Old Fezziwig sure knew how to throw an office Christmas party. Dickens's description of Christmas Eve in Fezziwig's counting house included vigorous fiddling and elaborate dancing. That style of dance may belong to a bygone time, but it lives on in the annual Great Dickens Christmas Fair. In this special episode, Cathleen Myers joins Christmas Past to explain how Victorians danced their way to Christmas. It's impossible! That clock is wrong.'He got out of bed and went to the window, but he couldn't see much.It was dark, foggy and very cold.He went back to bed and began to think.'Was it all a dream? Was Marley's Ghost really here?' he said to himself.Suddenly he remembered the Ghost's words: 'The first Spirit will come at one o'clock tomorrow morning.'So he decided to wait and see. After a long time he heard the church clock.'It's one o'clock!' said Scrooge.'And there's nobody here!'At that moment there was a great light in the room and the curtains of his bod opened.Yes, a hand opened the curtain in front of his face!He sat up and saw a strange person. It was small, like a child, but it was also like an old man.Its long hair was white but its face looked young. It was wearing white clothes with summer flowers on them. There was a piece of green holly in its hand.'Are you the first Spirit?' asked Scrooge.'Yes, I am,' the visitor replied in a quiet voice.'Who and what are you?''I am the Ghost of Christmas Past.''Whose past?''Your past.''Why are you here?''To help you.''I thank you,' Scrooge said. 'If you want to help me, let me sleep.''Get up and walk with me,' said the Spirit, and it took his arm.Scrooge wanted to say that it was late, the weather was very cold, and his bed was warm. But the Spirit took him to the window.'No, I'll fall!' Scrooge said. The Spirit put its hand on his heart.'If It ouch you here, you won't fall,' it said. Then they went through the wall, and suddenly they were standing on a road in the country. There was snow in the fields.'Good Heavens!' Scrooge cried. This is where I was born! I was a boy here!'And here membered all his old feelings about the place.'Your lips is trembling,' said the Ghost. Are you crying?''No. no...'answered Scrooge. But a tear fell from his eye. They walked along the road towards a little town with a bridge, a church and a river. Some boys came out of a school. They were laughing and singing because it was a holiday. They shouted 'Merry Christmas!' to each other. 'They are all in the past,' the Ghost said.'They are only shadows.'Scrooge knew all of them and he felt suddenly happy. Why did his cold eyes and heart become warm with joy? What did merry Christmas mean to him?He didn't like Christmas!'The school is not empty.' said the Spirit. 'One child is still there. He hasn't got any friends.''I know, I know,' Scrooge said. And there were big tears in his eyes. They went into the school, a big, old, dark place.Inside there was a long classroom. It looked sad and empty, with only a few desks and chairs in it.A little boy was sitting at one of the desks. He was reading a book by a small fire.Scrooge sat down on a chair and cried because he knew that the little boy was himself many years ago.'That's me,' he said.'I was left here one Christmas. Poor boy! Oh, I would like to.... but it's too late now!''What is it?' asked the Spirit.'Nothing. You see, there was a poor boy outside my office last night. He was singing a Christmas carol. But I didn't give him anything and I told him to go away.'The Spirit smiled. 'Let's see another Christmas!'Then everything changed. The boy was bigger, and the room looked older and darker. Scrooge saw himself again. He was walking sadly up and down. Then the door opened and a little girl ran in.She was younger than the boy.'Dear, dear brother!' she said happily. And she put her arms round his neck and kissed him.'I've come to bring you home -home, home!''Home, Fanny?' the boy asked.'Yes! Home for ever and ever!" the girl laughed.'Father is kinder now and he wants you to come home. He sent me in a coach to fetch you. Oh, you'll never come back to this horrible school! And we'll be together for Christmas! I'm so happy!'She began to pull him towards the door.'Bring Master Scrooge's luggage to the coach!' somebody shouted in a terrible voice. It was the teacher, and when he came in, the boy