Welcome to Unearthing Wellbeing Podcast, Where Our Greatest Wealth Is Health. For Episode 08 I had Emily Duggan on the podcast, V8 Supercar Racer. Emily made her racing debut in 2014 as the first female driver in Series X3 and her name has been prominent since then, winning at the second race meeting and successfully claiming 26 podium finishes in the category. Since then Emily's career has continued to flourish, competing in the Toyota 86 series, Supercars Super3 series and being mentored by Paul Morris who labelled her the hardest- working driver in pit lane due to working on her own car mechanically. We spoke about how the pandemic has actually been a blessing in disguise for Emily, as she was forced to recover from burnout and take the time to heal, relax, and live a slower paced life, as opposed to driving at 150+km per hour on the race track! You can grab the link to the suggested meditative practice Emily mentioned in my blog post about mediation. As well as you can find out how the “flame” ignited in her to pursue this career path, as well as the reason behind why she pumps Christina Aguleria in her car rides by listening to her podcast. Off the track Emily's success has been recognised with nominations of Sports Women of The Year and New Talent of The Year in 2019 through women in sports awards. Emily is a proud ambassador for women in sport and actively encourages school girls to dream big with her work with Dare to be Different, an event program aimed at primary school girls. Emily's dream has never been to be the first girl, just the first over the finish line. In the history of Australian racing there hasn't been a female driver to win a Supercar race. This is the next achievement Emily is working towards to change. Emily can be reached on her website. To find out what unfolded, tune into this week's episode. Topics covered: racing, women in sports, sports women, burnout, social media, self-care, dreams, aspirations + Follow Emily Duggan on Insta or Facebook + Announcements on Insta at _askelizabeth + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of Unearthing Wellbeing! I really appreciate your support during this new venture of mine. I also hope you took something from the episode in the quest of discovery. Sending love & light, Ask Elizabeth.
Talking to my guest for this episode was as thrilling as watching her race. Emily Dugan was just 22 years of age when she started racing in theSeries X3 NSW, after buying a race car on Gumtree, a suit on eBay and a helmet from Aldi. Self-taught and self-funded, she became the first female driver to race in the Super3 V8 Touring Cars Series in 2016. Since then, she has competed in events including the Toyota 86 Series and Supercars S3 Series. She’s also highly accomplished off the track, working with major brands like Penrite and Special K and being a finalist for Cosmopolitan’s Sportswoman of the Year in 2017. Emily is passionate about breaking down the barriers that prevent girls and women from achieving their dreams, and she is an ambassador for Girls on Track, originally launched by British F1 driver Susie Wolff. She has been described as the hardest-working racing car driver in Australia, and she’s done it all without family support. These days she clocks speeds of up to 270km an hour, but Emily’s first experiences behind the wheel were driving herself to school every day after her parents separated and left her living on her own. It’s an incredible story and I feel privileged that she shared it with me on the podcast. She has a maturity beyond her age and a unique approach to problem solving. Our conversation was a wild ride, with lots of hairpin bends and unexpected turns. I hope you’ll tune in to hear Emily talk about hitting the gym just after midnight, practicing times tables while running, and how her appendix might have cost her a championship. Growing up in the suburbs, trailblazer Emily Duggan never imagined that smashing lap times on a race track would become her destiny. But when a spark lit inside her, she made a promise to herself to follow her passion, no matter how many obstacles stood in her way.A rising star of the motorsport world, this 27-year-old powerhouse became the first female driver to race in the V8 Touring Car Series – now called the Super3 – in 2016, and also competes in the Toyota 86 Racing Series, clocking speeds of up to 230km an hour for a living. On a mission to shatter stereotypes in a sport that’s still heavily male-dominated, she’s recently become an ambassador for Dare to be Different, an initiative designed to inspire women in every aspect of racing. She’s a fierce advocate for equality and female empowerment, and believes passionately that every girl has the right to chase their dreams – regardless of their past, where they come from, or who tells them they can’t.In this inspiring and very honest episode, she shares the struggles and triumphs of following a path many believe is impossible, but having the bravery, self-belief and confidence to back yourself and do it anyway. She also talks openly about life, success, motivation, the incredible rise of Aussie women in sport… and the surprising reason she cranks up Christina Aguilera and Beyonce before every race.Show notes:Emily's InstagramDare to be DifferentFor more from Women's Health Australia, check out @womenshealthaus and womenshealth.com.au See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Emily Duggan’s story is a perfect example of why it’s important to share the stories of women in sport. When Emily was a little girl, she was watching TV one weekend and came across the Supercar motor racing series here in Australia and was instantly hooked. However Emily, in that moment, also realised there were no women racing and thought it was a “boy’s sport” and put it to the back of her mind (as the saying goes, “you can’t be what you can’t see”). Thankfully the voice that whispered to Emily that day never disappeared and as soon as she started working, she began saving for her first racing car - and hasn’t looked back since. In 2016, Emily became the 1st female driver to race in the V8 Touring Car Series here in Australia and now in 2019 is racing in the Super3 series (which is the 3rd tier in the Supercar series here). And sometime soon, I know we’ll see Emily line up on the start of the iconic Bathurst 1000 race (a race I’ve promised to watch, for the first time ever, when she does!). Emily shares her story with me on Sparta Chicks Radio this week.
