Almost a decade ago, Scott Linebrink took a trip to Honduras with Water Mission. Joined by St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright and Don Christensen of Ronald Blue Trust, the group was there to establish clean water resources for a country where they are scarce. Little did he knew that living in a nearby community was future major league player Mauricio Dubón, now with the Houston Astros. A fews after that trip, Dubón left Honduras to pursue his MLB career. Growing up, he had felt the effects of unclean drinking water, experiencing occasional illness because of it. Now an established big league player and a member of the Astros' 2022 World Series championship team, he caught wind of the trip that Linebrink and Wainwright took to help bring clean water to his community, and earlier this season he got to thank Wainwright in person for his efforts. He joins "Get in the Game" this week to reflect with Linebrink about his road to the major leagues as well as his encounter with Wainwright and how much it meant to him. This is Part 1 of a two-part series, with Wainwright rejoining the show next to share his version of the story and how much it impacted him. "Get in the Game" is part of the Sports Spectrum Podcast Network. If you enjoyed this conversation, we know you'll enjoy these as well:— Adam Wainwright – St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher— Mark Teixeira – Former MLB All-Star— Jaime Garcia – Former Professional Baseball Player
Enjoy Ethan Scheiner discussing his new book, "Freedom to Win." Here are some highlights: 3:23-6:23: “The thing that is so incredible about this story is that it is an unbelievable marriage of politics and sports. That really is the thing that jumps right out. … This communist country, Czechoslovakia, which had started to become free, suddenly got invaded by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union said, ‘We're not gonna allow this country to become free,' and so all of a sudden the people of this little country were crushed. And they found that there was only one way they could fight back. … So they turned their whole world into supporting their team to try to fight back against the Soviets on the ice, and I just sat there going, ‘This is actually politics and sports completely overlapping. I think this is the greatest story I've ever heard.'” 14:08-15:36: “It took me a little while to realize that I actually had to tell the story from a more personal angle. At first, I just thought the history of hockey in Czechoslovakia was so amazing, that it was this country where hockey was so central to fighting the Soviets. … I thought that was enough. … ‘The great narrative nonfiction books, the things that really draw people in, are really focused on individual human beings at extraordinary times, so you need to focus more on the individual human beings.' Then all of a sudden, I said, ‘Oh, my gosh. This Holík family has had this extraordinary history that actually also at the same time tells the story of this incredible country, and it's woven into this unbelievable story of hockey and sports fitting in with everything.'” 32:06-35:27: “At one time, the communists in Czechoslovakia had imprisoned the national hockey team and sent two guys and sentenced them to 15 years in the uranium mines. So people actually thought that the Soviets had forced their hockey to die so that the Soviet team could become good. And so as time went by and Czechoslovakia had a hockey team again, people thought they weren't allowed to beat the Soviets. So this was all part of this sense in Czechoslovakia, ‘The Soviets are keeping us down, and they're using the communists to do it.' … The Soviets won the 1968 Gold medal, but Czechoslovakia was so happy to have beaten the Soviets. And people actually got a sense of ‘You know what? We actually seem to have real freedom now. We even are allowed to beat the Soviets.' They actually believed that.” 47:20-48:06: “We tend to think of democracies falling apart because a bunch of people in the streets start chanting and come in and run roughshod over those in power, and then suddenly grab the gavel and say, ‘OK, we're in charge now,' sort of Doctor Evil style. But more common, what happens is people gain power through free and fair elections, but then use the instruments of power to completely undercut democracy. And so that's a big fear that people have [that] could be happening in the United States; that's certainly what happened in Czechoslovakia.” 58:07-59:07: “We've heard this chant before when we get to 1989, as now there are hundreds of thousands of people in Wenceslas Square, and they start chanting, ‘Dubček! Dubček! Dubček!' over and over. And he steps out onto this balcony as 300,000 people are chanting his name. And so he hasn't been seen for 20 years, and he's this symbol of hope, and they're chanting his name. And in this moment, he had planned on reading some remarks, but he's so touched by the moment he pantomimes embracing the crowd. … It's a stunning moment.”

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two guys who were part of monumentally influential bands in the 2000s, and who continue to make groundbreaking music today: Paul Maroon and Noah Lennox. Maroon is behind the incredible, instantly recognizable guitar sound of The Walkmen, a band that sort of split up a decade ago but reunited just this year for what has turned into an incredibly jubilant tour. The band is currently in Europe, where they just played a show in Lennox's adopted home country of Portugal, and they'll return for a string of U.S. dates this fall, culminating in a hometown—that'd be New York—show in October. Since the Walkmen split, Maroon has mostly turned his attention to composing classical music and the occasional film score. He put out a really engaging record with the pianist Jenny Lin called 13 Short Piano Pieces, with each of those pieces inspired by and named for a different place Maroon has lived—he currently calls Seville, Spain home. Check out “El Raval” right here, and go to Paulmaroon.co for info on his solo stuff, or thewalkmen.com for tour dates. Maroon released a seven-inch recently that featured singing from his friend Noah Lennox, who's perhaps better known by the name he uses as part of Animal Collective, Panda Bear. Lennox has been part of that massively influential experimental rock band for nearly 25 years, and he's released a ton of great music both with Animal Collective and as a solo artist. His latest release, though, is a collaboration with Pete Kember, also known as Sonic Boom. Kember was a member of Spacemen 3 way back when, and he's also released incredible music as Spectrum and E.A.R. He's also earned his production stripes over the years, producing records for Beach House, MGMT, and… Panda Bear. Last year, Kember and Lennox released a collaborative album they recorded during the pandemic called Reset, and they just followed it with a dub version of the album remixed by Adrian Sherwood called Reset in Dub. Check out “Gettin' to the Point” from Reset. In this conversation, we learn that Lennox was in attendance for the first-ever Walkmen show; we hear about their adventures living in Portugal and Spain, the difference between a good show and a bad show, and whether these two are “daily guys.” Lennox also makes an accurate prediction about the NBA Finals, even though, as you'll hear, this is not a basketball podcast. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Noah Lennox and Paul Maroon for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow us on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

This week in Bass Candy we have a reggae special. Almost in a chronological way, Tropico Beats starts with Coxsone and Studio One 7” records before paying tribute to perhaps one of his favorite artists ever, the great Bob Marley. For those of you who don't know, our host started his career as a vinyl Dj collecting Jamaican 45 rpm records he bought in the many record stores around NYC. Then comes the dub, some B sides and versions, including the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry's ‘Dub in Peace' and the likes of Mad Professor and Lone Ranger. After playing some contemporary reggae music, and going into the Dancehall era, Tropico closes the special with Reggae's brother in arms, punk rock, with a live classic from Queens very own, The Ramones.Tune into new broadcasts of Bass Candy, LIVE, 3rd Friday from 6 - 8 PM EST 11 - 1 AM GMT. Chas, Christian, Rudy, and James come together to delve into a comprehensive conversation about the Prague Spring, a significant Czechoslovak reform movement. Their discussion begins by tracing the roots of Czechoslovak communism, recounting the post-World War II Communist ascension to power, and elaborating on the gradual and intricate reform drive that eventually culminated in Dubček's rise to leadership during the Prague Spring of 1968. Subsequently, they explore the ideologies championed by key reformists, analyze the factors that prompted the Soviet Union's intervention, and dissect the shortcomings of the USSR's intervention strategy. Lastly, the conversation concludes by dissecting the reformers' envisioned goals and actual accomplishments. Bibliography: G. Golan - Reform Rule in Czechoslovakia: The Dubcek Era 1968–1969 J.