was very frightened.'Goodbye, Master Scrooge!' said the teacher in his terrible voice.'Goodbye, sir,' the boy answered, trembling. But when he got into the coach with his sister, he felt happy.'Your sister had a very good heart,' said the Ghost.'When she died, she left one child - your nephew.''Yes.'Scrooge remembered the conversation with his nephew in his office the afternoon before, and he felt bad about it.Suddenly they were standing at the door of an office in the city.It was Christmas again.'I know this place very well! And there's old Mr Fezziwig - alive again! Oh, dear old Fezziwig!'Mr Fezziwig was a fat, happy man with a red face.He was working at a desk.'Hey! Ebenezer! Dick! 'he shouted.'Stop your work!' Scrooge, now a young man, came in with his friend Dick.'It's Christmas Eve, boys! We must celebrate!' said Fezziwig.'Let's stop work and close the office.'So they put away all the books and papers and made a big fire. Then a man came in and started to play the violin.Mrs Fezziwig and the three Miss Fezziwigs arrived, and then a lot of young people came, and everybody began to dance to the music. Then there were games and more dances; cake and hot wine and more dances. And there was lots of roast beef and beer, and mince pies too.It was a wonderful party. At eleven o'clock, every body said 'Merry Christmas!' and the party finished. While Scrooge was watching all this, he laughed and sang and wanted to dance. He remembered it all and enjoyed it very much.'You and Dick and everybody loved Mr Fezziwig,' the Ghost said to him. 'But why? That party was a very small thing. It cost only three or four pounds. So why did you all love him so much?''A small thing!' answered Scrooge. 'No! 'Fezziwig was our manager, so he could make us happy or unhappy. He could make our work easy or hard.He gave us a lot of happiness - and that was like a fortune in money!'Then Scrooge looked sadly at the Ghost.'What are you thinking about?' it asked.'I... was thinking that I would like to speak to my clerk now...''Come, there isn't much time,' said the Ghost. 'We must be quick.'At that moment the scene vanished and they were standing in the open air.Scrooge saw a man of about forty. It was himself again, and his face showed the first signs of the problems of business and a passion for money. He was sitting next to a young girl dressed in black. It was his fiancee Belle. She was crying quietly.'You love something more than me, Ebenezer,' she said.'Oh? What?''Money. You are afraid of life, you are afraid of the world, and so you do only one thing: make money. Then you feel more secure. Money is your passion now.''No,' he said angrily.'My feelings for you haven't changed, Belle!''But you have changed. When you promised to marry me, you were a different person.''I was a boy,' he said.'And so my love is nothing to you now. You aren't happy with me and you don't want to marry me.''I've never said that.''Not in words, no - but I know it's true. I haven't got any money so you don't want me. Well, you're free to go. I hope you will be happy.'And Belle went sadly away.'Spirit!' Scrooge cried.'Don't show me anymore! Take me home!''There's one more scene.''No! No more! I don't want to see it!'But suddenly they were in a room where a beautiful young girl was sitting near a big fire.Next to her sat her mother. This was Belle, now older. The room was full of children and there was a lot of noise,But Belle and her daughter liked it, and the daughter began to play with the children. Then the father came in with a lot of Christmas presents. He gave them to the children and they laughed and shouted happily. Finally, they went to bed and the house was quiet. The father sat by the fire with his wife and daughter.Scrooge looked at them and thought: 'How sad that don't have a wife and daughter!''Belle,' said the husband to his wife. 'I saw your old friend this afternoon.''Who was it? Mr Scrooge?''Yes. I passed his office window and he was there. He hasn't got a friend in the world. His old partner Marley is dying.''Spirit, take me away!' said Scrooge.'These things happened,' the Ghost answered, 'and they cannot be changed.''Please take me back! I can't watch this anymore!'At that moment the Spirit disappeared and Scrooge was in his bedroom again. He felt very tired, so he got into bed and fell asleep.

