Helping lawmakers and regulators understand the trucking industry is vital on important topics ranging from electric trucks to independent contractor misclassification. In this episode of the Trucking for Millennials podcast, we kick things off by reflecting on Memorial Day. We express our gratitude to service members, both past and present, for their sacrifices. We then dive into some significant freight news, discussing a new bill that aims to fine double brokers $10,000. This legislation seeks to enhance transparency and accountability in the trucking industry by targeting fraudulent practices. We debate whether this bill will effectively deter double brokering or if it will just lead to new loopholes. Next, we shift gears to the topic of electric trucks, highlighting the recent Advanced Clean Transportation Expo. We discuss Tesla's push for the trucking industry to adopt fully purpose-built electric vehicles and the challenges faced by traditional OEMs in transitioning to electric powertrains. We also touch on Kenworth's new Super Truck 2 concept, which boasts impressive aerodynamic design and efficiency improvements. The conversation then broadens to the overall complexity of transitioning to greener technologies in the trucking industry. We explore the balance between maintaining diesel engines, which currently dominate the market, and investing in zero-emission technologies. The discussion includes insights from industry leaders on the need for improved infrastructure and collaboration to support this transition. To provide a deeper perspective, we revisit a debate we hosted last year between Niki Okuk of Cal Start and David Heller of the Truckload Carrier Association. They discuss the practical challenges and potential benefits of transitioning to electric trucks, particularly focusing on charging infrastructure and the feasibility of long-haul electric trucking. Overall, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the current state and future of electric trucks in the industry, highlighting both the progress being made and the hurdles that still need to be overcome. We invite our listeners to share their thoughts on these developments and stay tuned for more insightful discussions in future episodes.

Navigating the complexities of life as a new parent while juggling work and passions can feel like a Herculean task. This week, I'm David Heller, and together with Jody, we hash out the trials of fatherhood, the impact of sleepless nights, and the struggle to find time for ourselves. The conversation veers into the realm of sports, where we heatedly debate the effects of media glare on budding athletes. Imagine the pressure felt by young stars thrust into the spotlight and the scrutiny that follows. We also share a warm moment as we celebrate a new addition to Jody's family, and we're left scratching our heads at the historical oversight of Roger Bannister's monumental achievement.Sports journalism carries great responsibility, and in our latest discussion, we delve into the portrayal of young athletes in an era dominated by social media. Do interviews with teenage champions serve to inspire or simply amplify pressure? We explore Jason Henderson's perspectives, dissecting the intricate dance of exposure versus privacy. This episode isn't just about shedding light on the tension between showcasing prodigious talents and protecting their adolescence; it's a dialogue on the ethics of tagging them in posts and the importance of obtaining consent before sharing their stories and images. We wrap things up with some lighter fare, poking fun at the fashion gaffes of new runners and their over-equipped hydration strategies for short jaunts. But between the chuckles, we don't forget the serious issues: the stringent rules surrounding filming at events and the delicacy needed when dealing with the privacy of young athletes. Whether you're a seasoned sportsperson or someone who's just laced up their first pair of trainers, this conversation promises a blend of humor, insight, and reflection on the sport we so deeply adore. We're so excited to have had the opportunity to host this conversation between Niki Okuk and David Heller! David is the VP of Safety and Govt Affairs for the Truckload Carriers Association, and has been on the podcast in the past. Check out that episode here. He's also advocating to the White House what his members think about electric trucking and believes there are many obstacles and issues in the way that must be resolved. Niki is the Deputy Director of CALSTART, a nonprofit dedicated to accelerating to growth of clean transportation tech - and a veteran trucker herself. She's talking with truckers and fleet managers about why it's crucial for them to get ahead in this transition. So we decided it would be great to bring these two together so they can help us learn about the subject through a conversation between two opposing sides! What resulted was an excellent chat about charging infrastructure, the reliability of electric trucks, the affordability of electric trucks, what the point of all the changes are and much, much, more!

His brother took off in the car the two of them had leased, his college textbooks were in the car, he was sitting in his boyhood bedroom and David asked, "What am I doing here?". That was the impetus to join the Army for only two years, but his eight year career there turned into the learning experience of his life, spending much of the time in Berlin, Germany. The Army experience gave him the opportunity to get more education that led to finishing his degree as a civilian. While working with H-P, he started a side-hustle app that taught him some great startup lessons, the hard way. Then came a layout - his first - that spurred him to look at a problem, reimbursing job candidates, and a solution, writing Reimbi.
