Connoisseurs and conmen: The contest for cultural authority in early twentieth-century Britain (Manchester University Press, 2026) by Dr. Lewis Ryder examines John Hilditch (1872-1930), a notorious collector of Chinese art who lied, hoaxed and manipulated in his struggle against museum experts to become a cultural authority. Previously overlooked as a pest with a dubious collection, this book uses Hilditch to interrogate how far the monumental social, cultural and political changes of the early twentieth century unsettled social and cultural hierarchies and how these hierarchies were remade. It shows how the cultural elites were forced to engage with the public and re-draw the boundaries of citizenship, expertise and high and low culture in response to unprecedented social mobility, the democratisation of culture and politics, as well as the effects of British imperialism which brought ordinary Britons access to antiquities as well as confidence to claim expertise over foreign cultures. The book will interest social and cultural historians of Modern Britain, museum scholars and art historians. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Is the master of spin trying to distance himself from a sinking ship?  Sturgeon's SNP "Blind Spot": Nicola Sturgeon claims she had no idea about the SNP's finances. Laura continues her interview with Sarah Ferris moving beyond the initial deception to unpack the deeper patterns, behaviours, and mindset of a conman - and what we must learn from it.   Laura and Sarah profile Peter Cowell, who posed as an Admiral, extracting money from senior leaders, veterans and even targeting former police detectives for an organisation he called IntSAR – the International Sea Air Rescue Service, a global humanitarian project with a military-style structure.  It turns out, it is a work of fiction.   Drawing on both lived experience and behavioural analysis, Laura and Sarah explore how perpetrators create influence, maintain control, and continue offending - often across multiple victims - while appearing credible and trustworthy to others.   Key Takeaways: • The Pattern Behind the Persona: Why conmen rely on consistency, charm, and credibility - and how this masks repeat offending • Grooming & Influence: How trust is built quickly and used to establish control and dependency • Serial Behaviour: Why there is almost always a history -and often multiple victims • Missed Warning Signs: How red flags are explained away, minimised, or only recognised in hindsight • Turning the Tables: The power of awareness, collective action, and refusing to stay silent • Prevention & Protection: Why recognising patterns early is key to reducing harm and protecting others   This conversation goes beyond the individual case - it is about understanding the psychology of deception and the patterns of behaviour that enable it.

In 19th-century America almost anyone could print their own money – and many did. One of the most notable figures to take this up was a man named James Brown, a charismatic conman who built a fortune producing fake banknotes. In this episode of The Story of Money, Stephen Mihm, a professor of history at the University of Georgia, introduces hosts Gillian Tett and Robin Wigglesworth to “the hardest working man in counterfeiting”. They discuss the parallels between banking in the Wild West and the advent of cryptocurrencies today, and the role trust plays in all financial systems. We all like to think we would know a conman when we see one – that's what savvy Sarah Ferris thought when her sister Emma introduced her to the man she met on Tinder. His name was Andrew Tonks – only it wasn't. His real name was Andrew W C Tonks Thomson. After six months of dating him he conned her out of more than $250,000.   Together with her sister, Sarah, and a brilliant group of women – they didn't let him get away it and turned the tables on him. They made a podcast about it as it happened in real time called Conning the Con. And Tonks/Tomson is still making headlines, having been charged with offences relating to six more victims and a new trial in the Supreme Court. You won't want to miss this.   Listen and learn about: • Grooming, manipulation, and the psychology of influence; • Why intelligent, capable people can be targeted and entrapped; • The importance of recognising patterns - not isolated incidents; • Trusting your instincts and understanding risk; • Prevention, awareness, and protecting yourself and others;