The final traditional episode of 2021 is upon us and the duo is discussing one of the most well known and oft referenced pieces of Christmas pop culture to ever be created. Alastair Sim and Michael Caine will face off as different portrayals as the famed Ebenezer Scrooge, which one pulls it off better? And frankly, is there any better way to send off the year than talking about The Muppets once again? Jacob seems pretty excited, as expected. Also in this episode is a serious discussion regarding Ghostbusters: Afterlife, feelings for Fezziwig, Michael Caine's ability to act against sock puppet monsters, and an examination of the literary comedic stylings of Charles Dickens. It's now a few months since the events of Dark Hallowe'en and the holidays arrive in Appalachia. While Simon remains frozen and Chad and the gang celebrate a restored Susie (more on that next episode), a strange travelling caravan of performers arrives in Appalachia. Led by Lord Alastair Olivier (Wes Johnson), after their cast is decimated by a Scorched Beast, a casting call is held to refill their ranks and they get some fairly unusual responses. Staged as part of the Fallout For Hope charity drive to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, we are joined by Bethesda's Pete Hines and Sean Baptiste with the who's who of Bethesda voice actors from Fallout 3, 4 and 76 including Courtenay Taylor, Jan Johns, Craig Sechler and Mike Rosson.

We need to rally as a community. If two of the best reviewed shows since the pandemic are closing early, Broadway isn't back yet. Broadway News: Lackawanna Blues extends again! The Broadway premiere production starring Ruben Santiago-Hudson has extended for the final time. The Manhattan Theatre Club staging will now play through November 12. The solo show was forced to cancel several performances and twice delay opening night due to a back injury sustained by Santiago-Hudson, who wrote, directed, and stars in the production. The Broadway League Announced that the Jimmy Awards will return in-person to the Minksoff Theater in 2022. The Jimmys recognize the best in high school musical theatre performers nationwide and will be back on June 27, 2022 at 7:30 PM ET. Tony, Emmy, and Grammy nominee Vanessa Williams will headline a concert presentation of Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents' Anyone Can Whistle. The performance, set for March 10, 2022, at Carnegie Hall, is part of MasterVoices' newly announced 2021–2022 season. On November 3rd, The Committee of Theatre Owners will honor the late, Tony-winning playwright and librettist Terrence McNally by dimming the lights of all Broadway theaters for one minute at 6:30pm. November 3rd would have been his 83rd birthday. Amazon Studios released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming film Being the Ricardos, a look inside a week in production of the iconic sitcom I Love Lucy. The film stars Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball and Javier Bardem and Desi Arnez. Patricia Dayleg has been hired to serve as the director of equity, diversity, and inclusion for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Funny Girl on Broadway. She officially began October 18, following 10 years in government and community-based nonprofits. In the newly created role, Dayleg is responsible for the development and execution of the vision of a more inclusive and diverse workforce. Casting: Casting is complete for the San Francisco engagement of Jack Thorne's adaptation of A Christmas Carol which recently won five TONY Awards. Performances at Broadway San Fran's Golden Gate Theatre are scheduled for November 26–December 26. Joining the previously announced Obie winner Francois Battiste as Ebenezer Scrooge will be Tony nominee Nancy Opel as Ghost of Christmas Past and Amber Iman as Ghost of Christmas Present/Mrs. Fezziwig.  Tony winner Lillias White has joined the cast of the New Group's world premiere production of Black No More. Lillias is currently playing Matron Mama Morton in the Broadway revival of Chicago. The new musical is inspired by George S. Schuyler's 1931 Afrofuturist novel of the same name and set during the Harlem Renaissance. The musical will be presented from January 11–February 27, 2022, at The Pershing Square Signature Center. Opening night is scheduled for February 8. Ari'el Stachel has departed the company of The Visitor, a new musical currently in previews at The Public Theater. A statement from the Off-Broadway company calls the development a “mutual decision.” A spokesperson for The Public confirmed that performances are currently expected to continue as scheduled. Ahmad Makshoud will assume the role of Tarek. Follow @BwayPodNetwork on Twitter. Find co-hosts on Twitter at @AyannaPrescod, @CLewisReviews, and @TheMartinAcuna. Hay Kweenz, Regular Guys and Girls, we fooled 'em again! We made it to another edition of Regular Guy Friday. Another lock down may come just in time for Christmas. And as far as Christmas goes, forget Scrooge, Tiny Tim and Bob Crachet, It was Fezziwig who had it right all along. Everything you do in your day must somehow serve your dream with this ONE exception. Dreams come true, fantasies don't. Trinkets may be shiny BUT they're holding you back. Your greatest strength can also be your greatest weakness. Seek progress over perfection. Your perfect self is NOT your best self. Your best self are all these parts - and those parts will surprise and even relieve you. Knowledge is only potential power. Execution IS power while complexity is the enemy of execution. When it comes to health care it's east meets west that's best. We judge others negatively based on our own shortcomings. Kev doesn't have the time to meet Kelsey's Nordstrom coworker friend Tom but will make time to organize her closet. Maybe that will change when Regular Guy Friday ends after 25 shows to complete a box set. Pop champagne this weekend, while you still can.  Christmas Carol Part 2. The First Spirit.I am enjoying this story. It's a long time since I've read it, and I'd forgotten a lot of the detail. I do like Dickens's writing. His description of the Ghost of Christmas Past with its extinguisher (a candle-snuffer I think) and its sparkling belt. His description of the country lane they appear on on Christmas Day where young Scrooge is alone is wonderful. With all these stories that go over more than one episode there isn't much to say in the show notes.  The only thing that occurred to me as I was driving along today is that writers today are told to cut things out—extraneous scenes and superfluous words must go! Dickens didn't work like that. He was paid by the word so he puts scenes in that the story could probably do without and still get its message along. I mean the scene with Fezziwig dancing and some of the others. When they make adaptations of the story, they cut out huge swathes. But it made me think that these scenes are a delight. It doesn't matter that they aren't essential to the story; they are fun. It's like telling a composer to cut out the extra bits that aren't essential to the story. Those pieces of music are what we listen for, and these extra scenes in A Christmas Carol are to the story, not take away from it. I shall make my stories three times as long. More Christmas Ghost Stories Ebook & PaperbackOh, did I mention my https://amzn.to/3olobIJ (More Christmas Ghost Stories) it out? The paperback and ebook are done and the audiobook is being approved now. So you can get it if you want. The stories are good, and improved by the attention of my Beta Readers. Happy Holidays Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast. Today, as another holiday treat for you, here is my review of 1983's Mickey's Christmas Carol Synopsis: Based on the Charles Dickens novel, only with a Disney twist. In dreary London, on Christmas Eve, miserly Scrooge goes to work in his counting house, where also resides his only employee, Bob Cratchit. Through the course of the cold workday, Scrooge is visited by several people. The first is his nephew Fred, bring joyous tidings of the season, which warms Cratchit's heart, but infuriates Scrooge. Fred has come to invite Scrooge for Christmas dinner, but Scrooge declines. The next visitors are two gentlemen collecting funds to help the poor. Scrooge verily turns them away without any generosity. As the day ends, Scrooge allows Cratchit's wish to have half of Christmas day off, but demands that he be on time the day after. After closing the counting house, Scrooge heads to his own home. At the front door to his home, he is shocked when the doorknocker seems to take on the form of his former partner, Jacob Marley. Scrooge is later shocked when upon entering his bed chambers, the spirit of his long-dead partner appears before him, wrapped in chains as punishment for robbing widows and swindling the poor during his life. Marley cautions Scrooge that this same fate awaits him, and that he will then be visited later that night by three spirits. Scrooge cautiously goes to bed, and is soon awoken by the first spirit, The Ghost of Christmas Past. The spirit takes Scrooge back to happier times, when he was employed by a man named Fezziwig. The spirit shows Scrooge a glimpse of a once happy Christmas party, where he was introduced to a lovely young woman named Isabelle. The scene then dissolves to Scrooge's counting house, where 10 years after the meeting of Isabelle, Scrooge has grown to care more for money than her, and after foreclosing on Isabelle's cottage, she leaves him