El sonido del reloj dando las doce despertó a Scrooge. Nada ocurrió y el viejo avaro pensó que todo había sido un sueño. Pero de pronto se produjo un destello de luz como preámbulo del nuevo visitante. Frente a Scrooge se hallaba un extraño espíritu, difícil de describir, porque tenía apariencia de niño y de anciano a la vez.– ¿Quién eres? – preguntó el señor Scrooge.– Soy el Fantasma de las Navidades Pasadas – respondió el espíritu. – Acompáñame.Y diciendo esto, el fantasma le agarró de la mano y, juntos, atravesaron la pared.Aparecieron en un camino rodeado de campo. Al fondo se veía un pueblo.– ¿Recuerdas este camino?– ¡Claro que lo recuerdo! Lleva al pueblo de mi infancia.En ese instante, vieron cómo se acercaban unos muchachos montados en ponys que tiraban de un carro. El señor Scrooge, en zapatillas, bata y con gorro de dormir, se sintió avergonzado.– No te preocupes – dijo el fantasma – no pueden vernos. Son sombras del pasado.Continuaron caminando hasta llegar a la escuela. Allí, en una austera aula, había un único niño, olvidado. Scrooge no pudo evitar un sollozo al contemplar a aquel niño triste y solitario.– ¡Soy yo!– Veamos otra Navidad – dijo el espíritu.Al instante, cambió el paisaje. Ahora se encontraban en una vieja casa. El mismo niño paseaba, impaciente, de un lado a otro. De pronto, se abrió la puerta y una niña pequeña corrió a abrazarlo y, con mucha alegría, le comunicó que pasaría la Navidad en casa.– Qué alegría volver a ver a mi hermana. Era una persona maravillosa, me quería muchísimo. Pero se murió hace unos años. Creo que dejó hijos.– ¡Uno! -recordó el fantasma – tu sobrino.Y según decía esas palabras, la vieja casa se esfumó y el entorno se convirtió en un acogedor almacén. Allí, el dueño hablaba alegremente con sus dos empleados.– ¡Pero si es el señor Fezziwig! – exclamó, con entusiasmo, Scrooge. ¡Y Dick! ¡Dick Wilkins!. Y ese soy yo…El señor Scrooge recordaba perfectamente aquel día. Era víspera de Navidad y el señor Fezziwig animaba a sus dos aprendices, loco de contento, a echar el cierre cuanto antes y marcharse a casa a celebrar la Nochebuena con sus familias. Ante esa visión del pasado, el corazón del señor Scrooge se ablandó y deseó tener delante a su empleado, Bob Cratchit, para decirle unas amables palabras.De nuevo el escenario cambió. Ahora se hallaban en un bonito salón. Como si se viera reflejado en un espejo del pasado, allí estaba un joven y apuesto Scrooge, junto a una bella muchacha que con lágrimas en los ojos, se despedía de él para siempre. ¡Oh! Su bella amada. Le abandonaba porque ya no era el Scrooge alegre que conoció cuando ambos eran pobres y felices. La muchacha le recriminaba haberse convertido en un avaro, le reprochaba que lo único que le importaba era el dinero. Lo que antes era amor y felicidad se había convertido en tristeza. Por eso se iba.– ¡No me enseñes más, espíritu!Pero el espíritu no le hizo caso y le mostró a esa misma joven, frente a una chimenea. Tenía en brazos a una niña preciosa, que reía y balbuceaba llamando a su papá. Cuando Scrooge se dio cuenta de que, si no hubiera sido tan egoísta, él podría haber sido el padre de una niña tan maravillosa como esa, no pudo aguantar más y gritó:– ¡No puedo más! ¡Sácame de aquí!
