From Paris to Plymouth. There won't be many players who would have enjoyed the career that Mathias Kouo-Doumbe did. And it was a career that almost didn't get started.Growing up in the football hotbed that is Paris, an obsession with the was game was always going to happen. But Mathias quicky shone. Despite his obvious quality, his feet were kept firmly on the ground by his parents who refused to let him join the much-famed Clairefontaine football academy and Monaco as a teenager. He would soon make the move into the professional game at his boyhood club PSG. A trip to Scotland soon followed before he was taken south, to Argyle, by former manager Bobby Williamson.Mat was an important player over his five years at the club. Comfortable playing anywhere across the back, his pace and physicality made him a firm fans favourite with the fans. This is the story of Mathias Kouo-Doumbe.

Emilie Diouf of Brandeis English, whose monograph on genocide and trauma is forthcoming, joins John to speak with the celebrated French journalist and activist Rokahya Diallo. Diouf places Diallo within a transnational black intellectual tradition, founded in the interwar period in the Negritude movement; it was then that Paulette, Jeanne, and Anne Nardal's literary salon became a meeting ground for African, Antillean, and African-American intellectuals, in the Parisian suburb of Clamart. The three discuss the slowly changing racial climate in France and globally; how to counter ethnonationalism; as well as the currents of dissent or disdain that threaten to disrupt even leftwing political solidarity. Mentioned in the Episode Diallo has directed 8 documentaries among which her 2013 award winning film, Les Marches de la Liberté (Steps to Freedom) . She is also the author of many books, including most recently, La France tu l'aimes ou tu la fermes or France, Love it or Shut it, a collection of her major articles on the “struggle against oppression in France and globally.” Ne reste pas à ta place, or Don't try to fit in, (2016) and forthcoming book Le dictionnaire amoureux du féminisme or A Feminist Lover's Dictionary (Editions Plon, March 2025) Les Indivisibles: humor watchdog organization. Chief Change Officer
#279 Greg Morley: Built, Not Bought—The Gen X Playbook for Real Inclusion