forever. Scrooge is returned to his bed chambers to ponder this, when he is then visited upon by The Ghost of Christmas Present, who then shows Scrooge a vision of Bob Cratchit's family sitting down to a small Christmas dinner. Of the family, Scrooge is drawn to Cratchit's son, Tiny Tim, who relies on a crutch to walk. Even though the meal is meager, Tim still sees no reason why they should not thanks Scrooge for the meal, since he is Bob's employer. The spirit then cautions Scrooge that Tim is ill, and that if things do not get better, he will die. Scrooge is then confronted by The Ghost of Christmas Future, who takes him to a graveyard, where the Cratchit's have come to visit Tiny Tim's grave. Scrooge is incensed by this, but then grows even more shocked when he finds his own grave, freshly dug. The spirit then proceeds to throw Scrooge into the grave, as the old miser promises to change. Scrooge then wakes up in his bed chambers, and finds that Christmas day has come. Rushing out into the streets, Scrooge encounters the two men from the day before, and eagerly donates 100 gold pieces to their charity. Scrooge also find his nephew Fred, and tells him that he'll be joining him for Christmas dinner, to the shock and delight of the young man. Scrooge then finally pays a visit to Cratchit, arriving with a sack of toys for the children, and the promise of making Bob a partner in his business, and increasing his salary. One hundred and seventy-four years ago, a British writer was horrified at the conditions under which children were made to labor in tin mines. He decided to write a pamphlet exposing these conditions. His intended title: “An Appeal to the People of England on Behalf of the Poor Man's Child.” Thank heavens the writer changed his mind. Instead of a pamphlet, he decided to write a novel making the same points. It's filled with colorful characters—including an old man who goes about snarling “Bah, Humbug!” Those two little words instantly reveal what book I'm talking about: “A Christmas Carol,” by the immortal Charles Dickens. The book has never been out of print—and it illustrates why telling a good story is often the best way to communicate our beliefs. Why does “A Christmas Carol” still resonate today? For the answer, I went to my friend Gina Dalfonzo, editor of Dickensblog. She told me “A Christmas Carol “is a book that “has everything: great sorrow and great joy, corruption and redemption, poverty and pain, hope and love.” And “it expresses the deep belief that even the worst person can change for the better.” “A Christmas Carol” is not merely a magnificent story, and its message is not confined to a “social gospel” teaching: Dickens points directly to Christ throughout. For example, Scrooge's nephew, Fred, suggests that perhaps nothing about Christmas can be “apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin.” And Tiny Tim expresses the hope that when people saw his lameness, “It might be pleasant to them to remember upon Christmas Day, who made lame beggars walk and blind men see.” This is, Gina points out, “a wonderful example of the biblical idea of God's strength being made perfect in our weakness.” Dickens' classic shoots down the idea—prevalent in some Christian circles—that reading novels is a waste of time. They seem to forget that Jesus Himself was a master storyteller. For instance, He didn't just say, “Come to the aid of those who need help.” Instead, He told a vivid story about a Samaritan who rescues a wounded man. Chuck Colson once said that when it came to learning moral lessons, he was “much more impressed by profound works of fiction than by abstract theological discourses.” Scenes from some of the greatest stories ever told, he said, “have etched moral truths deeply into my soul. Their characters and lessons are so vivid I can't forget them.” And that is likely why so many of us will never forget the moral truths told through Ebenezer Scrooge, Fezziwig, Tiny Tim, and all the other memorable characters that populate Dickens' great Victorian tale. It's why we reject pamphlets that say, “Be nice to the needy” in favor of a good strong character bellowing, “Are there no prisons? [Are there no] workhouses?” Or the ghost of Scrooge's partner, Jacob Marley, howling, “Mankind was my business!”  Dickens' Christmas classic is more popular than ever. There's a new film about how he came to write “A Christmas Carol,” called “The Man Who Invented Christmas.” And a writer named Samantha Silva has just published a novel titled “Mr. Dickens and His Carol.” I do hope you'll take time out to read, or re-read, the original, or read it aloud to your family. Who knows what great good may come of it? And so I end this piece by saying—and you probably knew it was coming—“God bless us, everyone.”

