Alarming statistics on physical and sexual abuse, for instance, reveal the harm Black girls face, yet Black girls' representation in media still heavily relies on our seeing their abuse as an important factor in others' development. In this provocative new book, Aria S. Halliday asserts that the growth of diverse representation in media since 2008 has coincided with an increase in the hatred of Black girls.Dr. Halliday uses her astute expertise as a scholar of popular culture, feminist theory, and Black girlhood to expose how we have been complicit in the depiction of Black girls as unwanted and disposable while letting Black girls fend for themselves. She indicts the way media mistreats celebrity Black girls like Malia and Sasha Obama as well as fictional Black girls in popular shows and films like A Wrinkle in Time. Our society's inability to see or understand Black girls as girls makes us culpable in their abuse. In Black Girls and How We Fail Them (UNC Press, 2025), a revelatory book for political analysts, hip-hop lovers, pop culture junkies, and parents, Dr. Halliday provides the critical perspective we need to create a world that supports, affirms, and loves Black girls. Its a familiar story for anyone who is fan of horror cinema: the story of a young director, with no film experience, no money, and no industry know-how, who wrangles up some friends, a camera, and some borrowed money from his community, and goes out and makes a cult classic film that catapults them to a successful career in the larger film world. But for every Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson or Tobe Hooper, there are the directors who went out and made a movie, but it ultimately led them no where. Well, sometimes those movies have a life that these filmmakers never could have imagined. In this episode, we explore the 1962 cult classic film Carnival of Souls, a gorgeously shot and eerie masterpiece, and the bright eyed director who had only previously made educational films. Happy Thanksgiving week and I know this season upon which we enter is a sacred one. While we want to fill our buckets up with gratitude, peace, and joy, it's easy to be overrun with busy-ness, chaos, angst, stress, and overwhelm. As we head into Thanksgiving week and the holiday season, I wanted to slow things down…take a deep breath… and talk about two of the most powerful forces we have in our lives: Gratitude and Grace. If you want to feel more joy, more peace, more purpose and even more love, gratitude and grace are the gateway. Today, I want to share 7 things I'm especially grateful for this Thanksgiving and then I want to talk about how grace shows up—even in the imperfect, messy, beautiful parts of our lives. Let's dive in now: I'm particularly GRATEFUL for: Family. Pumped to be heading to South Carolina to celebrate Thanksgiving in the Carolina's. The amazing Retreat we just had and the 110 SOULS who said 'Yes' to being in the Room. Included are some of my top takeaways from Retreat… Health…on all levels physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The Trials, Tests, & Tribulations. Yep. Sounds strange but I'm grateful for the struggles and pain as it got me to where I'm at today. And I've learned to be grateful in the 'hard seasons.' My Life's Work—Coaching, Inspiring, & Leading people to be THEIR best. I'm grateful for the calling on my life to coach, motivate, teach, and transform lives. Friends & the IMPACT Community. I'm grateful for the people who inspire me, challenge me, stretch me, and support me. And people just like you listening to the podcast or reading the Shownotes or even one of my books. Thank you. We have one heckuva Community and I'm grateful for you. Opportunity & Possibility.