Legal scholar Elizabeth Chamblee Burch focuses on three women with mesh implants who were targeted, manipulated, and violated—at their own expense. Through the searing stories of Sharon Gore, Barbara Shepard, and Jerri Plummer—middle-aged women separated by geography, education, and socioeconomic factors—Burch sheds light on not only the injustices of mass torts, which she describes as “personal-injury litigation on steroids,” but also the indignities endemic in women's healthcare.  Drawing on more than 150 interviews conducted over two years, backed by 209,000 pages of documentation, THE PAIN BROKERS is at once a critical work of public service journalism and a real-life thriller. As Burch unfolds each level of the scheme, readers meet: Vincent Chhabra, a Versace-clad entrepreneur and architect of Alpha Law, LLC—which, despite its name and partnerships with some actual lawyers, was a call center. Headquartered at 1000 Corporate Drive in south Florida, Alpha Law employed nearly two hundred operators in headsets who capitalized on patients' private medical records, obtained through a data breach in India, to make unsolicited calls to vulnerable women with mesh implants, including Sharon, Barbara, and Jerri.      Blake Barber, a hulking ex-paralegal with a flamingo pink goatee who turned women's medical fears into cash for third-party funders by orchestrating a ruthless “concierge service” that flew terrified patients to Florida chop shops to have their mesh removed. Dr. Christopher Walker, a Jamaican-born urogynecologist known by his Instagram handle @Dr.Downtown who, after losing his savings in a Ponzi scheme, went from inserting mesh to extracting it at breakneck speed for seven times his normal fee—a feat made possible by refusing to accept women's insurance and forcing them to sign liens against their future settlement proceeds.  J.R. Baxter, a newly minted small-town Arkansas lawyer and passionate crusader for justice who, against daunting odds, represented Sharon, Barbara, and Jerri, as well as 180 other women.And finally, J.R. 's unlikely ally, Barbara Binis, a seasoned Philadelphia defense attorney hired to do financial damage control for a mesh manufacturer who devoted nearly four years to uncovering the mass-tort scheme.           Centered on three women who went through the mesh mill, THE PAIN BROKERS exposes the profit-hungry scammers and unscrupulous doctors whom they trusted.           Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

A driver has issued an urgent warning to Kent residents selling vehicles online after ruthless “black oil” scammers sabotaged his car.The Folkestone man says conmen posing as buyers distracted him while secretly pouring oil on the engine of his Mercedes in a calculated bid to convince him it was worthless.Also in today's podcast, an inquest has heard a much-loved dad died after being crushed by a concrete drain at the construction site he was working on. Joe Heath was helping build a new logistics centre for COOK Classic in the Eurolink Industrial Estate in Sittingbourne when his death occurred. Angry residents say their new-build homes have been “ruined” by a spiked metal fence installed just feet from their windows.Homeowners and council tenants at the Woodlands development in Broad Oak, near Canterbury, told KentOnline they now feel like prisoners.People living in a country lane are fed up with flooding on the road outside their homes – but there's no obvious cause. There is a section of Vicarage Lane in East Farleigh that floods every time it rains and then remains flooded for days afterwards.And in sport, Tunbridge Wells' Matt Weston is a double Olympic champion - and a history maker twice over - after steering Team GB to victory in a dramatic inaugural team skeleton event at Milano Cortina.Following a record-breaking victory in the men's event, Weston once again proved he is the world's best with a storming run with he and his partner topping the podium in a landmark moment for British sport. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

WEAPONIZED with Jeremy Corbell & George Knapp
Alien Mummies Or Ancient Humans Butchered And Sold By Grave-Robbing Conmen?