In comedy, timing is everything and the timing is so off in 6th Street Playhouse’s Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge that the fact that it still manages to extract any laughs at all from its audience is somewhat of a Christmas miracle. Plagued with pre-production challenges ranging from a change in director due to the fires to the untimely passing of its lead actor, director Jared Sakren and his cast have done their best to present local audiences an option for alternative holiday fun. Christopher Durang’s musical parody of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol – with detours through the worlds of Oliver Twist, The Gift of the Magi, and It’s a Wonderful Life amongst others– has not aged well since its 2002 premiere. Full of political and pop cultural references that might have seemed dated even them (Remember Enron and Kenneth Lay? Harry and Leona Helmsley? TV’s Touched by an Angel?), it follows Ebenezer Scrooge (played by Kit Grimm) on his Christmas Eve journey through his past as guided by an incompetent ghost (Debra Harvey, alternating in the role with Serena Flores). Their visit to the Cratchit household reveals an angry and bitter Mrs. Bob Cratchit (played by an appropriately crotchety Tika Moon), who’s fed up with her milquetoast husband (an earnest Conor Woods), their twenty children - most of whom live in the root cellar - and her lot in life. Soon it’s off to the pub for her where she’ll knock back a few followed by a London Bridge plunge into the Thames. Scrooge and Cratchit’s fates become intertwined, as Scrooge finds himself oddly attracted to his underling’s miserable wife and Cratchit wishes she had never been born. The show concludes with a decidedly un-Christmas-like moral – you can be poor, loving, and noble, or rich, mean, and happy. God bless us, everyone! The play contains four original songs by Durang and Michael Friedman that offer a few chuckles, but you won’t be hearing carolers singing any of these any Christmas soon. Dicken’s original story is ripe for parody, and Durang does manage to mine a few silly laughs out of it, but this show never really gets off the ground. There are hints at what Ms. Harvey might have been able to do with the lead role of the ghost with sufficient rehearsal time, but the necessity of her reading from a script played havoc with the show’s pacing. Without a strong, central performance, it was left to the supporting cast to veer out on their own and bring the laughs. The most successful of those were Moon’s bitingly sarcastic Mrs. Cratchit, Laura Levin’s ebullient, cherubic Mrs. Fezziwig, and Eric Weiss’s rubber-limbed not-so-Tiny Tim. Credit to them and the entire ensemble for gamely marching on in the hopes of producing some Christmas cheer. While the punchbowl they’re serving it from is far from full, there’s at least enough in it for a couple of glasses. The Revival League Podcast proudly presents our original black comedy radio play, “Soylent Scrooge; Or, Christmas Is Made Of People.” England, 1893. The height of the Industrial Revolution. London is prosperous and well-fed. And yet, something sinister is afoot at the Soylent Scrooge Canning Manufactory, famous for feeding all of Great Britain its wildly popular brands of holiday slurry. So when Christmas Eve production grinds to a halt after captain of industry Jacob Marley falls into the whirling knives and gears of Soylent Scrooge, it's up to intrepid Food Inspector Bucket to get to the bottom of things. It's a black-hearted conspiracy that eats away at the very heart and soul of the British Empire ... and all strands of the crooked web lead back to Marley and his business partner, Ebenezer Scrooge! Can Scrooge survive the dogged sleuthing of Bucket, all while being haunted by the ghosts of Christmas? Cannibalism! Canning! Atrocious English Accents! What the Dickens will happen next, in the dastardly world of Soylent Scrooge? Listen and nibble act by act, or binge listen all at once! So please pop some popcorn, make some hot cocoa, curl up under a warm blanket and gather around the radio to listen to this fiendish holiday feast. “I wear the chains I forged in life!” This ghostly report from the doomed spirit of Jacob Marley is amongst the most famous supernatural utterances in English literature. It’s also a fair metaphor for the heavy weight of responsibility carried by any theater company brave enough to stage Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This