeline Lane-McKinley and Sean O'Brien's The Return of the 90s anthology who also happens to love this movie. This episode is a special one because I refer to Tarkovsky's questionnaire for his mother. He had planned to include her answers as documentary footage in an early version of the film, but instead, these wide-ranging questions serve as punctuation throughout our episode. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/j1YmLlwJm2gIn Episode 271 of the Further Your Lifestyle podcast, host Chris explores the difference between wanting a goal and being willing to do what it takes to achieve it. He argues that most people love outcomes but resist the repetitive, uncomfortable process required, and that the real barrier is often willingness to learn rather than capability. Chris shares examples from starting his podcast and reselling business, then outlines practical ways to become more willing: stop trying to know everything before starting, fall in love with reps through routine and consistency, shrink the challenge into one small action at a time, and remember nobody begins as an expert. He closes with reflective questions about commitment, confidence, and the uncomfortable steps being avoided.00:00 Welcome and Topic01:09 Wanting vs Willing01:30 Dream Price Tag02:46 Excuses and Reality04:00 The Willingness Gap04:53 Start Before Ready05:14 Love the Reps05:54 Shrink the Challenge06:31 Nobody Starts Expert07:06 Hard Truth Commitment08:25 Questions to Ask08:44 Real Example Pushback09:27 Take the Next Step10:46 Closing and Call to ActioPodcast Sponsors:Robert PiperHi Voltage BargainsEthan “Rooshock” The BOLO Hunter PODCAST: https://www.furtheryourlifestyle.com/► SUBSCRIBE to the podcast on▹ Spotify | https://bit.ly/FYL_Spotify▹ Apple Podcast | https://bit.ly/FYL_Apple▹ Google Podcast | https://bit.ly/FYL_GooglePod► Let's CONNECT on social media:▹ instagram | http://www.instagram.com/furtheryourlifestyle▹ email | hello@furtheryourlifestyle.comMUSIC:» via https://www.epidemicsound.com/referral/6hfvrvContinue the conversation:  @furtheryourlifestyleJoin the Newsletter: check it out

At just 17 years old, Lisa McVey was kidnapped by one of America's most dangerous serial killers. But instead of giving in to fear, she did something extraordinary, she observed, she remembered, and she survived. In this episode of When Killers Get Caught, Brittany Ransom tells the incredible true story of how one teenager's courage, quick thinking, and determination not only saved her own life but helped investigators identify and capture a serial killer before he could claim more victims. As Season 5: Case Closers: The Survivors begins, we shift the focus away from the people who committed these horrific crimes and toward the individuals whose resilience changed the course of criminal investigations. Lisa McVey's story is a powerful reminder that survivors are more than victims, they are witnesses, heroes, and sometimes the very reason justice is possible.Because sometimes, the person who closes the case is the one who lived to tell the story. If you want to connect with Brittany, catch regular updates, true crime discussions, and short-form video breakdowns follow us on social media:Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhenKillersGetCaughtFollow on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@caughtpodcastGet the Gear: https://www.caught-podcast-shop.fourthwall.comCase Submissions: CaseCloserSubmissions@gmail.comBusiness Inquiries: Caughtpodcast@gmail.comMusic featured in this episode is used with permission from Myuu. https://open.spotify.com/artist/5sP3ci0jwrXUBo76t8pGTFIf you enjoyed this episode, please take a moment to leave a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify it helps more listeners discover our victim-centric approach to investigative storytelling.

"Ants experience humans as shadows and wind." And with that statement, four-time (!) TIYA guest Oui Ennui blew my mind. There are forces bigger than we can imagine, and how can we be sure of what we know??!!! My conversations with Jonn (Oui) get heady, so I wasn't surprised to be talking about the nature of time, but that ants line was poetry. It's a moment of resonance in a conversation about resonance, artistically and in relationships. The episode starts and ends with the concept of no-contact, but it's the result of the exact opposite between Oui and me.We talk about: breaking no-contact, Alice Coltrane, Prefab Sprout, not being built for these times, passive suicidal ideation, reasons to stay alive, overexplaining as kink, one-person communities. This Is Your Afterlife is made possible by listeners like you on Patreon. This is a preview of this week's bonus episode. Subscribe to TIYA After Dark on Patreon to support This Is Your Afterlife & get all bonus episodes for $5 a month: patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife.It's another episode of Bracketology, the comedy argument game show created by me and some of my longest friends in comedy. This time, it's Bill Stern, Claire Favret, Meaghan Strickland, and me arguing Ways to Live! How it works: pick a topic, fill a bracket with examples of that topic, and argue the matchups in the bracket until we crown a winner. The thing is, the winner of Bracketology is the quintessential example of the topic, NOT necessarily the "best" or our favorite example. If you'd like to look at the bracket in seed order before/while you listen, here you go!Golden RuleFarm With All Your Friends Surrounded by the Ripest, Most Delicious Fruits (Fruit Commune)ExtravagantlyYOLOFamous Musician Constantly on Tour, Beloved by Fans but at Night After the Shows… Alone (Commitment to Craft)AnonymousDouble LifeVicariouslyEnjoy, subscribe to TIYA After Dark to hear the full ep, and spread the word!Follow Claire:https://www.instagram.com/clairefavs/Follow Meaghan:https://www.instagram.com/stricklygram/Follow Bill and Claire's sketch group, Cigarette Sandwich:https://www.instagram.com/cigsandwich/Follow TIYA, share your thoughts:https://thisisyourafterlife.com/https://www.instagram.com/thisisyourafterlife/thisisdavemaher@gmail.comMusic by TIYA house band Lake Mary:https://lakemary.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/chaz.prymek/Artwork by Matt Sage:https://www.instagram.com/matthewjsage/

Host James-Christian Blockwood interviews Ambassador Joe Westphal and former senior FBI executive Lauren Anderson about how national security has evolved from the Cold War through 9/11 to today's interconnected threats, including terrorism, geopolitical shifts, and emerging technologies. Both warn that global changes, partner uncertainty, polarization, and reduced information sharing can make the U.S. less safe, alongside a loss of government expertise and strained diplomacy. 01:55 How Security Has Changed03:17 Collaboration And Trust05:11 Today's Threat Landscape09:11 Eroding Trust And Expertise15:09 Rebuilding Trust18:49 Listening And Self Correction21:39 Serving Above Politics23:02 Advice For Next Generation26:16 Checks And BalancesManagement Matters is a presentation of the National Academy of Public Administration produced by Lizzie Alwan and Matt Hampton and edited by Matt Hampton. Support the Podcast Today at: donate@napawash.org or 202-347-3190Episode music: Hope by Mixaund | https://mixaund.bandcamp.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comFollow us on YouTube for clips and more: @NAPAWASH_YT