Chief Change Officer

Greg Morley isn't reinventing himself at midlife—he's been reinventing all along. As a Gen X leader who's shaped HR and DEI strategy at Disney, Hasbro, and Moët Hennessy, Greg represents the quiet force of a generation that never needed to go viral to make an impact.>>From Complaint Calls to Corporate Change“80% of the calls were complaints. That's how I learned to listen—fast.”Greg started in the trenches and never forgot what real work feels like. That early frontline experience now shapes how he has led global people strategies with heart and head.>>Gen X Leaders Don't Wait for Playbooks—They Write Them“I didn't plan to be in HR. I planned to understand people.”Whether designing HR strategy at Hasbro or rewriting DEI systems at Moët Hennessy, Greg leads with insight, not instruction manuals. >>Diversity Without the Optics“Rewiring beats rebranding—every time.”Greg breaks down how he rebuilt DEI from the inside out, ditching the optics for honest structures, tough conversations, and measurable change.>>Global Insight, Local Action“Diversity in Cognac, France doesn't look like diversity in New York. That's the point.”From Paris to Hong Kong, Greg's work proves that inclusion isn't a one-size-fits-all program. It's a flexible framework built on understanding where you are—and who you're there for.>>Bond: The Book That Calls BS on Performative Belonging“People don't want politics. They want to be seen, heard, and valued.”In his new book Bond, Greg cuts through the noise and reframes inclusion as something human—not hype. This isn't theory. It's the Gen X guide to building meaningful connection in work and life._________________________Connect with us:Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Greg Morley  --Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. With summer holiday season firmly here, this week we repeat our chat with Brenda Stowers about Le Pet Express. Her passion to offer straight forward service to travel in and out of the UK began with her own experience when relocating from California into the UK. She  flew into France because dogs and cats can travel in the cabin as long as they fit in front of your airline seat. From Paris they entered the UK on a ferry in a rented car service. Coordination took months of planning and a lot effort to find a trusted provider to cross the Channel. The only other option was to put her cats in cargo and fly direct into Heathrow. The issue with traveling in the hold as cargo means you lose control, and it can be super stressful for your pet. Le Pet Express lessens this anxiety, whether you're relocating, or popping over to Paris for a long weekend, or driving traveling onward into Europe. Le Pet Express offers help with all the newly complicated paperwork, and Brenda handles bookings and holds customer's hands through checking the minute details of the Animal Health Certificate needed for British pets to enter France. Having designed the minibus especially to accommodate five pets and their people in line with DEFRA's regulations, Brenda has traveled with Great Danes to Chihuahuas, Ferrets and of course cats. Le Pet Express is an ideal option for larger dogs that cannot travel in cabin due to their size, which puts owners off taking them abroad. A maverick celebrity chef reluctantly agrees to let the CIA use his hugely popular international food, culture, and travel TV series as cover for a dangerous espionage mission. When the CIA approaches celebrity chef Sebastian Pike about using his award-winning food and culture travel show as cover for espionage, the outspoken bad-boy host says no. When they point out how roaming the globe interviewing foodies, heads of state, rock stars, journalists-in-exile, poets, subversives, supermodels—even the pope—gives him perfect cover, Pike smiles and says, “F@#! no.”They push. Promising it's only one mission. Vowing he won't be in danger. Calling him the MVB: Most Valuable Bystander. They'd embed their top agent in his crew to do the spy work. It's still no. But when they hit him with the patriotism card, he weakens. And when romantic sparks crackle between him and the female agent, Pike's all in, kicking off a romantic spy thriller in which the globetrotting celebrity chef uses his TV series to help sneak Putin's accountant out of Russia before he's exposed as a mole for US intelligence. The high-stakes mission quickly puts Pike in harm's way. So much for MVB. There's danger, there's double dealing, there's torture, there's shooting with real bullets. Plus, a minefield of complications from the hot romance that grows between Pike and his gutsy CIA handler-producer, Cammie Nova. From Paris to Provence, this chef is no bystander. Startups are not shying away from big projects. That's my takeaway from news that The Browser Company's Arc browser is now generally available for Windows users, just as Island raised a massive grip of capital for its enterprise-focused browser tool. It's very encouraging to see startups going after core pieces of technology, and not just the apps that sit atop platforms.Of course, Chromium still reigns supreme, but unseating that horse might take a while.Elsewhere in startup-land this week on Equity, we dug into the Chowdeck round. It's a Nigerian company that is putting up impressive growth with its food delivery business. Keep an eye on it, Nigeria is a big market and TechCrunch writes that no single company has its delivery business on lock. Yet, at least. On this morning's episode we also took a look at the recent Corelight round, which given its valuation and revenue growth, is one to chew on.From the venture side of things, we discussed two stories. First, that Intuition is going after the consumer market. From Paris, the smaller fund is betting that going the opposite direction as most VCs is how to make the most money. And second, a new venture capital supergroup is forming. It also takes us to Burma, which holds a special place in Wes's heart amid all his other adventures, as that is where he met his future wife and developed an appreciation of Buddhism.Wes's first CIA stint was in Eritrea, in Africa. During his time there, the Simba Rebellion in the Congo was heating up. A crisis developed in which American hostages were taken, and Wes was dispatched there to try and rescue them. Wes then went to Vietnam, experiencing the brutality of war and narrowly escaping attacks by the Vietcong, eventually leaving Saigon on one of the very last flights out of the besieged city.Choosing Rangoon as his next destination, Wes hoped for a quieter atmosphere while combating Burma's narcotics trade. He witnessed the violent 1974 crackdown on student protests over the burial of U Thant's body, but found solace in the peaceful nature of the Burmese people. The uncommonly adventurous nature of his life even extended to his Burmese wife-to-be. Due to her inability to get a passport to leave the country, she escaped with gem smugglers to Thailand. Wes had to bribe Thai officials to marry them. Later, during his assignment in Jamaica, working for the State Department, he was “outed” as having worked for the CIA in Africa, resulting in he an assassination attempt on him and his family. From Paris to Liberia to Central America to Manila, Wes' adventurous life continued. But amid all the countries he visited and dangerous challenges he faced, the peaceful nature of the Burmese people and Buddhism still shine brightly in his memory.

Just two days before Christmas in 1996 the body of 39 year old, french filmmaker, wife, daughter and mother Sophie Toscan Du Plantier was found not far from her vacation home. Her cottage in Schull was supposed to be her happy getaway, but would soon turn into an absolute nightmare. This was a classic tale of a tight knit community that was absolutely shocked, terrified and deeply saddened by this heinous crime. Unfortunately the investigation was a shaky one which led to two countries and families arguing back and forth. In the end, even though someone was convicted, there were still doubts and no one has been put behind bars to serve a sentence for Sophie's murder. James, Matthew and Rudy join for a followup on From Paris to Petrograd: State and Revolution in Practice to discuss how the ideas of the party, the masses and democracy changes from Lenin's State and Revolution to the proclamation of the Shanghai Commune during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. We start off talking about Lenin's attitude towards the problem of specialists in the RSFSR, how this was solved by Stalin by strengthening the Party, and how Mao made an immanent critique of Stalin's solution. We then detail the process leading up to the formation of the Shanghai commune, outline the main actors involved and discuss what was unique in Shanghai with respect to other cities in this period. We finish talking about the aftermath of the commune and compare different readings on the GPCR and the Shanghai commune. References: N.
