Inutile de faire du name-dropping lorsqu'on écrit un texte introductif à propos de 4AD : de ses débuts ancrés dans le post-punk, puis point de référence incontournable d'une certaine esthétique 80s, romantique et sombre, en passant par l'inévitable dreampop des années 90 jusqu'à son renouveau au début des années 2000, 4AD est « autant un label qu'un mood », pour citer Stephen M. Deusner, auteur d'un livre retraçant l'histoire de la crèmerie.