unstoppably popular story has been around for better than 170 years, and along the way it’s forged a long, weighty chain of expectations, adorations, misinterpretations, criticisms, dismissals and the weird, unkind backlashes that spring from any legendary story’s overfamiliarity in the public eye. Amongst the many reasons that 6th Street’s current production of A Christmas Carol can claim to be called one of the best surprises of 2015, is that it both embraces what’s made the tale so enduring, while also blazing new trails, finding fresh, entertaining possibilities in what has, in some adaptor’s hands, become stale and predictable. With a strong, adaptable cast, an inventively clever script by Michael Wilson, sprightly, emotion-focused direction from Craig Miller, and a delightfully steam-punk production-design, this incarnation of the Dickens classic also makes maximum use of actor Charles Siebert as Ebeneezer Scrooge. Performing rarely on local stages, Siebert’s North Bay appearances are always occasions to celebrate (6th Street’s Red, Cinnabar’s The Price). As Scrooge—the miserly skinflint whose Christmas Eve haunting takes him backwards and forwards through his own history—Siebert is fancifully mesmerizing and terrifically, touchingly real, maintaining a remarkable level of creative generosity toward all others with whom he shares the stage. As Marley—materializing to deliver a dire warning to his former business partner Scrooge—Alan Kaplan is a wickedly, wackily menacing and also heartbreakingly earnest. As the various spirits of Christmas—past, present, and future—Miller has assembled a trio of comic actors (Jessica Headington, Nick Christenson, and Ryan Severt) who deliver delightfully spectral comedy while consistently landing sharp emotional punches when necessary—in one case, while towering over the stage on stilts. The large, multi-age cast—with notably strong and/or hilarious performances by Jeff Coté as Bob Cratchit, Harry Duke as Fezziwig, and Crystal Carpenter as Belle—work incredibly well as a shape-shifting, character-changing, scenery-moving ensemble. And particular praise must be given to Miller’s technical team, whose clock-work set (Jesse Dreikosen), mood-making lights (Steven Piechocki), and otherworldly sound-design (Miller, with John Gromada) are some of the best seen at 6th Street in many a Christmas. Meanwhile, over at Spreckels Arts Center, another beloved novel leaps to life on stage in ‘Little Women: The Musical.’ With a spectacular performance by Rebekah Pearson in the lead role of Jo March, with crisp, lively direction by Thomas Chapman, and a beautifully spare musical direction Jim Coleman, Louisa May Alcott’s enduring story of love, family and individual determination is gorgeously and cleverly transformed. The story has been rearranged a bit, with the bulk of the familiar tale of the March sisters a flashback in Jo’s grown-up memory, as she strives to make a go of it as a writer in New York City, far from the home she loves. IT works, taking elements of the book that happened earlier, and easing them later into the story, where they become the emotional peak of the play. The entire cast is excellent, the sing is stellar, and the remarkably accessible storytelling aims straight for the heart, without forgetting that ‘Little Women’ the novel, is also delightfully, humanly hilarious. Taken together these two season favorites are must-sees for this holiday season. A Christmas Carol’ runs Thursday–Sunday through December 20 at 6th Street Playhouse. 6thstreetplayhouse.com. Little Women: The Musical runs Friday - Sunday until December 20. Speckelsonline.com

A Christmas Carol has several characters that stand out:  Fan (Scrooge's sister) - full of love for her older brother Fred (Scrooge's nephew) - full of Christmas cheer Fezziwig (Scrooge's old boss) - knows how to celebrate Christmas Bob Cratchit (Scrooge's clerk) - loves his family deeply Tiny Tim (Bob's weakly son) - strives to live thoughtfully with goodness/kindness Note: They are all filled with hope, even as they face the difficulties of life: Fan will die young; Fred grew up without a mom; Fezziwig knew the challenges of running a business; Bob knew about poverty and making tough sacrifices; and Tiny Tim knew firsthand the hard realities of illness. It invites us to ponder - how do we prepare our hearts with Advent hope?  Are we receiving hope, and are we passing it on to one another?