WEAPONIZED with Jeremy Corbell & George Knapp

Anyone with an interest in any and all evidence related to alien species, non-human intelligence, or UFO/UAP is likely familiar with claims of mummified alien remains. Proponents say the remains have been buried in South America for hundreds of years and have been conclusively examined and studied by scientists and medical experts - and are legit. But many of the claims made are muddled at best, and persons involved in bringing the mummies forward have been caught fabricating evidence. For the last few years, WEAPONIZED co-hosts Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp have followed the controversy, as reported in various news reports, but decided to leave the topic to those who have the expertise needed to formally investigate the claims and the mummies themselves. If the three-fingered mummies turned out to be non-human or even extraterrestrial in origin, it would be a massively important finding that would boost the credibility of those who argue that non-human intelligence has been present on Earth for hundreds of years - maybe thousands. So, bottom line: Are these mummies the real deal, or have the proponents engaged in ghoulish grave robbing and the surgical manipulation of long-dead, but very human, corpses? An explorer and YouTube creator turned UFO investigator traveled to Brazil to take a deep dive into the claims and was, for a time, a believer, not a debunker. His YouTube site, “Incredible History,” included a previous video entitled “Show Me the Mummies,” and his explosive new video, released just days ago, appears to blow the lid off of the mummy claims and the people who have promoted what some believe is a money-making scam - one linked to South American drug cartels. Two esteemed academics have joined the conversation, and both make strong arguments that the two best-known mummies show clear evidence of tampering. In this episode of WEAPONIZED, we speak with Will Brown who created the “Incredible History” YouTube channel, along with Dr. Dan Proctor, a biological anthropologist, and Michele Adams, a highly experienced radiologist who says she is an experiencer herself. Both of these professionals are openly interested in ETs and non-human intelligence, but their precise criticisms of the mummy evidence made public so far have subjected the two PhDs to personal attacks and allegations that they are designated debunkers working on behalf of the deep state to muddy the waters. Is there an assembly line somewhere in Peru where long-dead humans are being carved up and then re-arranged to look like three-fingered aliens? And is there a flourishing black market where private collectors pay huge sums in order to obtain their very own “alien” mummy? This WEAPONIZED episode includes a spirited discussion about where the mummy debate stands now and what it would take to confirm that the two most prominent mummy specimens are the real deal. One of the most troubling aspects of cult dynamics is the way they generate self‑reinforcing histories that can become chaotic and fragmented, leaving individuals disoriented within the broader narrative. We need knowledgeable guides who can help us navigate these stories while providing a grounding in their historical context. I wrote Chapter Three of my book, The Cult of Trump, about the parallels with Jones, Moon, and Hubbard. Don Lattin, this week's podcast guest, concurred, though he personally likened Trump more closely in his mind to Jim Jones, whose leadership culminated in the historic tragedy at Jonestown. Lattin is a long-established and award-winning religion reporter. His work has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The San Francisco Chronicle. Both of us agreed that Trump exhibits traits of malignant narcissism and appears to be steering the United States toward escalating threats and harms.   The MAGA movement itself is a cult, is led by cults, and has demented authoritarian leadership written all over it. Don Lattin is a journalist who has specialized in writing about religions, cults, psychedelic history, cultural norms, and other fascinating topics since the 1970s. He's written seven books, including Jesus Freaks – a True Story of Murder and Madness on the Evangelical Edge and Changing Our Minds: Psychedelic Sacraments and the New Psychotherapy. He is also the author of The Harvard Psychedelic Club: How Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Huston Smith, and Andrew Weil Killed the Fifties and Ushered in a New Age for America. Hello to you listening in Quezon City, the Philippines!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.In 2017 (years before the current madness) Pope Francis said, “Hitler didn't steal the power, his people voted for him, then he destroyed his people.” That's what con men do. Yes, there are days when We the People feel ashamed - even hopeless - for having been duped.At the same time I'm reminded of a line in William Faulkner's 1936 novel Absalom, Absalom!. “Well, Kernel, they kilt us but they ain't whupped us yit!” The quote captures the spirit of the post-Civil War South, suggesting a resilience despite a devastating military loss. For those who paid attention, with that quote Tim Kaine introduced Hillary Clinton ahead of her concession speech. It still applies. Work still remains. Question: If it's true - and I believe it is - we are responsible for the world in which we find ourselves because we alone can change it, how are We the People showing up, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant? How are you finding your voice in these times and what are you saying when you speak up? We the People are casting off our feelings of helplessness, committing to action, reaching for miracle. Where do you find yourself reaching for miracles? Reach! They ain't whupped us yit! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, we have a lot of fake MAGA conmen influencers trying to exploit the Jeffrey Epstein matter for financial gain through clicks and subscriptions. These conmen have spread false predictions about the Iran-Israel conflict, such as World War III involvement by China and Russia, and for aligning with dictators while opposing U.S. interests. The left-wing media love these conmen because they think they can damage President Trump over Epstein. This mix of Marxist Islamists and isolation conmen is very dangerous - even Trump isn't good enough for them. You stand with Trump, or you don't. Also, an entire staff at a hospital in Suwayda, Syria, was slaughtered by Islamist terrorists. The Druze, an Arab minority sect, are being attacked by terrorist groups backed by the Syrian military, and only Israel and the IDF are intervening by entering Syria to defend them through attacks on terrorists and Syrian forces. Later, Zohran Mamdani is an anti-Semite, racist, and Islamist Marxist who refuses to denounce the Global Intifada slogan promoting terrorism, wants to tax white neighborhoods more, and seeks to seize private property. His ideology is that of Lenin, Mao, Stalin and Castro but there are Democrats like AOC and Sen Bernie Sander who back him anyway. Afterward, Gov Greg Abbott, with support from Trump and the DOJ, has called a special session in Texas to redraw congressional districts after findings of illegal gerrymandering. This could net Republicans up to five additional House seats. Democrats, led by Hakeem Jeffries, are in panic mode, planning a walkout to deny quorum—similar to their failed 2021 effort—but Republicans are prepared to counter with arrests, fines, or seat vacancies. Stuff to check out: The 10 Commandments Book John's first interview The Katelyn Bourgoin Interview The Sarah Levinger Interview The Richard Armstrong Interview The Parris Lampropouos Interview The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground The How to Write Emotional Copy Masterclass Transcript: Rob Marsh: Looking for non-obvious ways to be more persuasive? Today we're talking about the ten commandments of con men, pick up artists, comedians and others. This is The Copywriter Club Podcast. Over the last couple of months, I've interviewed a couple of guests about psychology and persuasion… on episode 447 I talked with Katelyn Bourgoin and on episode 448, I spoke with Sarah Levinger. In both of those interviews we talked about using psychology and principles from behavioral economics and neuroscience. Today's episode covers similar ground in a very different way. My guest is copywriter John Bejakovic. John runs one of the best daily email lists out there, sharing his throughts on marketing, sales, and persuasion. He recently published a book about these topics called, The 10 Commandments of Con Men, Pick Up Artists, Magicians, Door-to-Door Salesmen, Hypnotists, Copywriters, Professional Negotiators, Political Propagandists, Stand Up Comedians, and Oscar-Winning Screenwriters. It's a long title for a short book that covers a lot of ground. I wanted to talk to John about the ideas in his book, but more than that, I wanted to discuss the ethics of using these kinds of tactics to get our readers and prospects to take action.  If you want to be a better writer or a more effective communicator or simply want to help your children or customers or friends use information to make better decisions, I think you'll like this episode. These topics really appeal to me. Not just as a writer or marketer so I can use these techniques myself, but also as a consumer. You can't avoid the con men who use these tactics unless you understand the tactics and how they use them. Being smart is not enough to avoid responding positively to the ideas we talk about on this episode. Before we jump into our interview, a little while ago I recorded a masterclass to show copywriters, content writers and other marketers how to write “emotional” copy. Everyone says emotions sell, but how do you actually write emotional copy? I walk through more than a dozen examples in this masterclass and give you a proven process for figuring out the right emotions to focus on as you write… and how they change as you make your pitch. The masterclass includes several bonuses on storytelling, using A.I. to find dominant and transformational emotions, and much more. You can get this masterclass at thecopywriterclub.com/emotion And now, my interview with John Bejakovic. Rob Marsh: Hey, John, welcome back to the podcast. You were here, I think it was literally two years ago, Episode 365, where we talked about a lot of different stuff, and people maybe can go back and listen to that, but catch me up on what's been going on in your business, and this new book you've got. John Bejakovic: Yeah, sure. So, yeah, I was thinking about that. It's been about two years since I was on the podcast last and I think we talked about email and things like that, because that's kind of my bread and butter. And then at the end of that podcast, you were kind of asking me, what I'm what am I working on? And I was working on this book at that time, and the plan was to have this book, which is a kind of an intersection of different disciplines and ...
